    Todd had once said that the Nazz were supposed to be a combination of The Beach Boys, The Beatles, and The Who. So it's not a coincidence that you mentioned all three in this video. And yes, I always thought Thom MOONey was doing his best Keith Moon impression on the song "Under The Ice". 😀

    • @grimtraveller7923
      @grimtraveller7923 6 месяцев назад

      Yeah, it's funny, I came to the same conclusion about Thom Mooney on the song "Under the ice." I've long felt he was a better Keith Moon than Keith Moon because he was anything but a one-trick pony. He could belt the shit out of the drums at high speed with ridiculously lightning fills and patterns.....but he was also a very varied drummer which Keith never was.
      Mooney is also a very interesting latterday spokesman about Nazz. There's an interesting interview with him and Stewkey at ruclips.net/video/b23JwnL4-7c/видео.html&ab_channel=RundgrenRadio - definitely worth a listen. Some interesting info about the third album is in the interview.

    I requested Nazz when he made the Todd Rundgren's Utopia ranking. It was disappointing that group only lasted a couple of years. I like the hard rocker songs like "under the ice", "open my eyes". But by the end Todd wrote too many ballads inspired by Laura Nyro and that's what made the rest of the band upset.
    I read that the bass player became a cartoonist for Walt Disney.

I’m going in order. 1-the first ( debut). 2- NAZZ Nazz -3- 111. ( third album). Thanks again. Pete for Your time 👍💯

    What a great surprise to see Nazz come up in the Ranking The Album shows. Been looking forward to this - as well as the upcoming solo Todd album ranking. Agreed that Nazz III is the bottom of the three but the first two generally hold a close race for the 1 and 2 positions depending on the day. Today it's the first album as top keeping them favorites in the order the were released. There a 'box' set of the Complete Nazz released in 2019 for anyone looking to expand their Nazz collection. Thanks for this ranking, Pete. These short catalogues still make for great Ranking The Albums episodes.

      I have quite a bit from them: s/t, Another Time Another Place, Creation, For Sale & Live At Lake Charles. I'd say that for me Creation was their high water mark. I also have Filigree And Shadow which is the 1st album plus rare live & singles tracks - the sound isn't totally horrible (and better than many boots). A nice collection for the FT fan, along with their 'best of' San Francisco Girls

    Hey Pete, long tome viewer here, first I wanna thank you for this channel, you basically introduced me into the magical world of prog, and I am forever grateful that you did. I recently thought of a neat topic for you to discuss: musicians who has some sort of a golden touch, musicians that were on a few different albums with different bands or made appearance on some solo album and just because they were there the album has some sort of magic to it. Like in my opinion Bill Buford or Richard Sinclair, John wetton. Hope you consider this topic if you didn't already cover it, thank you!

    Agree with you Pete. The 2nd album is my favorite as well. Forget All About It and Under The Ice are my the best tracks on the LP. Todd's guitar playing is amazing on both. Plus, Thom Mooney's drumming on Under The Ice is very reminiscent of Keith Moon. Forget All About It is a power pop classic.

Live At Paramount (1972) & Live Vancouver Bc, 1983-05-27 are also quite good...The two newest records are good but not exactly "Guess Who" - I have 'em labeled under "The (NEW) Guess Who" in my database to differentiate it from the 'real'/earlier band

    I used to have a compilation album of sixties psychedelic rock gems, which had like Strawberry Alarm Clock, Amboy Dukes , and “Open My Eyes” by Nazz. Wish I still had that album because I think it’s fairly collectible now. Never heard any more Nazz but I really played that one song a lot back in the day. Great guitar hook by Todd!

      Believe it or not, the band weren't called "the" Nazz, just Nazz.
      And before they were called Alice Cooper, that band were called the Nazz. It was the release of Nazz's first album that necessitated a name change for Alice Cooper, via calling themselves the Earwigs.

      @shanestanfield79
      "He fully had guitar hero moments on these albums!"
      I think one of the major problems one finds in looking at Nazz is that they are looked at so retrospectively which means that they are looked at as Todd Rundgren's outfit before the Todd we all came to know.
      But the reality is that Nazz were a band. Stewkey was a really good vocalist and useful keyboardist, Carson was a complimentary bassist and wrote some good songs and Thom Mooney was a drummer that many bands would have loved to have had {and contributed to a song or two}. Todd wrote great songs and played a mean guitar, but it should also be noted that it was his songs, his Laura Nyro influenced songs, that went a long way towards breaking up Nazz and it was them being left of that second album that makes it so strong and the third one relatively weak....
      Rundgren was a pretty versatile person in Nazz and the band couldn't have been what it was without him - but the band was much more than Todd Rundgren and his guitar playing is what it was because of the dynamics of the entire band.
