Finally a sewing conversation I can have with my partner 😂 We totally agree with your view on the economics of sewing. A handmade garments offers so much to the economy, environment, let alone mental health support. An 1hr of uninterrupted sewing and a cup of coffee saves lives 😂

I always check the deep sales at Walmart and Target for clothing items that are very large sizes because often times the fabrics are more interesting than what you can find at the fabric stores around here. This past summer I found a beautiful black and white checked seersuckerish gathered skirt in an XXL for $1 at Walmart. I picked it all apart and made a Monty shirt out of it. It’s very light and cool. One of my favorite tops is a leopard print knit drop sleeve shirt made from a 3X tshirt (Walmart again) that I also got for $1. I’m so grateful that I found your channel. I was frustrated with the fabrics I could find around here. You introduced me to Minerva and Stylemaker. I love their fabrics!

In addition to environmentally conscious fabric, I also love supporting artisans when I can - Indian hand blocked fabric, Japanese indigo dyed fabric and selvedge denim (buying direct from maker). It makes the fabric that much more special knowing someone has already put so much love and care I into it, so it's doubled in my own make.

You’ve done a very good job in explaining how sewing can be economical. When folks ask me, I usually say that it can be less expensive but more importantly, it’s my hobby and unlike other hobbies, I end up with something functional! I’m also an artist and that hobby leaves me with a lot of artwork and no more wall space!

I took some tailoring classes in college. The instructor always emphasized that the garment's cost did not compare to ready to wear but instead should be based on the cost of the fabric, the notions and the pattern. Total those 3 and triple that number for the real value of your finished garment.

I started renovating sewing machines over a year ago. My recommendation for your son is to start first with a Singer zig zag from the fifties or early sixties. My reasons are they are all metal and built like tanks, parts and manuals are easily available, there are tons of these machines out there and they are cheap, there is a wealth of information on RUclips for fixing these singers (and to a lesser extent Kenmore machines). AndyTube has very detailed videos for these machines. The old black and gold straight stitch singers are wonderful, but may be too simple and straight forward for him....except that the paint and decals need gentle care.
AndyTube's favorite machine is the 403a. I recently found one and am saving it for a winter project.
Taking apart a sewing machine is great fun and much cheaper than taking apart a car.

Great explanation on the economical aspect! A couple of years ago I finished college (at the age of 38-39) and my exam paper was on the pros of choosing organic yarns over conventional. It was very interesting to dive into the science part of things. I've been sewing and knitting for 20+ years and I've really enjoy this months theme on your vlog. Even if I have practical experience I still love learning new ways of looking at things. And about the estate sales ... two years ago we bought an entire estate, stuff and all, and among the millions of things I found fabric. These fabrics will be part of my new approach to sewing more responsibly.

I love the top you are wearing. The colour definitely suits you but also the fit of it gives you shape. It really does stand out for me. I also love the look you have created. Again, the fit makes such a difference and even though you have put on weight, you still are wearing a very flattering outfit. In Australia, we have a company called 'Upparell'. They take in textiles and up cycle them. I put all my unwanted fabric scraps into a box and for a minimal fee, they organise a company to collect the box (es) and take them away.

I would love to hear more about your vintage machine! I got a singer 99k about 2 years ago and I love it so much- I’m converted! The stitches on those machines are perfect and all the parts are replaceable if anything breaks.
Also I really hear you about people saying that sewing yourself should be cheaper. I think people tend to under value clothing- comparing everything to fast fashion. I think that’s more of a problem. But I also agree, definitely a lot of ways you bc an reduce your costs and environmental impact. Love the theme this month! ❤❤❤

I agree that you can make sewing more economical, I thrift a lot of yardage or remake a garment to suit me. I do want a boiled wool coat but I choked at the 50$ a yard fabric, so I chose a woven poly for my first try so not to waste expensive fabric. I’m not a person that would spend $150 on a coat as I thrift most of my clothes. Someday when I feel more accomplished with a big project I may. For now I thrift most of my notions and I’m big into reuse so sewing is fairly economical. But as you say it’s my creative outlet/hobby so I feel I’m worth some investment.

Luv the top.. and I am all for white pants in the colder months.. its usually too warm anyways in the summer for white jeans 🙄.. the discussion for economy/better fabrics and the reasons for sewing was really great.. there is definitely a variety of reasons that people sew.. fit and variety I think is quite high on the list.. and the ability to sew exactly what you want in the color you want is one of the greatest things.. my biggest reasons came during the pandemic when I realized I didn't want to depend on "industry" to provide me the clothing I needed and wanted and at the same time I could be for conscientious about the purchases I do make 😊

I worked in Very Nice Department stores when I was in College…I cannot tell you how many patterns I have made from ready-to-wear I never purchased! Do what Whitney suggested and look at your more upscale clothing, see how it is made. I’ll just bet if you look at the inside…you can do better. Now, a couture purist will tell you they never use a serger. They do a lot by hand. And many times you may also learn or observe a ‘trick of the trade.’ Great video Whitney😊

Sewing is only as expensive as you want it to be! Typically I buy patterns when they have the sales, thank goodness for them! I typically only buy fabric when it's on sale and when it is on sale I rarely go over $6/metre Canadian. My goal when I sew is, if I can't buy the notions/fabric for the cost of what I can buy it at Walmart, I don't do it! I will go to the second hand stores and see if I can thrift what I'm looking for instead. I can't afford to shop full retail for clothing or fabric/notions so when I see something similar to what I want at the thrift store for mere pennies compared to the original price (often plus size stuff still has tags on them!) I grab them! I picked up a beautiful classic Lane Bryant shirt waist dress in black with tiny white polka dots for $15 Canadian, that wouldn't even cover the duty and gas to drive to the US to buy it!
