Nice, you have that bright clanky tone down pretty good. I know he likes the rotosounds and I used to use them, but I think Chromes or Fender flats have a nice bright tone that sounds better in my opinion. Just my thoughts. Good job. I have a Tech 21 VT Bass 200 combo and it sounds great.
"STEVE HARRIS THE BEST OF HEAVY METAL BASS PLAYER"
🎸🤘🤘🤘👍👍👍😎😎😎
Wow. You can sure hear Steve's sound. Blows me away.
Enjoyed your vid. I love Steve's bass playing, especially on Somewhere in Time: very melodic and lyrical. I wish he would do a sit-down chat (bringing his bass) with Rick Beato. Could be a classic.
Love your playing, very on point
Thats what a Rock Bass should sound like,
It is a beast
Yess.....perfect tuning
Beautiful instrument and killer sound
Well done as always Oliver! I saw Steve's Tech (can't remember his name) in an interview state that those basses actually have maple bodies. Fender in the 70's would occasionally use maple bodies. When making his sig model, they couldn't get the sound exact with alder or ash. With maple they went! Is it a heavy instrument?
Thank you! Yeah Micheal Kenney said that in an interview with Tech 21. It is quite heavy, but I'm used to it now, as I play at least two-hour shows with my tribute band. It weighs about 5.2 kg (around 11.5 lbs)
Great sound and you look to have mastered Steve's right hand technique as well but added your their finger, very nice!
Compa', spacca di brutto!
Rockin'. That's totally Steve's tone.
Nice playing!
Hi Oliver - excellent job! Interesting note: last year Steve was using a GK Legacy 800 amp while the 4 Stroke was kept as a backup.
Hi, thanks! Yeah I've seen the pictures of the GK, but I was under the impression that it was the actual backup, but maybe I'm mistaken!
@@OliverTobyn Maybe the configuration was being switched around, on that particular show at least the GK was the main thing. I've always been under the impression that the GK tone is somewhat close to Steve's.
Fantastico come al solito! Arrivato a Fortunes of War mi sentivo Di Caprio che si vede in tv nel meme di Once upon a time in hollywood
Do you do any side work? I need a bass track for one of my originals. You have excellent skills my friend!
Hello Oliver i have two questions. Do you have changed the Fender Hi Mass because was not good enough? And the second one, is the neck of this bass stark enough to support the high tension of the SH77 Strings? I own the Sparkle blue Japanese and i want to have too the mexican one, but i have some doubts about the neck in this one.
Hi there, I switched to the Badass II bridge just to have it faithful to the original, but the Fender High Mass is just as good!
The neck is definitely strong enough to support them. Though the Japanese one is larger. I feel you can achieve a very low action on the MIJ bass compared to the Mexican one but it definitely withstands the tension of the strings
@@OliverTobyn Thank you very much for your prompt and kind response. Maybe the japanese one is more apt for the more demanding material of the 80s, and the mexican one for the newer songs lol!!
Hi I think it should be mentioned that Steve is using the tech 21 only with British lion, not with maiden. With maiden he is still using his Hi watt-clone preamp.
I recall Michael Kenney saying they were using it even with Iron Maiden, at least when he was still Steve's Bass tech
Subscribed! Your ripping that thing!
You're a "Beast" dude...
Right now its a tie for me between the Vintera and Steve Harris sig. Bass! Only thing i dont like about this bass is truss rod access point. Other than that. Perfect tone, look and feel. Very cool chops btw. I know for a fact how much practice and persistence this took.
Awesome good job Oliver, you nailed the sound & every Maiden riff, you have made a few videos featuring the Tech 21 Steve Harris SH1 Signature pre amp, ... is the SH1 you fave go to Tech 21 pre amp ? 😀👍
Haha thanks! The SH1 is a great SansAmp, but my to go one would probably be the VT Bass DI
@@OliverTobynoh Really, I have both Sansamps as well as a few others, Sansamp make great pre amp DI's
Well done with the rig! However, on the triplet technique, Steve is constantly lifting his Left hand from the frets to create a slightly muted effect during gallops. Most players don't pick up on this...
