Really nice that you did this video for youtube too, us that cant help with the patreon still get your ideas on the episodes this way :)
I thought angel was pretending to be drunk to get to the vampires?
wait. ur probably so right.
he definitely was
Yup, he totally was. However it has been proven by Spike in Lovers' Walk that vampires Can get drunk, at least.
@@officialcassreactsI can state, per the script, it was an act.
@@officialcassreactsyeah, our Angel baby is 💯 pretending. It was apart of his undercover surveillance.❤
Thanks for doing this video! Even though the Angel episode reactions are a Patreon exclusive, I was hoping to hear your overall thoughts on the first season of Angel and really appreciate how thoughtful you were in putting this video together. I will be interested to hear your thoughts on the series moving forward.
so happy you liked it, thank you thank you thank you💜 appreciate you!
5 by 5 is my favorite episode of that season, good to see it in your top tier. Sarah acted her a** off in that last scene of I Will Remember You, so heartbreaking.
I’m glad you did this and that you enjoyed Angel. I always want to sit down new reactors and let them know to be patient with Angel as it tends to go for more slow burn stories than Buffy. Most of your favorite episodes are mine too.
It’s kind of the same thing ppl say about season 1 of Buffy. But it’s more appropriate to warn ppl to be patient with Angel because it’s 22 episodes instead of 12 to get through
I absolutely loved this recap and Episode ranking of Angel season one, please continue with this
In the final episode of the season, the demon did not go to the oracles for answers, he just went there to kill them. To cut off Angel's avenues to the PTB.
*_Quick! To the Angel-mobile!_* 🦇
I don't think it's necessarily a plot issue, I think the scourge could easily be defining themselves as "pure blood" when they aren't necessarily. Which works with the whole nazi metaphor, where they make up status of "purity" based on pseudoscience bs.
I figured the light just destroys beings who are closer to human. And Angel lives on human blood, and is a demon that the scourge defines as close to human.
Yeah, this was my take. Also, they even say that all vampires are considered "mongrels" by the Scourge, since they are literally born human and become changed later. So maybe by their, and the device's, standards vampires by default have human blood. I mean, we're told the first vampire was created when a demon "mixed" his blood with a human's (this is according to Giles' vampire origin story that he tells in the first or second episode of the series), which implies the vampire lineage is ALL human blood mixed with demon blood. And so, maybe the Scourge, and most other earth venturing demons, just have a higher percentage of demon blood than any average vampire.
@@fightscrimewhilesleeping4024 Just following up on these comments. It is explained by Anya in the Season 3 finale of Buffy that all the demons that currently walk the Earth are "tainted", so there are no actual PURE demons. This is the point of the Mayor's ritual, to make him a PURE demon. The Scourge just like to think of themselves as pure in comparison to vampires but none of them are, which fits with the Nazi Aryan metaphor. Its also quite possible that not all the demons on Earth are even aware of this tainted origin and believe themselves to be pure.
By this logic there would be some demons who would look at a demon like the mayor, after an ascension, becoming "pure" demon, as not being truly pure demon because they were once human. It's all how you look at it.
@@eolair Yeah, sorry, I figured people on this thread knew about Anya saying that at the end of season 3, so I didn't add that context. Thanks for clarifying for those who don't know 👍
The prodigal being in first place (at this point in the video) is sooo reaaal you get it
Fun fact, the character that eventually ended up being Doyle was originally conceived to be Whistler from the Buffy season 2 finale, Becoming. But the actor had a conflict and couldn’t commit to it. So they made a new character that would serve the same purpose.
I REALLY liked Whistle but I don’t think the dynamic would have been as good. Whistlers a bit cooler and more confident than Doyle. It might of taken away from Angels coolness.
I loved how dorky they made Angel in the show.
Would love to see you do more long form recap/essay style videos.
I don't think the Scourge were really full demons, they just like to believe they are, much like Nazis and the whole Aryan myth thing. The light from the device would have killed Angel because all vampires are part human at least physically even if they have no humanity and Angel probably is the most human of vampires since he has a soul.
The Five by Five episode was so magical for many reasons. They wanted to have it rain for the final confrontation between Angel and Faith but couldn't afford it but then it rained heavily anyway on the day they were shooting it which almost never happens in LA.
