- I'm playing a 1983 Marshall JCM800 1x12 Combo. This is the combo version of the 2204 Master Lead Head and it's got the model number 4010. It's got the stock Celestion G12-65 Speaker. I'm using a 2008 Gibson Les Paul R9 and a 2021 Fender Telecaster Custom Shop 60 Relic. This is the ultimate Marshall work horse for any style.

I bought my 4010 new as a punk kid thirty-seven years ago.
I’ve pawned it a few times, nearly lost it several times…
I sit here looking at it fondly and gratefully, as my lifelong friend.

Really is their best ever combo IMO. Never ever heard an 800 sound bad though. The 900 was such a different sounding amp, so much so that we were all massively disappointed
What a great sounding amp. And the guitars were stellar too. There is an appeal to a small self contained amp that you can take anywhere and sound great with.

That was my first proper amp, purchased new in 1983. All my savings and a little help from mom were in it (I was 13). Followed in '87 by a Kitty Hawk Supreme I and in '89 I got a '67 Super Lead, Black Flag, which I use to this day. Those 4010's are great little amps though.
The fun bit: I sold to the 4010 to someone who has it to this day. I bought the Black Flag from a former bandmate for dirt cheap (fl 75 = abt €35) and that former bandmate insisted on buying the Kitty Hawk from me and also uses it to this day.

The Drake Transformer is the secret mojo about this amp...it makes sound MAGICAL!
That amp doesn’t sound magical. Marshall’s vary widely in sound, tone from one to the next, even identical years, models.

This is Marshall's 2nd best combo ever, coming in after the Bluesbreaker. The Celestion G12-70 is a great sounding speaker in this combo as well. Underrated for sure, with a smooth greenbackish tone.

g12-65 used on late 70’s ac/dc records. hwh bnb. my rockitt retro 76 sounds dead on to that sound. the cream back 65 and g12-65 together sound really great too

I have a 1982 4010. Mine has the lower B+ voltage that these amps had until sometime in 1982. Very "brown" and bluesy sounding! The G12-65 speaker is awesome in these amps!

Nothing beats the LP/Marshall combination, but I must say that I really like your blond Tele. Some of the best single coil tones I've heard.

I bought so many Marshall amps. Sold so many after I cleaned them up, fixed and retubed them. I didn't modify any of them. I still have a few.

what a great amp, I have a 1982 4104, basically the same as this amp with 2x12 and I love it but will trade it for a 4010 because of the size. The 4104 is a killer to carry at 2AM after a gig. Excellent demo and facts about the amp, thank you, Johan. Have a great weekend, let's go!
True. 78 lbs but sweet sounding.
I use a foldable dolly if I need to, my arm and back thank me for it.
You weaklings would die if you had to carry a super reverb then!

Glorious tone through the les Paul.
I got my 4010 with a mod, (claim was that it was done by Demeter). It was basically a channel switching mod. I made a diagram and yanked it out and put it back to stock. I then modded the treble peaking circuit and I found this input switching PC board, (I forgot the maker). I put in some dual concentric pots for the preamp and master . Now I can set a true clean and gain channel and switch between them. Awesome amp.
I have a 1989 JCM800 4010 combo I absolutely love with the exception, mine came with a Celeston Wolverine speaker was absolutely horrible high end would just rip your head off lol. I actually replaced my speaker with a Eminence DV-77 Mick Thompson speaker, absolutely amazing in this amp, especially when the volume is around 3 , holy crap, super nice! I also had mine autographed by Zakk Wylde back in 2007 , it's absolutely a prize for me.

i have a 1983 4010 and it's fantastic. Put a 75w Creamback in it and stand back :D
After years of searching, around 5-6 years ago I got a hold of the 1984 Marshall JCM800 4010 50W Combo (verticle input w/original green back speaker etc). I put a Lynch Mod in the pre amp tubes. Without using any pedals, just plug into the amp straight from the guitar, you get the vintage late 1970's early 1980's sound Aerosmith, Metallica, Van Halen sound. I'll never sell this amp.
I bought one of these for about £500 as the first thing I did when my band got a record deal 20 years ago. Had to sell it about 6/7 years ago when suffering with depression and needing to make rent. Still utterly heartbroken :(

It actually does get that sound! The '82 G1265 sounded closer to the Greenback than the '79. I'd take the G12M70 personally or a 2001 V30 from Mesa UK.

Great amp and you showed all it could do. No offense to the Tele, but I love the Les Paul through the Marshall the best. Great desert island amp if you had to choose just one. God bless and rock on 🎸👍

Marshall JCM800 combos are definitely underrated amps. I have a 1984 4104 that my amp tech has done some modifications to in order to make it sound more like my '72 Super Lead with a1960BX cab. The tubes were changed to JJ KT77's, the bright cap was clipped and he did something to the treble tone stack which I didn't understand. It sounded better than stock but not yet what I wanted. I thought the speakers needed to be swapped from the stock M70's. I tried WGS Reaper's which sounded lifeless, WGS ET65's which sounded ice-picky, Celestion M65's which were better and then G12-65's which were even better. I finally settled on a pair of limited production G12-35XC's which you have reviewed a few years ago. Those speakers sound incredible with in this combo having characteristics of a closed back cab and sounding very similar to G12-65's in a closed back cab. I actually have G12-65's in a 1936 cab (that I normally use with my 2210 head), but in combination with the 4104 may be my best sounding set-up.

