- Stanford took on Iowa in the 2016 Rose Bowl. From the very first play Christian McCaffrey dominated the Iowa defense. With two early touchdowns and an additional pick six by the defense this game was never close. McCaffrey ended the game with 368 all purpose yards, which is the Rose Bowl record. He had over 100 yards rushing and receiving. Averaging 9.6 yards a carry Stanford's offense was bale to defeat Iowa 45-16.

From an iowa fan, mad respect to Christian for kicking our asses. I remember us talking before the game saying stuff like "he hasn't played a real defense yet"... well when he did, he torched us. Hard to be upset about that, dude was straight up lethal in college. He got robbed of a heisman.

7 years later, and Christian McCaffrey (Stanford RB) and George Kittle (Iowa TE) are now superstar players on the 49ers trying to win a Super Bowl together. Probably something poetic about this.
Also, CJ Beathard (Iowa QB) and Solomon Thomas (Stanford DT) - as well as Kittle - were all drafted by the 49ers, so a lot of SF connections in this game.

Growing up in Iowa and being a fan of the Pac 12 I can remember how Iowa fans dismissed McCaffery leading up to this game saying he hasn't "played a real defense". He then proceeded to make the whole Iowa defense look like they were on ice skates all afternoon. lol

Where have I heard that before? I'm a 3rd generation USC alum. We heard the same talk from the Iowa folks in the build-up to the 2003 Orange Bowl. The result was 38-17. Although the score looks somewhat respectable, Iowa got its touchdowns from the opening kickoff and a late score in garbage time. If you watched the whole game you'd know it was a beat-down.
Iowa fans and players need a little humility.

Even as an SC fan I have to acknowledge it was disgusting how McCaffery didn’t win the Heisman especially considering the west coast bias and the huge impact he had on that Stanford team because you take Derrick Henry off Alabama they’re still playing for the National Championship but if you take McCaffery off Stanford they’re a 6-6 team at best

I miss these days. I’m from alabama but a huge Stanford fan because of Andrew luck and I actually flew out and seen mccaffery play in person and it’s unbelievable the talent he had.
I was at this game and it was like watching the Madden console game in real-life.

My brother and i are from iowa but we were in Korea at this time. We had to wake up at 3 am yet were ridiculously excited... iowa just never makes it to games like this. Christian Mc made sure we weren't excited very long lol. We both were passed out by halftime

Dude, Stanford just beat the shit out of Vanderbilt on the road a week after beating the shit out of USC on the road. We’ve got a budding superstar quarterback and excellent corps of receivers. In last year’s Covid shortened season they went 4-2. Young Stanford fans are spoiled rotten thinking that a Rose Bowl is a typical season

This is one of those games that will be looked at forever. An all-time performance. Just on another level.
CMC has always had a mean stiff arm! He will put a dude on his face in a second! As a Panthers fan I miss having him so damn bad, but I know he is finally getting to play at the level he deserves as a 49er. However I do often get a little choked up everytime I have to see him playing in their uniforms.
My 11 yr old son watched you for the 1st play at Stanford..heard everything that was said about your mother and father ..he wanted to see you carry the light for others and be strong and work hard and accomplish this amazing thing in sports..your first game in in NFL as a Carolina panther was his best and I say best game ever..#heknowsyougaveeverything

That first touchdown shows an underrated skill of a good receiver. He could’ve kept going across into that linebacker like the route was supposed to do, but he took it up the seam leading to a touchdown.

But it makes you wonder if Iowa would have done better, because they got slaughtered by a Stanford team that had two losses.

I remember when I was in la that week bc my mom wanted to go to the rose parade so we didn’t end up going to the game bc tickets were expensive and we had no interest in either team and I just remember watching this game at the hotel thinking this guy is gonna be a star. Now he’s on my second favorite team and he’s my favorite player in the league glad he turned out great

I remember this game for a very weird reason. Carly Fiorina was a Republican presidential candidate at the time, and she was a Stanford grad. She sent out a tweet that morning saying she hoped Iowa would win because Iowa Caucus. This proceeded to happen.

Me and my Dad were there, 5th row 40 yard line, in black and yellow, and could hear the huffing and puffing of CMC as he burned the secondary on the first play 80 yard PA. I remember screaming "GET HIM! GET HIM! They aren't going to get him.." as he split the safeties like some metaphor with corn involved. Was tough to watch that game.
Funny thing is, we are Bay Area native's, well I am at least, Dad is a Cedar Rapids hawk; and we are die hard 49er fans. It was a real peculiar feeling having all the hate and resentment of CMC dry up in an instant when he got traded to the Red and Gold. Was also surreal to hav e CJ Betheard and Kittle playing together at Levis as well, RIP to CJ's brother and my condolences, tragic.

@@only1adonis CMC had 2660 scrimmage yards on a much worse Stanford team, as opposed to a loaded bama team in which Henry had 2300 scrimmage yards. Mccaffery was so much more valuable to Stanford than Henry was to Alabama.
@@only1adonis No one is taking anything away from Henry (I still root for him today), and neither he nor McCaffery made the selection. But Alabama is talented top to bottom, and Stanford had McCaffery; truly the most valuable player on the team, and without him they were mediocre. And McCaffrey has proven his worth to a team as a pro IMHO more so than Henry.

As a 49ers fan 7:27 Cj Bethard getting sacked by Solomon Thomas made me a feel a little gitty lol. The following play was also impressive by Solly even tho it was a completion he did pretty good at recognizing the man getting open and getting close to knocking it away.

Looks like they were in Cover 3 - The Safety (#27) had middle but he was busy drooling over the 42oz Ribeye that Stanford was cooking. The CBs (#13 and #14) sat down to join him before they realized Stanford was overcharging for it AND putting 18% gratuity on the bill so they aborted the dinner and left #27 to pay the whole bill.

I've certainly looked at the career of this young man through the lens of the PTSD of this game and can honestly say that I'm glad he wasn't just some tosser on some random day having the game of his life against my favorite college team and after that season he went on into relative obscurity in the NFL. I'll never forget this game and how remarkable he really was and am glad that I can still find on any given week during pro season that he makes the highlight reels. He's damn impressive.

Some CMC trivia. Christian is the 2nd generation of McCaffrey's to play for the 49ers. His dad won a Super Bowl with the 9er's back in the 90's.

This was a painful game to watch, seeing one person take over a game like that when it's on your opponent's side sucks. Gald he's gone on to have a great career though, he's earned it.
