Sock knitting is my ‘sanity’….. I’m never without a pair on the NEEDLES. I knit two-at-a-time on two separate ChiaoGoo needles. So although they are not both completed at the same ‘moment’, they are like twins - the second sock is completed shortly after the first. Definitely a ‘process knitter’. Always top-down. The ‘magic moment’ is when you follow the directions for the heel turn and suddenly you have this petite little cup that will hold your heel, you’ve created this 90* angle, and your sock has changed direction. I never understood why I didn’t like two on the same needle, but as Jonna explained her feelings, I understood my own. I learned to knit socks watching Jana of Knit Together on RUclips. You two are so much fun……. Thanks for the knitting chat and the laughter.

I've knit a lot of socks. My favorite way is magic loop, TAAT, cuff down, heel flap and gusset. I've knit birthday socks for many people but my favorite was red, white and blue patriotic socks for a friend who ended up in a nursing home (way too young)after a bad surgery. He passed away and at the funeral, his wife told me he loved those socks so much that she buried him in them. I wasn't sure how to feel but she made it clear those socks were appreciated. I believe what the Yarn Harlot said to true, you only knit socks for people you love.

I love all the fun and laughter of your videos, I'm so glad I found Knit Together With Kim and Jonna. I once said that I would never relearn to knit just to make socks. LOL Never say Never, about five years ago I picked up needles again to make some dish cloths and never looked back; now I'm working on my first pair of toe up socks using magic loop.

Hi and thank you for sharing. About picking up the heel stitches. If you don't do the first row in the main color, but leave it where the pattern tells you to. You knit your flap and everything else you need to knit in the contrasting color. Then you brak that yarn, move the heel stitches on your right needle back to the left needle, and then start with your main color to pick up stitches on the right side of the heel, den knit the heel stitches and then pick up on the left side. That works great without having to break the main color yarn.

Hello, I’m in Devon UK deep in the beautiful countryside. I love using two 16inch or 24 inch circular needles for knitting socks but I knit two at the same time by knitting 10 rows on one and then 10 rows on the other and marking with those lovely little bulb pins. I love doing it like this I don’t get into a tangle and they are both still portable, I keep each sock in its own organza bag and with its own Cocoknits stitch counter. I love knitting with the two circulars, it has such a lovely rhythm. Thank you for your lovely podcasts, I love watching and listening to you both, it brightens my day.

It's how you hold the needles.
Your third and fourth fingers of the left hand should be inside the triangle giving yourself leverage.
The other two needles holding stitches must be on top of the needle you are currently knitting stitches from.
This gives you a firmer grasp of your work.
Try them again this way...its much easier once these rules are followed. For continental knitting your index finger is still free for the yarn.
      Good luck.

Chiagoo has a mini interchangeable sock needles that are a 3 inch and a 2 inch needle. You can also buy those individually. I use one of the 3 inch and one of the 2 inch, which makes a 10 inch, perfect for fingering weight socks. If you cast on with the longer needle it sets you up to have the longer needle in your right hand makes it a more comfortable knit. It’s also great to do your color work with them. Also with the Addi needles their size (1) is a 2.5mm, where Chiagoo’s size (1) is a 2.25mm. I really enjoy your show.

I started to knit socks 40 years ago. I started with bamboo dpns and I had to test every new needle. I still love dpns but I have black ones out of Carbon from prym, which I like very much. They don‘t have a sharp tip, it‘ more like a little ball at the tip. And I love my pair of signatures, they have really sharp tips and tge are good for lace and cable patterns.
I don‘t cut the MC when I knit the heel in a CC. I knit the heel with CC, cut the string and then I pick up stitches on the right side of the heel with the MC, knit the left stitches and pick up stitches on the left side of the heel. The beginning of the round is now at the side of the sock.
It‘s so much fun to watch yout podcast!

Kim & Jonna, I really enjoy your podcasts! I have been a sock knitter for a while now and your tips are bang on. I use 2 circs when I knit in the round. I can do magic loop, but 2 circs is my comfort zone. I really like your tip about making two 50 gram cakes. BUT, be careful when you do that with self striping or self patterning yarn. After you wind off your first 50 gram cake from the 100 gram cake, you need to wind off your second 50 gram cake as well. Otherwise the stripes or patterns will be reversed on your second sock. OR you could pull from the center of the first cake and work from the outside on the second cake. Hope that makes sense.

