Today we look at the Theraphosa Giants the Blondi, Storm, and Apophysis the giant bird eaters , all tropical tarantulas that are very popular within the hobby but quit miss understood here's how we care for ours.

She is indeed. In fact she is the biggest spider we know of that is not living in the sea and is not a huntsman spider in terms of the leg span but she is defintely heavy 😂

Hi Dave. I continue to watch your videos with great interest and have noted your comments regarding your theraphosas. I have amongst my small collection a Theraphosa apophysis. One thing I wanted to ask you is your thoughts on employing the use of artificial plants and also artificial moss. I have considered both, especially artificial moss as it stays looking nice and green. I don’t know if it acts the same as real moss in holding in the humidity. Perhaps some time in the future you can do a little video giving advice on using or not using these artificial decorations. By the way regards to Kelly (camera lady) keep up the good work and keep doing the videos. Cheers

I've been watching your videos for a while now, and they inspired me to get a tarantula. So, on March 20th this year, I got my first tarantula! She's an Orange Bitey Thingy, and she was just over 1cm when I got her. There's something about their color and pattern that I find so captivating.
She was supposed to be the only tarantula in my collection of inverts. At least, that was the plan! Now, I have 5 slings. I spend hours watching them, even though feeding and cleaning only take a few minutes. And, I have 5 more on their way...
You did NOT get an OBT as your first tarantula!?
@@matowakan Yup, I sure did :) But don't panic. I did a LOT of research first. It just took me a while to get one because I get very emotional when Tarantulas die :( I know it is nature but I can't help how I feel. I have every enclosure she will need throughout her life. The first rehouse was very simple. I did it the beastie way, from start to finish it took less than 2 minutes, NO JOKING!. She feeds very well but she doesn't like being seen if there's no food involved lol. So, I do try to get some pictures at any opportunity and I got some videos of her one night when she was making her home :) The most adorable thing I have ever seen! :) I promise the OBT is a very good Tarantula to have provided you're not planning on holding one... I still haven't seen a threat display from her but she is young. She is also for observation ONLY. She was going to be my only one but I seem to have the bug now and can't stop buying more lol.

T. Blondi was like the Stirmi in my Imagination , if they are all adult you can clearly see the differences , the Aphophysis looks the most pretty , the Stirmi looks like a bully the most intimidating , and the blondi has probably the longest leg span with also more hair on the legs compared to the Stirmi, but kinda looks like a male to me .

Lol, I feed based on activity tbh.I have found that they stop feeding before, during and after a molt anyway so even if they get fat at times, they are back to slim and trim.In fact nearly all of the ones I keep are going into several month of fastening after they had been fed very well and then molted.
Very intriguing on keeping the blondi dry! I had a 2” blondi sling that I kept damp but not wet and it passed away. Have been wanting another one and might try the more on the dry side approach on the next one. Great info!❤

Get a bunch of Colored sticky paper dots. Select a certain color for a specific time frame. Use 2 dots if a certain species requires specialized care. Check the date on a large erasable wall calendar. If there are different things done on a different month mark the calendar to show the changes. It will help if you use a computer program to set up each month. print it out to copy to wall calendar. You should also consider going to a numbering system. Give each spider a unique number to track all information on that certain individual.

All three of those spiders are massive, I uh think I'm going to try out the Blondi but after I gain more experience with my Lasiodora parahybana, years into the future.
I use the same Ready 2 Use boxes for my GBE's and, since the climate here on the prairies in Canada is dry as a bone (especially in winter), I check and dampen the substrate daily. My T. Blondi I got as a 2.5" sling I kept in a damp small critter keeper enclosure and had a bad molt as I could not keep it damp enough ( too small). So my Theraphosas are all in the 64 litre R2U boxes ( more space for them and easier to keep up the moisture levels).
That little furry sling was so beautiful he/ she had lovely pink boots! How long do you think it will be before you can move into the spider room?

The blondi has the Stripes on her knees and the apophysis is just one color without anything 🤗
Two of my friends have blondi and I have apophysis and they look like he said 👍🏻

I've got all 3 spp multiple examples about 15cm +, keep them in 30x20x20 glass with wire mesh lid, but 2/3rd covered in perspex. Keep the 2" substrate damp once a month, small water dish, all have half cork hide 10cm. Always out, but web up entrance to hide when moulting. Feed them adult locust 1 every 2 days for about 6 days , once a month or so. All doing well.

