I’d rather wait 2-3 days for a better part rather than warranty a part. It makes my blood boil.
The biggest issue is knowing which of their items are junk and which are good. Like a lot of things it depends on the individual part/tool from any brand.
True to that Jimmy 🔧🔧🔧🔧🔧
Fuel pump modules fuck no! Backing plates yeah I can work with that
I have been using more and more Dorman parts. Nothing on high labor pieces, but 1-2 hour jobs or less. Good results with the exception of LS oil pressure switch. I blew through 2 of them on my personal Silverado. Bought and OEM switch and got a refund for the 2 Dorman parts.
Ya... in the 40 years here, we all have had Dorman save our bacon on certain stuff, (mostly mechanical, and trim type of emergency's) I will not use Dorman electrical ie; window motors, like you mentioned. It does suck, because they really do have some awesome coverage.
Sometimes 9 year old Chinese kids usually don't build the best auto parts
Sometimes OEM is not available and Dorman is the only show in town.
I've heard a lot of bad news about Dorman electronic components. I don't have any personal experience with them. I haven't had any issues with their hardware or the hard parts I installed. Needed a rear diff cover for our GMC pickup. It came with new bolts. The window regulator assembly has been working for 5 years. The leaf spring shackle kit came with new hardware and fit like a glove.
I’ve had mixed results: sometimes they have the ONLY part available and you’re forced to get that. Case in point: Chevy Astro rear HVAC valve. Went through 3 of them breaking at the exact same place on the tee connection. Another example: chased an EGR valve issue for months on a 2009 Journey for EGR lift sensor code. Went so far as to replacing the connector with a pigtail, PCM pinouts, etc. because, „…but the valve is brand new!” Nope, faulty Dorman EGR valve. Replaced with a Standard valve, it’s still in there going on 4 years. Now it looks like a rebranded Dorman rear wiper on a 2000 Jeep Cherokee dies in about 8 months of use. Will I be able to return it since it’s an electrical part? Doubt it.Guess who’s the only one making ?!!?🙄
I've never had an issue running dorman parts. For more involved things, I'll go with OEM, but smaller stuff I have no problems with them.
Looks like you got bit by a shark!
I admire Dorman for being a champion of the aftermarket. Their finished product is hit or miss depending on what category (but experience could guide your choices). The OE fix line is pretty innovative. I know we rely on the OEM to breakdown for our livelihoods but half these cars out there are filled with junk parts from the factory.
Dorman makes decent generic parts zip ties, lugnuts, heatshrink, studs, power steering lines, transmission cooler lines, ect. If it takes electricity I would never buy from doorman under any circumstances. How ever Dorman at least tries to make a better part. They fail more than they succeed but they do try. Just replaced a coolant bottle on one of the trucks in the fleet I work on. The plastic nipples where the hoses connect on the OEM bottle were all plastic. The Dorman bottle was plastic but the nipples were reinforced with a mettle sleeve to try and give it some strength. One the same truck just installed the Dorman oil cooler/filter housing assembly for the 3.6l pentastar engine(any one who works on cars know who horrible of a design they are). The Dorman replacement is a defiant upgrade with better all metal construction but the gaskets will flatten over time and start leaking. the only difference is the Dorman is all metal and can be torn apart and resealed for cheaper but the labor is still there.
so in all Dorman is trying but they still have a long way to go
Dorman is like a box of chocolates... You never know what you are going to get.
Nope! Aftermarket parts are all 💩 nowadays. Only installing factory parts.
Had to replace the clockspring on a '15 wrangler. First one we ordered said Dorman on the box, wouldn't even plug in. The whole assembly kept coming apart trying to plug it in. Second one we ordered, apparently Napa I believe just slapped their sticker over the Dorman sticker on the box because it was a Dorman part in the box, and guess what, EXACT same issue. Wouldn't even plug in. Ended having to spend $250 more for an OEM part from the stealership. An exhaust manifold on a Chevy 2.4L. Casting wasn't correct so we tried a different one. AGAIN, Napa had slapped their sticker on over the Dorman sticker. Had the exact same casting issue. I seriously just wound up grinding the casting down some......my opinion, I NEVER NEVER use Don'tman or Dorkman (however you choose to say it) parts unless I just absolutely have no other options.