Absolute amazing amp, extremely underrated.
Who has ever in the history of Marshall underrated this amp? This is one of their most legendary, famous amps..not even slightly underrated.
Lot of people misunderstand JCM800 amplifiers.
Lot off people think they are loud amplifiers for 90's metal only.
While sure they are good in that role and they are very loud, JCM800 amplifiers in many versions use very similar schematics as legendary Marshall amplifiers before them.
They still have great Drake iron, too.
They are a bit more edgy and bit less refined but they can sound very good.
Combo versions came with both G12-65 and G12T75 speakers.
Personally I have had such hit and miss relationship with G12-65 speakers. Some sounded awesome and others sounded dark and middle heavy. On the other side G12T75 always sounded familiar. Sound I very much recognized as Marshall JCM800 and JCM900 cabinets in 4x12 version was the sound of the G12T75 for me. They were sold on extremely high numbers and they have powered decades of guitar music played on stages in the whole world.
So yeah One coild say I like the JCM800 product.
Though with repairing last one of them I have learned to dislike them. Not only them but all Marshall amplifiers using that same PCB.
That PCB was used in metal panel "Plexi" amps as well. Those that are also related to AC DC sound as well.
Marshall just dud different components or have omitted somd components on the same PCB for different models.
And it is not only me issues with the PCB's in amplifiers in general. I dislike wires used as well.
As those amps are getting old they are falling apart nowadays.
Cold solder points, cables isolation getting bad from tge age and heat. Generally not the best components used on those PCB's. And worst offender thst comes with the age a gact that they were repaired many times before. Some were just botched baddly.
Traces on the PCB delaminated or broken peaces of it due to much heat used when being repaired.
Last one that broke the Camilles back was modified from the top sude where someone just cutt off components leaving their legs in the PCB and soldered new components onto those stumps using blobs of solder.
Leaving all burned resin to.
Amp was also very moded with sone silly mids to.
Took me days to put it in the old glory.
Finally I send it back and friend gets it. But it got broken in the transport. It developed buzz and sounded weak.
Got it back in just to find a snapped ground wire between input jack's and one other wire gaving bad contact. So transport vibrations were enough to do that 😞
Anyhow nasty things to repair that can byte you back even when you do your part really good.
On the other hand I have never had this kind if the issues wirh turret board versions of Marshall amplifiers. Those are built like tanks.

Johan, I like the early 65's 1777 a whole bunch They are kinda between the GB Pulsonics and the Early Vintage 30s. TheEarly 80s 260w 412's are highly coveted in the Southern States. I would say that you will have better chance to find Pulsonics than the speaker in this combo.. Thank You for your teachings. Slowly but Shirlee a highly desirable shows up and I do my best to Pounce. The Wreck is starting to stretch me a little thin, but thanks to you I am good.. Cheers from the Festering Karst

Marshalls + Les Paul is seriously one the best fucking tone ever, every time!
Been using the low input on my 2204 and getting really nice high, headroom, true clean with the neck and middle positions on my LP w 57 p/u. Theres an immediacy (the probably turns some ears off with lots of gain) that’s really nice on clean sounds.
Nice -- Small gig use the 12, larger gigs add the bigger cab. I can imagine a 4x12 cab would move more air and give you 2-3DB more volume.

And sound much better. I think these sound good through a single speaker but when compared to a bigger cab it's nowhere near as good.
I have one of these and it's great!! It has black grill cloth though, not the super cool check cloth like this one. Mine has a V30 someone put in a while back. I tried both Creambacks in it and they sounded good but the V30 sounded a little better playing with the band so it went back in. Also don't sleep on the Low input! Lots of good stuff there too!

I have a 2204 and 2205 into an early 80’s 1936 with two g-65’s.
Dude, I have an old Epiphone Studio 10S plugged into a 2x12 open back cab with vintage 12" alnico Eminence black basket speakers that would blow that amp away, and it only cost 35 dollars used. Too many people buy things based on a "name".
83 was the best year for the 800 and 78 for jmp

I had a 4020 from the later 80's that I got cheap almost 30 years ago and sold a few years ago. I didn't love it. It had the 75's, and the clean sound was a bit cold.

I cant play at high volumes at gigs and it sometimes sounds very thin even if I take off the treble....maybe i did something wrong...

Could you do a 1968 plexi vs jcm800. The jcm sounds like a high gain 68 to me and I want to see if you can make your jcm sound like a 68 or a 68 with boost sound like a jcm.

Did you end up leaving the 4n7 cap on the mod pot ? I remember from one of your earlier vids. I tried adding the cap to my ‘15 2203x and felt like it held the amp back a little. Just curious ! I used to own one of these when I was younger and of course wish I would’ve kept it 🤦🏼

Thanks! I really like it with G12-65, G12H-100 and G12-80 from the 1980s. Marshall branded V30 from the 1980 have sounded great in it. I often use it with a T1281 Greenback but then you need an attenuator dialled back 4-5 dB. Cheers!

Another great video, Johan. I never heard of this amp until I came across this video! I think the amp is cool, and sounds good with you playing it. But I think it could sound better with a different speaker.
JCM 2204 and JMP 2204 have different preamps. Its not just B+. While 2203 JMP and JCM versions are the same.
Not really, but sort of. The first year or so of the 2204 had both sides of the preamp 12ax7 in parallel and made way less gain. After the first year (1977?), the 2204s had the same preamp all the way until the jcm800s of about 1984. Then the preamp stayed the same but filtering changed.

I have this same amp model and year. Found the G12-65 too spikey for me. Put in a G12M75 Creamback and it sounds much fuller. Would love to see your tone settings on yours, Johan!
I thought so too when i got one for my 4010. didn't like at all at first. But 12-65 really benefits from "breaking in" and sounds great when done. .. easiest is to play some pop radio through the amp at ~10-15 watts for a few hours while you go grocery shopping

Thanks! The 4210 gets it’s gain both from tubes and from Diodes and it’s got reverb. It does a great mid scooped trash metal tone
