It gives me the feeling of having been there in a dream, a kind of dejavu, the dream music only tangerine dream, the colors the setting, sublime Scott Glenn, one of the best scenes in cinema
This intro is just fantastic.
Ian Clark There should be a higher quality version available. But this will do fine in the mean-time.
The best
Blistering soundtrack and fantastic visuals
I just watched it again recently. And am ready to watch it again. I love this film!
That's what great art does to you.
Without a doubt the most atmospheric and intriguing horror film I've ever seen. Like no other movie, ever. It's been more than thirty years since I last saw it, but I can still recall scenes and images from the film. Just very... different...
I loved this movie as a kid.. Like you stated it was just something different... I watched it recently and although I still love it, I can see that the movie was butchered on the cutting room floor.. I wish the fabled 210 minute release was available... (I don't do reboots or remakes however in the right directorial hands, I think this would stand up well)..
The film should be seen as a modern classic 👏💎🎥🎬🎞️
@@teebzz Give it back to Michael Mann and do it up right.
Read the book... I also dream of seeing Mann's original 3 hour cut
Hello, Sophie. I love Michael Mann. He knows his music. He also directed the greatest bank heist sequence in the history of film; HEAT. Back to THE KEEP, when the soldiers realize it's not nickle but silver? Priceless. Kudos to The Dream.
The crackling of thunder followed by the hypnotic beat.... Never fails to takes me back to being a kid and renting this from my local "mobile video van". Still give's me goosebumps.. Outstanding.
The soundtrack is amazing.
Carpathian mountains are spooky like this, too. Mann nailed it.
Perchance, have you ever been in the Dinu Pass?
@@henrybrowne7248 No, just the Ukrainian side.
It was filmed in North Wales :)
A fantastic intro with an enigmatic soundtrack that promised so much but had so little to show for it...I've seen this intro several times, and it still gives me the shivers, but the rest of the film is horror, in the worst sense when related to the experience of a movie. The best is to just listen to the whole soundtrack and imagine what the film could have been.
I hope I get to see the 3+ hour version before I die.
Great atmosphere and cinematography! I first seen this film when I was 14 years old. Something about this picture made a significant impact on me. The story, acting, atmosphere, scenery, the intricacies and dynamics between character/personality types, the slow and forboding pace, and finally the surreal soundtrack by Tangerine Dream.
I can't believe how many commenters say that. Me too.
Atmospheric opening from a good enough and very weird supernatural horror movie!
Very Gr8 80's sci fi movie but it was underated..just like..THE HUNGER...I 1st saw this movie bac in 84. I was in 10th grade I TRULY LOVED THIS MOVIE💘👍😃😄😝
The "Sorcerer" too.
Very stylish and atmospheric. A perfect fit of sound and vision. Amazing camera work and of course the best fitting music by Tangerine Dream. I love it.
I saw this on TV on late night and I thought it was one of the most hallucinatory things I'd ever seen. And it isn't just the music, either.
That was my first viewing as well, though not the whole thing. Just the last third? or so. I really thought it was creative and effective and beautiful, but I didn't find out what it was. I thought it was some kind of European TV show 🤣
@@henrybrowne7248 The last third and the part where the soldiers steal the silver cross. Also, have it ever struck you this is an odd choice for Michael Mann, who normally does crime movies?
@@RamBam3000 I don't know enough about Mann. Coincidentally, I'm currently watching Heat . . If you mean where Lutz and his buddy release Molasar, and Lutz gets decapitated, no, I didn't see that. Dunno if I mentioned that I just finished the book and really liked it.
Great opening sequence.
It should be remade and done right.. Too bad these actors are now old because they were fantastic in their roles.
Alberta Watson passed back in 2015. Fine actress.
And keep the producers out of the product if they cannot envision.
and now… you are old...
Love the sound track
Totally underrated film! Atmospheric. Strangle. Chilling. And one COOL demon!!! Oh, and I have it on DVD! Cleaned up and improved. Very nice addition to my collection!
