5:08 My heart soars whenever that outro guitar solo comes in...So melodic against that backdrop of synthesizers. It's the icing on the cake and exactly what the song needed.
"Lords of the Ring" from the 1978 "Pieces of Eight" album is James "JY" Young's finest vocal performance of his entire STYX career. The vocal melody is superb and he really brings this song to life - The perfect choice! Nod to Dennis DeYoung on having him sing it and I say that preferring Dennis's voice on most songs. It's one of the greatest progressive rock songs ever recorded. I feel like we are living in some parallel universe where "Lords of the Ring" didn't become a MASSIVE HIT.
I remember loving this song when the Pieces of Right Album came out over 40 years ago. Still a great song. I wish they would start playing this song in concerts. Another great song from the album that they don't do in concert much is SING FOR THE DAY. It is a beautiful song.
yes me 2 I grew up playin them on my little crappy system I had on cassette.now I have a bomb system with amp, preamp , cd player towera spkrs subwoofer, tape players and a turntable.dennis will always be the mac.all these bands with new si ger. reo, styx, kansas, uriah heep. etc.just retire already.lol
You need to get their Blu ray concert of them playing this and Sing for the day too! I have it pumping through an Onkyo Dolby digital 7.1 audio along with it presented on an eleven ft wide by 5.5 ft high DLP 1080p projection image. Truly breathing!
What a great song! I was listening to Pieces Of Eight a few hours ago, on vinyl. Great album all the way through. They saved this gem for last. It sounds even better here. Thanks for posting it.
Really good performance. Thanks for posting this. BUT, I have always thought that the subject matter of this song as having something to do with the Lord of the Ring books by Tolkien or medieval times or some ancient time in human prehistory, , NOT about a circus ring which is what some of the bands visuals depict. Circuses are creepy and depressing.
wow that's was pretty damn good .I never really heard the new guy who replaced Dennis..Dennis ruled then not sure about now.i. thinking he's still great .new guy is rockin though.jy still sounds great!
Seems that the song has connotations of Religious base of Super beings in Gothic Robes with Magical Rings only bestowed and worn by themselves with Awesome Superpowers(whatever those powers may be, ie: transcending and bridging time and space , eternal life mystery, destroying all disease with only a thought and channeling it thru glowing Rings which they possess, Folding space, Time travel etc...), overshadowed by the idea of Clowns and Ring leader in a Circus tent . I believe the meaning is deeper and super imposing those images of super beings exercising thus powers on the Jumbotron behind them would have confused the concert audience to the true meaning of the song as Awesome as the song is...
Amazing song from an amazing band! The chills it gave me back in high school! That audience is dead! They should be on their feet!
Takes me back to 78 i was 11 years old and this my ultimate favorite song from this album 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Man, I love this! This hit me so hard as a kid and really shaped who I became. So diggin' JY's lead vocal on this...
Same here!

Was that the one where they played all of the Grand Illusion, and all of Pieces of Eight?
James Young's vocals are incredible!

What a great song! Sounds good LOUD!

Not discounting anyone else but having Tommy Shaw in your band is a gamechanger.
Hey you are EXACTLY right!!!! I’ve always loved Tommy Shaw!!
Lawrence Gowan, too!
"And now the message is clear, and I became a Lord this year" If you say so...
wow that's was pretty damn good .I never really heard the new guy who replaced Dennis..Dennis ruled then not sure about now.i. thinking he's still great .new guy is rockin though.jy still sounds great!
Great. But as a pianist, that spinning keyboard setup would drive me crazy.
Was that #GraceSlick on the Album Cover for this song!?
C est bon styx Nouveau
Tho I greatly miss John I gotta say Todd is s great fit.
I've noticed Larry seems to prefer to play lead lines with his left hand, is he left handed?
Domino Lexington,
Who’s Larry?
Love how they switch the album art with them and take out Johnny, and Dennis very disappointing, Rip Johnny.

#StyxHOF now!
Dennis de Young 10'000 times better always
I'm sorry, but the chorus vocals are tracked. Makes me sick.
It's actually Tommy singing through a vocoder.
I hope these tears will help you over this dilemma. 😿😿😿😹
John's been dead for 20 years now? And Dennis has been dead for at least that long! I love the new lineup. Time to move on.
Time to push #Styx into #TheRocknRollHallofFame!
Mark - Are you referring to Dennis DeYoung? He's totally still living....
#DENNISDEYOUNG IS 76 years old!
