Love your finds! I also love that your teaching the younger generations they can find name brand items on a budget. Such a fun, informative video. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Our hope is that this will serve our daughters well as they go out on their own!
I love Annalise!!
So do I!
Hi Whitney! This was so much fun to watch - thank you for sharing your finds and for the good cheer 😊 Great tips, too!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
For Christmas I made a couple of circular purses for my daughter and daughter in law. I decided to go to my thrift store to buy purses and I used the hardware from them for the bags I made. It really made them look so much nicer . It's really important for our environment to start thinking about ways we can reuse items as much as we can, and I'm glad you mentioned some of that in the video.
That is SO smart! Now I want to make purses with found hardware!
That orange purse looks amazing against the teal sweater!
Didn't it?!
Great finds! I would love to see any videos on refashioning thrift pieces. How do you go about deciding what to make? A video of you at your cutting table (new studio, of course) thinking out loud as you mull over the possibilities would be so helpful. I have thrifted a ginormous pair of men's navy Dockers to cut up for yardage to make myself pants. I'm not sure if I will be able to use the welt pockets. Hope I can figure it out.
I can definitely do some refashioning on the channel. It's always a fun puzzle!
My daughter and I love to thrift shop, too! Because I can alter clothes, it opens up the possibilities. Love this video!
Exactly! My daughter is constantly brining items up to me while thrifting asking if I can do this or that to it!
That sounds like such a fun day! Great finds! I didn’t find anything at the Goodwills after your class but that consignment shop was probably the best I had ever been to! So fun to see you guys passing on your thriftiness to the next generation! ❤
I love to hear that! Our consignment shops are pretty great as well!
I have been thrifting since I was a newlywed(45 years ago). The ladies I taught with called me the GW Queen. My favorite maternity dress came from GW as did much of my children’s clothing. Just before Christmas I found two new pair of slacks, one from Ann Taylor, the other from Macys. I’m hooked for life. BTW, scrubs are excellent for painting. That way if you need to run to the store for more supplies, you look really presentable. Way to go ladies!
I love it! We have also found some really great treasures when thrifting!
Enjoyed this video! Also I have a Bernina 790 embroidery machine. I love this machine. It does amazing embroidery. The stitches are just beautiful. You will enjoy learning this new Bernina machine. I do mostly embroidery on my 790. I have a Bernina 480 that I sew on.
I am REALLY excited to start playing on it!
My tip is, if you see amazing buttons on a vintage garment that you would never wear, get it, remove the buttons. You could always redonate if you replace the buttons.
That's a great tip!
Favourite tip: Wear a tank and leggings. I love that! Thank you for the fun video.
It really works 😂.
Our local church has a fabric sale once a year that is all donated fabrics and the money goes to charity. It is so popular as the amount of fabric donated is generous. ❤
Well, that sounds like fun!
Yep!!
GEAUX TIGERS!!
Love it!!!! So fun!!
😂😂😂
Whitney! This is great. Thanks so much for sharing your tips and finds. May I add my own suggestion? I always thrift for party goods and decorations! There are fabulous silk flowers, vases, and table top decor to be had at my local thrift stores! For a fall table-scape, I found vases in fall colors and silk foliage. Additionally, I found the cutest little side dishes in brown glass. I spent less than $30. After receiving many compliments at my dinner party, I packed it all up and donated it back! Now someone else can use it and I don't have to store it. Win/Win!
That is so smart!!!
I recognized that green lamp as very similar to one my grandmother had. ;) Hers was brown and gold.
It's an amazing lamp!
Fun video! Geaux Tigers! 🐯
😂
What a fun video!
We're so glad you enjoyed it!
You are going to love that 770. I have the 790+ and love it. Embroidery is so much fun
I'm very excited to start playing!
OMG! I have grab-it bowls that I didn't know where grab-it bowls but mine don't have lids. Now I have something to search for!
Yes!!
I'm a big Alabama fan. My son was an ROTC instructor before he retired from military, and his younger son graduated from there. Love the argyle cashmere sweater.
Jenni's family are also Bama fans!
Wonderful tips -- many I had not thought of us. I am a big donator to Goodwill. I also of course go inside. Not garment related but home dec --- One other thing I look for is down/feather pillows; I believe one can never have too many pillows! Assuming they do not smell, I make new covers for them.