Das Her Kaleun! 3:10. My favourite bits in this scene are the rolling treads of the halftracks and the camera panning across Lake Llanberis showing the reflection of Snowdonia
Love this movie. I have it on vhs and dvd.
starring jurgen prochnow, gabriel bryne, ian mckellen and scott glenn
Mesmerizing...
Good movie
I totally agree with the second half of your comment. In the book Molasar is a powerfull vampiric-like sorcerer. It would have been very cool, yes, to show the Wehrmacht and SS troops in full-on combat against the ancient tyrant. It would have added just the right amount of punch to the final sequences.
Awesome Great Film!!!
Beautiful movie. I'm sure John Carpenter watched this and cast Prochnow for In the Mouth of Madness.
If I made a movie 🎬 I want Tangerine dream to the soundtrack.
On the top movies ever made ( Tangerine dream) version .TD
The BOOK, when it was written by F. Paul Wilson, was so far above anything published at that time that Michael Mann thought it should have an appropriate film for the non-reading World to see. This is why the original movie was so long. When the "studio" decided only so much movie could be seen, MM abandoned the entire project, and cast it into the fire of never land. Still the BOOK remains. If you want to know what is in this movie - READ THE BOOK! There are so many examples of this, over the history of mankind. READ THE BOOK!
Ric, I just finished the book. Earlier today indeed. I loved it, and I'm not even a big fan of fantasy.
@@henrybrowne7248 You should read MY book.
@@ricgaston6503 I'm game. What's the title?
When the hell is there going to be a kickstarter to get this thing released on DVD?! 😠😡🤬 I did read the first book of the series, it was great.
Same for bluray
if your still after the film, i got mine on ebay not long ago
A hatchet job was performed on this film. Trust me. If you read the book you will be sorely disappointed.
I'm wanting a blu-ray version of the fabled 210 minute cut.. Don't think it will ever happen. :(
@@teebzz I cannot believe it has never been released . . I have a feeling it will be, soon . .
A recent documentary was made on this fab movie... but for the life of me cannot find it anywhere!!
Excelente film lo vi una vez y quisiera volver a verlo. Locación impactante cuando vi el video Rosenrot de Rammstein recordé la presentación.
It sounds great ...
Brilliant!
For the love of God...why has this NEVER been released on DVD?????? One of the best movies and soundtracks ever made.
Mann owns it, and won't let it resurface.

@@RW4X4X3006 And he probably knows why. Saw it those days when it was released and it was bad because of budget reasons my guess. It had potential in those 'Alien days' but after the opening sequence it went downhill very quickly. Remarkable for its cast though!
@@RW4X4X3006 Oh, so that's the reason . . .
I'd like to see that! They should put out in DVD full length
The engine sounds enhance the musical score.
The actors were very fine...
+Jeff Smith Yes, they were, the cast was really solid, although I was not content with McKellen but I know his lines were dubbed over by somebody else, plus Michael Mann gave him a hard time, and when he was prepared with his Romanian accent then Mann changed his mind and wanted him to drop it...
Tangerine Dream was very busy with this & Risky Business back in 1983
I wish the director that made this film would make a sequel to part 2 are at least a prequel telling how it began how the keep when it was built the wars leading to it
Was built by the same beens who buit Tenochtitlan., by the time Aztecs got there that city was on ruins, abandoned thousands of years ago.
I think the best thing that Michael Mann could have done is to let the film rest for a decade or so. Then he could have decided to re-release the film in its entirety either as a two-part TV movie or try again for a theatrical release. Even then, he probably wouldn't have been able to release the 3.5 hour version. At most, 2.5 would be allowed. Afterwards, he could put together the Director's Cut for DVD release showing the full length of the film.
Just beautiful. Some movies are art. Another one, for example, is Suspiria 1977. I just completed Wilson's book. I'm not a big fiction fan, let alone fantasy, but it was one of the most thrilling novels I've ever read. Great concept. I like to ponder, how would I have done this?