Hey, I always knit my socks with the Chiagoo Mini Set. I tried TPN, Magicloop, but these Miniset is just incredible!
So because for one sock you use one short and one long needle, you could also knit 2 socks at the time because you have 4 needles in each size and 3 cables in the set. So you just have to put them together.

    Hi Girls,
Great episode. Lot's of information. Thank you.
I am a continental knitter, I use ChiaoGoo 9" circulars, size 0 thru 4 depending on the yarn. After I got used to these needles, I was able to knit so much faster and not worry about laddering or losing needles out of my work, they really changed my love for sock knitting. I do put my heel stitches on DPN's, I find that goes much faster. Crazy Sock Lady has a great pattern and tutorial for socks on 9" circulars.
I often make two socks at the same time, I just have them on separate needles.
Loved the tip about not cutting the yarn for contrast heel.
    Take care and stay safe.

This is the year of the sock for me. I’ve been working on DPNs but my next pattern is done on two 16” needles (new to me!). And now I can’t wait to try Magic Loop.
One tip I learned about knitting with DPNs from my Norwegian sisters-in-law is to rotate the stitches to different needles about every inch or so. I knit to the last four stitches on the needle and then knit those onto a fresh needle (you know - that 5th needle that no one knows what it’s for :-)) and continue on to the last four stitches of the next needle. Repeat until the entire round of stitches is covered. No ladders, ever. More even tensioning across the knitting.
    Happy knitting!

Love knitting socks and mitts. Learned how on 2 9" but moved on to magic loop even 2-at-a-time. I do love my Flexi Flips a bunch! I have ChiaoGoo interchangeables for sweaters and shawls, but love Hiya Hiya's stabby tips for lace and socks. DPNs are great for tiny projects like toys or Christmas ornaments. I have no use for straights! Maybe if I were to knit a long-term blanket of mitered squares, maybe it would be cool to have dedicated straights, but until that day, I passed on my ancient straight needles to a teen knitter in 2015.

I tried 9" circular this past summer. I found I like 9" Chia Goo needles for travel projects (walks, car or plane knitting). 2 at a time just take up too much space moving the socks/cord/needles. For patterned socks where I want the socks to match, I do 2 at a time on a huge Chia Goo Size 0 needle. I was taught on DPN and hated them. Thankfully I took a sock class and learned magic loop. Then it wasn't much of a leap to 2 at a time. I always do Fish Lips Kiss Heel so I don't have to cut my main color and I weave in the end of the contrast heel color as I knit the first row (using Very Pink Knits video on weaving in ends).

I don’t enjoy knitting two at a time on magic loop either. What I have done, and enjoyed because both socks were done at the same time, is knit two socks on dpns at the same time. Basically, two sets of dpns and I knit the cuff on one and then the other and then the leg on each etc. I love the Addi flexi-flips but they really make my wrists hurt so that’s a no-go. I’ve tried magic loop but I don’t love it. Short circulars are ok but tend to make my wrists hurt like the Addis do.

Lovely podcast. Super fun to watch. I started knitting socks 2 at a time thinking that I would love it. Both socks done at the same time…..what’s not to love about that…. Well turns out that I enjoy knitting one at a time as well and I also find doing 2 at a time annoying rather than relaxing. I have never ever had second sock syndrome as when I finish the first one I am excited to start the second one to get her done and wear them. I also find that like Kim I only focus mainly on one project until it is done. My exception is that I always also have a current sock project going. Depending on what I am doing or how I feel at the time determines which project I will work on. Lol. I am a toe up girl and absolutely love the Addi flexi flips for knitting my socks.

Hi Kim & Jonna, I just discovered you two and have been binge watching all of your episodes.
My first sock was actually a Christmas stocking using worsted weight scrap yarn. It was kinda funky looking and I eventually frogged it, but it was a great way to learn sock construction. My first pair of fingering weight socks also were funky looking as I was getting used to my 9” circulars. I eventually frogged them, also. But they were a great learning experience (I think I’m more process knitter than product knitter.)
My favorite sock pattern is the Crazy Sock Lady’s vanilla socks on 9’ circulars. Her tutorials made it so easy to learn to use my 9’ circulars.
My favorite method of knitting socks is top down with slip-stitch heel. I like to use mostly 9’ circulars, switching to magic loop for the heels and the toes. I love Chiao Goo. I use size 1 and cast on 56 stitches. I love the Chiao Goo shorties. I am primarily a continental knitter, and I like putting a 3’ tip on for my right hand and a 2’ tip on for my left hand. The shorties took a whole pair of socks to get used to and get the muscle memory, but now I absolutely love using them. I have used dpns and flexi flips to knit with, but I hate how I seem to constantly drop one of the needles down in the chair and couch cushions. I have done some knitting with 2 circulars, but didn’t love that. So, I definitely prefer small circulars and magic loop. Happy Knitting.