Thats such a good idea about the pillows!
I’m jealous of your obvious friendship. What a fantastic day you all had. Thank you so much for doing this.
We're so glad you enjoyed it! We have a really lovely time together!
I always check the scarves. I seem to have an addiction to vintage Vera Neumann silk scarves. I'm always looking for more. Delightful video.
Yes to the scarves! We check those as well!
Very cool tips. You've all inspired me to go to the thrifting stores, but first clean at home and clear out. Thanks for this video.
We are so glad that you enjoyed it!
Great tips for thrifting! Now off to Goodwill! I did find a table at Goodwill years ago for my hubby to cut out a place for one of my machines!
Furniture is another thing to look for!
Thank you Whitney, what a fun video. Your Wanderlust dress looks so good. Is that made with a Viscose Jersey ?
Thank you! I made this one in a Ponte knit from Minerva. It's a favorite!
Thank you ladies... great fun video... fantastic tips... you found some great stuff...
We're so glad you enjoyed it!
Love the little Whitney on the shelf!
😂 that's so funny that you spotted it! Little Whitney has now becoming an ongoing joke amongst the TomKat team 😂.
What a fun day!!!
It was a really fun day!
Lovely video today. Jenni and her daughter are naturals! I have a request re the Parker Ponte pants sew along. Cashmerette have just released their Ashwood pants and I got an email today with a blog post on how to make them straight, which would be how I would wear them. Could you please include a comparison between these two patterns when you do your sew along as I am now torn which to make? Thanks
I haven't yet made the Cashmerette pattern, but I can definitely talk about the differences. Stay tuned!
This was a delight! I enjoyed the tips provided, and I think my colors are similar to Jenny's. You all ended up with some amazing finds!
We did have a very successful trip!
I would love to see suggestions for choosing embroidery designs for garments - which ones are appropriate and flattering, plus flattering placement of embroidery motifs.
Sure! I have a feeling there will quite a bit of embroidery content coming up on the channel!
As far as keeping clothing items from the landfill, repurpose fabric from your own closet and bureau drawers before donating. Sunday, I cut up a pair of black twill trousers, which no longer fit, to make a bucket hat. All it cost was thread, time and electricity. No gas, no Goodwill cost.
Thats a great idea as well!
That was such a fun video! Thanks for sharing all tips and treasures.
Our pleasure! We're glad you enjoyed it!
I love 2x3’ original paintings. I have gotten 3.
Ooh!
Looks like you all had a fantastic time & got so many great finds. I’m hoping to get out & do some thrift shopping soon.
It was a really lovely day!
I was waiting for someone to talk about your “statue” on the bookshelf!
😂 it has turned into an inside joke with the TomKat team. Jenni's kids made her up when they were redoing the website for me. She now travels around and shows up here and there 😂.
@@TomKatStitchery so funny!
I would love to see something beautiful embroidered on the back of a denim jacket or vest. Love your videos!
So would my daughter 😂. We're going to try to figure out how to digitize her art work and then embroider it onto a garment. We'll see how that goes!
A thrift day is a fun filled day. I checkout purse as one of my areas. I found a designer purse that just fits my style and color. But the real find is that I found $272 plus change in that purse. I have received so many compliments on the purse. I also found both of my mother of the grooms dresses at a thrift store.
What?!!! That's amazing that you found cash inside!
Very fun video!
We're so glad you enjoyed it!
Great video!!
Thank you! We love thrifting!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great tips!
We're glad you enjoyed it!
This vlog was a special treat to enjoy first thing this AM. Thanks for the information and sharing your warm friendship! 🤗
We're so glad you enjoyed it!
