Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer... Simon meets with Amy, one of the tens of thousands of homeless people living in L.A. Unlike others, Amy has chosen a particularly precarious place to settle: inside a train bridge.
Simon Reeve continues his journey through the Americas. In this second leg, Simon is in the United States travelling down the Rocky Mountains from Montana to Colorado. In the wide-open prairies of Montana, the cowboy way of life is under threat from a long-term decline in the rural economy, but Simon meets a former Silicon Valley executive who has envisaged a new future for the land. The hugely ambitious American Prairie Reserve is attempting to turn three million acres of former ranches, farms and public lands into a protected habitat for America’s wildlife, reintroducing iconic species long extinct, including the North American bison. It is a move being welcomed by native American groups still living under the shadow of historical injustice.

That's exactly how I feel about my last job. I work and I thought the money was okay, but then I realize that it was because I was living with my parents and didn't have to pay rent. Then I realize if I paid rent, I'd be left with just enough to eat and just enough to survive my next paycheck, rinse and repeat but going nowhere and I'd keep doing it until I retire. That thought alone made me really ponder my whole life. Just because you're alive doesn't mean you're really living.

I went to every shelter and HUMBLY asked for help. I got my HIV under control. I stopped using meth. Then I said to the universe that I’m outta ideas. The very next day, a couple of beds opened up at a temporary shelter. We went from shelter to shelter. We hoteled a bit. Then, finally, we got a spot at a transitional housing. We were considered a family unit, so we were placed with families. That, in itself, was eye-opening. A whole family would be in trouble. Parent. Children. Grandparents. We even had a few Iranian refugees.

I worked for five years with a nurse who was exceptional. It wasn't until I was about to leave that job that he felt comfortable telling me that he lived in his van. That was before van life was popular. He had a great diet; he paid a friend who was a nutritionist to make him meals from scratch and freeze them...he kept them a week at a time in a cooler.
He has any anytime fitness membership and worked out an hour a day and used the shower there before work. I know he had friends in the area as well who welcomed him into their homes freely so if he wanted to go use their microwave or just hang out and watch TV he probably could have. I still don't really think of him as homeless. But he was the first person to make me see the homeless population as people and not a group.

I disagree with her. Americans in general have empathy. It is only a very small percentage of people who are psychopath/sociopaths. In the country, we give people extra food or leftovers, or just donate canned food. The primary disagreement is that welfare should come from government. Right now, the "Federal Reserve" (which is privately owned), "loans" money to the government by creating it out of thin air, invests it in smart and talented people, and then passes the debt to the general public through INFLATION. Taxes go to shareholders of stock of the central banks (the rich) as a payment towards the principle of the "loan". It's not really a "loan" though, because they create the money. They never risked anything and they didn't have to first earn the money before having it. This is called the fractional reserve banking system. The primary disagreement between "liberals" and "conservatives" (completely useless labels, really) is that liberals believe that giving the entire general public ever increasing amounts of negative money in the future for cash and prizes now is the correct thing to do, while conservatives believe charity should be done voluntarily through community efforts rather than at government gunpoint. We already have socialism, and the biggest lie about socialism is that it is for the poor. It isn't, it is designed to perpetuate the wealth of the rich (dividends, tax breaks, weaponized legislation, interest) and the poverty of the poor (inflation, overdraft fees, taxes). It's socialism for the rich, capitalism for the poor. Teach a man to fish.. but see, the current fishermen (investors) don't want competitors, so they sell you socialism so that they can get quantitative easing handouts from the fed and tax you to support their business, and use government death squads to destroy their business competitors.

Its not about something that Americans understand. Its something that our politicians cant seem to understand. They think that taxing MANY, MANY things on the working people to death is the solution to all poverty. They dont realize that by doing so creates future poverty and increases further when the average working joe cant even pay for his own basic living expenses anymore and have to pay for someone else (usually an illegal immigrant or some who has already been abusing on welfare). So the resulting logic is, why try to struggle and live like that when the government can support me? And creates even MORE poverty and homelessness. Remove the taxes and regulations and see what happens. People will have meaning to work again and to actually live instead of just surviving.

Yeah I straight up went and lived in the woods in a tree fort I built because I grew tired of feeling like a slave. Went to HSU at the same time. Crazzzzzy experience. Northern California, 110 inches of rain that winter... unreal. Tested the hell outta my mental metal.

Paul N. M. She is actually smarter than I am but she lives under a bridge. Difference is I got out there and worked my ass off for the last 15 years to make something of myself. Long nights, sleeping on friends couches getting yelled at and humiliated, barely graduated high school. Her situation is one she created for herself. I wish her the best but when she said I won’t work just to stay alive I thought well you just have to suffer then. Maybe she is happier living that way. It’s her choice, her life. Like I said I wish her the best but feeling sorry for her won’t change anything.

@@CouchMan88 Do you think your lack of education could contribute to your inability to comprehend how, if the circumstances were different, you could have made the same choices and ended up homeless?
I'm just pulling your leg, but what if you had the same exact life, but happened to be born Type 1 Diabetic? Did you have hundreds of extra dollars available for medicine the whole time and still choose to sleep on your friends couches, or would you not have been able to afford it?
I'm also genuinely curious-- are you under the impression that literally everyone has the good fortune of having friends who would take them in? Thankfully you got help along the way, but it's sad to see how little understanding you have for someone who may not have been as blessed as you were.

MC Grindah Her own quote : “It’s not worth it to work just to be able to be alive.” Some people are in a physical position where there are unable to work. Some people aren’t mentally competent to be able to work. This woman seems to be intelligent and able bodied. She just doesn’t want to work or live a normal lifestyle. She said it herself when the interviewer asked her about an apartment. She made her choice. Some people are in a worse position than her and make more for themselves. So no I don’t see how I could make the same choices to live under a bridge. It’s not in my nature. I understand disabilities that limit people’s abilities but that doesn’t seem to apply to her situation.

"the David Attenborough of people" wow 😲.
I once lived in a railway gatehouse. My bed was three metres from the train tracks, trains passed at full speed, about eight per night.
After the first week you don't really wake up, just a semi conscious kinda sensation.
Bless that lady, I hope she still healthy.

@@Mrbfgray nice way to twist words.
Modern working poor do more hours with less free time than a medieval peasant.
In temperate zone and in a healthier society, it does not take 8,10,12,14 hours of work, all year round, to cover your living requirements, because you keep 100% of what you produce without govt and parasite class such as landlords skimming off your labour . Even feudal Lords did not demand 50% effective tax.
If you live on the coast then food literally washes up on the beach with every tide.
The work required to "just live" is a fraction of what modern people work to "just live."
Leisure time spent with family, expanding or improving your living quarters (without having to pay someone for planning permission.)
Now every moment outside of "work" involves paying someone. You even have to pay to take a leak, a basic and essential biological function. Do it in a bush and you go to prison.
You call that social progress? Some people need to be told how to live, it seems. They leave their parents and immediately, anxiety, needs another authority figure for guidance. Church? No, mass media and govt.
Nightmare, Kali Yuga world of fallen men and women.
For those so deeply enmeshed in that matrix thinking, try starting point, Aesop's Fable: the dog and the wolf:
A Dog offered to help a Wolf get regular feed from his Master. The Wolf listened but saw a bald spot on Dog’s neck where the collar sat. Goodbye said Wolf.