I'm a long-time sock knitter, and a *total* dpn fan. "Magic loop" for me feels like "floppy loop" -- whether it's for socks or mitts or whatever. I've tried the tiny (9" or 10") circs but -- even though I'm a "flicker" (I throw with my right forefinger, a variation on the British style of knitting) -- I like something to hang onto. My favourite DPN length is 6", though I can handle 5" ones. Shorter than that there's nothing to hang onto.
RE: Ladders on dpns -- if you purl the first stitch on at least the first round, or in ribbing do the purls first -- there will be a ladder at first but it disappears. This would work for joining in the round with circs too. 🙂

I used them to make a knee-high full of butterflies socks from "52 weeks of socks" book and it was my first colorwork and it was pretty easy to work with flexible DPNs!
Also I love wearing my aran (10ply) socks in my skechers walking shoes, so soft and cozy! 😄
Jonna's making her left and right socks is just pure logic. About 30 years ago i was already a good knitter only haven't knitted sockes yet, and my grandma in words explained me how to knit socks and she mentioned to make left and right in same maner as Jonna makes them (we were busy working in her garden, so she couldn't show me, but in words she explained very well). Later that year I managed to create my first sock 😄 (though i forgot to make gusset 😅). I beleave all techniques are already out there in the world, we just have to remember them, or use logic to get them back 😊 old recipes that we can find are not very detailed that's why we have to "create" it all over again 😄

My first socks were on dpn on worsted weight yarn, then moved to 2AAT toe up. After trying different methods , heels, cast ons and toes I now I use 9" circulars knitting my socks in tandem. I do my heels/toes using dpns. Love sock knitting. Also use the light bulb stitch markers.

I used to knit Continental, I used to use magic loop, I used to knit 2aat socks on ML. One day I put my knitting down and moved on to another hobby. Weaving. I went years on a knitting hiatus because I just didn’t like it anymore. I didn’t love my method, I didn’t love the fabric I produced, I didn’t love the motion. One day I was watching Sweet Georgia, who I usually watch for weaving vids, and I saw how she knitted. Irish lever style. I decided to reinvent how I knit and I am loving the new mojo. I now knit like McPhee. Right handed. I love love love 5 dpns. One sock at a time. I cast on with wood or bamboo then after a couple of rounds switch to metal. My needles don’t fall out. The rhythm of the hands and the dance of the needles is what makes a hobby zen. I am knitting my first sweater on 2 circs because to me it almost feels like dpns and I don’t like the bunny ears of magic loop. My fabric and tension is perfect now if I do say so myself. I call myself a born again knitter. The motion of the process is such an important part of the process. I don’t get joy from 2aat socks. I believe I will get joy from 2aat sleeves on 2 circs though. LOL. I want to get through the sleeves so I can finish the sweater to start something else.

@@KnitTogetherwithKimJonna It felt outrageously awkward at first after years of Continental. But I was determined and persevered… and knit very slowly; but in no time I got the hang of it. I modified it a tiny bit. Stephanie Purl McPhee uses her ring finger only. I use middle and index together. It goes under and around my middle and over my index instead. I hold the needle like a pencil as she does and the motion is like a shuttle like she does. Give it a try some time. I would honestly love to have every style of knitting in my repertoire. It can come in very handy.

