- I met JR in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. He has lived outside in the woods since February, which was when he was evicted from an apartment.
JR says living outside is not too bad right now. Of course, winter is fast approaching, and living conditions on the streets will change rapidly.
JR says something very important I want to make sure you hear. JR says he went inside for a short while and stopped drinking. It's nearly impossible to stay sober while experiencing homelessness. But when given the dignity of an apartment, you'll see people change for the better.
JR is our first story on Aboriginal homelessness. In Canada, the Aboriginal homeless population is disproportionate to any other homeless demographic. InvisiblePeople.tv will always empower homeless people to share their own stories, yet because this is such an important conversation, I will be covering this topic in more detail on hardlynormal.com. The first post: Starting the Conversation of Aboriginal Homelessness: Interview with Adrian Wolfleg • Starting the Conversat...
JR's first wish "stay alive"!

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RUclips, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.
He is talking but there is tremendous sadness in his eyes. If there are employers out there please give these people work. They will be grateful
Bless everyone helping him out!
what a sweet man
It is sad but true most can not aboard rent and all that goes with it alone. Its a hard thing.
OMG! his eyes are so sad, I just feel bad when I saw his eyes.
God bless this kind soul
i live near Kelowna and i can tell you all that even with two decent incomes, we are struggling.
Your channel is an important channel.
Prayers for him and all who struggle. I have been there. 🙏💗
how did you get back on your feet
I get the impression that JR is Native. The Canadian Government is suppose to help them with very low cost housing, tax breaks, etc. I hope he knows about those programs or he'll be on the streets for a long time :(
@PP Wieners he looked American at first then he said he drinks. Actually this comment gave it away. His skin color is redish, white people can look red, his eyes are a bit Asian looking.
Supposed to. But it doesn’t happen.
Believe me, all natives in Canada know of all the perks they get!!!
@@spider-bat-man8791 Do you know how ridiculous you sound? He drinks so he must be* American.. than you proceed to talk about skin color.. Grow up, kiddo. 🤦♂️
Stay alive, eat and be merry. This man knows the secret.
The BC government is to blame for letting investment push housing to ridiculous prices. Homeless is there in other provinces, but the the most people are in BC. Second homes sales should be banned in the province until house prices stabilize
To bad he doesn't stop drinking , until that happens nothing is going to change for him . I used to drink and nothing changed until I stopped drinking , 34 yrs ago
What a reckless replica... Do you know what it's like, to be homeless? Have you been there? Do you really think that the problem is alcohol?
He already said he stopped drinking for a year. Then he went off the wagon. I guess you didn't watch the video smh.
Childhood trauma and loss is ‘the gateway drug’ for drinking and drugs and smoking.
With an awesome accent like that this guy should never be homeless
It's Canadian 🙂
I agree redrock, unless one has walked in the world of addiction they don't have a clue what it's like. It's not a lifestyle choice, it chooses you.
Stopmdot, once in the world of addiction, and it sneaks up, it's a damn hard journey to come back out of it. The land of denial means not knowing, in addiction how can one know anything for certain? The brain plays tricks on you, trust me, I know firsts hand what this is like but thankfully, after a near death experience, I have 8 years sober.
Congrats on the sobriety. Its so true, unless you've been there its really hard to understand how it is. Very difficult to come back from.
Congratulations 1,000,000X's over! I have 2yrs clean myself
Hopefully your doing good and got a place.
This is democracy . freedom & human rights in the USA at its BEST !
Kelowna seems to be the the city in BC that has a big homeless population. When the Olympics were in Vancouver, the city bussed many to Kelowna. One way ticket.
Don't kid yourself, its everywhere.
My experience is so much different. We are so much warmer, and closer to "stuff", in Massachusetts. Today had a high of 27 degrees Fahrenheit, but it was closer to 23, when I saw a young couple, with looks on their faces, like people who have no permanent home. I saw them in several places within the square, each time I went out. The young man was staring intently at his smart phone, and the young woman was gazing straight ahead. I offered them hygiene things, which they accepted, in a bewildered manner. I walked away, but had to go back. I asked the young woman if she needed feminine hygiene products, and she said, "Yes," so I responded, "Okay, let's go into CVS." We exchanged names, and Julia and I spoke. She is homeless, because, "My mother stopped loving me." "Cripes, that's tough," she seemed to be comfortable that I seem to understand more than the average person. While we were in the correct aisle, we kind of meandered up and down, chatting intently. I asked what she wanted, and she told me that they supply all that stuff at the Shelter on Albany Street. I realized that she just wanted a shoulder. She is mentally impaired, and is waiting for Mass Health to kick in. Julia needs more help than she is getting. She lives in the shelter with her boyfriend, his mother, and his sister. They get split up at night, by gender and age. She can't sleep with her boyfriend's mother, only his sister. Julia asked if she will see me again, because the shelter is 1/2 mile from my work place. I assured her that she shall see me, again. She almost smiled, but she still looked apprehensive. I shall be overjoyed if she ever lets me hug her. Merry Daze, be Your Own Jesus.
rachel: THANK YOU for this simple act of human compassion. i am very sure that the fact that you were compelled to reach out to julia as a human being, as an equal; someone who MATTERED and was worth conversing with and listening to... truly CHANGED her whole perspective and the amount of hope she had left not only that day but going forward. I have always since childhood been greatly affected by knowing that there are people who are homeless. that there are people who don't have enough to eat. it would keep me awake at night and it still does... but a lot more so now that in 2011, I travelled across to the other side of the country to Calgary Alberta( i live on the east coast of canada). There, due to some traumatic and totally unexpected circumstances... I myself ended up being on these streets with these homeless people. i can truly and wholeheartedly tell you that each and EVERY one of those individuals treated me with respect, kindness, generosity and an unreal amount of willingness to PROTECT me as i was totally brand new to the "street life" as well as bewildered by my surroundings of a huge city (i am from a tiny place that doesnt even begin to compare in terms of population or size). every one of them left a MAJOR mark on me and really did change who i am as a person in their own way. amazingly i was able to find a relative of one of them 4 years later by a total fluke with an online search and be able to check up on them that way but i sure do wish so badly that i could see the rest of them again. every time its snowing and cold here, or raining my mind instantly goes to all the people who have to be outside in it, wondering are they ok? are they going to survive this tonight? BLESS YOU for what you did. i am intrigued by miss julia's story, and i do hope that you were able to continue contact with her. i hope that the situation was able to improve for her and her family. when i read that she told you that her mother had "stopped loving her"... omg. how heartbreaking is that?!! if you have any updates i would love to follow up, i have twitter and my handle is wyldechylde00 i would love to hear from you! kind regards from canada! :)
I’m guessing this fellow is probably no longer with us. Kelowna, British Columbia has a harsh environment to live outside.
"What do you do when the weather gets bad?" "Oh, we go indoors." haha
Cool Dude Daddy since its coming from a homeless man yeah
Cause his accent? That’s how majority of how the native Canadians talk.
wow i amazed by some of the commenting ignorance. *shakes head*
I feel for him
I wish I was JR right now. At least he has a woman and family offering to help him.
The landlord needs a valid reason to evict him. Did he not pay rent? Did he destroy the place? Did he violate the terms of the rental agreement?
I hope he finds the help he needs to get a new start off the streets, so homeless just give up not knowing about any help they could have.
Well one thing is that it appears he is not a druggie, thank goodness.
I do understand it’s hard out here and rent prices are
Ridiculous
He did not say anything about the reason for the eviction, I will suppose causing hindrance to neighbours due to drinking could had been the reason. Not sure just guessing.
He seems nice
Your tone is callus while you are interviewing this man.
@stopmdot you've never experienced addiction
I think he's pissed ....
amazing interview , if the devil could only choose one drug , no doubt alcohol
Does anyone know how he's doing now?
He was paying rent and they evicted him? These landlords some of them just wrong

