My mom was issued one of this when she was a police officer in Puerto Rico in the 90's. I remember seeing that rifle thinking it had a really cool looking magazine.
@@brookeb127 Vickers made a video about his efforts for weight loss. I'd say it is relevant to talk about and he should be praised for getting fit, especially at his age where most would say "its fine because I'm not young"
One small correction, the shell deflector is actually a gas deflector since the ejector is built into the pinned magwell. The amount of gas from the blowback operation is a bit much, so that block of rubber was added to the ejection port to get that gas out of your face (especially moreso with suppressed blowback operation).
@commiesnzombies - I don't own the sub-gun version, ( unfortunately 😒) but I do own the semiautomatic version, ( Colt model 6450 ) and as a lefty on long guns, it's not a problem at all.
Larry's out here swimming in his shirts; gives my chunky ass motivation to get-up-and-go, get at it and improve my health and quality of life! Wishing you continued personal success, Larry! God Bless.
Larry, the *Colt Commando SMG {Colt 9mm Submachine Gun}* is a really neat weapon I came to own a few years ago when my dad got sick & gave me his firearm collection. {I cant believe one recently sold for over 30k} I already own several select-fire rifles & SMGs, including some I may NEVER USE like the Uzi, mini-Uzi, the Sten plus some other's, but my dad felt so deeply about the option to go buy an automatic weapon that he put a lot of money into buying select-fire rifles with AR10 & AR15 "spare or extra parts" like lower/upper kits that were un-boxed after 40 years & basically all the 'innards'' required to lawfully build some really neat, modern styled rifles around these legally owned "machine guns" bought in the early '80s for a few bucks. When dad passed, he had just finished rebuilding my 2A U.S flag wrapped, semi-auto AR around a select-fire "machine gun" that was 1 of 3 ARs bought by his dad in 1960 - Its amazing to think 2 of my "modern" hunting rifles are 61 years old - He had given me these before he passed away at just 69 yrs old in 2015. My dad loved shooting & if he saw a neat weapon on TV then he had to have it {Hence the Uzi's, Mach 10, etc}. The Colt Commando was his home defense rifle, although it's an SMG. I like it for this too but with one just selling for $31k at auction, I should keep it with other expensive weapons that cannot be replaced in the gun room in our storm shelter/underground maze here in Oklahoma. We have 3 acres of pasture with 360-acres of woods around us which is surrounded by 5k acres of woods belonging to someone else. So below our home, stables, barn & cabin just inside the woods is a maze that is one big storm shelter/bunker that I had put down before starting work on building our home, etc, which were built on top of each hatch, which opens like an attic ladder - not too steep for all the family. It is all connected & after all, we are second in the nation for deaths by tornadoes so my wife demanded it if we were to move out here {But who am I to complain, lol} I want to protect my family & my weapons. I have some weapons ready for auction including matching revolvers & rifle with a family name engraved on them but I absolutely REFUSE TO SELL a select-fire weapon to someone I feel won't have the same respect for it that my dad & I do, appreciating these are historical weapons that won't be available again. But I'll never sell this amazingly cool & comfortable SMG Commando that feels sort of like an AR-P. It's a really beautiful gun. What a great home defense weapon, for my home, maybe not yours. Can I use a $30k weapon as my home defense? I don't like my favorite guns been essentially buried in a secret safe to be taken out rarely. That's not how dad raised us, so yes, this is my home defense - A 9mm Sub Machine Gun, lol. He even went to town a few times with it & everyone knew dad & loved him so nobody ever got nervous. Even the sheriff came out to hunt hogs with the M2 & other machine guns from vehicles, just like we use ATVs today with automatic weapons}
Carried this SMG for many years in DEA before we switched to RRA LAR15. We also had M16 A1 with full auto capability. Thing with the SMG , it was an individual issue, so when changing offices, you take it with you (if you wanted) I took mine from Eugene, OR, to RET Des Moines, IA, to all our deployments (Omaha, Iowa, California, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Springfield, Joplin, etc....) then to Albuquerque. Fantastic for 99% of what we were doing which was search warrants in houses, buy/bust, surveillance, and urban ops. I wonder what happened to those things?
Thank you for keeping drugs and guns off our streets and out of thugs hands. They go hand in hand I realize. Not many realize that. I do. All for guns more than anyone - just not in regards to crime and drugs. From near where you once were, CRIA. TY!
They made thier way to local pds. I'm sad to inform you, that a batch just got cut in half today at my local store. These served the BOP my father ad I used to work at, then went state, then county sherrif. Now the uppers and all the parts that can be salvaged will be rebuilt as semi/safe guns and sold on the civilian market. (I'm very excited for this.)
Thank you mr Vickers... Yeah the code 639 was used by the DEA..clet... clandestine laboratory enforcement teams but that still is a cool gun.. I'm still in love with the MP5 thank you I hope you are doing good I think about you all the time I pray for you
I once had a 1989 Colt firearms catalog. And the civilian legal version of this smg was semi-automatic only and of course having a 16" barrel but comes with high capacity mags same as the smg.
