Steve Harris IS the reason why I first wanted to pick up the bass from the very beginning, and that's been 27 years ago now. He's always been one Hell of an inspiration to me, and A LOT of other bassists all over the world as well. He is a true musician indeed.
I believe Steve stated that he doesnt use 3 fingers to gallop and instead uses two fingers and just plays very fast. Either way he's an amazing bass player!!!
The Bass with the West Ham Crest is his main one. It used to be blue with a mirror pickguard (from around Piece Of Mind - No Prayer For the Dying, if I recall correctly), before that, it was Black (mirror pickguard), and before that again, it was white. It's his #1 bass, and for most of his career, it's been his #1 recording & Live bass-guitar. Even today, he's done an entire show on just that one bass guitar.
Great stuff Alfie and look forward to more from you! Another element in Steve's tone is the use of compression. He uses old DBX160 rack units which have a very distinctive attack and release. These are bloody expensive nowadays but you can get very close for sensible money using a DBX166XL set to Auto pulling the signal down 8 to 10dB. A few pedals do the DBX thing too such as the Maxon CP9. Keep up the great work and Up the Irons!
Thanks very much Paul! I hope you can subscribe for the next one! I found out more about the DBX after posting the video unfortunately but added it to the show notes. I bet the original 160 would be quite fun to play with!
Great rundown, especially on Steve’s techniques. How about doing a rundown on Les Claypool? I’ve never seen anything that does more than hint at what gear he uses other than the basses themselves.
Steve's tech, Micheal Kenny claims that the Trace Eliot is actually a backup. His main amp is an amp a friend made for him based on a Hiwatt solid state bass amp. He has used it since the 80's
DBX160 > Preamp: Electron - Custom made Hiwatt NCA 108 specs into C Audio SR 707 amps to 8 Marshall 4x12" Ev 12L loaded . He now uses Orange 4 Stroke amps, Orange 4x12 with the EV 12L speakers.
Steve Harris has state-of-the-art equipment as a bass player. But It is his very innovative techniques and his way to play bass guitar that make him a legendary bassist. His fingers move as fast as the speed of light on his instrument. Finally, he has his own sound on the bass guitar, which makes Steve Harris easily recognizable. A real legend on the bass. Steve Harris is again and always a true reference on the bass guitar.
Nice to get someone who can pull apart styles of bassists. I actually found out I'd been galloping more out of accident that purpose. But I know i can, I hope to get faster.
I look foward towards your videos.. Very very informative!! I've been a bass player for 31 yrs. And I'm surprised how many of my heros use the same equipment and strings that i use. Again always look forward to your videos.
Thank you Cruise, I always appreciate your comments. That's a long time to play bass and you're in good company if these musicians are using the same gear as you!
Afaik the first bass he bought was a '66 Precision Bass with slab body, he found in a pawn shop, which was originally exclusively produced for UK. Entwistle had several of these basses as well, of which only 25 in total were produced at all. No idea what happened to it.
I love Steve Harris' signature West Ham P Bass. Great review. I really like the simplicity of the Harris setup. He focuses on technique over extremely expensive boutique style basses and rigs. Nothing wrong with a personal preference but for me a p bass with Flatwounds is gold standard. There is no style of music that doesn't work perfectly for. Motown, Rock N Roll Heavy Metal (all subgenres included) jazz, funk, hip hop, country, pop and beyond.
Lado Guitars, a Canadian company, were very high-end and expensive at the time, and used models still fetch quite a pretty penny online. The entire band briefly used Lados amongst their regular live rigs from 83-85. Dave Murray had a Super Strat Lado and Adrian had a dark purple-ish burst pointy Lado with a Floyd that you can see him using on "Live After Death" DVD.
Hey! I'm glad you enjoyed yourself and learned something. That's great! I've never been complimented on my accent before so I do thank you for that and hope you'll join me in the next video to hear some more dulcet tones!

I could appreciate your accent because I'm not native ;)
He, that I don't know the answer to, as the question makes little sense in context for me. The SPB-4 had been around since at least 2014 when I bought mine, but the SPB-1 is a Vintage pick up, the SPB-2 is "hot output", the SPB-3 is the Quarter Pounder.