Love the video Dave. I keep a lot of my high humidity tarantulas in large plastic containers. Genus like Lampropelma, Cyriopagopus, Phormingochilus & Davus flourish in them. However my low humidity spiders like Monocentropus, Harpactira & Tliltocotl seem to love pet pals.

It's really remarkable how different in appearance many of the slings are from the adults. They don't even look like the same species in many cases.

One thing about these big buggers, is that they tend to be slow movers, and that suits me.

Great as ever you two. Just got my first stirmi after years of keeping. Strangely I've also been getting some dwarf species too. I'm old school too. I have had to start a kind of diary as to what's fed, shed or dead. I need to adjust humidity levels all over really. The power of routines and notes are not to be underestimated.

I checked the Theraphosabloni l3 shell and I couldn't see it. I doubted it was a male. Is it normal that I can't see it at this size? Will it form late?

Hi Dave :) Do you have any good tricks for not getting mold and fungus in the substrate with theese moister dependent species, other than plenty of air circulation? How much fungus and mold do you tolerate in a box?

No mine are the stackable Lid that opens 1/3 of way, it’s a stirmi 8m getting, so what would you suggest as a humidity level for them, extra large water bowl and keep like 1/4th of the box damp

How do you say you’re stirmi sax fair over there in the UK I only ask because I am located in the central US and I just bred three large females and outside of that a sack from the largest female I have, whereas the second largest female molted it out, so just wondering how you and possibly any other breeders over there that breed stirmi’s are faring with sacs.
In regards to the husbandry aspect for all three I’ve always had the literal most success with an emulation of the soils they naturally are found in(if that weren’t obvious) but what I literally mean is nice packed (hardly packed) substrate with some coolness too the touch(dampness ??) while allowing the top layer to remain somewhat dry for the most part my apophysis female has thrived in a semi arid enclosure with damp lower levels of substrate. And my stirmi’s and blondi’s have all thrived on the damp well packed substrate with the larger females being housed in gasket sealed 34-36 qt tubs

I’m about to purchase my first stirmi, it’s a Julie and in a smaller plastic tub, I keep my room 78-80, you’ve kept these dry, moist high humidity, , what is the basic special rule about them that can help first time owner, I have medium and large size tubs just like this.

Hi Dave, I watching your Chanel 1 year now, and thanks to your Chanel I entered in this hobby. My first tarantula what I bought was Grammostola pulchripes in November 2023. Now I have collection of 33 tarantula ( and I enjoy every single moment). I remember when I got my first one my hands was shaking a bit size was 5cm. But now I have no any problems. Yesterday I got one new SA female 12cm . Most of my collection is new world tarantulas, but 4 months ago I got my first old world Poecilotheria metallica, and last month Harpactira pulchripes, Monocentropus Balfouri. Looking to get Poecilotheria regalis but few months now I have no luck to get hand on one :(

Your video came at the perfect time for me! I have what I believe to be a stirmi, but I thought it was an apophysis when I rescued it in the beginning of May. It was underfed and housed in an inch of wood chips, in a too small enclosure. It originally came from petco and it was there for at least six months or more before it was bought by the in experienced people I got it from. I had it housed in a tote about the same size as your adults are in. I then set it up in a twenty gallon long tank, bioactive. It molted eleven days ago, and ate yesterday. But it’s now a beautiful burgundy color and looks like only front feet a pink. Is a more moist and humid enclosure not going to be beneficial if it is indeed a stirmi?

These like a humid burrow , I keep mine dry on top with a little dampness in the burrow generally but they can tolerate it quit dry for long periods, if in doubt keep moist 👍
Thank you Dave! It seems to be very content. It is a very special tarantula to me, and I only want what is best for it! But then again, all my tarantulas and true spiders are very special!
Dream species of mine is the T. stirmi. They're awesome but so so expensive in the UK, and in general honestly. £75 for a sling near me, unfortunately, but hopefully someday

Jesus H Christ Dave, those are some big effing spiders, sorry for the language on your family friendly show. But they are so big I am concerned they could suddenly jump out, drag you to the floor, and subdue you with brutal blows, vicious bites, and a blinding storm of urticating hairs. They could if they wanted. To be safe, you and camera lady should arm yourselves with huge paintbrushes.

Very good question! As far as I know they do "kind of" hibernate by just "relaxing" in a way we can't. Spiders in general have a very very different metabolism which is very obvious if you find out about some species ability to survive on water only for up to one year and more. Sometimes when Dave is rehousing them it really does looks like he has to "wake them up" to get them going...
