First of all, this is a GREAT tutorial. Very detailed and helpful for people who are not that skilled. But even with this helpful video I came across problems. My screws kept stripping, these things were obviously made not to be taken apart. I also didn't have a suction cup so I had to make due. I just bought a pack of drift protectors, a backplate, 2 joycon shells and a front plate from you. Took me 2 hours to do the back plate and the 2 joycons, they look absolutely gorgeous! I watched the videos on those before buying and somehow thought the front plate would be manageable. I should have also watched the video of the front plate before buying... I gave up right after I removed the silver plate, which took me almost an hour to make the slot of SD card working again. Too much hassle right now to return the front plate, but will buy again from you :)
I just finished doing this. But now only one of my joycons work at a time. Not sure what I missed I went step by step in this video :/ unless something got damaged in the process. Any idea?
hi there, so i had ur same problem too, i opened it back up and i checked to make sure both ribbon cables were all the way pushed in, the right one wasnt for me, and now it works
I know this is a bit old, but as an IT worker who deals with laptops all the time, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY asap so you don't short anything out, you don't know how many motherboards have been killed at my job by new people not doing this
should've read the comment before doing it, and now mine is broken. im trying to turning it on but the screen is just kinda blinking and the logo never show up. any tips?
@@cahyoagung4461 so from the sound of it the motherboard may not be fried yet. Usually if that happens, you'll see no signs of life from the motherboard when you push buttons. The best thing I can advise is to take it apart again and unplug/plug in some of the cables again and mayb go pick up some thermal paste to use with the heatsink bc it could just be overheating on startup. Hope this helps 🙏
Great tutorial overall - I just finished my installation using this exact same shell. However, I just noticed that the eXtremeRate front shell doesn't come with the mesh filters that protect the openings to the front speakers (these are the two small openings on the bottom corners of the screen). So now there are two holes exposing the inside of my switch with nothing to prevent dust or other contaminants from entering it :/
This is why doing your research is important. They don’t typically come with those. You can either peel the ones off of your old one, and place them on the new one, or preferably just order new fresh ones.
reshelling joycons is pretty easy and their not as fragile as i initially thought. i did one of my joycons following the tutorial closely (and even screwing wrong screws in place and botching the shell) and then i could do the other joycon just from memory and instinct despite it having slightly different componenets. the second one even turned out better than the first. i think i might give the switch a go too.
I get to do this this coming weekend and I'm so stoked!!! Thank you for all the lovely info and tutorials, my Switch (and someday soon my GBA) looks phenomenal and will only get better! Hope you guys think about possibly doing shells for the Steam Deck, would be really cool to have all my handhelds matching!!
Saw the video, had to do it. My Switch looks really cool now. Had a small scare, but it just turned out to be a loose flex ribbon, got the back plate, and Joycon shells to complete the look. (Atomic purple). Thanks a lot!
Just didn mine in green with both kits to re live my gameboy color nostalgia. Love this product. The plastic seems a bit sturdier than the original switch release
Just ordered a replacement and im super nervous about this one. Ive moded my joy con shells and the back shell with no issues but something about the digitizer scares me 😬
It is not easy. I swapped the frame on one of my switches. And everything works as it should. Take your time and don't give up. It feels and looks very fantastic. Tomorrow I do my other switch. Cross the fingers ;)
[!!!] To everyone stripping their screws on the JoyCon rails: The screws are NOT regular Philips screws, they are actually "JIS 000" screws, they both look very similar, but are different! Philips screwdrivers are known to damage JIS screws.
Thanks for the tutorial, I managed to change my girlfriend's switch shell without any hang-ups. As someone else already said: do NOT try this if you're not acquainted with this stuff. There are sensitive parts such as thermal paste on the CPU and heatsink which you should not touch nor remove. Most importantly, you seriously risk to break your Switch display/touch screen if you use too much force. If you wanna do these kind of mods, ask some professional, or just buy a cool external shell! 😁 Oh and btw, the battery should be disconnected as soon as possible.
I was able to get it done without completely dismantling the device by reinserting the center screw loosely into the side rail that you took out to remove back console then removed the rest although I’m not sure they all have to come out to remove the front shell. Then I just disconnected the screen and digitizer and backlight then was just very cautious with heat mindful of the delicate electronics under while removing the screen. It does seem a bit harder to get all the cables through their proper channels the way I did it opposed to the video, but I think I probably spent less time fussing with that than it would’ve taken for me to fully disassemble and reassemble the console.
1. How hot is your blow gun? what temperature did you set? 2. is there any other way without blow gun? 3. and do you know what adhesive tape is similiar to the one used? just incase needs replacing .. many thanks.
1. we use the lowest temp, the essential is to heat it up evenly; 2. You can use the screen separator (but it's expensive) 3. Just use a regular 3M double side tape.
Yea um ALWAYS DISCONNECT BATTERY FIRST. And use plastic tipped "tweezers" metal can damage and/or short electrical components. And for the heat sink felt tape use a plastic pry tool and it comes up, no need to rip it o into pieces taking it off. 6/10 for the video on top of everything pointed out
I just finished doing this replacement faceplate mod twice now because I didn't know to move the speaker covers and light sensor plastic piece in the front face housing. Lmao! Shockingly smooth experience for me. Having to remove the screen twice was annoying but i had a heat gun and just took my time to heat it up and use the pry tool. I would rate this about 7 on a scale 1 to 10 of difficulty. As long as you have a iFixit kit and are patient, should be smooth sailing. Very happy with the clear blue faceplate to match the rest of my switch now. 😎
It's so hard to do ! Your video is really good ! (Adding chapter would be a big plus) I tried to change the back and front. For the back it was very easy in fact and I should have stayed to that, but I tried the front and... semi fail. The console work, the SD card works, but the screentouch doesn't work (I can see the image) and the card player isn't recognized when I insert a game (The part you have to clip is so hard, the one showed at 42:48) I won't say I don't care about the screentouch, but almost. I'll try to fix it myself one day, for the card reader, else I would bring it to a repair service. As someone else said, it's really something we should handle with extreme care, and it's better if someone skilled can do that (I'm not skilled at all, even if I'm not soooo bad, that's why it wasn't a complete fail) Update : Everything works now for me. The issue was certainly that part at 42:48 which is hard to insert. Once the game cardige system has been recognized everything was okay and even touchscreen works ! The only issue is I didn't glue the screen very well but It's still okay
did the swap on purple joycon shells, had a lot of fun doing it and it looks amazing. Was thinking of doing the back shell for switch console, but then would lose switch logo. So may do this instead.
Thanks for the help, although I wish you mentioned the use of a heat gun at the beginning. Since I had already taken it apart I just gently pried it off and it worked out but yeah probably wouldn't have gone that far if I knew I needed that heat gun lol

