  • A tracheostomy tube is an artificial airway which bypasses a person’s upper airway. The tracheostomy tube is inserted directly into the trachea via a surgically created hole called a stoma.
Tracheostomy tubes can be made from several different types of materials and can come in various styles. One key feature which differentiates tracheostomy tubes into two distinct groups is the presence or absence of a balloon-like structure called a cuff. Join me this week as I discuss the difference between cuffed and uncuffed tracheostomy tubes. #lifewithavent #tracheostomy

Thank you so much for explaining this cuff and uncuffed for me. I currently take care of a lady with a trach and feeding tube and never knew what cuffed or uncuffed meant or the reasons why. This makes so much more sense to me now 😊

My mom will be having this surgery soon this week... thank you for your informative videos. This whole process is scary to me. She has been in ICU for over a month with other medical conditions.

Hi again, my father decided on getting a trach after much resistance. He is scheduled to get a trach tomorrow. He needs a trach because he is unable to clear secretions and has chronic aspiration. If can breathe on his own is better to use uncuff trach so he can breathe using nose and mouth

Hello. The first tracheostomy tube your father will get will most likely be a cuffed tracheostomy tube. (If you ask your father's doctor, they will be able to tell you which tracheostomy tube they used.) Usually, about a month after surgery is when the first tracheostomy tube is replaced. You will want to ask your father's doctor which trach tube is best for him.
As a general rule, cuffed tracheostomy tubes are only used for people who use a ventilator. Uncuffed trach tubes are used for most other people.
I hope everything goes well tomorrow. All my best to you and your father.

@Life with a Vent Hi, I hope your year is going well. I didn't respond earlier because I wanted to only share something positive. After the procedure, my father was really down. I felt like it may have been the wrong decision, but I'm happy to report that his mood is slowly improving, and he even admitted the trach helps his condition. He was very against the trach because he has to manage various health concerns, so I didn't want to add another, but I am glad to report it was the right decision. Thank you for your videos and responding it helped during a very stressful time. Blessings to you.