I think the best thing about thrifting is for those who are changing careers or new graduates who don't have the funds to have a professional wardrobe. My daughter was in university and got a job at a high end jewelry store and needed a high end wardrobe. She lives in a very large city so I knew the thrift stores would be amazing! It was also the starting of a new school year so they had huge sales on at the stores. We managed to get her a full wardrobe of clothes for work and school for HALF price!! Chanel style jackets, skirts, silk dresses etc... only to find out she needed an all black wardrobe! lol She ended up fitting everything in her wardrobe for school and shared pieces with her room mate. Not sewing related but my husband had both his knees replaced three years ago and he was just catching the thrifting bug. Normally he does a circuit around the store then waits in the truck but this day he went with me and found a physio table to do his exercises for before and after his surgeries in immaculate condition for $13 CAN dollars!!! I look for egg poachers, we use ours constantly and the cups often peel and you just can't find them new. I have replaced ours completely once and have a full poacher as a spare! Do I need two, no but I have one when I need it! A year ago I was thrifting when they had just reopened the stores after COVID and found a dark lime green leather tote/purse, it had the foam wrap still on the buckles and the original tags-NEVER used for $8 if I remember correctly. I got home and had to look it up; it retailed for $164.99!! I love it!! If you have a set of dishes and you brake one of the set it's a good idea to take a photo of the design and keep it on your phone in the event you find that piece at the store you can look to make sure it is the right one. My daughter inherited her Great Great Grandma's Limoges wedding china and it didn't have all the pieces to make a full set. I took a photo of the pattern up close and the stamp on the back so when I see them in store I can make sure I'm getting the right one since it looks very similar to Bridal Rose. Twice now at auction I've bought part sets to create a full set for her. Before we moved, we were on the look out for a dining set, ours was second hand and after two kids we needed to replace it. I found a set for $34, a table with three leaves and 6 chairs and two arm chairs. The table top was scratched really bad and the seats needed recovering. It took me two months to strip, stain and recover but now we have an amazing set! I think the best thing about thrifting is not bringing more 'stuff' into the world when there is perfectly good things that can be repurposed at the second hand stores!
I agree with all of this wholeheartedly!
These thrifting tips are so helpful. Thank you for this video! Yay Whitney the Bernina 770 QE is the same machine I have including embroidery unit! I love it!
I am SO excited to start playing with it!
Whitney, I have the Bernina 770, w/o the embroidery add on. Absolutely loce the automatic buttonholer.
I am so excited to try out the buttonholer!
@@TomKatStitchery best advise follow every single instruction in the book carefully and make a practice one. This machine sometimes has a mind of its own
Is that a mini me on the shelf behind Jenny, Whitney 😂. Great video 😊.
😂 it is! Little Whitney has become somewhat of a joke amongst the TomKat group 😂.
@@TomKatStitchery well I think it’s brilliant 🥰
Denim jackets are great to add embroidery to. I used the Rustic Rose from Embroidery Library on the back of mine. It took a couple of hours, it was one color, but so worth it.
I am really looking forward to playing with the embroidery function on this new machine!
A knitter who used to come to our local yarn shop was at Goodwill and found a hand knit sweater from Norway for $.50. She brought it to the shop to ask the owner if she would know anyone who could wear it. Look who ended up with it--me. I was the only one small enough to wear it. I almost cried when I saw the sweater because many years ago, when my dad traveled a lot for work, he brought one home for my sister and one for me. Many memories came rushing back. Many people do not know what they have when they give those sweaters to thrift stores.
You're so right! It makes me sad to see handmade items at the thrift store. Jenni found a hand knit sweater this past time, but it was too small and itchy so it stayed there.
Sounds like I need to try our GW again. Last time I shopped there it was very disappointing. I have bought a pair of Tommy Hilfiger jeans there once when I was in the mist of loosing weight so it’s really great for those in between sizes you go through on weight loss journeys. Wonderful video. Thanks.
When I was in the middle of weight loss I found a ton of great stuff. I would get things, wear them, then donate back.
GW is fabulous for a weight loss journey!
Great post with all of you!
We're so glad you enjoyed it!
Whitney, Jenni and anyone else who wants... we need to go on a field trip to Minneapolis/St. Paul to hit SR Harris and find Dale of Norway sweaters!
I would LOVE to visit SR Harris again!
When I visited New Orleans a few years ago (I live in Scotland btw 🏴) I was taken to a GW store. It was huge and we had such fun. Just didn’t have enough space in my suitcase 😂😂😂. We have “charity” shops in the UK (cancer research, Chest & Heart etc) and they are mostly in unused shops on our High Streets (my town has 4). If I want slightly better quality goods I can go to St Andrews (the home of golf) or Stockbridge in Edinburgh (one of these does specifically wedding stuff. - bride, mother of the bride/groom and brides maids and hats !!). I’ve had some great finds Lovely to see how enthusiastic you guys are 🤓🏴
The thrift shops are so much fun! We are really wanting to do a Scotland trip sometime soon and St. Andrews is on the list (my husband and father are HUGE golfers). I'll have to do some thrifting while they're visiting the course!