@@stevejohnsonofdeitiesanddu9766 I am aware, but as far as I know it depends on the part. Like, if it's a verse, yeah, that's true, or other parts like the beginning of Stranger in a Strange Land. Other times it does have some ring to it
Hi. Do you like more the Steve Harrris signature strings or the Rotosounds Flats 50 -110 ? Are the new SH 77 more smoother ? Thanks
I use both, to me they look and feel exactly the same, except for the blue silk ends of course
I have the exact same bass with the same strings. How do you have that bass set up? How do you have the action set up? I’m trying to get as close as I can.
I bought this pedal about month ago and love it. But I see you are plugging it straight into the input jack and it sound great. When i did this in my amp (ashdown mag 300) I have all eq but pedal sounds little "meh" but when I plugged it into the return input on effects loop (what is causing avoid all amp eq) sound is WOW. Did you tried plugged it into return input?
If you plug it in the return you're skipping the pramp, so you're effectively not using the amp's own tone (though there's some in the power amp as well) and that's what works best in my opinion. I generally prefer using the Return input, but the 4 Stroke doesn't have a Send/Return, so I'll use the amp's eq to fine tune the tone
Which bass do you like better, Mexican white or Japanese blue?
Is it true that you have to remove the neck of that bass to adjust the truss Rod?
Unfortunately, yes
I know Steve has flat wounds on his main bass live. I had the rare chance to play it at one of the shows. You want "fat clank" without "too bright clank"
I find it extremely difficult to play Iron Maiden songs on 100% speed!
I always put the speed lower.
Sometimes down to 85%
All you need is the 1/4” epoxy resin that Steve has between the pick up and strings
Hi Oliver, curious do you use the compression knob on the 4 stroke? I like it at 12 o’clock, it boost the harmonics
If I'm using it with the SH1, I'll just use it at 8-9 o'clock. It's very powerful and it might boost the harmonics too much. Don't think I've ever used it past 12
You have two wonderful analog things, why you would like to put a digital processor between them ? For many years I have been using only my guitar and part of my amp ! NO EQ ! Only add Hi boost / Low boost and with NEW strings my P bass sound great and warm with nice Punch ! Remember SH started and continues to this day with analog technique ! Simple way is the better way ...
Another question: do you know what bass he used on the first album?
The very same bass he has always used. His 1971 Precision Bass, which originally was white, then black, then blue sparkle, then white with the West Ham Logo
hi great vid and playing and steve tone im getting this bass next week is this bass good to gig with and is this bass good build thanks (:
Just played it last night at a gig. It is quite a heavy bass, but you get used to it eventually. I do recommend using a comfortable strap though! Nice, thick, and padded, like a Mono one for instance.
I really like the neck on the SH bass, it's definitely my favourite one on any Fender bass, and it's even comfortable when using super thick strings like his signature gauge.
Thank you for the info about the Bass cheers
Tunes?
Video by Patrick?
Sweet! When you upgraded to the Badass, did you need to shim the neck to adjust for the increased height of the bridge?
Actually no, I'd say it's about the same as the Fender Hi-Mass action-wise
@@OliverTobynwas there a noticeable improvement in tone? I've been skeptical just like when people upgrade a Floyd Rose tremelo with a brass block. Thanks for the vids!
@@theophany1770 I've made a couple of videos on bridges as well. Personally I find there's better tuning stability and better definition and highs, but apparently that tends to be quite subjective. Check the videos out and judge for yourself!
Please, what is the name of the song in 2:23?
Remember Tomorrow
"Remember tomorrow" 🤘🤘
Did you have to do a set up with his Rotosound sig strings some peeps say you got to take the neck off to set up to use the strings just asking thanks
Yeah, the bass has a vintage truss rod adjustment, which means you need to remove the neck every time unfortunately
@@OliverTobyn ok thank you keep rocking.
