- In 2016 Texas Tech transfer quarterback Baker Mayfield returned to his original school. There he would face off against recording breaking quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The two would shatter conference records for all sorts of statistics. Mayfield ended the night going27-36 for 545 and seven touchdowns. Mahomes and the Red Raiders would fall short 66-59 even after going 52-88 for 734 passing yards, 819 total, and five touchdowns.

Funny story about this game. Both teams were involved in a minor bus accident on the way to the stadium. The busses that contained both teams defenses were unable to make it so they just used random people from the crowd to play defense.
thats cause its lubbock and lubbock drivers
@@johnpierce2095 hahaha got rear ended but a drunk driver last semester at tech
this actually made me laugh💀💀💀
Better defense than the chiefs this year
The stories describing how trash the Big 12 defense is gets more creative every single year.
So cool hearing nfl stars names being called.. Dede, Mixon, Mark Andrews, and of course the two star QBs
What about keke coutee?

@@RSHighlights i remember this game. But looking back at it and seeing a qb with over 800 total yards melts my brain
The difference between these two teams was Mixon. He absolutely dominated!
oklahama was stacked deedee westbrook mark andrews and other solid nfl players haha Mahomes just carried that texas tech offense the entire year. Also they had a great oline and decent defense
377 scrimmage yards 5 tds, absolutely scary
You're joking right ? It was the nonexistent Texas tech defense
No it wasn't it was the defense no one covered or cared to cover him. The Oklahoma defense was far better and Patrick mahomes had to make throws Mayfield only dreams of making just to compete with that team and the playmaking ability was far superior from mahomes. The difference in defense was one guy was playing catch in practice and the other was full on GameDay championship on the line.
@@wildbat9098 deedee Westbrook is garbage
This should be titled: "The Time Baker Mayfield, Joe Mixon, and Dede Westbrook Faced Off Against Patrick Mahomes".
That was the game that Mahomes proved he could pick up a team and carry them on his back. He actually came closer to beating O U than any other team
This is Legitimately One Of the Greatest On turf Performances I’ve ever seen in my life.
Reminds me of Chiefs Rams MNF. Crazy that Mahomes lost both to lesser QBs
@@botalley1595 He was on inferior teams both times
@@botalley1595 lol baker a lesser qb. That's a good one
except for the the two defenses...
@@jacobwilliams7918 Then most, no. Then Mahomes? Yes.
Was at this game. Highlights don’t do justice to how it felt watching a shootout of these proportions. In the 2nd half, Tech punted and then it was 10 straight TD drives to end the game.
A shootout between a 3-3 and 4-2 team. Shocker.
Spoiler alert!
From a non american, this game makes me see why you guys love this game. This was a shootout! Crazy fun to watch.
It's very exciting and you can score at any time. My GF is British and she watches american football with me and I always tell her that each play is like a slot machine. Every play could be that play where you score that triple seven haha!
When your d coordinator has 0 skills unlocked on NCAA 14
One thing I can’t help but notice about Mahomes here is he is so on target. Seems like every ball he throws is hitting his receiver in the chest. Mayfield obviously had an insane game as well but man, Mahomes makes it look effortless, and makes it easy for his receivers.
They are both elite qbs and no matter how much people want to hate on baker because of 1 bad year and his cockyness they still shouldn’t take away credit from his talent. Yes mahomes is the most talented qb of all time but baker is still only 1 step down from patty.
