    Great sounds demo. Thank you for this, Johan. I can confirm the channel 1 sound used to de-ice the wings of aircraft. Channel 2 when EQ’d to the most radical possible settings just begins to be usable and is a great sound for writing. Jumped, the JMP is THE sound of the 70s.

    I agree. The 76 has a bit more gain and edge, the 71 is a little more "brown". Both sound fantastic !!

    Thank you for all your content! Mainly use a 79 Deluxe Reverb for gigs but have been playing more with a 78 JMP 50 watt/ 1936 cab( in office/70’s metal handle tall cab w/ pre Rola Greenbacks in basement) and a 93 Uk AC-30 in my office. Having your good demos and info helps me dial in some great tones! Cheers!

    You do a lot Johan. Just the other day I watched your 50's to current Les Paul video yet again Just love those early 50's Les Pauls up to the '57 which then started getting thinner sound.. I had a '55 that was incredible. This is a great one also. Thanks

    beautiful amps, Johan. Both sound great, the Mark I is bit woollier sounding in the bass but holds tighter than the Mark II. Gain structure sounds the same to me. Love them both. Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend

      There is a diference between the JMP1987X and a JMP100.... But I have not figured out what. I should compare schematics I think.

    The mk2 is the bad ass here, totally. I've had a 1974 for about 10 years. I'm happy I lucked out with that one, I wouldn't have known the differences back then when I got it. It's a killer amp, dead at the moment since I usually set the volumes at near-dimed levels for recording. But what a classic sound it has, wow.

      Trying to learn more about my amp, I rewatched this today (not remembering I had commented before haha). Today I feel the mk 1 sounds way better on the treble channel and the mkII wins on the bass channel. The treble channel on the mkII here shows all the things I end up trying to improve when I use my treble channel on its own (non jump’d). It’s a little too scratchy or wild or something. I usually jump the channels for this reason, and/or maybe add a TS9 to shift the scratchiness back to the mids. Or use a different speaker, mic, mic position, or IR.
      This exact model of 100w mkII is actually a pretty rare amp it seems.

    Should be interesting a similar face to face also with the most recent iterations of the model. I think that takin the SLP out of the catalogue and leaving only the HW was s huge mistake. My SLP and YJM have a wonderful tone. Great video as usual.

    Anyone who owns any JMP, keep in mind your amp can be inexpensively modded to the sound of any other JMP. The only slightly expensive difference is the change to 6550 power tubes. Consult the chart. Any good tech can make the changes.

    It's the '71 for me. Seems to have more definition. The '76 seems to overdrive more though. That's nit picking. Actually, they both sound very similar.

    Which amp sounds best? The one Johan is currently playing!
    Mark 1 is my preference, probably because it was used for the music I like best. In a band mix Mark 2 might stand out better, particularly as the music developed during the 70-ies. Almost all Marshalls have a place in music.

    Another great video and great playing. I own a '71 and it sounds similar to this one. The mkii does have a nicer gain. My mki gets a shrill sound sometimes that causes ear fatigue. That mkii sounded smoother to me.

    Hello Mr Segeborn. Excellent video per usual. 1970-73 super leads are my favorite non master volume Marshalls. They have Plexi character but a more aggressive bite as you detailed on a previous video with the 71 super lead. Although, I’ve played several and they’re very different being hand wired examples.     What a great channel you have! I love those both. Mark 1 maybe better for cleans, Mark 2 for metal and both perfect for rock'n'roll.

    You post one great video after another! They're always interesting and informative.
    I think both Super Lead's sound great...just a slightly different flavor of the classic, vintage Marshall sound. It always surprises me to see that you have the bass set to zero much of the time. I primarily play a1972 Super Lead that is completely stock other than a PPIMV mod thru a 2000 1960BX cab. I always jump the channels with the bright channel set a little higher than the normal channel. I can't bring myself to set the bass to zero. It's usually between 3 and 4. The middle around 4-5 and the treble 6-7. The presence is set to wherever my mood strikes me on a particular day, but always 5 or above. Also, my '72 has a power, standby as well as a polarity switch. Why do some have that and others don't?