Love, love, love knitting - and in particular socks. I’ve knit at least two pairs of socks per month for the last 25 years or so. I’ve given almost all of the socks away - mostly to strangers on the bus, in an airplane, at train stations, in restaurants - any place where someone comments on the socks or talks to me about knitting. For fit reasons I knit mostly plain ribbed socks with heel flaps - I find those most forgiving in size. I am absolutely a DPN gal - 4 DPNs for the cuff, and then 5 DPNs for the leg, foot, and toe. My beginning of round is usually at the center back. One tip for those of us whose eyes are getting “old” and who knit in low light situations is to use non-colored metal needles. The glint of the metal makes it easy to see and count the stitches on the needles. I also use the “cast on an extra stitch” trick (I think probably learned from Roxanne Richardson) to prevent the “dip” I used to get when I joined in the round without this tip. Until the next time. Salam wa sa’aadah

I don’t really consider giving socks away as being “generous”. I do it more for myself than really for the recipients. Knitting socks is my meditation/stress relief/stopping the chatter in my head. I couldn’t stand the thought of having all those knitted socks around the house. I’d never wear them and it would stress me out to no end having drawers and boxes of socks lying around unused. The joy I get from giving the socks to someone who is totally not expecting it, and the conversation we have around the making of the socks, is a total “feeling wonderful” experience for me. I think I’m the one who gets the most out of the act of knitting and giving of the socks. Plus I get to play with the colors and textures of the yarn, think about and fiddle with the patterns, and the instant gratification of finishing such a small pattern. Getting sock yarn on destashes, garage sales, or on sale in yarn shops means the price doesn’t break the bank either. I feel so very lucky that I can give socks to other people “just because. . . “. Salam wa sa’aadah

I finally had socks click when i discovered 9" needles. I will use 2 16" if I'm starting toe up, but switch to9" as soon as it's comfortable. Magic loop and taat make me crazy. I did buy a pair of flexiflips to try soon. Right now I'm obsessed with dk weight socks, using the Vanilla is the new black heel. So mindless, it's a great on the go project.

DK or worsted are excellent in heavy duty boots for cold outdoor work. I also wear them in my Birks, but I prefer sock weight yarn for socks. Leaned DK weight socks 40 years ago. I learned on DPN's and still use them some, I also use Magic Loop, and have a hybrid method for short (I prefer 11 inch) circs/DPN's. Do the heels and toes on DPN's and the rest of it on circs. Slowly coming to prefer Magic Loop. Haven't done two at a time yet.

I knit on 9” 0mm chiagoo circular needle continental for the instep. Yes, it cramps my hands if I am holding the yarn double and if the yarn is very stiff. I have small hands, so it is not so bad. I hear people with big hands don’t like them at all. I start with DPNs for the cuffs and switch over to 9” circular after the heel turn and decrease. I never knit toe up or magic loop.
I learned how to knit during the lock down last year. I had a few failed attempts in prior years. When podcasters and people that try to give ‘how-to’ instructions to knit socks, the needle 1,2,3, confused the day lights out of me. So I taught myself how to knit by the jest of what they mentioned.
I knit the heel flap on the first set (front) of stitches, not the back. It work fine. Not sure if what I am doing is kosher, but I’ve knitted three dozen pairs already. Thanks for sharing your socks knowledge! Keep up the awesome work! ❤️❤️

Interesting about where you put your seams. Now...I don't do a lot of colour-work socks. I use my cast on tail as my BOR marker and when I divide for the heel, I ensure I have the same number of stitches on either side of that tail. I put the heel there -- and the "seam" there. I use 3 dpns + 1 to knit with most of the time, but sometimes 4 + 1, if the pattern (lace, for example) has a repeat that "needs" that layout. When I translate patterns written for circs, I adapt it so I can have my "seam" up the back of my leg.

I was a crocheter first so am used to working with the yarn in my left hand, I knit one dishcloth (terrible) then did DK socks on a small circular and naturally knit continental - a year in and now an adventurous novice knitter (i have to push myself out of my comfort zone which is socks) I switch between continental and English knitting to give my hands a break as that is my biggest gripe with small circs - I have tried 2 at a time and ended up with knots in my cables 😂 and now only do 2 at a time on 2 separate 9” circs - I will try again but not until my chiaogoo long circs arrive 😊

I enjoy magic loop with 32” 2.25mm needles. I also do two at a time but I do them concurrently. Basically I knit a certain amount on one needle and then put that down, pickup the other and knit that same amount. I cannot imagine knitting one and start from scratch the other. I would never finish the socks! 😂 I have done two at a time on one 40” needle but I don’t enjoy it as much. Socks are very rewarding. I have a high instep and been playing with short row heels because I like it but it’s a bit tight. My best fit is the heel flap and gussets. Great tips.
