I'm not surprised to see you like this pistol. I'm enjoying mine and have been shooting it a great deal the last week or two. There's something about the ergonomics of this thing that make me just want to pick it up and shoot it some more. There are a lot of nice polymer pistols out there these days, but this one feels great in the hand and has a feel of solid quality. Of course, it's FN, not exactly a fly-by-night gun maker. :-) By the way, good to see and chat with you at the NRA meeting.

I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it shot. As I mention in the video, while I love the P10C, the 509 has more pleasant recoil impulse. It was fun catching up with you and John at NRA.
I really love this pistol...so accurate. I was a little disappointed that it didn't do that well in the gauntlet but I will still carry it when I'm not in a swamp.
I happened into a LNIB 509 at my local watering hole for $425. I have been EXTREMELY impressed with it. I use the straight backstrap. I also used the MCARBO spring kit. It has a crisp 4.75 lbs trigger pull. I also fit a set of orange Tritium Ameriglo Sig #8 Hackathorn sights. With Underwood's 124gr GDHP +P+, it makes one tiny ragged hole at 30-feet. It is quickly becoming my favorite. Thanks for the video.

This FN 509 has been my carry weapons since I got it. I like shooting it better than the CZ P10c which I also have. I agree the recoil is very soft and the grip texturing it about perfect nowhere as near aggressive as the CZ P10c. Mine had a smooth trigger out of the box. I paid well under $600 for mine at my LGS. 17-rd magazine is about the perfect load for a magazine and that's a plus to me. Thanks for the video. I sure will be interested in the gauntlet trial.
Will - I thought I had answer this, but I guess not. I happened to have a Bravo Concealment holster made for my S&W M&P Pro C.O.R.E. 4.25" bbl which to my surprise fit the FN 509 perfectly. It snaps into the holster and covers the trigger perfectly. It's not hard to draw out either. I don't think I could have gotten another kydex holster that fit this pistol so well.
I had a very bad experience with American steel ammo. I had a complete lockup with my glock 22. It was just slightly out of battery and the slide would just not come back( dead trigger as well) . I had to use a mallet to get it loose. The American steel also produces more sparks out the muzzle when firing than any other ammo I have run. I just finished up the last of the 500 rounds I bought and i am glad it is gone.
I had the opportunity to shoot this pistol about 2 weeks ago. The FN rep was in our local gun shop and We got to talking. Long story short I put about 50 rounds through it. My thoughts were good ergos, goes on target naturally, good sights, uncomfortable slide release, decent trigger but sloppy take up on the reset. Equals Nothing to right home about.
FN makes good firearms and honestly I love my 509. I did however have two issues with the firearm, one of them was a major issue but was easy enough to resolve. First issue is that I am definitely not used to a European/combat Zero. I did end up changing out the factory sights to remedy that issue. When using the same site picture and point of aim that I would use with a Glock I was hitting about three inches low at 50 ft. The major issue was the fact that the striker broke after somewhere between 600 and 700 rounds. I replaced the striker with a heavy duty machined stainless steel aftermarket striker and I haven't had any other issues after that. It has been through multiple classes now and even though I had those issues it is still a handgun that I trust, and it is extremely accurate.
You got a sub man, great videos. Love the amount of detail included and, more importantly, the lack of battle uniform clothing and excessive use of self-made acronyms like some other RUclipsrs.

It's not based on the FNS, it's based on the FNS Compact and it's not their MHS submission either. It's the result of research with target customers (military and LE) from the MHS that led to several improvements to CREATE the FN 509. I got all this just from reading a few online articles. If it's this easy to get it right maybe I need to start an Arms channel.
I was split too. Went with the SIG because of the military trials. Not to have the same gun, just because I expect the aftermarket to get HUGE now. I may still get an APX also, maybe one of these 509s as well. So many sick striker fired guns now!

Ambi is not just for left-handed shooters; some of us still believe in swapping hands depending on the cover we’re using at the time. Also with our hands wrapping around the gun they frequently get injured by return fire - they are right in the “X” zone... I am a lefty, however.......... Pete.
Sam, are you carrying a P10C right now? or the P07? or somethin else. I tried out a P10C in a LGS last week and was underwhelmed. Maybe it's just because it needs range time to loosen up, but the controls were so tight they were nearly unusable, and the trigger was at best TP9 good. Have you seen enough to know if that's common, or rare for them to be like that?
I rented an FNS at my local range to give it a try a couple years ago and after only about 50 rounds or so, my hand was actually hurting quite badly because of the grip texturing.

This might explain why I got the FNS with NS and 3 mags for $399 around Thanksgiving. I really like that gun..the grips are a tad on the aggressive side though.
I thought that the initial take up and break on the trigger pull was noticeably better on every FNS-9 that I've tried versus the one 509. This was right out of the box and without any break in time. However, the trigger reset on the 509 was slightly shorter and far more crisp.
Got mine last week. for $569.. But only 2 mags? ugh polished it in a few spots and wow Love the trigger now! .. fits me just fine, but front and back grips just a bit more aggressive than I like, that's just me.. Internals like well made. I'm happy so far. Wanted the new CZ and or Beretta but not around here yet. I settled for this and glad I did.

I will try this gun out sometime. I have a feeling it will fit my hand well. I am a bit concerned about the ejection. It seems slightly lethargic, however if it keeps working without problems, then I guess it does not really matter....we will see with some more testing.
Tim, one term that bothers me is "break-in period". Please let me explain. I buy a pistol/revolver I inspect it in the shop (looking for loose parts (sights) lol, can happen, burrs, etc. Go home clean it, lube it, SHOOT IT, in that order. When, I buy a new vehicle I drive it. I don't expect issues from my vehicle, nor my gun. So why can I not expext it from a firearm???? Always, tremdous video!