@@dixienourmas9678 try like 5 steps down
@@tr3yz_12 try looking at stats threwout there hole career. Mahomes step above baker is like a 50 foot step. Just like it’s a 50 foot step above any other qb. But baker is a top 7 qb and I have everything to prove it. Baker and Dan Marino are the only two qbs to have 75 passing tds, 11k passing yards, and 89 passer rating in there first three seasons. Baker has been better than josh Allen and you can’t even argue that. Yes josh Allen just had a better season but baker has been better other than that 1 season. Look at the stats. Baker also has remarkable accuracy on the run and is an amazing improviser and showed that against the jets when he had only practice squad wrs (due to covid) and 3 o-line out and still passed for 400 yards. Yes people will never give him the credit he deserves because they don’t like his attitude or because of his 1 bad season but you can’t take away from his true talent
@@dixienourmas9678 Josh allen has also had the same coach all 3 years baker is finally going into another year with the same coach for the first time... Lol freddy kitchens was horrible, hue sucked also... Not to mention it was the damn browns baker went to... Not the chiefs with Andy reid lol... Baker gonna light it up this year
@@AdamJoseph1352 yea baker has had a horrible chance to be great but he is. This is also the first time they will have the same scheme two years in a row
What a shootout this game was. Love seeing these highlights. Makes me miss college football.
Imagine thinking Mitch Turbisky would be better than Mahomes….
As a Bears fan it is the biggest tragedy in all of Bears history. And just think how much awfulness we've gone through....
@@mikeratkiewicz6720 I wanted the bears to pick Watson instead of Mahomes. I liked Mahomes a lot but Watson was more of a sure thing.
@@JJ-zr6fu Yep, as sure as a happy ending in a massage parlor!
Mahomes wouldn’t be as good with the bears as he is now.
@@JJ-zr6fu At the time I wanted Watson as well. How do you not take the guy that went to B2B championships and also beat Alabama?! In hindsight it doesn't seem as great but how do you not take a winner.
This just proves that Mahomes’ success in the NFL is not just because he has great receivers around him, because these Texas Tech receivers are no names mostly and Mahomes still made crazy off schedule plays and amazing throws. Its kinda hard to figure out why Andy Reid and Sean Payton were the only coaches who saw his potential.
Yeah but the thing is those made him look 5x worse, why you think he got slept on in the draft. With the number 1 offence around him he just makes the teams that passed on him wet
It's always easy looking back for sure. Scouts just said he did it against the Big12 Defenses. Every schools QB looks great 😆
@@kja6336 nigga he is the number 1 offense. Any team he would have been drafted to would have been the number 1 offense lmao

Top 5 O-line Texas Tech had that season and he was considered too reckless and i totally agree unless his WR is WIDE open (which is a result of good coaching not good qb)
So many college studs on the field and even some big NFL talent. Fun game to watch.
Best college offensive game ever
Mixon in this game and college in general was literally a 99 overall RTG player in NCAA 14 on freshman mode
Bruh fr keep makeing these, there amazing vidoes
Appreciate it! Another interesting one coming tomorrow
Big 12 football in a nutshell:
"Yeah we fired our offensive coordinator from last season. We were only averaging 50 points a game and frankly it's just not the direction we are trying to go as a program."
Lol we have Bailey Zappe’s college coach now as our offensive coordinator
At 2:04 the camera guy trips over nothing lmao
Still one of the best games I’ve seen. Love back and forth games
I remember watching this being so frustrated that Tech couldn't stop OU's offense, which always extended their lead right when Tech got within a touchdown. It's amazing to go back and hear names like Mark Andrews, who's having a Hall of Fame career. Probably Patrick too, wouldn't count any of the others out either. Beautiful game even though my team lost.
“Probably Patrick too” , arguably the best qb in the nfl
This was the first Oklahoma game I went to and wow it never gets old rewatching it. The crowd was crazy and seeing those records broken live, what an experience.
GUNS UP
This was the game where the chiefs saw the Patrick Mahomes we know now
where?
Boy howdy this was one game that was entertaining and had my blood pressure up!! LoL 😆😂 It's nice to see a handful or so of these young men still playing in the Pros..!!
I was at this game as a Tech student and I will remember it for the rest of my days
Mahomes was their entire offense passing and rushing. Damn
Draft experts still doubted Mahomes after this game. Shows how many of them get it wrong. If you can't tell Mahomes is the man after that you're blind.