Before he got his signature SPB-4 he used to use the SPB-3 Quarter Pounder. Though seeing as this is a 5 year old thread I should probably just watch the later updated version. 😂
Geddy Lee and Steve Harris both play with extremely low action and hard hitting fingers. That rattling sound makes both Rush and Maiden sound very distinctive from the bass sound alone.
You said Steve used the Ibanez on Piece of Mind. I saw an interview with Michael Kenny (Steve's bass tech) where he said the main bass has been used on every album.
Its his first precision bass, I believes its a 1950s model in white. Obviously hes had it repaired and refitted many times over the years but that is the bass hes used on every album. Those endorsement basses like the roadstar and lado were very sparingly used live and always seemed to me like he got paid to use them in video spots so they could sell the guitars. in 95% of concerts ive seen he used p basses.
Awesome channel, mate! Keep up the great work! I love Steve Harris' signature Rotosound Flatwound strings. You get all the bottom end of flatwounds, but that nice midrange clarity associated with roundwounds on top. Great stuff!
Thank you Don, that's nice of you to say so. I've yet to try 'Arrys signature strings. I been listening to a lot of Maiden recently and seriously thinking about his signature pickup though! May as well throw in some strings at that point XD
Yeah, the pickup sounds great too! Next time I need a new P-bass pickup I'll probably go for that one or the EMG Geezer Butler myself. I got kinda hooked on flatwounds after trying the Rotosounds :-)
I'd be torn between the Geezer pup too haha. Let me know if you do get one or the other, I'd love to hear what you think. I'm hesitant on flats, I wonder if I'd still get punchy tone. I suppose it depends if your band mates posses the ability to tune down a bit too!
Will do :-) Yeah, you lose a bit of top end with flats, but it's pretty easy too dial back on your amp. That way you have more control over the frequencies... at least that's my theory! I like pushing the mids more than the treble anyway. The Rotosound flats are also very bright for flats, much brighter than old school flats like LaBella. Getting less string buzz is a good bonus too!
Noice, I play bass and love Steve Harris so much. He’s my favorite bassist, Jaco Pastorius and Bootsy Collins follows as well. Iron Maiden is my favorite heavy metal band. Steve Harris is my favorite bassist. Other than that, cool:).
actually in an interview steve said his main bass (the white westham one ) was the blue bass he previously used , just repainted , also he said it was a 57 fender P NOT a 70's model. eehhh you also missed a fact about his amps , durring the 80's he often used a galien Kruger amp.
The old blue bass and the white bass with the West Ham United crest are the same bass. He did not replace it; he had it refinished. Also, you never mention that his bass has a maple body. The original bass was made in the late 1960's (I think '69) at a time Fender had an order to fill and the only wood on hand to fill it was maple. The maple body Precision bass, which is MUCH heavier than a normal Precision, has a huge affect on his sound. He also uses some newer signature model basses on stage, because you can't rely on one instrument for three hours every night on an entire tour.
Pretty good video, recently Steve changed to Orange and is now using the Orange Four Stroke amp. Didn't Steve also use actual compressors slotted in his rack somewhere?
Hey Andy, thanks for the comment. I'm not sure about his gear for this year. New interviews came out after the video was published. As for compressors, this was mentioned in the show notes as a DBX 160 rack mounted compressor.
The second note of the pentatonic scale you show makes that a minor scale. It's going to fit awkwardly with major chords from the relative major scale most of the time.
Great video, wish you'd go into more detail in general, but otherwise stellar. Also I think he either uses or used an Orange 4stroke bass amp, correct me if I'm wrong.
Steve no longer uses those Trace Elliot pre-amps along with power amps, not sure why possible they just died because they're so old but I'm speculating, he now uses Orange 4-Stroke 500 heads
Hey Lewis, yeah I learned the same shortly after posting the video which is a shame! Thanks for the heads up, I've put this information in the show notes to compensate. I guess Trace Elliot went a different way. Those newer Trace Elliot Elf's just don't look very powerful.
TE was bought out by Gibson around 2000 and they basically gutted the company. Remenants were sold to Peavey who have done practically nothing to revive the brand. The Made in England TE gear is still highly sought after, but getting scarce. I own that exact amp you pictured...didnt know he used them. mines from mid 90s and still running strong.