I hear you chief. Sadly we'll never get to witness Michael Mann's original cut. In saying that though I still love this movie (and it's intro).. Takes me back to being 10 years old and renting this from my local "mobile video van". ✌
The original cut was 210 minutes. I wish they would release it all.
Should be remade with same passion
Prochnov and Byrne at their best !!!
I wish i could buy a dvd with this sound and picture quality. The one i bought from the States varies wildly although the interior scenes are good.

Definitely
+1 for Enki Bilal's creature : Molasar

Very riveting yes agree
Classic! 5 *****
If I had a nickel for all the Godwin-ing that appeared on VHS......
The most bizarre film I've ever seen, which led me to read the great book
Me too, after decades. I just finished the book today in fact.
This is Llanberis in Wales. Not Romania, I've been to the location where it was shot.
True, however they did try to portray accurately what these parts of Romania looked like at that time. They did indeed have a very rural medieval beauty
Awesome
Dragonslayer was partly shot there as well, as well as a number of Tennant Doctor Who episodes.
I read the book and saw the movie. Both were good. Why has the movie never been shown on TV ?
It was shown on late night TV back in the late 80's early 90's. At the time it was thought that if you could stay up that late ( midnight or 1 am start time ) you were old enough to watch it. Or you were a lost soul. Either way...the TV channels were still of the mind that it was still too risky for good society.
It's been shown on UK TV several times. Once on Sunday afternoon when a football match was rained off...
@@simonwren4729 AhAH, that's right. I saw it in, I believe, 1989, but not the whole thing. The last third? or so. And it was late as I recall.
This opening song was based on another song by David Byrne and Brian Eno called "Mea Culpa"
Really. Just listened to it and I'll be dammed if I can make the connection.
@@philmellor4885 Note the drums and rhythms, ignoring the words or other stuff. It's not a remake, just an inspirational connection.
The music from that scene is not in the official soundtrack...
Yeah, but even the uncut version with one of the most plastic looking monsters in the history of horror movies could not have saved this from being a flop,. There is a reason for why Mann so totally has disowned it, if he were keen on an uncut version it would have been released ages ago. Still, I love the intro.
Yes, his stated reason appears to be that it isn't the film he made. A very good reason to disown it, if he cares about his work.
This sounds almost identical to a song in Wallstreet (with charlie sheen). Pretty bad ass tune nonetheless!!
It's essentially a cover of "Mea Culpa" from My Life in the Bush of Ghosts.
Actual video starts at 1:55
so bad that my vhs tape is not so good wear the hell can i find this movie i like to keep them our download and than put them on a disc
Got the chance to see it on the big screen today. Already have a bootleg of it (shitty quality) and I was surprised how good the quality in the theatre was. The film is alright, but Ian's and Scott's acting are very bad imo. Another great problem with the movie is that it was butchered by the studio and it isn't even the movie anymore it was supposed to be, which is very unfortunate, because the movie had lots of potential and a great atmosphere. It all seems rushed and underdeveloped. I enjoy it and I hope they'll release the full version one day. Love the opening theme though.
Not sure if that's a lot of ghosts whispering or just VHS.
Just saw it yesterday and it was good. I can tell this was a studio interference movie but it was good nevertheless. Too bad we'll never see the true Michael Mann version.
Did this ever come out in a DVD?
1280 by 720 resolution free download available here twomovies.tv/full_movie/3/85780/1/movie/#confirmed its 900 mb download and quality is great, best I have ever found
It was an okay movie, but it really needs to be remade. This movie totally booted the character of Molasar. Book was scarier and a movie that was truer to the book would have been too.
Listen to a piece by Brian Eno called "America is Waiting" and I swear here you're listening to inspiration.
Nah...sorry, I couldn't make the connection.
Rhythm is allegedly inspired by Mea Culpa by Brian Eno and David Byrne. Just listened to it and the story seems plausible to me.
@@WilliamDye-willdye I did something similar at the time, I was recording at home and starting to experiment with looping.