Ep 1. Not drunk, he is undercover to find vamps
Loved this!
Wolfram and Hart are basically just Team Rocket in season 1...
We haven't seen their full power yet.

Very much enjoyed this! It's good to hear what you thought of the show for those of us not in Patreon, and I know Angel wasn't your favorite in Buffy so it's nice to know you enjoyed season one so much! I absolutely adore the series and find it essential to getting the most of the Buffyverse.
Very happy you provided your thoughts on season one of Angel and that you felt that so much of it slayed. Will eventually look forward to your thoughts on season two.
Darla was the first vampire we ever saw in the first episode of Buffy. She lured a boy into the high school at night, and killed him. Later she came at Buffy guns blazing, and Angel ended up staking her. I bet she is not too happy with him. She also followed the Master for a loooong time, so she might go after Buffy for revenge for killing him and spoiling all that.
Or she might still be in love with Angelus, and want him back.
Damn! she has possibilities.
I really grateful you made this video for us (non-Patreon viewers). If you do find the time, maybe you could edit and upload just your Five by five reaction?
Really like the idea of these - and I'm totally down for watching them for other shows, even if it's for ones I haven't seen before. If I have seen them, then that's just a bonus. I am excited to see just how far you can take the category titles also 😂
Glad you're enjoying the show! Thank you for doing this on RUclips so I can get your general thoughts and feelings on Angel. Had to quit the Patreon b/c I'm not able to sync my own copy.
the scene with Faith and Angel in the alley with the rain is probably my favorite in the Buffyverse.
Loved this! So glad you enjoyed watching it. Angel the series is very close to my heart!
What ? You're wrong about episode 8. Angel doesn't make a deal with the Oracle at the beginning. It's only at the very end that he asks the Oracle to turn him back into a vampire and erase Buffy's memories. Throughout the episode, Angel genuinely believes that he has become human again.
This was a lot of info for Cass to keep straight, recapping 22 episodes. But yeah, that said, you are absolutely right. Angel doesn’t decide until almost the end of the ep , after talking to the Oracles a second time, that he cannot stay human.
She knows that. I watched the reaction and she knew that. She most likely just miss-wrote her script during this recap process. Which is understandable with 22 episodes.
Really happy you did this recap. I love hearing your thoughts on pretty much anything. I only watched up to episode 19 of Angel. I think I might have started episode 20 and got distracted and never continued. I only watched to see Faith honestly and felt weird only watching the two she appeared in so wanted to watch it along with Buffy but the show is pretty good. I think I mainly stopped watching because I finished Buffy season 4 and got so into Buffy season 5 that I abandoned the watching order lol. Maybe I should continue it or at least finish the first season.
I loved this! Nice recap but also a refresher to you and you actually liked a lot of episodes that the fandom would call 'meh' so Im excited to see the crazy adventure with season 2, 3 and then oh boy 4 and 5 is gonna be controversial and you'll have a lot to say. Oh one last note, I dont think Gunn is meant to be that young. He's probbaly 25, 26 I'd say by the time you meet him
Film nerds 'who already knew what Shanshu meant before the episode started because of the title referring to the film To Live and Die in LA' rise up.😅
My fan theory about the scourge demons is they are metaphors for storn troopers or other fascist thugs. They're weird demon views are like race science. Maybe the device works differently than they understand and they're just a different species who happens to be immune.
Hey Cass, this was fun to watch :)
The way I understand it, Doyle's demon dad went AWOL some time after Doyle was conceived. This left his human mother to raise him alone, making him believe that he was fully human.
Then age 21 hit, changing everything for him and Harriet.
Sarah michelle gellar in I will remember you was some of the best acting that has ever been done on the planet.
Angel wasn't drunk in episode 1. It was a fake out (for us and for the vampires he was hunting). He was just undercover.
I haven’t finished Angel yet so I don’t know if it gets wrapped up but I kinda figured that the prophecy of Angel turning human might’ve already been fulfilled in ‘I will remember you’ - kind of similar to Buffys prophecy in season 1 when she faced the Master but was reanimated.. Angels death would have been figuratively when he turned back into a vampire
It's my feeling that Angel's turn in season two of Buffy, where David was able to display his acting chops, could have sparked the idea for a possible spinoff.