I always take a measuring tape with me so I can check my measurements against the clothing so I know whether to even attempt to try it on.
That's a great idea!
That’s a great idea!
I look for curtains, shower curtains, table cloths and duvets. I find 100% cotton twill curtains and those have become unlined jackets. I find chambray and denim used to make these items and these are large yardages. I have found 100% linen table cloths (I check to see if I can work around any stains). Happy hunting!
That is a great tip!
Beautiful finds. Congrats on the sponsorship. I'd like u to do accent embroidery on clothes. Ty. Stay wrll
I have a feeling I'll be doing quite a bit of embroidery this year!
Food for thought! Another hobby? Maybe. Loved the Mini Whitney on the shelf!😂
It is totally another hobby! I also love that you found the Little Whitney 😂.
Is that a mini Whitney on the bookshelf? 😆
Excited to see your new Bernina unboxing. I have an old one I inherited, but looking forward to learning about the newer model and the embroidery!
Oh good! I'm also looking forward to playing around with it!
My brother and sister-in-law also live in the Westfield/Carmel area and my SIL says the same thing about the Goodwills in the area. (Tip #3). She is a huge goodwill shopper and finds some great stuff
They really are fabulous Goodwills!
I only discovered Tomkat Stitchery a few weeks ago ‘cause I bought a TomKat Stitchery handmade piece from the Goodwill Auction, which I LOVE!
This is hilarious! Welcome to the channel! I'm so glad that you love your piece! Out of curiosity, what is it?
It is a heavy plaid jacket with leather (or faux leather) sleeves, a large collar and an asymmetrical zipper. I can send a photo.
@@mhmccorm oh yes!!! That’s a fabulous coat and those are real leather sleeves. I’m so glad it found a good home!
My daughter recently asked me if I wanted to go to her storage unit. She was talking about thrift store shopping. Hmmm, no rental fees. I like this new way of thinking. I am looking forward to seeing what you do with the Love Notions Presto Tunic pattern and embroidery.
Thrifting is such a fun treasure hunt. We highly recommend it!
The finds were fabulous!! I especially loved the "moto" jacket, the last dress you showed, and Jenni's daughter's overalls-- such great picks! :+)
I really wanted to express how articulate Jenni's daughter is-some adults cannot even speak properly, let alone teens!! Really nice to have her on with you two!
Nice tips!!
Everyone looked especially pretty! :+)
OOOHHH-embroidery. I must get back to it. I have been concentrating more on sewing than embroidery the last 3 or so years, before that I was embroidering anything I could lay my hands on, I think!! ROTFL!
I am going to look up that machine now! The machine I have is turned 23 last September, but she still runs wonderfully!
Thanks to you all, and have a great week!!
We're so glad you enjoyed this one! Annalise is a real treat. She's a great friend to my daughter and has proven to be a wonderful TomKat Stitchery intern as well!
Annalise is a beautiful name and she is a great addition to the “team”! 😊
This was so good- looks such fun. Did Jenny.s daughter do the reel with the 12 months of the year?? it is amazing- am not an instagram person but I have gone back + watched that several times🤣
We're so glad you enjoyed it! I actually did the 12 months of the year one so thank you for the compliment! It's been a steep learning curve for me for some reason 😂.
I love these videos, thanks! I am not so much a thrifter, but I have a wonderful friend who purchases all her clothes (maybe everything else!) from thrift shops - though never Goodwill. She doesn’t sew… 🙃
It is such a fun shopping experience and a great way to keep things out of landfills!
So fun, I wish I had great thrift stores near me. I do find good patterns for $.25 each when they have them.
Sewing patterns and actual fabric yardage are some of the most exciting things to find!
Roll Tide. The mother of my alma mater UA-Huntsville. HINT: shrunken sweater make great house shoes.
Ooh! I hadn't thought of slippers! That's a great idea!
