Subscribers reported that the 1.5mm thermal pads on the VRAM were too thick and they had thermal issues, they used 1mm and the issue was resolved.
Perhaps it depends on the revision of the card since there are at least 2 revisions. I have V341 Ver: 2.1
Either arctic pads are thicker (I used cheap Chinese pads), or not so soft...
So if you are getting worse temps, swap those 1.5mm ones on VRM with 1.0mm

Best video of applying thermal pads so far, because of the camera angle

  • @presshun
    @presshun 3 года назад +20

Hi, so I have the same card and when I changed the pads and the paste (MX-4) according to your video, the temp went up significantly. The problem was that the 1.5 mm pads (Arctic) were too thick and kept the cooler further away from the chip than it should have been... I think the problem was that the pads were not flexible enough, or I couldn't apply enough force to deform them. So what I did, I removed them and flattened them with a small rolling pin (Yes I did) to about ~1,3-1,5x the size (~75% thickness). It worked perfectly. Gpu working at 100% while the fans are at 34%. I'm only afraid that the pads will get their shape back. But we'll see, I will post an update in a few days. And thanks for the video, it was very helpful!

    • @MindaugasJocionis

That's interesting! At first, I used 1mm pads, and they were too thin, there was a visible gap. After that, I tried to put them on top of each other so that the thickness was 2mm. Got the same result as yours, GPU temp was spiking rapidly as there was no good contact of GPU die and radiator. So then I ordered 1,5mm and everything was perfect. I used Chinese pads from Ali express.
It's cool that you figured out how to deal with that. And thanks for the feedback :)

Hi everyone, I followed this tutorial video using Artic Thermal Pad 1.5mm and 1mm (ref.APT2560), well I had a really big issue because the GPU was working on 70°c avg but after using the new thermal pad gpu reached to 89°c, so after a good while checking and prooving I realize the problem are those thermal pads over the Vram (1.5mm) I change them for 1mm pad and it's solved (I proved whitout pad and differece is 1 or 2°c). That was my experience, now gpu is working on 58-60°c (100%). To Mindaugas Jocionis thanks for the tutorial.

Yours has different cooling, so thermal pads thickness will be different. Disassemble it and measure, it will bee the cheapest way.
There is no point in putting pads on those memory chips (three black squares), as the gap to the radiator is around 1cm (actually later revisions use such huge thermal pads, but I think it's pointless). I think they cool better by airflow from the fan.
If your thermal pads are in good shape, there is no point in changing them. Better change the thermal paste on GPU die and clean radiator from dust.

In this case, there will be a gap between the VRAM pads and the heatsink, and the VRAM will not cool properly. This will not affect the temperature of your GPU die, as it only rises sharply if the thermal pads are too thick.
Pads from different manufacturers have different softness, so the best solution is to buy several different thicknesses pads and try them out while monitoring the temperature of the GPU.
In other words, the thermal pad should not be too thick, and not too thin, and it should compress a little to make good contact.

    • @MindaugasJocionis

The higher the thermal conductivity, the better the thermal pads. Hardness is also important. If the thermal pads are too stiff, the heat sink may not touch the GPU die, even if the thermal pad thickness is correct.
Thermal conductivity is measured in W/mK.

It is necessary to measure. Even after that, the thermal pad has a different softness. Therefore, the best solution is to buy several thicknesses and try them out. If the GPU temperature skyrockets, they are too thick as the GPU die does not have good contact due to the thermal pad being too thick (the heatsink will be too high).

    • @MindaugasJocionis

No, you have to use thermal pads, as they transfer VRAM heat to the radiator. (unless the cooling design is made in that way, that airflow is cooling them directly, in that case, the manufacturer will not put them)
If your GPU die temps are dropping, when you remove thermal pads, probably there is bad pressure on the GPU die and radiator.
If your thermal pads thickness is correct, you can try to find softer thermal pads, or try to squish them a bit.

It might be a bad contact or leaked heatpipe. First of all, take out all thermal pads, and check is there any temp drop (if temps drops then it's bad contact due to too thick thermal pads). Then, check heatpipe at the end of the radiator is it hot or cold. Is your power limit at 0 in wattman? And what temps do you get now, are they increasing rapidly or slowly? Subscribe, thank you.

As for thermal paste: packaging depends on the packaging size and edition (original or 2019). Big ones come in a box, small ones in a bag. The red circle means 2019 edition. (Even on the official site there is a picture with the 2019 edition - red circle). So probably your's was original :)

Probably yours has different cooling design, if it's not the same card model. Disassemble it and measure (it will be cheapest way to get know :) ), or buy 0.5; 1; 1.5mm pads, in worst case scenario you can stack one with each other. Arctic cooling is not very expensive ones, check for affiliate links in description and use them if you can/want to . An don't forget to subscribe thx :)