This was great, thanks!
Angel is awesome great first season and lots of buffy crossovers too i like the faith crossover
Favorite episode from season 1 was Rm w/ a view and that scene where the old lady Ghost painted "Die" and Cordelia funny said it could be "Diet" and a little bit judge-y was my favorite scene
I did enjoy this type of video. Hope you enjoy Angel Season 2!
35:55 vampires are a product of demons mixed with humans
Great stuff Cass! Loved the review and your take on the first season. IMO, Angel is a show where every season is better than the previous one, so you are in for a fun and wild ride.
So to you season 4 is better than 3? Crazy 😶
Good job. Would watch more like this.
I was literally just thinking about this
so glad new people are watching this and buffy, they are all time classics that pretty much dictated what I looked for in fiction going forward. Buffy is the reason I still to this day just love a badass female protagonist complete with the flaws. lost count of the fictional crushes I've had since. All started with her
WOOOOOOOO
no angel episodes react on youtube?
Isn't a vampire a demon in a human body? And with Angel now having a soul, his humanity is restored. Therefore, I doubt that even he would've been immune to the light.
I agree with you, Angel wasn't my favorite Buffy character. I actually find him more boring than Riley.
There are a couple of Angel episodes that are rewatchable, but they are mostly crossover episodes.
I gave up after the first season.
Curious to see your reaction.
A long video gets the long comment I would have added in chunks to the episodes if I could do your Patreon.
The Angel theme song is by Darling Violetta. I first ever heard of the band when they played The Bronze in S3 ep Faith Hope Trick. I moved to Los Angeles the next morning. I met and quickly became very good friends with the guitarist between then and when they got chosen to create the theme song. The band is now solely singer Cami Elen and has been on hiatus since a show they did at a Buffy 10th PBP reunion at the El Rey. A video of them performing the them which slides right into their song "Star Shoes (Love Is Everything)" is on RUclips and worth a watch.
"City of..." That's the title. Angel was playing drunk. If you haven't seen Lost or Community, you won't recognize one of the bar vampires. I didn't because Lost came much later. I think I only met his stunt double. I got to be there for the entire fight in Russell's mansion in Malibu. I was usually just off camera with other crew or with other crew behind the camera. Russell falling out the building and possibky even the flames were a real stunt. He was lifted on a crane and dropped on a wire rig which inutially drops you at full speed before carefulky slowing to a stop a safe distance from the ground. It was the highest fall on a US TV show stunt. I think only a couple of movues had beaten it.
How Angel almost ended on filming day number 2: My third day on Angel was the second day of filming, and first dau on lication. We were filming the coffee shop scenes, which were actually in Manhattan Beach. Tracy Middendorf is gorgeous. So, we break for lunch. Most everyone has left for base camp. There are two groups of three waiting for the van. I am with RD Price, who was promoted from Greenwalt's assistant to Associate Producer to film second unit and get directing experience, and David Miller who had taken over doing the prosthetics. More on that later. The other three were Joss, Greenwalt, and David Boreanaz. They finally git tired of waiting and got in a cemrew cab pickup truck and git a ride back. The three of us get concerned. "Someone should follow them so nothing will happen." "It's a good thing that there no studio people here or insurance people." Standing up in the back of the pickup were two gast station style gas pumps, one diesel, one unleaded, to gas up any of the other vehicles if needed. It was only lunch, so both tanks should have been full. If someone rearended that truck, boom! Bye, bye Angel and both co-creators. Day 2 of filming.
Because Joss directed both season premieres, Angel was shot a few weeks ahead so he could focus on this and then prep for the other show. We were excited to have the extra time before the episodes would air to perfect the edits and get more scriots written. Except....
FOX and the WB refuse to greenlight episode two. David Fury wrote a very dark episode. "City Of..." had Tina die to set a dark tone and announce that Angel won't win them all. Ep 2 was darker. It was also set in a bar with Kate as an undercover cop. But she was a narcotics cop who is too far under and gets addicted to the cocaine she's trying to bust the distributor for. She was supposed to have a sobriety arc to parallel Angel's arc highlighted with a drleyed scene from Ep 1 of him sucking Tina's blood off his fingers and liking it. Instead Fury had to write this and the rest of the scripts had to be lighter as well.