Thanks for shedding some light on TE DrawingFiles. That's a shame about TE, I used to use their amps many years ago and quite liked them. I didn't realise they were bought out and neglected. That's a shame.
Ashdown is really making some great bass amps these days and have a definite sound and tone of their own. i really like their amps. Not fond of their cabinets with the blue speakers and they lack any type of 2x15 cabinet which most if not all companies have now a days which is a true crime. The youth of today just dont have the will to lug a real bass cabinet from gig to gig.
fun video. been followin' the Maiden since '82. thanx . i'm kinda out of curiosity about Gene Simmons' rigs over the years. couldn't do his rigs could you?
He pretty much started with Ampeg as most bass players did in those years because they could not afford Acoustic controls Corp. amps. He did run Sunn amps for a couple of years and I think that was the Love Gun era, then he was back with Ampeg and is to this day.
Thanks dude! That is an interesting question. I've seen people suggest it's three fingers and that's totally plausible but in my research, I believe it's two fingers. You never know, it could be both!
Man i also learned to do up and down strokes with my pointer middle and ring finger which sucks because your down strokes are accented by your finger nail
How about doing a video of Jaun Croucer of Ratt. Rachel Bolin of Skid Row. Also, Francis Buchholz of Scorpions. Jeff Pilson of Dokken and Forieghner would be great too.
the sh 77 set comes from the rotosound 77L set which was the standard strings before his signatures . A good rig rundown but missing a huge amount including the evolution of his rig as is listed in multiple tour programmes most memorable the piece of mind tour prog. Also hammer on and pull offs are standard bass techniques so maybe not needing of description here as if this was a technique breakdown it barely scratched the surface so maybe separate rig and technique vids would be awesome in future ;) p.s. he formed maiden and didn't join the band also his west ham bass is the same precision from years ago resprayed which has been well documented and is still his main bass ;)
Thanks for the feedback Darksite, there are some parts missing and I hope to make a redeux video in the future. You can be sure all of this will be included.
Hey Percebe, I've seen a picture of him holding one but can't tell if and how that contributed to his gear. I can't imagine him with a Jazz though?! That would be weird.
Which Bass haha, it would also be funny to see him using a pick AND play jazz bass. Thanks guys for the comments and thanks for the video. Very cool and super informative!
Hi Alfie! I happen to have some info and some pics about Steve's rig back from 2003. Some of that has not been mentioned in this video. Please contact me if you're interested in those details. :) Keep up the good work!
Hey Secracon, that would be really interesting I'd love to see that. I'm sure you can tell, the Steve Harris video was my first and I had no idea wth I was doing so missed out a chunk of info. I'll give you a message to say hello, hopefully revisiting Steve in the future. Thanks for the comment!
It is an 8th then 2 16ths, but the 2 16ths followed by the next 8th forms a triplet D DD/D DD/D DD But it depends on how it’s written int each bar, it can be triplets too, as long as there’s an 8th note DDD DDD DDD Maiden write their gallops as the 8th-2 16ths version
In my humble opinion next to Steve comes the great Jim Lea of Slade. Vastly underrated as a bass player/keyboard/violinist probably because the musically ignorant only know him for that bloody Christmas song.
The DEFINITIVE revised Steve Harris Bass Rig can be found @ ruclips.net/video/2Fy12zdesCQ/видео.html !
When we gonna get a phil lesh from the grateful dead breakdown! He had many one of a ki d basses with custom mods Pleeeaassseeee!
any estimate to when specifically the updated version will come out
@@nicoperez1031 Towards the end of the year hopefully. fingers crossed it'll actually have some exciting news too!
Love this channel, haven't watched one this far back, cool how far you've progressed with content and presentation, look forward to the update 🤟🤟
it’d be cool to see an updated version of this once people like Steele or others are done
Steve Harris IS the reason why I first wanted to pick up the bass from the very beginning, and that's been 27 years ago now. He's always been one Hell of an inspiration to me, and A LOT of other bassists all over the world as well. He is a true musician indeed.
