  • What is the best diffusion for portraits and youtube studio videos? Most flattering lighting for the face hiding wrinkles and acne. Lantern vs softbox vs umbrella. Testing out the new Smallrig 450D vs my old Falconeyes RX 24TDX ii flexi led light vs the Colbor CL100 cob light. And how much does colour temperature matter? This SmallRig RC 450D COB LED Video Light is the best video light I've ever tested.

    The lantern did look just a tad smoother, but the umbrella looked fine for what you are doing in your studio. The softbox was not terrible and without comparison between the other two, no one would likely complain - after all, lighting that fits into tight spaces is better than no lighting at all.

    If you take the grid off of the soft box the light will be less direct and softer. It would be a closer comparison to the lantern. I agree that having the ability to adjust the warmth/coolness of the lantern would be nice. But, it is a very cool piece of lighting. You might even be able to get a nice tan over the winter for spring/summer. LOL! Have a great week!

    • @ArcanePath360
      @ArcanePath360 Год назад +5

      The grid removal doesn't make the light softer. Many people confuse this, and also think a diffuser does the same. This would only be true if it were bouncing off light surfaces that were very close by like a ceiling or wall that it's almost rubbing against. The grid is to stop the light spread at the sides so parts of the background aren't affected by it. It has no bearing on the subject in the middle of it.

    • @charliejg
      @charliejg Год назад

      @@ArcanePath360 Yeah, got ya... The grid focuses the light into a smaller area rather than allowing it to spread out more. But, wouldn't that also make it less harsh?

    • @aristotle_4532
      @aristotle_4532 Год назад +1

      Grids destroy shadow quality, and softbox shadows are pretty bad to begin with. A lensed light is the solution to efficient and controllabe spread and they work well with barndoors and projection.

    • @ArcanePath360
      @ArcanePath360 Год назад +4

      @@charliejg No. In effect it isn't focusing the light. The light that reaches the subject is the same. Think of it in terms of putting blinkers on a horse. The horse doesn't see any better dead ahead, it just blocks it's periphery vision. It's the same concept. The point of grids is to cut the peripheral light spill so it doesn't bounce around and is more controlled. It's useful if you have different coloured lights illuminating a background and you don't want it to interfere with that. That said, it all depends on the situation. In a small room with the light next to a white reflector of course removing the grid will make it softer.

    • @ArcanePath360
      @ArcanePath360 Год назад +3

      @@aristotle_4532 Nonsense. It isn't the grid that destroys "shadow quality" whatever that means. It's mis-use of a gridded soft box, or choosing one that's too small for the job. Typically when it's far away you effectively reduce the size of the light source, and thus create harsher shadows. Replacing it with a small light with barn doors on it will be even worse. It would be like a spot light. Also a soft box with a grid isn't meant for video use, at least not on it's own. You would need a fill light(s) unless you were going for dramatic effect and deliberately wanting light spill to be kept to a minimum for subject seperation. The biggest thing that affects shadows is the size of the light source/box.

    The lantern looks way better. You can play with your WB in camera to get that 5600k light to look more like a 3200k, or make your life a living hell and put a CTO gel in the latern. I gel my lights because I’m dumb as fuck and like to get things “right” on camera.

    Something that is important that wasn't talked about is spill. This video is obviously directed toward youtubers talking head videos, but if you're making films, you may want more control over your light. A lantern, as shown in the video, is going to spill over the whole room. The softbox is more directed. You may not want the whole room filled with light so a lantern just wouldn't work. Also, another reason the example of the lantern may look better on the face is the size of diffusion. If a larger softbox was used, the softening of the features would also be increased, so not really a fair comparison.

    A curved front increases spread angle and makes the light softer for its size, but in lighting you need all types of light. Narrow softboxes only soften in one axis which you can control, square ones are semi hard and a lot more powerful than curved diffusers, reflected light is very unique in its power and spread, and the key should generally be a hard light, especially in longer shots. If you have something truly beautiful in front of the lens, you want hard light to show its form.

    Lantern FTW. No contest. You can put a bare bulb (or smallish reflector) very close to the lantern and increase power to taste if you want to add a little hard light. I was taught to position the lantern either between the camera and subject for (single models or small groups) or in the middle of the room (when subjects are moving around) and always point it toward the ground. I never tried to point it at the subject like a soft box (mostly because of the size and weight of my lantern setup.)

    The Lantern looks clearly best here, but I think the light behind your softbox is just a bit shit :D Very scientific comparison, as alweays, I love it.

    Earlier I use to shoot foods and table top products using softboxes but I got awesome results by using a single lantern. Now 80% of my works are being done by using a single lantern.