Hey Bro looking great! I had my hands on the colt SMG several times during the 90's and early 2000's at Phoenix PD and Gunsite. I really liked it especially the flat top with an aimpoint on it and thought if you really wanted to simplify training for your SWAT unit (late 90's early 2000's we had MP5's, M4, Styer AUG, Robar bolt guns and HK 91's w/ PSG trigger groups and night vision optics besides the ubiquitous Rem 870's and a couple of ancient S&W single barrel gas guns) go with the Colt 9mm SMG, M4 and Knight SR25's for the precision rifles and greatly simplify all the gun handling/malfunction clearance and maintenance issues. though the 9mm did have a magazine issue in the early years in that the mag's didn't need much damage before the lips went bad and half a mag of ammo would spew onto the ground when the bolt opened.
Pretty interesting! But I would have stuck with the MP-5. Always been my favorite sub gun...never got to try one in full auto though. Fired a auto AK and a Uzi. Awesome vid as always LAV... thanks!✌
Nicely made video. I just bought a 6991 sbr that's in jail, that should be approved mid Jan. I bought it because I have a transferable NIB R0633 I bought directly from Colt executive John Keosayian 5 years back. It is serial number 9. The rarity of this transferable SMG made me buy a 6991, to get comfortable with it and actually shoot it. In the case SHTF, I will just pick up the SMG. I have several registered M16s from the JK collection, but the SMG is one of the most rare.
I know this smg wasn’t a huge success, but boy do I love this gun. This has the DEA war on drugs written all over it. Just dripping with 80’s nostalgia
Nice video. I used to carry one. Easy to squeeze off accurate 2-shot burst. 3rd shot always wanted to go high-right - just like M16A1s. Weak point were the mags when the originals wore out & Colt didn’t have any replacements. Now think they were ugly - consider the 3-D cell sized rechargeable weapons lights that mounted like a bayonet and had the output of a mini mag...
Quite popular down here in Mexico back in the day, still in use by some municipal police departments usually quite beat up pieces externally but shot a little. Personally I don’t like em and they can’t hold a candle to an MP5, better option than a full size UZI though which also still roam around with some low budget departments. Looking great Larry.
Love my LE6991 with QC10 Lower. I also have the AR6951 as well. I never had any issues with mine what so ever. I'm also not shooting full auto. If I were to ever switch which I never will because I'm a die hard Colt fan boy . It would Def be SIG MPX .
I shot an MP5 because my sister is on the swat team and I purchased a transferable UZI, I know that the UZI has no muzzle rise in full auto due to a slower fire rate and is perfectly balanced due to the magazine placement in the grip, she didn't believe me until she shot it herself and she was shocked how easy it is to stay on target in full auto compared to the MP5, this SMG looks even more uncontrollable in full auto even more then the MP5. Can you do a UZI vs MP5 video Mr.Vickers?
I like this idea. Rifle platform and cheap ammo. Great for sport target shooting and for home defense for those who like me prefer butstocks over handheld
Why I’m skinny: I HUSTLE! Lookin’ great LAV! Heavy mass bcg is definitely appearant in muzzle dispersion. Would totally buy an updated version with full adjustable buttstock and better bolt, spring, trigger components. Sounds like I just sold myself on the CMMG BANSHEE. I’ll take it!!
"7-1000 rounds per minute" is quite the range! I'd love to see a full-auto with a 7 rounds per minute rate of fire. just hold the trigger down and it fires slightly faster than once every 10 seconds.
What are your thoughts on the MEAN Arms P-Mag adapter that would allow you to run the 9mm Colt upper on an unmodified AR lower? I'm thinking about a pistol build with a 10.5", just wouldn't want to mix up the mags.
Info. was a little weak this time around. As mentioned below, the plastic thing is a gas deflector, and in addition, the US Department of Energy (DOE) used them in a very interesting, and short, variant. A common problem, and perhaps its main weakness, was empty casings getting stuck in the trigger group before Colt added a spacer to the back of the buffer tube thereby shortening the travel distance of the bolt and leaving less of a gap, or open space, for empties to fall into. This can still happen today with those assembling 9mm ARs if care isn't taken in the selection of the buffer length, weight, and spring setup. Those who comment that it's a weird looking SMG are probably the same who think a hammer looks weird on handguns. Cinematography was spot on, as usual.
Larry, I just qualified on one a few months ago, so they are still out there, but are rapidly being phased out in favor of the MK18. It gets a lot of hate but is a blast to shoot!
First time I saw this smg I was a kid watching the 80s tv series Miami Vice....when a team of DEA agents went to storm a trailer home and when they entered it blew up. I said to myself I want one of those!!!! Lol
Great intro vid LAV. Would have liked you to give more commentary if you think overall it is a good weapon or not and how exactly good or bad compares to MP5. Such as iis it a better replacement for the cost?