Ep 3. David got in a minir car accident on the way to work. Out of caution and to relax his nerves, he took the day off. The scene where Spike is circling a chained up Angel was shot over two days. If you don't see David, James is walking around talking to nothing but the chain. His performance was that good that you couldn't tell the difference. Vampedotorturer was goid, but his voice was a little too high and nasally and not intimidating. You can tell that they lowered and thickened it in post.
Ep 4. Only two real notes. Joss loved the actor who played the doctor. He reappears in Firefly and is unrecognizable as D'Hoffryn, the demon who made Anya into a demon on Buffy. This was the first episode where the Angel started to hate the pit in the middke of the room where Angel acceeses the tunnels. It made filming in that room very difficult without risking a someone falling.
Ep 5. RM w/a VU, which is how you list an apartment or toom for rent with a view in the newspaper classifieds, as they charge for every letter used. Many of us were jealous of the set for her apartment. The sing reieating is "YouvOnly Hurt the Ones You Love" was cleared to use at the last.minutes and they had no time to send a master of it to post production. John King who cleared all the songs, and helped choose many of them, had an office in the corner of the big room my desk was in the middle of. What you hear is from a CD I had, but had to sell 12 years ago.
Ep 6. The only thing I remember is that when Doyle slams the poluce door shut and the binds open or fall off, that was an accident.
Ep 7. Tge Bachelor is Ken from the Buffy episode Anne. He is in a Firefly episode as well. An overly nice guy with a tendency to apologize during fight scenes. When Angke breaks through the restaurant door, the door frame cracks. That accident made the opening credits for possibly the entire series. This was filmed in a famous old Beverly Hills restaurant which had just recently closed permanently. I think it is now a Bristol Farms. The writer left the show after writing this episode. She also wrote Ep 17 Eternity, but actually wrote that first. That's why her scriot for that episode also included Doyle.
Ep 8. The second crossover. This episode resulted in a lot of angry letters and a ton of oeanut butter and chocolate being sent to us. It was hell. I love peanut butter and chocolate. (I finushed a bag of Recce's Pieces this very morning.) But, you don't eat food sent by angry fans. Especially unsealed food. So much goodness inmy reach, but inedible. The horror. The horror.
Ep. 9 The first guy killed, the First Mate, was played by former Buffy PA, and Glenn's stand-in Ashley Taylor. So technically, Doyle dies twice. We not only called the killing device a giant Christmas tree ornament, for the Angel onset Christmas party, a crane held it up as the star on top of the set tree. So it actually became one.
I nentioned to Tim Minear that Ifelt Wilram & Hart weren't being forceful enough and pitched him and alternate storyline. I slso didn't like the overt NAZI demons. Tim says, "That doesn't suck," and immediately had me putch it to Howard Gordon, the actual writer. I think I messed up my pitch. My pitch for the Doyke story line is that W&H learn that Doyle is half demon and is the only one of his kind on earth. They learn he trued a spell to remove the demon from himsekf, but removed his demon race from the earth. W&H finds an angry cousin on their new home and brings him back to kill Doyle. He finally confronts Doyle, who tells him what he did sbd why and apologizes. The cousin admits that their new world is a bit better, once they adapted to it. They don't need to hide who they are from anyone there. They part on good tetms. The W&H lawyer kills the cousin, framing Doyle. Niw, W&H is finally actively evil. So, yeah, none of that ever happened.
At the time, Joss and everyone saumid that it was akways yhe plan to kill Doyle. As a matter of fact, Doyke was originally supposed to be Whistler, but Joss had issues with the actor and created Doyle instead, hence some similarities. But Doyke was never intented to be killed off. I met Glenn a couple of times. I never got to know him, but the cast, especially David B, loved him. I witnessed two different Glenns. There was the Glenn that showed up on time and knew every word and acted his ass off. Then there was the Glenn who was chronically late and couldn't remember lines to save his life. Over 8 episides, Glenn 1 morphed into Glenn 2 with moments of Glenn 1 arriving which made it worse because you knew what could have been. Years later, after his death (3 years a d 3 days after this episode aired), a writer admitted that he was fired. He was given multiple chances to get clean. He didn't. He ODed Dec 3, 2002. Drugs have destroyed or killed too many people I have known.