I got my 509 brand new off gunbroker and after transfer fee, shipping, etc. paid $570 out the door. So given time, I think they will be very affordable. Go try and find a P10C, there are 3 on gunbroker for $600 plus and thats not including any fees and people still bidding. That is the whole point people keep talking about the P10C and its MSRP, there is no way in hell anyone is getting one at MSRP probably for 6 months at least in my estimate. They did a good job hyping the shit out of it and then not producing. When were they supposed to be available? The most recent estimate that has changed multiple times was the end of april I believe.

I sold my FNS9 to buy the 509 and I did. I like the looks and sights of the 509 better. That being said I wish I'd kept my FNS9. The FN 509 left side mag release doesn't function well at all. It sticks sometimes....a lot actually. It's hard to actuate. Another person that got one locally has the same issue with his. My FNS9 didn't have this problem. Makes no sense how they can screw that up when it worked on the FNS. Position of it isn't great either...nor is the fencing around it. Had it not been for this they would have had a winner in my opinion. Sold my 509 after 3 days and will be looking for another FNS9.
Christen Smith Another RUclipsr had the same problem and noted it in his review the other day. The right side release works great which is good for y'all that are left handed. I noticed in the video everyone but Tim was using the right side release.
Neal Johnson Oh yeah I saw his review.. I don't think it was to the extent your issue was. Sticking is definitely a problem. FN should have fixed that for you for free.
David L The mistake is commenting without all of the facts. You jumped too quickly my friend. I won it off of a gunbroker auction. It was transferred through my Dealer. I also thought it would break in but after a lot of mag changes it never did. Besides, with all of the hype FN has out out there I figured they had it right. I've owned over 250 firearms in my lifetime. No rookie here.

Does the weak ejection raise any concerns. It looks like it's already gone through the elemental test.

Chris McDonald my fnx has weak ejection but it has been reliable. I have allot of rounds through FNH and they have always been a good company
It's a non issue for me so far. I only have 600ish rounds down the barrel but its never jammed on me.
My fns 9 had kinda weak ejection for the the first 300-400 rounds, but since then it's been good, almost like a break in period.

Good to know about the trigger soothing out, because it felt pretty bad to me. Also, I've been seeing these for $540-560 in PA and Ohio. Not bad imo.

The "pan" effect you're doing with the camera is a great touch. I don't know if it's some sort of rig or a person with a gimbal.

Very nice firearm. I just bought the TP9SFX so this will have to wait. There offering 3 free mags with purchase till August 31. Total 5 mags is a sweet deal.
I will try this gun out sometime. I have a feeling it will fit my hand well.
I am a bit concerned about the ejection. It seems slightly lethargic, however if it keeps working without problems, then I guess it does not really matter....we will see with some more testing.

Tim, one term that bothers me is "break-in period". Please let me explain. I buy a pistol/revolver I inspect it in the shop (looking for loose parts (sights) lol, can happen, burrs, etc. Go home clean it, lube it, SHOOT IT, in that order. When, I buy a new vehicle I drive it. I don't expect issues from my vehicle, nor my gun.
So why can I not expext it from a firearm????

Good vid, went well with breakfast. I've never been disappointed with any FN firearm. I'd like to see "recoil impulse" judged when shooting some real world +P duty ammo as opposed to just range ammo. Looking forward to the Gauntlet. Keep'em coming.

I got my 509 brand new off gunbroker and after transfer fee, shipping, etc. paid $570 out the door. So given time, I think they will be very affordable. Go try and find a P10C, there are 3 on gunbroker for $600 plus and thats not including any fees and people still bidding. That is the whole point people keep talking about the P10C and its MSRP, there is no way in hell anyone is getting one at MSRP probably for 6 months at least in my estimate. They did a good job hyping the shit out of it and then not producing. When were they supposed to be available? The most recent estimate that has changed multiple times was the end of april I believe.
I like your reviews and I didn't realize this firearm was available when I just purchased a FNS-.40 about 2 weeks ago, haven't fired it yet but will very soon ...

I sold my FNS9 to buy the 509 and I did. I like the looks and sights of the 509 better. That being said I wish I'd kept my FNS9. The FN 509 left side mag release doesn't function well at all. It sticks sometimes....a lot actually. It's hard to actuate. Another person that got one locally has the same issue with his. My FNS9 didn't have this problem. Makes no sense how they can screw that up when it worked on the FNS. Position of it isn't great either...nor is the fencing around it. Had it not been for this they would have had a winner in my opinion. Sold my 509 after 3 days and will be looking for another FNS9.

Christen Smith Another RUclipsr had the same problem and noted it in his review the other day. The right side release works great which is good for y'all that are left handed. I noticed in the video everyone but Tim was using the right side release.

Neal Johnson Oh yeah I saw his review.. I don't think it was to the extent your issue was. Sticking is definitely a problem. FN should have fixed that for you for free.
David L The mistake is commenting without all of the facts. You jumped too quickly my friend. I won it off of a gunbroker auction. It was transferred through my Dealer. I also thought it would break in but after a lot of mag changes it never did. Besides, with all of the hype FN has out out there I figured they had it right. I've owned over 250 firearms in my lifetime. No rookie here.

Looks like it is ejecting spent casings some what sluggishly. Will be interesting to see how it handles getting dirty for the gauntlet.
