How to Tie Your Shoes So They Don't Come Untied!

Instead of resorting to double or tripple knotting, this method is a simple variation on the way most of us learned how to tie our shoes. It also allows the shoe to be untied with a pull of the free end of the lace just like normal. It solves the problem parents and youth coaches have with shoes always coming untied. Thank you for posting this. I was taught to tie my shoes as a young child and it became a matter of "I have always done it this way." Your method is much better and I no longer worry about the laces coming undone. The laces look so much better too.

The reason your shoes were coming untied is because you are using the wrong cross-over for your finishing method. The result is a weak granny knot.
To tie a strong reef knot, just go back to your initial crossover step, and reverse it. Instead of putting the left lace over and around the right, put the right lace over and around the left. Finish with your loops (single) as usual, and you will have a reef knot.

I noticed the granny knot thing also. The second crossover has to be in the opposite direction so that you get a square knot. But I am sure that the combination of a square knot and passing the loop through an extra time will be the best of all possible worlds.

I tie my shoes using the reef knot and incorporated this method and they still come untied in about 6 hours. People overlook the laces. My shoes have the fully round and very stiff laces and are very smooth. There’s no friction and they don’t compress in the knot. Ultimately I had to change the shoe laces to the flat ones and the basic shoelace bow is all that I needed.

A lady saw my kid's shoe untie and showed me that knot about 10 years ago. My daughter plays soccer. Neither of us have ever had a lace come untied with this knot. And it pulls to undo and no need to double. Great knot.

The first knot is tied wrong. You should go the other way round the first loop. (see the "Terry Moore how to tie your shoes").Aside from that, this Sugeon's Shoelace Knot will definitely not come loose.

Well I think I did it right, hopefully it doesn't untie :) btw I'm 13 and I used to do the 1 second version, it worked but only temporarily. Becomes untied after running for 30 - 1 minute or walking.

This is /wrong/, and unnecessarily complex! Basically, you're tying a variant of a granny knot; what is far simpler is to tie what's basically a square knot! The first part, where you wrap the free ends and pull snug, for right-handed people goes right over left, then tuck, and pull snug. The second part, where you secure the bows, is left over right --- backwards, so to speak. Snug up, and be happy. See kitchencone, below.

I use this method, but I think laces hold better if the first and second knots are in the opposite directions. In the first pass, the right-hand lace wraps towards you, and on the second knot, wrap it twice around the loop going forward, away from you.

My great Aunt showed me how to tie shoelaces this way 40 years ago when my kids shoes were coming untied. A lot of time saved over the years and now my grand kids tie their shoes this way.