My shop like dorman lug nuts but not much else. We will usually use car quest for cheaper parts cause we haven't had much issue with them
I buy dealer electrical part unless I absolutely cannot get them. The funny part is the dealers tend to be same price or cheaper. I will say there are some dorman products like the timing guide plug for ecotech engines where the top guide bolt threads are gone or blend door repair kits that avoids removal of the dash but nobody knows because they don’t market them
I tell my customers if I use OEM I'll give you warranty otherwise no warranty.
I seem to find a lot of Dorman valve covers on the GM 1.4L turbo that other shops had recently put on and were leaking within months.
Those covers tend to leak because of a vacuum issue with the PCV valve in the intake manifold. Covers leaking again might not just be poor cover quality if the valve in the intake is popped.
Really? There are so many cases when Dorman is your ONLY choice. As if we have any choice in the matter.
I put a Dorman transmission pan on a 2004 Taurus, and didn’t like the fit. But then I put a vent valve on a 2010 Edge and it’s been good for a year. Same with a 2003 Explorer window regulator.
I say know if you value your time then you put the best part you can get but yes if it's the only thing available you got to go with it...
I just took out a 3.6 dorman old cooler last week. Never using dorman , they screwed us enough
But it's supposed to be "improved" and better than OEM 😂
@@LoneWolfSparty it was leaking around the o rings , back to the deawing board dorman. I have used some of their wondow regulators in a pinch , they work sometimes
I have used a few of the Dorman oil coolers on those. Still going strong as far as I know. I previously had Dorman o rings fail on the 3800 coolant bypass elbows. They literally melted away after a year. Supposedly the issue was resolved🙄
@@mph5896 these o rings did the same, it was like they almost melted away, all gooey
@@nickl3872 Yup. Same. I used to use silglide on o rings, but switched to either coolant or oil depending on system they are exposed to. It should not make a difference until it does🙄
Great video Mike. It's been hit and miss with Dorman with the shop but, we try to stick with OEM. We have found to on some of alot of after market parts just don't work with newer vehicles. So you got to do what you got to do if you do use After Market parts like Dorman.
I remember Dorman back in the day when they were a nut and bolt company. Look at it today; it has exploded into many categories. Like any aftermarket company, they do reverse engineering to reduce costs for the item. There is no real-world research and development (R&D). I've discovered that some of their products are more expensive than those from the dealer. I just noticed that Dorman has launched their 'Counting Men's' RUclips series. The people participating in this series come off as having little or no experience in the automotive industry. It looks like they're reading off a script that someone just handed to them. I would think the series is more geared towards retail stores for product information. This is a challenge in the automotive industry today - we have individuals with little or no experience in the field and tell us how great their product is, but when it's put to the test in the real world, the product fails. If you remember Cardone, history shows that if the customer has no confidence in the product, they're not going to buy. I don't think Dorman is going to have that problem anytime soon, especially with AutoZone as their biggest supporter.
The only thing Dorman I will use is there Window Regulators.
Only thing we use dorman at my dealer are lug nuts and drain plugs! Been burned way too many times.
I bought. Dorman ptu for a ford edge it was a ford oem with the ford logo ground off for half the price as the dealer win win
If it’s some of the Dorman repair/fix parts sure, if it’s any replacement parts no.
They make a nice oil and coolant feed and return hose kit for gm 1.4 turbos
Anything easy to replace just use cheap parts and if it’s hard to replace or very time consuming then use the best possible parts
Nope nope nope. Just pulled a dash because of a bad Dorman blend door actuator. And numerous Toyota air pump parts lasting less than 3 months
That's tough trusting a Dorman part on a dash pull🤣
Yeah, if you have to go aftermarket for Toyota, Aisin or Denso otherwise OEM only
@@mph5896 fortunately I wasn’t the original installer. I refuse to install Dorman parts under the dash. 😂😂
The only Dorman product I actually like is the pentastar all aluminum oil filter housing, it is better than the O.E. plastic housing.
