Thank you for your advice. It gave me the confidence to try the panel centre front air controls. I used a combination of Eucalyptus and baby oil. This softened the goo and I was then able to gently scratch off using my finger nail. To remove the residue I used lemon juice which brought up the last bits of sticky. I then gently wiped with water. I now have a smooth surface which looks great.

Thanks, I have a ML and the exact black (in my case) piece of rubber around the light switch is so sticky/gummy. The interesting thing is it’s the only interior piece that that has gotten sun exposure and is gummy. I was considering tearing it apart and replacing it. I will try your solution 1st and report back.
So not having any lemons around I did see simple green in the garage and decided to give it a try. It worked beautifully I am so happy to have that gunk off. I didn’t know they coated interior plastic like that so thank you again I was going to replace it. None of the writing rubbed off very pleased. 🙏🏻

Noticed this on my E55. Tried a little spit shine but noticed the paint decals coming off. Now I’m scared to try anything else.
Whatever you do, easy does it. Don't press too hard
I used 409 surface cleaner with lemon - the goo came off in a few minutes!

What did you use for the buttons
The buttons on my CL are sticky. I might try that

Soaking the buttons does not have a risk of shorting out or killing the buttons?

Best thing you can do is replace the cover. 10 euros in AliExpress and a T25 to remove it. Remove the cover and put the new cover. It looks way better, like new.
I ordered a replacement cover put cannot get the original faceplate off. Looked online and there was a video but I was unable to get it off? Any tips?

That also works, but if not careful you may also strip the writing.
anything sticky means there's glue involved right? so glue comes out with rubbing alcohol and a soft steel wool or wire brush. Lemon or "citrus" is used as a degreaser, why? CITRIC ACID!!! . for unpainted surface u can also use a little bit of nail polish remover, why? "ACETONE!!it removed glue
The sticky is a type of varnish that auto manufacturers used to cover the buttons of their high end cars in order to have premium feel. With time the composition of the varnish turned it into a sticky mess. Using citrus I assume is because the citric acid is much milder than the rest of the options. I did not use acetone, because it would have stripped not only the top layer, but also the markings that cover the plastic.