Same for me! There was a period when Steve and Maiden shaped my playstyle. As did the others I've covered in one way or another!
hughes2397 and also the fact that he has no knowledge of music theory makes it ironically cool..
ha sounds like you been playing almost just as long as me 28 years here and harris is also why i chose bass.
I believe Steve stated that he doesnt use 3 fingers to gallop and instead uses two fingers and just plays very fast. Either way he's an amazing bass player!!!
Thanks Michael, I believe this to be the case also. Either way I've not seen definitive proof he uses 3 fingers so I'm open to suggestions!
He has stated in interviews in Bass Player Magazine that it is all two finger and not three, so you guys are correct.
Not sure if it's intentional, but I've also seen him use a thumb/index style on some songs, like the intros of clansman and fear of the dark
That's why he's nicknamed Steve "Bomber" Harris!
He also says this in the abbey road sessions from the AMOLAD bonus stuff.
I learned to play bass following along to Maiden albums 30+ years ago. Then came Geddy. Was actually a fairly natural progression...
TwinRavens I wish I could play along with the album
Cliff
The Bass with the West Ham Crest is his main one. Thanks Oddball, another vote for Les Claypool you got it.
Les claypool
Steve's tech, Micheal Kenny claims that the Trace Eliot is actually a backup. His main amp is an amp a friend made for him based on a Hiwatt solid state bass amp. He has used it since the 80's
Steve Harris is the world best master Bass Guitarist in the world.
DBX160 > Preamp: Electron - Custom made Hiwatt NCA 108 specs into C Audio SR 707 amps to 8 Marshall 4x12" Ev 12L loaded . He now uses Orange 4 Stroke amps, Orange 4x12 with the EV 12L speakers.

Justin chancellor from tool! Dude has an incredible bass tone and rig
Great suggestion, that would be interesting. I'll put it on the list!
Which Bass thanks coming from you its a big compliment. And im only 46. Lol. Please keep those great videos coming.
I started jamming Bass back in 1983 because of Steve Harris and Geddy Lee been clankin the Bass since
Hey can you do Eddie Jackson from Queensryche.? I always thought he had a great bass tone especially on Mind Crime.
Hey Gregg, that sounds good to me. I'll put Eddie on the list and see what I can do ;)
That's a great name to showcase.
Yes please.
Afaik the first bass he bought was a '66 Precision Bass with slab body, he found in a pawn shop, which was originally exclusively produced for UK. Entwistle had several of these basses as well, of which only 25 in total were produced at all. No idea what happened to it.
Steve is undoubtedly the best
Wow! Great work bud, thank you!!
Thanks very much dude! See you in the next videos ;)
The legend, the god, Mr. Steve Harris.
The GREATEST BASS PLAYER... EVER!!!
Never heard such a detailed explanation of what Hammer Ons and Pull Offs are. Interesting.
Hey man, nice video. I would like to see a review of John Myung from DT.
Hey Juan, thanks for watching. John is a great suggestion I'll see what I can do.
I love Steve Harris' signature West Ham P Bass. Great review. I really like the simplicity of the Harris setup. He focuses on technique over extremely expensive boutique style basses and rigs. Very cool....i actually enjoyed this...very informative ! Thanks
Thanks very much Cruise, glad you enjoyed it. I hope you can subscribe for more!
Thank you ! I learned a lot about Steve's gear.
All the best ;)
By the way I love your accent !
Hey! I'm glad you enjoyed yourself and learned something. That's great! I've never been complimented on my accent before so I do thank you for that and hope you'll join me in the next video to hear some more dulcet tones!
I could appreciate your accent because I'm not native ;)
Very good! Harry is so unique due to self-teaching, just like many others the developed a signature sound on their own
That Ibanez era is so good, I'm looking for one of those pj's
Great video! He’s probably the biggest influence on my actual playing style than anyone!
Thanks Jody, glad you enjoyed it.
I fucking love this series
Thank you Jimmy Joe Johnson, glad to have you watching.
Great review, congratulations. I really like the fact that he doesn't use pedal effects (maybe a few inside the amps). Thumbs up, thanks!
Thanks Valerio, yeah dude. Steve is all technique, it's a testament that you can get a brilliant sound without super complicated gear.