there is a noose in the background of the video. Is someone about to hang themselves, eh?
why is that funny
JoJo ! take a like
No one is about to hang themselves uh. Why do you assume that eh?? You need to stay alive, eat and be merry, uh! Words to live by baby!
@@therightsupremacist5638 Can confirm there is a noose. he may have attempted suicide and failed who knows.

Aww ..
What did he say at the end? “You’re a ‘what?’ buddy?”
He said picking, what does that means?

Kelowna is a dive
a dive? what you mean its a city you can't dive in no city
I live in Kelowna and the housing costs are stupid fucking expensive. Even in families with 2 working people its a struggle to pay rent.
$1800 a month is cheap here now...Fuck Trudeau and taking in refugees and making sure they are set up before making sure Canadians are taking care of first.
Alcohol is expensive, so are drugs, you can improve your life by improving yourself. Give Jesus a Chance or Satan will win.
Why’s he end so much with uh
comments welcome solartram@mail.com

Whats up with this guy he says ( heee ) at the end of every thing is he Canadian ?

RIP..... Guy hung himself after this video!...………………...Eh?
Isn’t that supposed to be the Indian way to be outside and live off the land the why they call them selfs walking cloud and sitting bull and so on
Ken turpin the best answer to idiots it's by silence
I’m pretty sure your right there
"It's nearly impossible to stay sober while experiencing homelessness."
seriously?.. I don't know but I have really hard time understanding heavy drinkers or having any pity for them. Probably its because of my experience but its them messing up, and doing it willingly.
your lack of experience probably
Not true, once addicted you are not willingly doing it. Your body mentally and physically needs the substance to survive. Alcohol withdrawal can kill you without medical assistance. Even with medical help it is really difficult and depending on the person and length of addiction life threatening.
