OUTSTANDING! I do indeed have such a folder on my desktop, and I absolutely HATE IT when s*** like this appears for no reason that's obvious to your average user. It makes me fear that something bad happened during the OS update. You have allayed my fears, and I'm very grateful! Not particularly user-friendly on Apple's part.
Gary, your channel is the only source for me to learn mac. Been a PC guy for over 30 years and when I first got my mac, which was only Aug 18, 2021, your videos have really helped me get acclimated to the OS world. Thanks.
I can’t believe this is something I have googled just a few hours ago! Moments before you posted this video!! Gary is always there when you need him. 😊 A lifesaver. Thanks so much.
Gary is so clear in explaining everything. I too have wondered about this and always left it in place fearing the worse if I deleted it. Thanks so much again.
I second that. This folder has been appearing and I have been throwing that in the trash but when Gary explains what the folder is, why it is there, etc...Puts my mind at ease. I just had another folder on my desktop and easily tossed that in the bin.
Only started noticing this myself since Big Sur updates. Off-topic, also recently noticed that MacOS 11 removed Time Machine system restores. I am beyond angry about this. They had a perfect system. Now no more full system rollbacks. If something catastrophic happens your only choice is to reinstall. -.-
Professor Gary - I was just wondering about this very issue! I have been deleting them, but was worried I might be eradicating important system files. I’m glad you posted this informative video.
So timely and helpful. I started getting this several months ago, I had been deleting them but always feared I was going to kill my MAC. Thanks so much.
thank you for this, i always have these files and never knew if i could delete them or not or what they even contained. very helpful and concise tutorial

Hey Gary, could you please make a video about how to manage music and playlists in Apple music? I've been a Windows user for 26 years and just bought my first Mac (mini M1) a couple of days ago and I'm really struggling how I can listen to my mp3 files, creating playlist, dragging multiple audio files into Apple Music etc. Thank you very much!
The issue I had since my update to Ventura was every time my Mac started it would tell me that one of the files in the "previously relocated 1/Applications" folder was damaged and unreadable. So I deleted that directory and we'll see if anything breaks.
I always wondered what that file was. I also see in my Downloads file there are things like audible books and they are all saved in another app like books, can I take them out of downloads or will that also remove them from the books app? It would be nice to reclaim 28 GBs of space. Thanks
If you have imported the file into your Books library, then you don't need the one in Downloads. Plus, with a site like Audible you can always download them again. I never even download my Audible books as file. I use the iPhone app and listen to them there. I remove the book from the app as soon as I am done as I only need the current book I'm listening to on the device. No need for older books since I can always download them again.
I have this and thought perhaps it would help me find where my files are. A bunch of files have seriously disappeared from their folders they were in. BUT when I do a spotlight search , I can find them * somewhere * in my computer- actually located in the iCloud version of the folder or something which is present in the file on my desktop. It’s really really bizarre and annoying and really quite scary as it’s as if I have also lost some files . What’s going on?
I backed up my MacBook to a USB external hard drive so as to update my OS from El Capitan to Big Sur using the time machine. I followed the process in where it asked me to erase all files, as I had already backed them up. Now that I am done and have Big Sur up and running, I reconnect the USB external hard drive but can't find where my backed-up files are so as to reinstall them in my Mac Book. I can only see the "Relocated Items" icons in the hard drive. Can any body help me ? Thank you
Could you please upload a video on this - I bought ExFAT formatted external HDD and copied the files from my Mac to this external HDD. Now the very same files are greyed out and could not use it (it was working earlier). Note: files from other partition are working just fine. The issue is with only the Mac partition
So you have two partitions? Are they both formatted ExFAT? Format the, APFS or Apple Extended+ to use them only for Mac. I guess if you have to use them on both platforms (cloud is better for sharing files today) then you'd use FAT or ExFAT.
Image folders with actual images in them? Where were they before? If they have images files you need, move them into your user folder, maybe under Pictures, so they won't be moved again during an update.

I have an iMac 2010 with 512gb harddrive with altogether 400gb of files on it . Now I want to buy a Mac mini M1 with 256gb harddrive and a extern 512 gab SSD. Is it possible with the immigration manager to get the files from the old to the new mac?
I would never go from a larger drive to a smaller. It has to be the number one problem people face -- getting too small of s drive. Go bigger, not smaller.

They don't create them. They were created by an app you are using, or a previous version of macOS. Installing the update simply moved them for you to inspect. I think it is a bug in the updater that is causing most of this as in cases like I'm showing here there was no reason to save the file.
If you delete Relocated Items without looking at them, you may lose valuable information. Since I don't arrange my folders according to Apple's conventions, after upgrading to macOS Montgomery, they stuck ALL of my files in Relocated Items. Not happy about it!
@@Baltimore1894 Things in the Home folder, say in a folder you created under that, definitely should not have been moved to the Relocated Items folder. Maybe it was another location, or maybe something else is going on?

Take a look inside and see what they are first. Make sure you don't need them. You usually get them when an app crashes or misbehaves.

I don't think so. That would probably require Boot Camp, but that is only on Intel Macs. I haven't (and probably won't) investigated this.