I'd like to know how many miles/years have you put that dorman housing on? The oe plastic seems to last around 100k that I've seen.
The first one I converted was probably about 3 years ago. I have done 7 or 8 since then and some of them on cars that regularly return for maintenance. As far as total miles I don't know however I still have not had a failure with any of them and so far have never had to warranty a Dorman housing. I was at the Dealership since before the launch of the 3.6l (2001) until last year (2023) and I remember the first Gen housings leaking as early as 16k. Now I believe it has more to do with extreme temperatures and the different thermal expansion rates between the plastic oil housing and the aluminum block than it does with miles because most of the time we would have more failures during the cold seasons.
My personal van had the housing replaced before 100k (before I bought it) and I had to do it again around 165k, but that was before I knew about the Dorman housing and now I have one saved in a box for the next time mine fails. One thing with the Dorman kit is that it does not come assembled and you have to install the cooler and all the seals so there is an increased chance of human error on that end.
One other thing, the Dorman housing only takes the new style filter, so if you install one on a first gen (hollow tube filter element) then you need start using a new style filter (has long nub/nipple thing on the end).
I will hunt for oem over aftermarket any day. Unless I'm installing a racing part that is better than OEM
Over the years I've heard Dorman promise to do better multiple times and I've never seen the improvements. I've had purge valves that failed within the first few miles multiple times, exhaust manifolds that they admit were made from the wrong material that cracked in 1500 miles, and countless parts where the bolt patterns didn't line up correctly. There are much better companies out there that we can support, why support a company with a history of wasting our time and screwing us over? The price of the parts is never low enough when you have to do the job twice.
Don’tMan
Had good luck the last 6 months but before that it was a toss up.
When i HAVE TO use a Don'tman part because there's "no other options", that is my giving them another chance.....
I won’t take a chance on aftermarket parts for my own car. Never. Oem. Made in Japan.
After the supply chain ends, you get some tough choices.
My car needed a new plastic coolant reservoir. Mechanic tried an OEM part, but didn't like it because it was over 10 years old. Sure enough, the OEM plastic broke within the week. The Dorman part wasn't as well finished, but the plastic was newer and it worked.
i will NEVER use another Dorman 3.6 Pentastar engine oil cooler. be burned multiple times on them. and i use a digital torque wrench to tighten all of them
I’ve had no issues with the new metal ones they’ve came out with.
To be honest I don't really think you have a choice either way. Dorman is the only manufacturer for a gigantic swath of automotive aftermarket and replacement parts. In addition, while they do make some horribly low quality parts and that's definitely no lie, they are also the only manufacturer who's taking the OEM parts and actually upgrading their designs so they don't fail in the first place. The Chrysler 3.6 oil cooler is a pretty good example of this, where basically the best repair is to just use the dorman part. So I don't think dorman is going anywhere and I don't think we really have a choice.
Dorman=Do Over Man… Yesterday I changed the 3rd Dorman Manifold Tuning Valve on an 07 Chrysler 300. There is no OEM available.
Just frustrated trying to keep the customer happy. I personally am not a fan of changing parts over and over again.
I am a victim of Dorman junk. exhaust manifolds, oil cooler, trany cooler, power window assembly.
I stay away drom dorman electronic parts. If its just a hard part (no electronics) i usually dont have too many issues
Nope! I will never use Dorman parts ever again. I'd rather pay 300% more for OEM parts.
I don't get paid ANYTHING for warranty, my time is 100% unpaid to redo. Thus, I don't like Dorman. No electrical anything, ever. Exhaust manifolds usually fit, I'll use select suspension parts if no other option is available. Anything remotely complicated I won't waste my time. If OE isn't available, it's used parts, or ship the car.
We don’t allow Dorman to enter our shop. 👎
Dorman has always been just a part repacker....the quality can vary wildly...Beck Arnley is another repacker, they don't make anything except packaging.
Nope
How much did they pay you