Ep 10. I was dead set against adding Wesley. I thought his character was too silly for the show and that his chemistry with Cordy had already been established as a disaster. I have never been as happy to be proven wrong. Cordy kissing Weskey was soley to try to pass on "The Gift." I thought that was clear.
Ep 11. I was on set for the big Angel Penn fight, but again, may have only met the stunt guys. I had no idea who jeremy renner was at the time. Jeremy and Elizabeth Röhm would much later play husband and wife in the critically acclaimed movie, American Hustle.
My phone is freaking out. Will hit the rest in part 2.
I’m confused on last weeks schedule it said Lana del Rey unreleased part 2. But when I went on Patreon nothing was there?

cass!! i really want you to react to hozier’s work and music. he’s an amazing poet and songwriter and i think since you’re a lyrics girlie, you’d enjoy his lyrics and work!! please consider a hozier reaction !!
The oracles served the powers that be.
@34:11 In Buffy we learn that pure demons are bigger when Anya tells us they are, from her own experience with pure demons, from that one time she heard about a village being destroyed by one. I can't remember if she herself saw the demon or not. In any case it is one demon. The other demon that becomes pure demon is the Mayor, he also becomes pure demon through the process of ascension. Possibly it is only pure demons that achieve this purity through ascension that are always super big.
More importantly tho, in Angel we are taking a bunch of MakeDemonsGreatAgain fascists word as proof of their purity. Sure, their device rids the vicinity of humans and human adjacent life, but it is their device. Who knows what they programmed or magiced it to use as criteria for who to burn.
Thirdly, large is a relative concept. Maybe these are insect-demons, which would make them large for insects, but roughly basic sentient sized in comparison with humans or dolphins or martians or what-have-you.
👍
Angel is a demon in a dead human body. So yeah he is part human
I am also really frustrated only Angel remembers that time with Buffy.
How havent u reacted to any beyonce project yett gurl??
😮😮😮u need to try lemonade or renaissance or even the new cowboy carter !!!! Asap gurl they re amazing😂😂
Some thoughts:
I thought the premier would rank one spot higher.
Present viewers seem to like Kate somewhat more than people at the time did, but I’m a fan.
Love Denis.
There is a better Angel comedic episode. It’s a ways off, but you’ll know it when you see it. :)
Som (Tom) nam (sam) bu (pew) list.
I personally would put hero lower. I dislike the nazi-demons idea/trope on it’s face. It seem too formula to me. As for the continuity error, yes and maybe no? Yes, they can’t be pure demons in the Mayor sense of the word, but if they mean it in the Judge sense (in which case Angelus could but Angel couldn’t safely disarm the weapon) or just the DNA sense (which makes sense in nazi-demon logic) then maybe no.
Doyle callbacks are appreciated.
Agree with The Ring. Not my thing either, but I like how the bad guy dies in the end, and the last scene.
Agree with Eternity as well, for some reason it doesn’t get as much love as I think it should. And Angel and Rebecca had great chemistry.
Re. ranking Five by Five: you need a tier above slayed, let’s call it Chosen. I think overall I only have four Buffyverse “chosen” ranked episodes and this might be number two. It’s my favorite Angel, and the scene in the rain is by a whisker my favorite Whedon scene. Not sure about Firefly, the middle of that season was spectacular. If you were to put an Angel reaction on youtube, this is the one.
Overall I think I’d rank several of the episodes one tier lower, with Five by Five in it’s own tier above everything else. But fun vid, always interesting hearing your takes on things, especially where they don’t line up with mine. :)
Forever asking for a frank ocean blonde reaction
"Little" Tony? I thought it was Fat Tony
And BTW how many brains does Doyle have?
LOL i said “brains” bc i remember that’s how the demons said it in the show
I normally don't rank episodes, but I just didn't like episode 14, I've Got You Under My Skin. Exorcists are not for me. I know that you felt just the opposite, but this is one time where you and I differ.
I guess the same can be said about episode 16, The Ring. You didn't like it as much, whereas I enjoyed it, although mostly for it's comedic moments.
Parting gifts is at least Rewatch royalty
I think you're confusing your opinion with Cass's.
