  • Martha's Vineyard is a popular summer destination for the famous and wealthy. I take the ferry to Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven which have some of the most beautiful homes in New England and we get to see them together here.
People come here for the privacy, the beaches, and the boating. Touring and dining also are popular attractions, according to Travel and Leisure.
I came because of recent news of Governor Ron DeSantis flying immigrants to the Vineyard and wondered if I see where they were. Come on in and see what I found.

Been going to the Vineyard since the mid sixties. If you want to plan a trip in the summer, book in January or February. Accommodations go fast! A car? Same. January or February. The Gingerbread cottages are so interesting. Large African American presence on the Island. August is our month with a lot to do. Many entertainment events are held at the Tabernacle. Juneteenth is a great weekend to be there. Inkwell Beach, the integrated beach. So much history on the Island. Definitely my happy place.

@@pagen5219 Well, id consider African Americans regular Americans. And just like other subcultures in the country, Jewish, Italian, Southerners, Natives, Filipino, Indian, and others, African Americans often have various commonalities and shared experiences that connect us as a group. There is no intention to exclude anyone or be secluded from anyone. It's just interesting when we discover our particular culture has a presence somewhere as cool as Martha's Vineyard.

From the uninvited Irishman : Wow you missed a lot man? What I mean is; nobody told you about those beautiful magical gingerbread cottages . Those buildings were once (temporary summer tents) back in the 1870s or so. The tents were set up on wooden platforms for the summer, and taken down for storage in the late fall. They were primarily if not exclusively occupied by wealthy black families of Massachusetts, and surrounding areas, mostly from Boston. They were (Methodists). They attended services at the tabernacle, and perhaps other nearby churches. They left the heat, and bustle of Boston area to vacation with fellow Methodists primarily. No doubt there was great peace and joy being together with other successful black friends. I don't mean that in a snobbish way just pure neighborly family joy so rare in America, in those days .There are incredible stories about these families worth reading about. These were amazingly intelligent, tough successful people at a time when racism was rampant even for the upper classes. Fortunately in places like Marthas Vineyard that sickening disgusting attitude barely exists today among the population. Certainly it's very exclusive today, very expensive. Not much we can do about that I guess? Thankfully they haven't privatized it all to keep us riffraff out. Talking about myself there. It would be nice if every American could know the glorious peace of summer in the Vineyard. I love travel like you, but one really should do jut a little research so they don't miss incredible stories like this. I'm deeply proud I was born in Massachusetts, and grew up there till 17 when I joined the Air Force. Been all over the world since then 1972. There are very few metaphorically sacred places on earth as precious, and peaceful as Marthas Vineyard. Believe me ;they're are a million incredible stories of that beautiful island. Thanks for sharing the walks with us.

Wow, thanks so much for all that information. I definitely did not know all of that. You're right, It would have been better for me to research and know all of that before I went and to share it with my viewers. That history is barely known outside of New England. In the media we often hear about celebrities visiting and how expensive it can be to live there. I showed up on a whim out of curiosity and decided to do a little exploring and recording. I'm grateful that you share all of that cool and interesting info for me and other subscribers to read and know! Thanks for dropping in!

We are kindred spirits you and I. Traveling is really like a (drug ) for me. When I'm traveling it's like reading a cosmic picture book. To think we exist on this ball of rock in the cosmos of nearly endless space is beyond our comprehension. Traveling reminds me we don't need to launch a rocket to go into space we are already there man. I wish I could afford a house near the harbor, or the beach at (the Vineyard)? I would have invited you in to have coffee, tea, a doobie, or some gummy bears. Just to shoot the shit with you and other passers by. Maybe Obama will invite us down for the summer? Maybe David Letterman will share a room in his $26,000,000 dollar mansion. Probably not huh? Such a joy to see you sitting in someone else's rocking chair saying welcome to Marthas Vineyard. Have a great time on your travels. Peace and joy to you from the unsolicited Irishman. Maybe I'll run into you some day to share some stories. Thanks

Harlem Renaissance writer, Worthy West had a home in Oak Bluff. Many of us found solitude here in the 60s. I took Mom back last October. She shared that time with her granddaughters and me! Do not be fooled by the politeness of the community in Martha's Vineyard. They are thinking what are you doing there just walking carelessly as a black in their safe community. That is the mistake blacks ofen make. Those people do not want you their so why do you make it a mission to always try to assimilate where you're not wanted or belong. White flight is real.

    Wonderful video!
I love traveling and I really enjoyed the pace of this video and how you captured Martha’s Vineyard. The houses are so cute & unique, they remind me of little gingerbread houses.
I would choose the berry pink colored house @10:22min; I’d keep it as is or change it to various shades of Salmon pink, w/pops of eggshell white, & brass hardware.
Oak Bluffs & MV are on my list of places to visit.

Since when Martha's Vineyard is for the rich? Back in the early 1970's my parents every year would pack up all six of us kids and go to Martha's Vineyard for a week and my family was far from being rich. I loved it, it's beautiful and we stayed in a house down the block from the beach. I was around 14 or 15, I remember taking the ferry over to get on the island, the merry-go-round, the making of the colorful designing candles in front of us, they also made the first Jaws movie on the beach there, it was a lot of fun and so much to do. I do miss it, I haven't been back in so many years. Back then my family wasn't rich and we did live very comfortable. If it's only for the rich now, than i'm glad I was able to see and enjoy it back then.

Thanks for sharing. The explanation for the title is because of my ignorance of Martha's Vineyard before I showed up on a whim to explore. My impression, along with many of us who had never been, was that celebrities and well known public figures frequented the island because they are all you hear about in the media if you aren't acquainted with it. Also, the title is a bit sensationalist to attract viewers. I truly appreciate you sharing your experience so that I and my viewers understand that the island has been a vacation spot for many of all incomes and cultures for a long time. Thanks again!

Martha's Vineyard can be affordable. Like anywhere else, there are peak times and it can be a little expensive (but so is Disney). Go with your extended family, get an AirBnB; leave your car parked in the town where you catch the ferry (it's really expensive to take your car over on the ferry). Off-season is best. One year, we walked from the ferry to our hotel in Vineyard Haven. There's public transportation (buses) that can take you around the island and it's cheap or you can catch an Uber. People are friendly, it's full of culture (historical African American towns like Oak Bluffs). Obama has a home there and so did Jackie O (can see from a distance). Beaches are great and lots of good food and shopping. One of my absolute favorite places to visit.