Steve has a signature orange bass head now, he used to use the other head though
just discovered this....spot on. How about doing this for Bob Daisley and Dennis Dunaway?
Hey Bryan, thanks for the great suggestions. Consider them both on the list.
Which Bass I'll keep an eye open for them.....my three favorite bassists are Daisley, Dunaway, and Harris..
Informative & interesting.😀
Thanks for the good word Robert. I'll see you on the next vid ;)
Steve's signature pick up is the Seymour Duncan SPB-4. Not 1. I love this series and can't wait to to see more, keep it up man 😀
Thanks Theladrion, glad to have you waching. Has it always been SPB-4? Or has time now passed that there's been 4 iterations? lol
He, that I don't know the answer to, as the question makes little sense in context for me. The SPB-4 had been around since at least 2014 when I bought mine, but the SPB-1 is a Vintage pick up, the SPB-2 is "hot output", the SPB-3 is the Quarter Pounder.
Just found the box they came in, the patent is registered in 2013.
Thanks for clarifying, no idea where I got SPB-1 from haha. I'll remember that for the update video ;)
Before he got his signature SPB-4 he used to use the SPB-3 Quarter Pounder.
Though seeing as this is a 5 year old thread I should probably just watch the later updated version. 😂
My dream bass, along with a Rickenbacker, is that blue p-bass with a mirror pickguard.
Brilliant choice for Poop! Good to see you back.
I know i commented on this video a while ago..but i really enjoy it. Thanks again!
Haha thanks Cruise, glad you'll still watching dude :D
Geddy Lee and Steve Harris both play with extremely low action and hard hitting fingers. That rattling sound makes both Rush and Maiden sound very distinctive from the bass sound alone.
You said Steve used the Ibanez on Piece of Mind. I saw an interview with Michael Kenny (Steve's bass tech) where he said the main bass has been used on every album.

Great job as you focus on facts and not loads of self-centred waffle.
Thanks dude, you bet. Who needs another dudes opinion when you just need answers!

great initiative mate!
Hey Naveen, thanks a bunch and thank you for subscribing. The next one will be out soon!
Which Bass 😃😃😃😃😃😃
i ve got a ibanez roadster bout 80s. now im fucking happy!
Steve before play Precision, using a Jazz Bass, i see in old photos of live concerts in the beging of Iron Maiden ;)
Great analysis!
Thanks Mattaki, glad to have you watching.
Great video, interesting to watch, thanks for research!
Thank you RocWeller, very glad you enjoyed the video.
very good analysis!
Thanks Joerg, you should see the newer videos ... Let's just say they have improved a little bit ;)
thank you, it was a amazyng sum-up :)
Thanks Miguel! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Great video. Maiden Rules!!!!
Thank you Crimson, glad you enjoyed it.
Which Bass Any chance of seeing a David Ellefson vid?
Definitely, he's in the running in about 2 videos time.
Pretty good video, recently Steve changed to Orange and is now using the Orange Four Stroke amp.
Didn't Steve also use actual compressors slotted in his rack somewhere?

Hey Amalia, thanks for the comment. I hope to revisit Steve's gear in the future as there is a lot more I wish I had included. Thanks for watching!
Great video!
Thank you David, glad to have you watching.
Great to the point video. Look forward to seeing more of these, Chris Wolstenholme of Muse and Mike Kerr of Royal Blood perhaps?
Muse would be fascinating to look at, thanks for the suggestion! I'll also take a look at Royal Blood :D
Steve no longer uses those Trace Elliot pre-amps along with power amps, not sure why possible they just died because they're so old but I'm speculating, he now uses Orange 4-Stroke 500 heads

That's a great suggestion Ivan, I'll put it on the list.

My question is: does he play the gallop with two or three fingers?
Thanks dude! That is an interesting question. I've seen people suggest it's three fingers and that's totally plausible but in my research, I believe it's two fingers. You never know, it could be both!
I think he uses his first and third fingers for playing fast stuff. Like he's drumming.
Two
Gracias amigo...
De nada chap.
Very good
Man i also learned to do up and down strokes with my pointer middle and ring finger which sucks because your down strokes are accented by your finger nail
"STEPHEN PERCY HARRIS THE BEST OF BASS PLAYER... HE'S A GREAT MUSICIAN..!!!"