      Thanks Mark! Really good to hear that. I roll off bass to get better punch and rely on the cab to provide with bass. I’d rather blend in the normal channel (numbering) to beef it up. I’ve often wondered about the polarity switches my self. I think they’re from the US market? Cheers

    I preferred the Mark 2 clarity and push, as tbr Mark 1 sounded a compressed and dark. My preferences could be reversed on something like a Strat. 🤷

    I am very subjective and I do understand it would be better that I am not so polarized but sorry I am. For me those PCB's are no go, as I have explained on one of the videos before.
    When I see 1971 model with a turret board I can see layout clearly and I know where is what located even if you wake me up in the middle of the night. Like on the picture I see coupling caps behind the phase inverter were changed. I see negative bias filter cap was changed with what it looks like F&T cap (I use them in my amps for filtering). I see lot of stuff being done on both of them actually. On MKII PCB version I see dreaded top of the board soldering done as well.
    I find turret board hand wired amps way more reliable and simple and most often using better component.
    I do not say MKII can't sound good but if it is PCB = no go for me.
    Regarding to schematics there are few important changes though. Namely NFB circuit being one. It is important where you tap it and what is a value of the NFB resistor. Difference between 1967 and 1971 and later is huge. In 1967 it is 16 Ohm tap hence way higher signal to begin with and then almost 4x lover resistance. So 4x higher NFB signal and 4x lower resistor value. That means that a lot stronger NFB signal comes back in to the phase inverter and it supresses original signal way more, hence you get less break up more headroom etc. etc. Amplifiers with higher NFB signal feels less alive to me and harmonic content is often not as rich as it can be. So early models are closer to Fender NFB than Marshall NFB at least to me.
    I am not a great supporter of 2,2 nF coupling caps. Sure at high levels it is OK and saves amp from amplifying some of the lows. This makes for stiffer feeling amp that breaks up differently. Sure less bass was never negative thing on early Marshall amplifiers because lot of them have so much bass that standard EQ setting for lot of people is Bass from ) as minimum and 9 o'clock as maximum value while midd's and highs often go to 3 o'clock. I use overall 22 nF coupling caps in the preamp and that promotes bit different break up and overall sound. Sounds fuller on lower volumes. Well Super Lead is about going loud and insane loud. In my amps I make them to sound good even at lower levels.
    Regarding to iron I was always Drake fan, though to be honest I think all original iron used is sounding good in Marshall amps.
    I actually often use an 1 uF bypass cap and I have no issues with it. Though in my amps my layout is completely different (less prone to noise) and all tubes are hand selected, burned in, tested, matched. My tube guy is awesome. Never got single tube that was bad from him. Only once one came in broke and he sent me another one for free disregarding that it was for sure broken in the transport. I pay more but I get quality stuff.
    Regarding the filtering one can see that early models where less filtered and later models were way stiffer. Well in some amps I am totally for less filtering but for this amplifier raw power is what is giving it it's character. So I would go with more filtering. That stiff feeling and fear of God inducing power and Volume levels is what Super Lead is all about.
    Though in lower power amplifiers I simulate that break up at lower power and I use 32 mF caps behind each node. With lower power and lower filtering I have found place where you can play the amplifier and not get kicked off the stage. Although even with 30-40 Watt tube amplifiers and 2x12 you will be hated by some band members and by venue PA man.
    So 1971 would be my favorite version regarding to schematics but I think I would mod that as well. And nope it is not because I was born in 1971 but because then they have had lot of good things going on for them. I would go with EL34 though. 6550 is good and all but it is USA version in my head. Real EU version should be with EL34's.
    Great video as always. I have learned few things as well. To be honest I am never sure what came what year precisely and often I need to look the amplifier in detail and see what was original and what was modified. I love seeing red marker over the soldering points although some people even make fake once.
    I love old amplifiers but nowadays most of them that I see where repaired and modified so much that I get pleasantly surprised when I see something in the original state and I feel bad when I have to change something that you can't find in original form or if you find it it might go bad in no time when exposed to high voltage.
    So I make true point to point boutique amplifiers, mostly with less power, built with new components with schematics that are modified to make it sound as old amplifiers with new type of parts with some improvement to noise levels and when possible in sound. I make clones of for example Bluesbreaker 18 Watt that people like but I change so many things that it sounds more like bigger brother JTM45 or even small Plexi. Or I make my own schematics where I get sound I want to have in the amplifier. This gives me freedom to choose when and where things happen. I make them sound good even at lower levels. Sure more Volume more sound but definitely not as some amplifiers that work great just at highest levels possible.
    Friend toured with Bluesbreaker 18 and 2x12 haven't had any need for louder amplifier. Sure it highly depends on the music you play and headroom needed. His rig was simple and he was not needing high headroom. Zero issues. Came back and made tons of Instagram videos with it just after the tour.
    He owns my top model as well. He loves it even more. But that 40 Watt amp is pretty wild and can get you in trouble.
    I have brought my personal amplifier to the guitar player that I have never met before to play a blues gig with it in Amsterdam. Some band members did not like it's volume disregarding that it was not on maximum. House sound engineer was looking kind off pissed as well. He have had no control and have had to give others more. Even with 2x12 peaks were really loud. Very dynamic amp. Anyhow pity but now days stages turn toi more and more quiet stages and people forget what does it mean to move some air with the guitar amplifier. To hear real singing electric guitar. To feel how guitar vibrates in your hands. At the end gig turned in jam session and few people played it. Most of them got surprised by touch and feel and dynamics.
    I bett with half stack or God forbid full stack and 100 Watt Super Lead most of todays generation young players would sh*t their pants. Would not be able to play it at all even if by some miracle you could find a place that allows you to use it as it was intended. Pity that world has changed so much. I wish everyone can hear at least once in his life rock sound of Les Paul into the Full stack Super Lead with Jimi Hendrix settings. It is something special.