Hopefully that cold sore isn't too painful. A little Blistex will help. Just my luck, I started getting those right after my first makeout as a teen. A cheerleader from a rival school. She apparently had more experience than me. 😅
My three least favorite characters in Buffy were Ange, Cordelia, and Wesley, Obviously, I love a series featuring all three!
How did you become a brunette?
What do you mean 'how'? She dyed her hair... Obviously.
Angel season 1 is my favorite season of any tv show ever. Right next to Buffy 4 and That 70’s show 2
thats 2 crazy sentences right here
@@RoseJackson1607 nah come on that 70s show season 2 is perfect
Wow. My second least favorite seasons on both shows lol. Buffy season 1, and Angel season 4 are definitely worse though.
@@sophiaconnolly510 LMFAO I love Angel season 1 so much. Whats the reasoning behind not liking it?
1000th view!
Too bad that us none patreon members didn't get to see the reactions to those episodes. But it sure sounds like you had a blast watching the first season of Angel.
TBH, even though I love watching reactors I prefer the asides and wrap ups/reviews parts of videos.
I found Cass through her S1 Buffy round up video. Hence frustration when videos are delayed due to copyright because, knowing the show well, I'd be just as happy watching literally the reaction without the source or just an end review post reaction.
I like watching recaps, but I'm not a fan of episode ranking. Needless to say, I didn't watch the entire video.
episode rankings are just a bit of fun to me to be taken with a grain of salt🤷♀️💜
@officialcassreacts I'm glad that it was fun for you. I think some people take them too seriously.
By the way, I know that you changed it a little while ago, but I just wanted to say I like your new hair color.
As harsh as this will sound (and probably bad advice in regards to RUclips monetization), get rid of your movie and/or music reactions. Reacting to Buffy on this platform and then not showing the Angel reactions on RUclips as well kind of voids your whole Buffyverse reactors journey, imo. And I'm aware my opinion won't count for jack squat, so I'm not expecting anything come from this comment. Especially since it's a critique, and that simply causes most people to double down, and doubly so on RUclips where people will almost always side with the reactor over the viewers and commenters, even when a commenter has a valid and factual critique.
That being said, Buffy and Angel aren't truly separate shows. They are both the same show, imo, simply fleshing out the thing we call the Buffyverse (which is the true series as a whole), and simply giving a wider spectrum of how all these characters, on both series (I know I'm calling them two shows here, but simply for clarity), deal with the allegorical life lessons of said unique universe. Similar to the early MCU in structure, or Hercules and Xena back in the day, but with much better uniform cohesion and more clear intention from Whedon and the writers.
Honestly, I'm not expecting any changes, and you are your own person, and you are going to do what you feel is best for you and your channel, but it saddens me to not see your Angel reactions, as it prevents me from pretty much watching your Buffy reaction now. It is impossible for me to see the views of a person on one part of the Buffyverse and not truly get them for the other (and no, this attempted compromise of video does not cut it, at least for me individually). And it sucks not watching any of these reactions post season 3, or 4x1 to be exact, as I truly think you are one of the better reactors, and I enjoyed most of your viewpoints and how you expressed them on the early seasons.
Again I'm not expecting any changes, as you will do what works best for you, as we all almost universally do, and I'm certain if any fans reading reply to this it will be nothing but a brutal defense force and tearing into me for my "entitlement", but I felt I had to voice my feelings and disappointment, and I tried to do so as respectfully as possible. Still I hope your enjoy the rest of your journey into the Buffyverse, even if I can't bring myself to watch with only part of it shown. You truly had some good insights and funny moments in seasons 1-3, and I'm sure that will likely continue. Take care! 😊
I was just thinking about this. Music reactions get copyright claimed much more on RUclips than Angel does. All Angel reactors get almost no problems with copyright and demonetization for music reactions is almost at a100%. It would be better for her too. So doing Angel here and music on Patreon is much smarter imo
Good advice but also bad advice because if you look at her video views, she clearly gets THOUSANDS of more views for music and movie reviews than her Buffy reactions. So why would she stop the videos that bring her the most attention?
"5 by 5"is *LITERALLY* a 5 by 5 episode!🤩🤎My TOP 4"Angel"episodes are"5 by 5","I Will Remember You","Sanctuary"and"In the Dark".