Fr Mixon bailed out Mayfield time & time again.. Mahomes had no run game.. Dude is getting it done with his special talents alone..
@@vrum255 He's been scrambling and making plays from absolutely since he started. He's a future Hall of famer
Draft experts don't take into account will to win which is hard to judge but when you look back that's what determines a QB's success if they have the talent. Rosen and Trubisky both didn't have look how their teams did under them in weak conferences. Mahomes is the only thing that made Tech competitive.
Black qb get no respect
@@TheKxc That's why Kyler was #1, Lance #3, RG3 #2, Winston #1, Watson #12, Mahomes #10. I'm sure I'm missing some. Bottom line QB is very hard position to scout and the same reason a black QB gets passed a white one will as well.
ah yes the "whats defense?" bowl
If you wanna see no defense, go watch Saints vs 49ers 2019 matchup, not as many points but just as entertaining
Of course, Patrick Mahomes is a freak. The very best kinda freak. He's the only guy who does to the NFL
exactly what he did in college. This has to be my favorite shootout.
How bout tom brady
@@zymicue8261 you realize Tom Brady actually kinda sucked in college, which was why he fell down so far in the Draft
I remember staying up Saturday to watch this my senior year high school I believe this was 2016
As an OU fan, all we needed during Bakers, Kylers and Jalens tenure here was DEFENSE. It’s just unbelievable how amazing OUr offense was but acted like a middle school defense every year
This was by far the best football game I ever went to
That’s awesome
Man this game was truly one for the books!
Mahomes continues to shine
I watched him play through his whole Texas Tech days.
I knew he was something awesome then!
It’s a damn shame baker had literally one of the top 3 worst defenses out of all college football this year and the year after. That offense was fucking stacked and should’ve won the title.
Now this is real nonstop offensive high scoring football at it's best
And Baker was a demon this game too...shit still unreal
Baker always had a very solid work ethic and never failed to put up the numbers necessary to lead his men to victory.
The irony
Oklahoma stacked with Mixon, Mark Andrews, Dede Westbrook... All of them vs Mahomes and a bunch of his homeys, maybe Keke Coutee worth mentioning.
The first time they faces off was at Tech when Mahomes took his job and Mayfield had to transfer.
Watching this makes me think Cincy needs to get an oline for Mixon
Awesome 2 QB'S in Coolledge into NFL.
i love these nfl star college games
Good game for both teams between Oklahoma and Texas Tech!!!
People forget how unstoppable Mixon was.. One of the games best in NFL as well
Lmao Mixons not even top 15 bruh. Hell BOTH of Clevelands backs are ranked higher, and are statistically better... and they split carries.
I'm exhausted just watching the highlights.
Take a shot everytime a WR catches a wide open pass and I'll call an 🚑 for you
I’m starting to feel dizzy and it’s only halfway through
Brilliant
Someone on this chat wanted this! Nice!
Baker is going to have one of his best seasons
I don’t see why people believe he’s that guy. He had his chance when mahomes went out and he still didn’t deliver lol please fill me in.

As a OU lifer, I didn’t give one crap about winning this game. I felt we had lost by the number of points and yards they gave up alone lol. Had tech not turned the ball over they would have won
Maybe because techs defense was trash and Oklahoma could had still won it either way
I’m no expert but mahomes’ mechanics are visibly improved nowadays when compared to this. The difference is actually kind of crazy
The way Mahomes could throw dimes and be completely off balance shows why hes one of the best in the NFL today
Imagine if the qbs would of switched teams, it would have been a flood
Nah, tech fucked up and didn't give Mayfield a scholarship. Mayfield was 5-0 with tech before he got injured. If tech had, mahomes would've had little playing time

@@sirhoopalot1125 your reading comprehension is still weak. Mayfield was 5-0 before he got injured. Had he not and been successful, mahomes may have only played 1 year.
