Have you tried Green Spot?
fortunately.
Yes Sirr! Its one of my faves right now. Thank you again for your reviews and content Bill.
I'm realizing that this is a divisive whiskey
It's either people prefer Green Spot or Redbreast.
I prefer Green Spot with it's light and fruity Character. 😁
Are you someone who typically likes Irish Whiskey?
I love the stories behind every review Fantastic well done, cheers!
Thank you!
Great to see that you’ll be reviewing some more Irish whiskeys. Note that Red Spot was only reintroduced in the last year or so, so hopefully it’s only a matter of time before we see a Blue Spot. Some facts to follow from what you said about Irish Distillers, they’re now owned by Pernod Ricard and based out of Midleton Distillery in County Cork. The most famous brands Irish Distillers own are Jameson, Powers, and Redbreast, but they produce whiskey (mainly pot still and some grain) for countless brands like Spot Whiskey and Paddy. Great review as always!
Thanks David!
This was great. Thanks. I would love to get a bottle of Green Spot. Haven't seen it before. The history behind the whiskey was great. I truly enjoy good historical stories about where a whiskey comes from. Thanks for the effort you put into this channel.
Thanks for watching! Comments like yours are encouraging!
I like Green Spot, and I love the Chateau Leoville Barton edition. Yellow spot is also fantastic! I have the Chateau Montelena which I haven't tried yet, and I'm still on the hunt for Red Spot... I highly recommend them all based on what I have had from the series.
I put out my video on yellow spot yesterday and red spot will come out tomorrow!
Hi there, Emiel here from Amsterdam. Thanks for all of your great reviews and nice background information. It is a pity we live so far away otherwise i would love to have a whisky tasting night. I recognise your enthusiasm in my own and that of my whisky loving friends. Keep up te good work! And many thanks again👍
What are some of your favorite whiskies available over there?
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary My favorites are the heavily peated ones, Laphroaig Lore and recently I have discovered Port Askaig 100 proof at cask strength which I find superb and also very affordable (48 euro's). Also Redbreast 12 I liked but inspired by your review on the cask strength Redbreast I have recently bought this and what a difference! Super rich and many more layers of flavour compared to the normal 12.
Also your philosophy of saving up for the more expensive whisky's I recognized. Nowadays my shelf consists of cheaper whiskies in the region of 20-30 euro and on the golden shelf the better stuff in the price range 70-100 euro. The middle price region is nice but I find it better to save for some better ones. Talking whiskies haha it can go on forever. Best regards
Great, quick review. I enjoy all of the spot whiskeys and would suggest they are quality representations of Irish. Cheers!
Do you have a favorite of the three?
As always, Thanks for the comprehensive review. I've tried many blended Irish Whiskys but am now ready to explore Single Pot Still expressions. I'm intrigued by the mix of malted & unmalted barley plus the use of the pot still. Great to have Irish Single Pot Still and Scotch Whisky to compare & contrast.
Green Spot is delicious stuff, but agree on the 'shame' it's a bit thin and only 40%. Roy sent me a sample months ago of the Chateau Leoville Barton version, finished in Bordeaux casks and at 46%. Big difference, and really enjoyed it! Yet to try any others yet, but keen to give the Yellow a go next.
Good point about the high price of Green/yellow/red spot. All of their expressions are significantly higher than the Redbreast equivalents. The Redbreast 12 cast strength is about $85 where I live, yet the Yellow spot (12 year) is around $120 and is 46% ABV.
I am a novice whiskey drinker, having only started a couple of months ago. So far, Green Spot is my favorite, maybe in competition with Glenfiddich 12. Still haven't made my mind up if I prefer Scotch, Irish. or Bourbon whiskeys. Trying to figure it out though is fun.
No reason to pick! I never did!
I’m in the same boat!
Great start to your Irish whiskey month, Bill. I haven't had the Green Spot for a few years, but your views pretty much mirror mine. Nice, but was hoping for more. I've also heard there are plans to bring back the Blue Spot, which would be great. Really looking forward to your upcoming reviews. Sláinte from the Emerald Isle!
I need to make it to Ireland one of these days!
The Whiskey Dic You sure do! There’s a big renaissance in Irish whiskey & loads of new distilleries are popping up. When you get round to it, hit me up & I’d be more than happy to assist👍
I really like 🍏 and anything green apple flavored. This is definitely only my short list to try. Thanks for the review!!
Enjoy!
It's green apple but not sour green apple.
Writers Tears is the move. Green apple laffy taffy on the nose for me!
Recently opened a bottle and it does taste delicious. Will try the Yellow Spot. Thanks for the suggestion.
I hope you enjoy it!
If you could only buy one (right now), would you choose Green Spot or Redbreast 12?
Tough call. Redbreast 12
The Whiskey Dic Thanks! I’ll pick one up tomorrow.
Good timing on this video. A friend just got back from Ireland and brought a bottle of Green Spot Chateau Monteluna (its name derives from the fact it's finished in casks from the Napa Valley winery of the same name, which won the competition in the white wine category in the "Judgment of Paris"). So, I got to try it just Friday night. It was delicious, more complex than the regular Green Spot, if memory serves. I am not generally a fan of Irish whiskey. I've had Green Spot, but it's been a long time and I was not particularly impressed. I do like Redbreast 12 and Redbreast 12 Cask Strength Edition, however, both of which are in my cabinet right now.
I'll be reviewing both of those this month! I hope you enjoy!
