  • The story mode is crushed beneath the captain's boots, let's ratchet up the difficulty and play on the Endless extreme of Frostpunk 2, known as Utopia Builder: Captain Difficulty. We'll be doing our best to create a self reliant city or set of colonies while the game does its best to humble me with the maximum difficulties of cold, politics, tension and resource deficits.

    An easy way to increase the difficulty while also making the game more sensible would be by modifying the adjacency bonuses for cold/heat to be a percentage modifier, I would also consider disabling trade and outposts during the storm, maybe adding random events too. There's certainly a lot that can be done with modding, I don't think I'll ever play this game vanilla once I buy it.

    • @TrollBishbaalkin
      @TrollBishbaalkin 19 дней назад +5

      Yeah, the vanilla does have its merit but its depth seems to be severely limited by game mechanics being game-y. We will see how far the mod kit go over the weeks, if it is as expansive as atleast CD redkit or straight up a community menu like plague inc, i could see the game having significant lifetime.

    Great playthrough. It does feel like it's a bit too easy for the hardest mode; the fact you didn't have to engage in any of the radical laws is proof of that. I also agree the colony system needs some changes, imagine if you had to play for longer with 4 colonies set up it's be a micromanaging nightmare.
    I do like the direction they've taken the game though, ballsy move not to make Frostpunk 1.5. I reckon the dlcs will be great

    Finally finished all three endless mode vods and honestly I wouldn’t mind watching you keep playing and maxing out your colonies despite the guaranteed win. Really just wring out every little bit this playthrough has to offer

    No frostlands resources except cores.
    Only basic buildings no faction specific ones (drum hothouse ok, but chemical or bio waste not)
    Laws cannot be proposed by the steward only by granting agenda/research.

    There's so few twists in difficulty that I can't help but feel you've seen all there is to see after a single Captain playthrough. I appreciate the guts it takes to make a sequel of this style, but I would have personally preferred a "bigger" and more complicated version of the first Frostpunk like a typical sequel might give. One that may have some actual unexpected troubles thrown at you on Endless.

    It seems like colonies are far stronger than infinite resource nodes. The nodes can’t benefit well from railroads and produce very little. I managed to make a very large and hot colony but due to a bug could not continue the story. Eventually died to drying up the food and materials nodes on the map.

    Factions clearly react to the buildings one builds. If someone choses to always make Bohemian buildings, it ain't the lords not getting behind you, you are ignoring the lords.

  • @Hufdud
    @Hufdud 14 дней назад

    I feel like a good challenge run for this could be to radically pursue specific zeitgeists. Maybe once you've played some more you'll have a better idea of which one is weaker from each pair and be forced to that. So for instance adaptation seems generally a lot stronger than progress, and merit a lot stronger than equality. So you could only do research, construct buildings, and pass laws that support progress, equality, or one of tradition/reason. That way appeasing or controlling all the factions isn't nearly as trivial as you currently have it because you can't just research a law that you don't plan to use to appease a faction.

    To me it sounds like this is a great game in a similar vein as The Long Dark or Rimworld. A once in a while bug that needs to bite. But it also sounds like it needs a few things before you can start running challenges. Mostly quality of life things like big crunching sounds when laws, research, or scouts become available. Hopefully some quality modders can make that happen.
    Great game, great streamer nonetheless.
    Cheers from America.

    • @DDRJake
      @DDRJake  9 дней назад

      Frostpunk 2 needs some longevity. Once you have access to all resources and your desired laws passed, there's no reason to keep playing. Having a bigger, richer, more populous city is not motivation especially when you're placing districts instead of buildings. It's too impersonal to scratch the citybuilding itch of making a beautiful settlement.

    While I always liked the esthetics, the setting never made sense to me. Outside is very cold... OK, why wasn't the first idea to go underground? Sure, build generators on top (helps with the cooling) but have the people live in underground colonies, not on the surface, being blasted by the wind, snow and cold. There are a few communities in the game that do exactly that if I recall, but the main idea for survival of humanity was, essentially, "let's build giant generators in the middle of nowhere where we have found coal reserves and have the people live on the icy surface" seems just way too dumb. In reality, people would be digging themselves in as deep as possible, at least when it comes to houses, hospitals and general life support.

      Which is why early humanity spent thousands of years in various cave formations. Stable temperature and very good protection from the elements.
      If you lived 50 meters from the mine shaft that is being currently mined, then yes, you'd probably see it more often. Which is why you wouldn't settle in a mine that is in active use. Either a closed down mine or a very large cave system.

      Compared to FP1, this is larger, less intimate and less immersive. Is has the same good feeling of fighting against resource scarcity. Building the city is far less rewarding but laws, research and politics feel much better. Depending on what you liked about FP1, this will be good or bad.

    • @QuotenopferPseudonym
      @QuotenopferPseudonym 19 дней назад

      What I find particularly problematic is that the longer a round of Utopia progresses, the more easily many mechanics can be bypassed. For instance, during 'guided voting,' you initially lose trust in other factions, but later on, you accumulate enough tokens to fund their projects and restore that lost trust. This becomes especially apparent when you invest in oil early on and, depending on your faction, research technologies to use oil more efficiently. Even on the highest difficulty level, the game then becomes too easy