I never knew Joe Mixon and Mark Andrews played with Baker. One reason i like watching these older games
Good ole big 12. No defenses. They do produce some good offensive players though.
bro as an Oklahoma fan I got about 5 heart attacks watching this game. The defense would make a play to where it’s third and a Walmart parking lot, and this mahomes guy would throw a dot every time to get out of it.
Both defensive coordinators should have been fired after this lol
Still remember them battling it out, the firework's kept going off all evening
16:00
I think the entire game was a blown coverage
Were they playing Jig 2 at the start of the video?
Here’s something you don’t know, Baker Mayfield was at Texas Tech, and Mahomes, as a sophomore, started over him bc he was better. Baker got mad and transferred the next year instead of developing behind mahomes, and even Davis Webb left
Great game. It begs the same question I've had for years about college football though. Do they ever play defense?? Are college defenders allowed to hit people or disrupt catches?
Was at this game, never have seen such horrendous defense on both sides. And that's saying a lot coming from a Tech fan
Steven Seagal was seen walking around asking if “anybody seen the defense”in this game ?🤷🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤣
the difference between a future NFL MVP vs every other “regular” college fb player is horrific😭😭
also BEAUTIFUL catch 7:40
OU been good for a while.
I know why Baker isn’t as good in the NFL as he was in college, because he doesn’t have 20 seconds to throw
Mixon had one hell of a night that game. 🙏
Baker literally threw that ball from the 15 yd line to the 25 yd line @ 7:46 and looked like he just flicked his wrist.. He’s got one of the more underrated arms in the league... Crazy that people think he’s just a game manager or a bust.. like I didn’t even realize what I saw until I went damn Oklahoma just scored within two plays and skipped back to this throw
Fun fact mahomes is the first Big12 QB to ever win a superbowl
his team won it but you know
what mahomes can do flatfooted is absolutely mind blowing
The time Mayfield consistently played as well as Mahomes in the NFL…Crickets
You give Mahomes Westbrook or mixion..They win the game..The talent Baker had around him was the difference.
Mahomes just looks elite compared to mayfield. Look at how open mayfields passes are compared to mahomes
Dude your hating for no reason.. Mahomes might have played better but Bakers performance was certainly elite..
Am I the only bengals fan that completely forgot Mixon played with Baker Mayfield😅
Don’t forget mark Andrews
And Hollywood and Orlando and samaje perine.
Please please please tell me I’m not the only one who saw that no look pass at 710 ! And for at td 🔥
Yea I seen it
That throw by Mahomes at 1:14. Such a hard throw to make.
He made so many elite throws in this game he carried his team
Good throw but not the hardest one to make, especially given he could've led the receiver downfield not towards the sideline. But 9:40 and 13:47 are the two best throws in this game by Mahomes in my opinion
9:40 2nd & 25 that was beautiful
WOW
2nd & 10 at 13:47 too
The defense for both teams for both teams walked into a bar…and stayed there to watch the game.
Texas Tech was never known for its defense, they often had shoot outs with even average teams. OU had sub par defense during Mayfield time, it’s why they lost to top teams that had offense and defense.
Joe Mixon is just too good
15:13 when your defense just can't get a stop
Is this an offensive clinic or a defensive cautionary reel?
Joe Mixon looking like Reggie Bush
I'm trying to understand the thought process from the chicago bears staff that had Trubisky graded higher than Mahomes after watching film from this game.
They have to try and predict how good a player is going to be in the future, whereas we can just look at film in the past and compare that to how good they have been in the NFL. They have a very tough job and most of us couldn't replace them.
I was at this game. I had joked that it might be midnight before the game ended. We left the stadium at 11:30.
This kid might be something one day
Should rename this video "what defense?"
DeDe Westbrook was so cold
It's crazy how many of that OU offence is in the NFL now
Cool defense bro
Despite their loss, Patrick Mahomes was so freakin good in this game.
This wasn't Baker vs Mahomes, this was Baker and Joe Mixon vs Mahomes. What were Mixon's numbers?
