  • It's August 2010, and new 'S-Stock' trains are being rolled out to the Metropolitan Line, and so we went with video camera in hand to go out on the network to track down the new train and compare the difference between the old A Stock, and the new units.
    Recorded on 6th August 2010.

    Imagine going back to 2010 and telling them that the Bakerloo trains that were potentially to be replaced in 2018 would actually not be due to be replaced for around 20-25 years…

    Wow - almost 7 years later. The open from end-to-end style is used on the Yonge line in Toronto and it's yielded the most interesting behavior: when there were separate cars, regular riders would know where to stand as they got on so they'd get off at their destination strategically (ie closest to the escalators, closes to the interchange tunnels). Since the Yonge line introduced "end to end", I've noticed the regular users now get on wherever they like but walk through the train to the 'ideal' exit door as their destination approaches.

    • @thesmity31
      @thesmity31 6 лет назад +4

      Good point, i've noticed this (and done it myself) on these new ones on the metropolitan line. It's easier to wait nearer the end of the platform where fewer people will be (and therefore where there are more free seats), and then get close to the door you need when you need to.

    • @OntarioTrafficMan
      @OntarioTrafficMan 6 лет назад +2

      I'm a daily commuter on the Yonge line and I definitely do this. I always ride at the south end of the train because it's less crowded (since many busy stations have entrances at the north end). As I approach my station, I walk to the north end of the train where the exit into my building is. And a lot of others do this as well, at Bloor station there is a parade of people moving southwards through the train, as people spread out along the train after boarding at the north end (where the main entrance is).

The S stock is a beautiful unit, they are very well built. Also, air con is a god send. The common misconception amongst commuters is that air con is for cooling, when actually the temp is automatically regulated for comfort. I think they are set to 22 degrees at a guess.

    Thing is tho, i think the "less seats but more standing room" is not very good, take some advice from the bus world, the more people who are sitting the happier they are. most of the time with these newer trains when it's crowded, all the seats are taken and you end up having to stand and on longer trips this can be a pain and when you do get a seat or you get the chance of getting one early it's so rock hard that you feel like standing, and I know that it's a metro train but even most metro trains aren't that hard (looking at you purple line). But I also get that those sorts of trains get extremely crowded so in my opinion they should use what I call an inline to window seat ratio. A good example of this is the b2k stock of the DLR (which are being replaced by b23 stock which is all inline)
    Thing is that you need a good balance of window seating to inline seating that takes in to acount on the type of train, route, and journey time. so yes, THE MOST OF THE NEW STOCK TFL IS GETTING IS GARBAGE FIGHT ME

      No, because the Overground history video doesn't say so.

    Lovely film, and presenter.
    The S stock will be restricted to 62mph, even after the signalling upgrades, whereas when it was built the A stock had a top speed of 70mph.

      A modern signalling system doesn't restrict trains to a reduced speed.

      I looked up the specs and apparently 62 mph is the top speed, not just one the train is limited to, so even if LU wanted to increase the service speed they couldn't.
      The A stock regularly hit 70 mph in its prime, so it's sad that such speeds won't be continuing.

    This is a well-done video, whether S stock trains are better or not. It was easy to see differences between two.
    I think I like the older one, by the way.

    0:46 well the sub surface at minimum, still got the northern and central line overcrowded or unreliable trains (in that order)

    I love to have a ride on these new trains. :-) Hopefully I should when I go to London in a couple of weeks time to connect en-route to Yorkshire.

    The tip up seats are the best to have a snooze on because if you sit and fold the tip seats you can have a snooze on the s stock.
    By the way, I love the s stock. I get it when I go on the Hammersmith & city Line.

    The S stock is quite a handsome train and makes a nice futuristic flying saucer sound. Don't like the abrupt doors.
    Here in Sydney we have S set trains dating from the 1970s nearing full retirment, though they said this in 2014 but service extensions meant many were reinstated.
