I've used Mac OS for way more than 2 years and never knew what the heck a smart folder was other than an Apple option I never chose. Great video. Just loaded my Documents and Applications onto my Dock. Cheers!
I created a folder named Clipboard. I set my Mac to save my print screens to this folder so I can drag and drop in any app I want. You can set this folder to be shared via iCloud and people can sync documents directly on your dock. This is SUPER powerful.
It's literally impossible not to learn anything new from your videos. Every time. I knew about the folders in the dock, but that simple ⌘-click caught me off guard.
Great video..! As a brand new MAC user, It's almost overwhelming how much stuff there is to learn about this machine... But I've gotta say, YOUR videos make it doable. Now I just need to find the time to watch them all - hehe. I'm glad I found your site & subscribed! Keep up the great work..!
I have so many icons in my dock for apps that they are becoming microscopic. This is the answer! Thank you. I'll watch again to make sure I understand it all.
Genius!! This is super helpful for anyone looking for quicker access to documents and downloads right in your dock. It may be super simple for some, but for me it's like learning another language. And I'm getting better one video at a time. Thank you, Gary!
I remember the days of Applications, Documents and Movies being in the dock by default. Back in the Snow Leopard days before Launchpad was a thing. My first taste of MacOS.
hahahagahgagah I lost you at "the right side of the dock" but I listened and listened and listened to the end because of your boundless confidence that I will eventually get it.
Thank you for this video! I’m a new Mac user (recently switched from Windows PC). I’m still adjusting to the differences between the operating systems and trying my to find my new workflow. These tips will be super helpful! Just when I think I miss a feature that I relied on in Windows, I discover than Mac has an ever better way of giving me what I want!
Great video, thanks very much. Just in case anyone doesn't know, right clicking on Launchpad also lists all the applications similar to your example. Keep up the great videos. Thank you.
Okay I have been watching your videos since this whole COVID-19 thing kept us at home. THIS IS BY FAR THE COOLEST ORGANIZATION TOOL I'VE SEEN FROM YOUR CHANNEL!!!! Thank you so much! My desktop is clean!
I mean...wow, I love this channel. I run applications from spotlight search so i am not sure the applications folder provides more benefit than my method, but the folders tips are so useful for my research workflow. Thank you!
Excellent excellent video’s! I am truly enjoying how I can get the most out of my MacBook Pro. I subscribed today, you will be my tutor for many things in the future. Keep,it up. 👍🏾👍🏾
These techniques were introduced into mac os almost 10 or 12 years ago. I believe there were 3 folders, "Doc," "Downloads," and "Applications," at the right end of the dock when your mac booted the first time out of the box, or the first time you logged in after the OS reinstalled. This "clean install" look had lasted from OS 10.5 to 10.8 or 10.9, and then the "Downloads" and "Application" were removed along with the new OS X during the Cooke age since the LaunchPad is from where Apple wants people to find their apps and the "recent file" feature of the Finder to access their files.
Great video Gary. One thing I want to point out, instead of creating shortcuts to the 'Special Projects' folder, you could add 'tags' to the files and create a smartfolder showing only those tagged files.
This is exactly the way we used to use the Apple menu in System 7. Just add aliases of the Applications folder, the Extensions folder, all out most often used apps and documents. The Dock now already has all my favorite apps and I have my Downloads folder there and use it all the time. My Documents folder is also there and I have Recent Applications as a grid view. This is my primary launcher. If the app isn't in Recent Applications (I have it set to show the last fifty) that's when I go to LaunchPad. Often I'll open the Downloads folder (which shows as a stack) just to select the "More in Finder" arrow to bring up a window that I can change to look in Applications or Music or Movies or wherever. It's just so easy.
Great video (as always). I found a restriction with Smart folders in the dock. Smart folders return search results if I put the link in the Finder Sidebar but not if I put the Smart Folder in the dock. Reason: I'm doing search on a NAS Network Drive. OK from Finder (which has the connection to the NAS) but not the dock. Annoying.
Great info. I'm trying to make a smart folder of images that contains both TIFF and JPEG files. It seems it is one or the other but there must be a way to show both. Can you help?
You can also drag Apps, Files and Folders to the Toolbar on your windows, which put frequently used items right at your finger tips. I especially keep Pages, Numbers and Renamer in my Toolbar plus current Utilities and documents.
Thanks for helping me clean up my Dock. But regarding the "recent" folders, wouldn't it be easier, and cleaner to just use "Recents"? I noticed this is missing from your Finder Sidebar. Is there a reason not to use it?
With a Smart Folder you can customize "recents" as much as you want -- number of items, location, types of files, etc. Plus you can open documents from the Dock folders without needing to go to the Finder first, open a Finder window, and click on Recents.
Awesome video...thank you for sharing. Does anyone know at 7:39 how to do something similar on a PC? My Mac is all organized thanks to this video, but now I'd like to do the same on my work PC, as my work's desktop is FULL of shortcuts and would like to streamline it all into one easily accessible folder from the taskbar. Thanks!
You are the most informative instructor on youtube. No gimmicks. Straight to the point. I like that.
Genuis way of using SmartFolders. I've used macOS for over 2 years now and have never used SmartFolders.Great video! Thank you!

As I have said since OS7, there are at least three ways to do anything on your Mac.
Very useful, thanks.
excellent tips ! why would anyone give this vid a thumbs down? PC users?

The applications as a list can also be accessed by right clicking on the launcher icon?
Just shows how complex macOS really is, and there are various ways of implementing various methods for a individuals workflow.
Great info. I'm trying to make a smart folder of images that contains both TIFF and JPEG files. It seems it is one or the other but there must be a way to show both. Can you help?
Hold down the Option key to change the + button to ... and then you can add All/Any modifiers.