Two strings are red wrapped hence not quite SH77
The SH77 have two red wrapped strings, and two blue ones. It has been this way since 2017-2018. Before that they were blue on top and red on the bottom
Hi. Do you think that is possíble to recreate the sound of Harris with thinner strings or its better to use Harris heavy gauge to get his sound ? Thanks
The 45-105 version sound about the same in my opinion, just slightly "weaker"
What is the string height of your bass?. Thanks
The Rotosound SH77 flats are great, use nothing else.
amazing
can i ask if you connected the tech 21 at the front of the amp or at return of the amp?
Thanks! The amp doesn't have a send return, so the front
@@OliverTobyn hmm ok and it does work well coz as i know the preamp pedals sound good only at the return of the amp
Hi. The Bite switch of this pedal is based on what Boost pedal ? Thanks.
I don't think it's bases on any boost pedal. It's simply a boost of higher mids and treble, between 1 and 4kHz I do believe
What frequency do you change your strings to keep that tone?
I have about three sets and alternate them around every couple of months. It makes them sound as new for a couple of days every time I switch them. When they become too oxidised or worn I throw them away
@@OliverTobyn Interesting , I'll try this with rotosound rs77ld (same strings but smaller gage). I've the same setup as you. For my taste I prefer to remove the bite switch and use the orange compressor at 3 o'clock. It sounds more like the old albums. Did you try that?
Hell yea. Hows the weight of that bass?
About 5.2 kg (12-13 pounds). But honestly you just get used to it, after using it regularly I don't feel is that heavy anymore
Wow thats insane.
I see we are mixing the sh roto sound string set with the regular set for the silk colors. Those fuckers are stiff telephone cables ain't they?!
The SH set has alternating colours now, but yeah, the are definitely stiff
@@OliverTobynoh wow I didn't know they started doing that really cool! Tuning up that G with that set is wild ain't it? Feels like even a big ol' 57'ri C neck is going to fold in half.
i got my tech 21 and i have a cheap fender rumble 40. it doesnt sound even close when it comes to the tone. clank is very disorted etc. i dont know why mine sounds so dull
@@jedrusnowak3317 what else are you using? Bass, strings?
@@OliverTobyn fender precision Steve flats. Tech 21 low action. Cheap fender rumble Amp. Problem is that when i attack strings they Clank but the Clank is very boomy. Also guitar doesnt have a good tone
do u think that orange is essential? im willing to buy tech 21 but orange isa bit expensive
The tech 21 and the signature strings will probably get you 95% there. And if you're playing through the PA then that's fine. In smaller settings when using just the amp I find it gives you that final 5%, but it's not essential
@@OliverTobyn good. Tech 21 is Like half month pay im my country haha
Do you feel there's a big difference difference mic'd up vs DI?
Yes, DI has a clearer sound, better dynamics overall. With a mic kinda sounds more muffled, not bad, but a lot of bass and you do lose a lot of the high end, and this was with an SM57 mind you. Mixing the two seems like having the best of both
that SH P bass lol is one of the most heaviest weight bass i have ever held in my life seriously needs a hernia warning sign on it lol ⚠️
What’s your overall amp settings
When I play with the maiden tribute band I usually have the volume between 8-9 o clock, compressor at 8 o'clock. Parametric EQ is set to 100hz, 500hz, 1500hz and 4000hz. I usually just fine tune it a little. Maybe giving an extra bass boost, cut some low mods. I usually boost more the high mids and treble
no
What’s your amp settings on the orange
Like the eq
bass , mid , treble gain
@@charlesmitchell5829 yes, I just told you, a little bit more of bass if I need it. Cut lower mids, boost higher mids and a little extra top end
#87_passion_practice_perserverance_damn🇺🇸
😜super!
Too much Fretbuzz. It´s part of the Sound but not that much i think. Is he really using the Tech21 Pedal ? It´s just a modelling Pedal to have the Sound in a Box. He is playing directly into an Rig Amp with Preamp, Graphic EQ, Poweramp etc..
too hi mids...maybe it's also the mic placement too on the center.