Looks cool as hell but I don’t have the confidence for this..I changed my own dock faceplate and switch backplate but this is basically a full dismantle, and there is no promise that double sided tape will hold as well or not get damaged. If I can find someone else creditable at this I’ll pay them to do it lol..also should thermal paste have been added to the heat tube?
It's wise to stay away from this mod if you have not enough confidence, it's pretty hard lol. If the thermal paste is still looks good and haven't get dry, then you don't need the new ones.

Just did it and it turned on just fine, but then gave me a game card slot error and shut off unexpectedly, and I was able to restart it after I removed a game from the card slot, but it continually shuts off after about 1 minute after pressing the power button, pretty consistent timing. What went wrong, and can it be fixed? I now do not have a functioning console. I’d greatly appreciate some kind of suggestion to look for what parts to check when I have to go back and build it again. PS: please update the title of this video to reflect the more recent upload being a more accurate teardown and rebuild (making this one obsolete), as I did not figure out about the speaker covers until after I already was 98% finished rebuilding and do not have the time to go back in and fix it for a while. You actually don’t need to completely disassemble the switch the way you did. The old frame can be removed by just removing the screen, disconnecting the ribbon cable for the lcd and digitiser, and removing the screws.
do you have a video example on that? I want to replace my front shell because it cracked, but this video scares me although I already replaced the remote shells...
I just took a look at your store and am tempted to buy this as I've replaced the back plate, dock cover, and a few joy cons with your products, but I have two questions: 1. Is the finish of the atomic purple shell matte or glossy? The video makes it seem like it's matte and I'd love that as I avoid clear shells simply because they have a glossy finish to them. 2. Will you be making a light gray option? I have the SNES back plate from your guys on my Switch, as well as the SNES joy con shells and would love to complete the look with a matching front cover. Yeah mine were stripped on two screws you will need a screwdriver that can hold very small drill bits and a cobalt steel drill bit one thats a little smaller than the screw put the drill bit in the middle of the stripped screw and you apply pressure while drilling until the heads of the screws pop off releasing the rail i didnt bother taking the rest of the screw out cuhz you dont need to as long as there are three screws one in the middle for the back plate and two on each end you should be good if one of those are stripped you can get away with not having a screw on either of the ends if the rest are in and it wont feel lose or anything.

lol Honestly the screen is very difficult to replace and that's why the front shell mod is the most difficult part of the whole Switch project. It's not hard to take everything off or on, but you may ruin the screen easily when you taking it off (but in your case it's not a problem lol). And also you have to take good care of all the connectors on the mainboard, they are not strong. So think twice before you leap, bunny lol

Got as far as removing the rear metal shielding. Thought, "how much deeper does this go?" Watched the rest of the video and said "NOPE!" and put the Switch back together. I bought this thinking "how hard can it be?", and then took too long to start this project. So now can't return the front plate. People should definitely watch this video before buying. The level of tedium might be too much for most.
The very first thing that should have been done after removing the large heat shield was disconnecting the battery. Never work on electronics with current still flowing through the circuitry if you don't want to risk damaging the electronics. Also, please replace the thermal paste when you put everything back. Your video is misleading people who do not know any better into thinking that it is normal to re-use the old thermal paste -- this is absolutely incorrect.
Where is the matching Purple Backplate? Why does he reuse the backplate? My kits include the faceplate, backplate, screws, and even serial number sticker.
The glass is fused to the digitizer. It is possible to replace but it's not very DIY friendly to beginners. They do make glass screen protectors that go over the border to color it though. I’m replacing my switch screen. Should I reuse the adhesive or should I re apply new adhesive. If so would regular 3m double sided tape work or do I need I special kind of double sided tape?