This is next on my to buy list I think. Has been for a while. Thanks for the review.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I'm sitting here with a bottle of Green Spot CLB and it's waaaay different than regular Green Spot. The green apple fis barely noticeable and then there's a lot of red fruit going on. It being 46% ABV definitely helps it as well.
Makes sense being more influenced by red wine
Thanks for the introduction Bill looks great 🥃
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Just picked up green spot ($65 in PA). I found it really nice on the nose but slightly lacking on the taste. Not a bad taste but no redbreast 12. Have you reviewed Writers Tears yet?
Not yet. Good suggestion
I agree on design - bottles look cool. They do taste very good, but do they really worth the money?
If you're gonna buy any of the 3 spots available I would go with the yellow
The Whiskey Dic I have it, because it was $80, but in Alberta it’s only $78 CAD. Now this is very good price!
Every whiskey aged over 6 years should be 46% because paying $80 for a 40% product is not a good deal at all. The strength of 40% should be limited to the blends under $40. As for Green Spot, it is a whiskey with a flavour profile and mouth feel unlike any other. The pot still technique gives it a thick, oily and viscous feel even though it isn't thick at all. There is always a bottle on my shelf. As for the deluxe versions of Green Spot, the Leoville Barton is the better of the two. The Montelena is matured in zinfandel barrels which offer a flavor that is too subtle and adds too little to the finished product to justify the extra 18 euro price.
Seen reviews where they pickup coconut, wonder if it’s the toasted grainy note you picked up.
I have picked up coconut before in my reviews so I think it's something a little different, but I could be convinced.
I just got myself a bottle after it was not available in Quebec for almost 2 + years. I taste the spice and the sweet and a pleasant bready-ness but mostly I taste a weird woodiness, like a wooden stir stick has been soaking in my drink. It is not quite off putting but for almost 90$ I am not yet impressed.
Had way too much at a recent staff party, all the tastier as it was free. Turned some colleagues onto it too
Usually when I drink too much of anything inavoid it. Speaks to this that you had a lot and still recommend
Not as much that I wouldn't order again, but you were correct in saying it's quite light. At home I prefer a heavier one
Loving March Irish month. This is a category that is amazing but gets little love
I completely agree. It's not the most complex of the categories but it's one that is widely ignored among my WhiskeyTube peers.
Redbreast 12 kills this, Green Spot tastes like paint thinner. Even Tullamore Dew tastes like heaven compared to this, I'm annoyed I spent 60 bucks on this but I'm learning.
Great review as always!!! Will definitely give it a try😄
Thanks! You should
This is just such a delicious whiskey for beginners. I actually nicknamed it "the great seducer".
Having said that, a problem is really the abv, that makes it taste a little watery sometimes. I wish they would just add 3% - it would really help. So I bought the Leoville Barton to taste GS with a better abv (46%) but, sadly, I don't really like what the wine-cascs are doing to the spirit. (Which is kinda funny, considering their history.)
That is a little surprising now I'm not sure that I have seen the other versions of green spot in stores before so I would guess it's not as widely distributed which means that people probably feel the way that you do about it
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary Actually that could be just me and my palate, I'm not saying it's bad whiskey. Availability in europe is: Just two mouse-clicks away.
The Whiskey Dic Bill, GS with finishing cost same like YS and has same YS ABV
I dont get thin when i drink green spot for 40%, yes its thin because its 40% but its not thin for being 40%. I have had many other whiskey's that are much more thin at the same abv. I wonder now if there is much bottle to bottle variance or does drinking way more pot still whiskey will acclimate your palate do the irish pot still flavors thus making the flavors not as strong. Either way good whiskey, just wish it was points were closer to 45, 70, 90 instead of 60, 100, 130 area.
That's a fair way of putting it. As I mentioned on the video, I kind of wish it was just a little bit higher ABV. I also agree with the pricing. I wonder why it's as high as it is.
My very amateur opinion...Pears, apples and raisins. So delicious. My new favorite
Holds up well on ice for an 80 proof.
Green spot is one i go back to frequently. Its great
curious if u know the ph of green spot, thank you sir
The ph as in the acidity?
I'd love to try these higher end Irish whiskeys but they're so expensive! I'm not sure how much the green spot is here, but I know it's more than I feel comfortable spending on a single bottle; especially for 80 proof, or near 80. Red Breast 12 hovers around $75 here, and I'm spoiled for good bourbon at near the lowest prices in the US, so I can get two phenomenal 100 proof or higher bourbons for one bottle of entry level, 80 proof, craft Irish whiskey
One day.... Lol
I hear ya. It's definitely a hard choice sometimes. I personally value variety but not everyone does. I'm one of few youtubers who cover all styles of whiskey, and my love of variety is part of the reason why
The Whiskey Dic i enjoy your review and wasn’t knocking your choice of whiskey. I just can’t spend as much as good Irish whiskey costs, and from a financial perspective, there are a lot of other good choices for much less. $70 for a bottle of anything is expensive

Montelena is in Cali. LOL
PS that was a really good review. I like the green spot best (over yellow and red) but i must say if they went 43 or 46 it would kill.
Yea, but the words are French. I realized while editing that it came off wrong. Thanks though!
Not complex
Nope can't like this review.. don't care about hooyas distillery.. came for a review of green spot....
Maybe your new to my channel, if so, welcome!
Every time I review a whiskey from a new distillery I always talk about the distillery first. After that I discuss the whiskey.
The goal of my channel is and has always been to educate about whiskey and do more than just nosing and tasting.
Have you tried Green Spot? It's pretty good stuff!