    When in studio, a bright mic like an SM57 can be chosen. Or a darker mic like an MD421. Then there is console EQ. So many ways to shape the tone.

    Though some may disagree in this comments section, even though I enjoyed both amps, I'm really getting off on the Joe Pesci vibe of the '71; like that thing just took offense to you calling it funny, and it's going to stab you to death with a pen.     MK2 gets my vote as well. MK1 sounds good but MK2 has more clarity and seems like a substantial more amount of gain, more growl and bite. I like it!!!!!!!

    You can make proper comparison only if you use same valves set and will set all potentiometers with ohm meter to absolutely same position.
    Even than you still has too large capacitors and resistors tolerances.
    May be my words sound boring, but this is true.

    The circuits are very similar, so it's sort of surprising to hear such a difference. Mk.II is more distorted which might be where the bulk of the difference in sound is. That might come down to the 82k bias resistors instead of the earlier 220k bias resistors. I think that would make the phase inverter more likely to distort. Might be why some prefer the Mk.II for having "smooth" or "creamy" distortion?

    The reason Jimmy Pages live super lead tones Even In 72 before he had them modded for more headroom and switched to KT88 tubes is because his super lead is an early 69 and is from a transitional period where that particular circuit was only used for a 3 or 4 month Period which is why his Marshall tone can be hard to Pin down . People will try super leads from 70 71 or 72 but this still off. Royal amps was able to pin down the period of 69 that pages amp was made and found an original example and cloned it and they nailed the how the west was won tone . The uses G12H30s and a les paul with a gibson t top in rhe bridge and PAF in the neck and the tone was dead on the money. A T top from the 68 to 72 period in the bridge with a Paf in the neck is another key ingredient to his live sound from May 72 to 1980. Prior to may 72 he had the original PAf in the bridge and prior to February 72 he was using custom built Hiwatts which were like a cross between a Hiwatt DR103 and A Marshall super lead .