Once again thank you for all your help with the video and your advice, I thought I broke it and was ready to cry and just buy a new one.😆
@@mongjhi How much was the fee tho, the faceplate's staring me in the face and I kinda don't wanna mess with it
@sauce7690 I honestly wouldn't mess with it unless you know for sure that you can do it. My switch is still working fine but I ended up scratching the screen on the inside and it kind of bugs me. I can't see it when I'm playing so I'm just going to deal with it until I finally get the OLED model.
This was a while ago so I can't remember how much it was but I know for sure it wasn't a lot. Maybe $20? And the guys there were really nice so they ended up giving me a discount. I would call around first and see what their prices are.
10:40 that beat starts to slap! If you can sit still listening to this, you were robbed of a soul.
Although this mod is very cool and difficult to perform.
Only do this mod if you know what you’re doing and don’t risk doing this if you have Pokémon or Animal Crossing save data intact on your Switch (Because they can’t be backed up)
Didn't AC just make it so you can transfer islands?
That's true, the saving data may be the riskiest loss if you fail!

Now with a white backplate, pink joy controllers, gold&white buttons, and a new white front frame, my switch looks perfect for my eyes.

That's really scary lol. Thank you and congrats on the successful installation of the rest of the things!

@@cahyoagung4461 Sorry to know that. Is there any sound from the speaker?

Great tutorial overall - I just finished my installation using this exact same shell. However, I just noticed that the eXtremeRate front shell doesn't come with the mesh filters that protect the openings to the front speakers (these are the two small openings on the bottom corners of the screen). So now there are two holes exposing the inside of my switch with nothing to prevent dust or other contaminants from entering it :/
take out the ones from the old shell
This is why doing your research is important. They don’t typically come with those. You can either peel the ones off of your old one, and place them on the new one, or preferably just order new fresh ones.
I could never do this, let alone reshell my joycons, and but this looks cool af. I wish Nintendo did this officially.
reshelling joycons is pretty easy and their not as fragile as i initially thought. i did one of my joycons following the tutorial closely (and even screwing wrong screws in place and botching the shell) and then i could do the other joycon just from memory and instinct despite it having slightly different componenets. the second one even turned out better than the first. i think i might give the switch a go too.

Be mindful of the ribbon wires when removing your screen!! I just broke mine, so PLEASE, BE MINDFUL OF THE RIBBON WIRES. Happy swapping!
Saw the video, had to do it. My Switch looks really cool now. Had a small scare, but it just turned out to be a loose flex ribbon, got the back plate, and Joycon shells to complete the look. (Atomic purple). Thanks a lot!

Oh and btw, the battery should be disconnected as soon as possible.
After 14:48 disconnects the battery…
Please guys, first thing to do is disconnect the battery and then move on with the other stuff
All roads lead to Rome!
6/10 for the video on top of everything pointed out
5 of the screws in the joycon tracks (3 on one side 2 on the other) wouldn't unscrew, i could tighten them but not loosed them...
I`ll just be replacing the back cover then.
Do you think a hairdryer would be OK instead of a heat gun ??.
Sorry for the stupid mistake we made. Thanks for your comment and glad you like it! :D
It's so hard to do ! Your video is really good ! (Adding chapter would be a big plus)
I tried to change the back and front.
For the back it was very easy in fact and I should have stayed to that, but I tried the front and... semi fail. The console work, the SD card works, but the screentouch doesn't work (I can see the image) and the card player isn't recognized when I insert a game (The part you have to clip is so hard, the one showed at 42:48)
I won't say I don't care about the screentouch, but almost. I'll try to fix it myself one day, for the card reader, else I would bring it to a repair service.
As someone else said, it's really something we should handle with extreme care, and it's better if someone skilled can do that (I'm not skilled at all, even if I'm not soooo bad, that's why it wasn't a complete fail)
Update : Everything works now for me.

What went wrong, and can it be fixed? I now do not have a functioning console. You actually don’t need to completely disassemble the switch the way you did. The old frame can be removed by just removing the screen, disconnecting the ribbon cable for the lcd and digitiser, and removing the screws.

I just took a look at your store and am tempted to buy this as I've replaced the back plate, dock cover, and a few joy cons with your products, but I have two questions:

I bought this thinking "how hard can it be?", and then took too long to start this project. So now can't return the front plate.
People should definitely watch this video before buying. The level of tedium might be too much for most.
The beginning is pretty easy, if you continue to the screen part, I think it will drive you crazy lol

Yes you can

You guys should let us change the bezel-color of the switch screen. Ever thought about that? Is that possible?
The glass is fused to the digitizer. It is possible to replace but it's not very DIY friendly to beginners. They do make glass screen protectors that go over the border to color it though.