🎸🤘🤘🤘👍👍👍😎😎😎
Excellent post..I've a request if possible can you do posts on Tony Sales (iggy/Bowie) Chris Glenn (MSG) Pete Way (UFO) and Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy)
All great choices Ktmpl, thank you. I'll put them all on the list.
He's been seen with Jazz Basses in the 70s man
très intéressant merci
Merci mon ami :D
Nice video on one of my favourite bass players. How about a run down of my Number 1 bass player, Philip Lynott.
Thanks Lee, Phil would be a great video thanks for the suggestion.
Awesome video! Can you do one on Lemmy?
Not enough love for Lemmy! You bet dude, Lemmy is on the list.
would love to see you go over Mariusz Duda of Riverside and his gear....
Thanks TwinRaven, I'll add him to the list.
Doni Blair from The Toadies plays an out of the box stock Steve Harris "West Ham" Fender.
Is that right? He has good taste!
2:00 Bro wtfhappened to the audio??
Ah that must be RUclips and copyright nonsense.
How about doing a video of Jaun Croucer of Ratt. Rachel Bolin of Skid Row. Also, Francis Buchholz of Scorpions. Jeff Pilson of Dokken and Forieghner would be great too.
Brilliant list there Jimmy, I like it a lot. I will see what I can do.
Steve Harris this maestro very good
circa survive bassist tone is just OMG :):):)
the sh 77 set comes from the rotosound 77L set which was the standard strings before his signatures .
0:32 I thought that said 3 Asses
He didn't 'join' Maiden lol. And I think the band wanted to try new sounds on Somewhere In Time as they used synths!
Didn't he used a 75 or 76 jazz bass with Iron Maiden in the early years?
Hey Percebe, I've seen a picture of him holding one but can't tell if and how that contributed to his gear. I can't imagine him with a Jazz though?! That would be weird.
Which Bass the soundhouse tapes was recorded with the jazz
Ah alright! Thanks for the heads up! I'll put it in the show notes.
I believe strictly 73 or 74 P-Basses, as it's the large headstock lettering that gives it away.
Which Bass haha, it would also be funny to see him using a pick AND play jazz bass.
Thanks guys for the comments and thanks for the video. Very cool and super informative!
Flatwounds? Wow they have great sound, I always thought they were round's.
P bass with a Badass II bridge....my exact weapon of choice.
Awesome! What do you like about the BA bridge?
@@WhichBass Sustain, sustain, and more sustain. LOL. Also, it feels easier changing strings. They kind of ride up that ramp. But seriously, sustain.
0:40, can I just say, Steve formed Maiden, didn't join
Short and to the point. And the video matches. Pbass. Nuff said. Next.
I'll send you an email to the address that on your website.
The gallop is triplets I believe -- not an 8th followed by 2 - 16ths
It is an 8th then 2 16ths, but the 2 16ths followed by the next 8th forms a triplet
D DD/D DD/D DD
But it depends on how it’s written int each bar, it can be triplets too, as long as there’s an 8th note
DDD DDD DDD
Maiden write their gallops as the 8th-2 16ths version
In my humble opinion next to Steve comes the great Jim Lea of Slade. Vastly underrated as a bass player/keyboard/violinist probably because the musically ignorant only know him for that bloody Christmas song.
8 cabinets with 32 12" speakers? Wow!
Would be rad if you'd cover Billy Sheehan
Great suggestion, thanks Luuk.
great video! Mike Starr from Alice in Chains would be a cool video to watch!
Great suggestions KWC, I like it. Watch this space.
God job!!!
Thank you for the comment and for subscribing Salim. The new video is on the way!
Are you recording with web cam???
In this video, no. Handicam. In the others a Canon 750D.
You missed to include that SH uses a Bass Exciter
Hey John, thanks for the tip. I've added this to the show notes.
Am i the first to suggest Cliff Burton? That would be a cool vid to see.
Hey dude, yeah I think you are! Metallica fans have much to look forward to, don't you worry ;)
Wreckoning I wanted to let you know after 5 months now my Cliff Burton video is now out ruclips.net/video/3cb_99LWKnM/видео.html