How wonderful to see young women into sewing and thrifting - surely both Whitney and Jenni are terrific role models. Nice to meet you Annalise (and so good for you to be so comfortable with public speaking - such an important life skill). P.S. How in the world did Indiana-Whitney get to pronouncing 'Jenni' like 'Ginny'? :)
You have peaked my interest. How else would you pronounce Jenni?
@@TomKatStitchery Hmmm...I would say it like Genny, where the gen is like 'generous'. My in laws from Tennessee used to pronounce 'pen' like 'pin'. But what do I know? Maybe Jenni likes Ginny! :)
@@charlotteanderson3727 😂 I love it. One of my best friends is from Rhode Island and she laughs at my “accent” on occasion. I didn’t think midwesterners had an accent, but I guess we do 😂.
You can put a dollar amount on your thrifted items at Goodwill by filling out paperwork at Goodwill. The receiving area personnel sign your inventory sheet and you in turn use that itemized form with your tax return to claim a charitable contribution along with all of your other charitable contributions for a tax break (at a certain $ level).
Suggestions for the embroidery machine: Adorn children's clothes (RTW or sewn), logos on polo shirts, monogramming, decorate the pocket of a shirt and create "decorative fabric" that can be sewn to a RTW or sewn garment.
Those are fabulous ideas! Since I'm planning on making my son some golf shirts this year, I'm totally going to embroider a little something on the chest!
Embroidery idea- Itch to Stitch Seychelles with tonal embroidery on an exposed facing.
Ooh!!! I LOVE that idea!
You found some nice things. When I go to Goodwill, I have to look at the clothes. I usually buy cds and dvds at Goodwill. About a year and a half ago I saw a Simplicity Creative Sewing machine for 19.99. I bought it. You never know what you will find. I am planning a trip. I am going to need more long dresses. I am going to look for them at Goodwill. This will save me time and money.
It will definitely save you some time and money. We are big fans of thrifting over here!
We shop at Savers, find great buys but they took their fitting rooms out also.
Maybe that's just the thing to do in thrift shops now?
Love the video but War Eagle!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Whitney, your red dress is stunning on you. Would you let me know the pattern you used?
Thank you! That is the Pattern Emporium Wanderlust Dress. It's a fabulous pattern!
Whitney, the last orange print dress you showed that you got for $6.00...how much would you have paid at, for example, Joanne's for the same yardage of that sort?
I would say, at least $10-$12 a yard, even with a coupon. I would guess 3 yards to have made the dress from yardage so $30-$36 on the low end!
That was a fun video! But ladies.... was that a miniature Whitney standing next to the glass decanter on the bookshelf? Was it? A miniature Whitney???? Did you talk about that and I missed it? Cos... we gott talk about that 😄😁😆
😂😂😂 Yes, that was Little Whitney. Little Whitney started off a joke when we were redoing the website earlier last year. Little Whitney has now become a staple amongst the TomKat clan 😂.
@@TomKatStitchery Funny!
Roll Tide ❤️❤️❤️🐘🐘
❤️❤️❤️
Not Darryl, Lisa 🙂. Annalise is so sweet! She should have a channel of her own showing her sewing journey. That would be a great resource for the younger generation.
She is the sweetest! She would be fabulous with her own channel!
I wonder how you go about donating garments you’ve made that don’t have sizes inside? Maybe it doesn’t matter very much since others may be like you and ignore the size tags anyway. I always hope my handmade garments make it onto a rack.
Our state funds "free shops". Its incorporated into the food pantry. The community drops unwanted items and takes things they want. Free, free free. You can donate a few dollars or not. No labels needed. I find homemade clothing all the time.
@@christinewhitehair6889 That's really interesting.
I don't put size tags into my handmade pieces, but I have found that a large majority of the donated items have their tags cut out anyway. It is funny to see some of my things on the rack when I have made a donation!
Tell Jenni she can dye the purse she bought. I’ve seen several people on RUclips dying existing leather accessories.
That would be a fun experiment!
Consignment is difficult for me being a chubby petite 🥴
Keep at it. I have a friend who is very small and has a hard time finding things at thrift for her figure, but we went one day and someone her size had just donated a ton of really nice pieces. She cleaned it out!
Roll Tide. All. Day. Long!!!
😂😂😂
I think Macys is going out of business
It is?!!
💚