Maybe someday I would be able to remake 'The Keep' movie if I become a Director and get the roles of, besides Captain Klaus Woermann, Sergeant Manfred Oster, Private Hans Lutz, and Private Otto Grunstadt, I would have the roles of Corporal Olof Eberhardt as in the novel the unknown Corporal whom started a fight with a Private in the novel actually the Private picked on the Unknown Corporal, this character will be credited Corporal Eberhardt, and the MG34 Gunner, Eberhardt will be a living member in the remake as he will be the best man to live, Rudy Shreck will be introduced from the novel, Private Franz Ghent, friend of Corporal Olof Eberhardt will be introduced and together they are best friends, but Eberhardt gets sad when Ghent is murdered and in stress some of the film but must move on from the death of his friend Ghent, Adolf Remer and Anton Wehner will be introduced from the novel, also Konrad Dresdner will be introduced and a young blond private whom is scared, however though he is a living member, also Curd Bauer a private whom Olof Eberhardt is involved with a fight with will however be Eberhardt's arch nemesis, but he apologises when he dies to Olof, so that as a few characters introduced are new as, Corporal Olof Eberhardt, the Corporal whom was in a brawl with Bauer whom however Bauer started a fight with Eberhardt, as told in the novel but as of the novel never named, and the rest of the characters, from the novel not seen in the film, Rudy Shreck, Franz Ghent, Adolf Remer, Anton Wehner, are to be introduced and the new character for the remake is Konrad Dresdner, so yes be nice to make a remake but need permission to do it first,
+Colby James Cool names. I have a German soldier wiki. If you can provide sources for those names (like Oster's first name of Manfred) I can add them. I'd also love to know the names of the Einsatzkommando members.
You seem to forget the realistic and dramatic interplay between Woerner and Kaufmann.
@@billhiers4171 Hans Flick and Friedrich Waltz. The two who were Rasalom/Molasar's first Einsatzkommando victims.
Well, Sergeant, what do you think of your new home?
Not very well Sir!
Much of the equipment is incorrect (based on type and camo), but I really don't care. Still a wonderful film for me.
The vehicles and Pak 38 are authentic enough, but being set in 1941 they should all be dark gray color.
It's pretty accurate for a mountain division re-equipped with new gear and sent to Romania before winter 1941.
Dark yellow was the standard camouflage at the factory, the red-brown and green patches are typical for a German front-line machine for much of WWII.
The SS men seen later are weird, it's as if they haven't received new gear since before 1936.
Though their vehicles (if SS-Polizei) should have been dark green.
Was it a real place or a movie set?
Good, fun movie. Should have been longer-- today it would be two hours or more, easy, and a more satisfying ending could be done.
[Spoiler]--
It is totally unfortunate that, after building up the existence of all the German troops and their equipment, they die in one 30-second, off-screen cataclysm at the hands of Molasar. A special-effects dukefest between hordes of German soldiers and ancient evil would have been much better.
- an alternative ending exists and is findable on youtube, no huge Nazi - vampire lord fight, but what happens to Glaeken and Ms. Cuza.
Personally, I like what happened in the novel, with the reanimated German corpses killing off their former comrades.
@@commandingjudgedredd1841 I know, I found that funny . . Especially Woerner finally squaring with Kaufmann.
I agree, if they have the right SFX, and I'm sure they do, that would be a cool scene.
The first ~15 minutes of the Keep is the only portion worth watching. The soundtrack is excellent from start to finish, however.
This intro is quite similar to opening of Aguirre the wrath of god. Germans=conquistadors, Carpathians=Andes, Tangerine Dream=Popol vuh. ...and mist
Actually Mann's cut was almost 3 hours long, Studio butchered the movie
Sendooh77...Then he should've thought twice about delivering a 3 hour cut...what did he expect the studio to do...hail him as the new David Lean.
They should have left this 3,5-hour cut. Sure it's long as fuck, and the movie wouldn't be that succesful (well, it wasn't anyway), but at least it would'be a movie.
USA army entering Afganistan ... not knowing it won't be that easy!
This scene and the music is the only good part of this movie
Great soundtrack. Very average movie.
A new world of female soldiers fighting whats?
this was terrible
