Forgive me as I'm not trying to sway anyone from doing what they want but that neckerchief in the wrong situation is a very handy handle to choke you. I don't think you put yourself into those situations. And the chances of it happening are slim to none but Id always feel vulnerable with something tied around my neck.

The first thing I remember about using a wood splitter was from my grandfather who used to say - never leave the ax resting on the ground or leaning up against a tree, always have it chopped into a block of wood - why- because if you leave it resting somewhere you will wet the bed at night.
We love that sage advice that only comes from Grandfathers.

@@WATTYATHINK I'm just ribbing ya. Totally get it. My grandfather was super specific about putting things back where you found them. As a kid I thought he was a dickhead. As an adult I realize exactly what he meant....lol. Life's too short to spend time looking for things.
I have one of these with both the heavy splitting axe head and the standard axe head, the interchangeability and the design where the head can be tightened with screws is awesome. since basically it will never come loose and need repaired. I split a lot of oak, walnut, and maple with it and it has never let me down.
how long have you had it and how much wood have you split with it? considering getting one, but have seen some reviews where people had the bolts snap off in the head. seems like it might be a weak point.
Do you use the log splitter or heavy universal axe from helko?
I have a Granfors Bruk splitting axe. I live in the Northeast (where we have real wood) and it works really well. Cody maybe you can do a comparison video between the high tier splitting axes.
I have a maul, but after buying it I had to re-profile it so I could deal with white & red oak, maple and other hardwoods out here on the east coast.
The btu's out of the hardwoods that grow all around here are a blessing with the price of oil this winter.
Black locust grows like dandelions around here and it's some of the best firewood in my opinion

I was living in Virginia 10 years ago, winter was coming and I had broken my leg. I had a 3.5 lb axe and split a Truck load of oak and other hard woods from a wheel chair. I'm 6'6 270 and was hitting with every once off force I could from a sitting position...whew lots of fun, you should try it😉😁
We have primarily white oak, red oak, maple and some ash I much prefer the log splitter ( but I’m 65 yrs old) but I have three boys that would sooner hand split it with my splitting axes I always went by the motto “ work smarter not harder” here in PA.
I had a giant maple cut down over the summer. Just finished splitting it up last weekend. That single tree gave me over 6 cords of firewood

I like splitting axes for small rounds and such but living on the east coast with large hardwoods I could never be without my splitting maul. I have tried multiple splitting axes and they all get stuck and I end up spending more time freeing the axe than splitting wood. My maul never gets stuck haha. But if I was splitting soft woods 100% I bet the splitting axe would be perfect especially out west. I still keep mine around and bust a few "easy" pieces with them cuz I enjoy the swing and I just love axes haha.

When I lived in the rockies of Colorado I heated 100% with wood and only had aspen and pine no hardwood anywhere close. That was normal around there. Now that I moved to indiana and also heat 100% with wood I have all hardwood it's all about location. I understand your pine situation
I’m heating with aspen right now, I got about a cord and a half I’m using before it gets really cold.
I got to say aspen burns really clean. I check my chimney every week and barely any buildup since I’ve been burning this aspen. I’m impressed with it.

Haha good to see another axe video from you mate you kept me hanging that whole time waiting for a swing!!!! I like the comment about burning what you have the reason we have so many axe patterns world wide is due to the fact that axes are geographic, a specific pattern for a specific type of wood looking forward to seeing this thing in action.
That may work well on your softwoods but I don't think it'd last with our hard woods
I have a Fiskars splitting maul. I know you are not a fan of the non-replacable plastic handle, but its extremely tough... The head design, however, is questionable. Its highly effective at splitting, and I love it.. however, because of its concave profile, it seems to catch the wood halfway in while splitting and will twist the head and handle and will sometimes wrench your wrist.
Has anyone else experienced this? What would you recommend in the sub-$100 splitting axe/maul price range?
Haven't experienced any twisting but it's hard to get a comparable splitting axe for the price. I've ran mine over with a skid steer and showed no signs of damage. Can leave outside for years without water and the elements destroying the handle.
You should try out a Fiskars X27 splitting axe from Finland (life time warranty) 👍

I thought the point of not burning Conifer trees like pines, was because of the creosote that builds up from burning their sap. Then the creosote can catch your chimney on fire.
Yes, this is a problem for sure (SC Alaska here stuck with Sitka Spruce for 80% of our firewood) so proper cleaning of your stove pipe is critical. Don't skimp on the maintenance!
If your stove is really efficient and burns all the gases, creosote is less of an issue. At least that is what another RUclipsr who modified his stove said.
@@joshuamason1867 did he modify the stove be a forced air, or maybe a rocket stove type? Could you let me know their name so I can do some research? Thanks
@@BlackHoleForge the channel is Double M Innovations. The way he explained it is that it works similar to a rocket stove. He said it needs to be stoked more often then normal because you can't restrict the airflow without defeating what your trying to accomplish.

we actually have a lot of poplar trees here (12btu) ... aka GOPHER wood... go-PH-er some wood. I like it in fall and spring when you don't want to sweat every one out of the house, but don't want to turn on the furnace either.
May have to pick one up! I plan on getting a wood stove for my home.
Is yours the universal axe or the log splitter. On the Amazon link it seems the log splitter and the one you have are different heads.
Hi Cody, love your vids! I was wondering if you could do a review on the Adler Rheinland hatchet or any of the Adler lineup for that matter. I picked one up recently for a great deal but I don't really see many reviews or atleast videos on them. The one I got seems good quality but i haven't decided if I should keep it or return it.

Wow that is one unusual splitting axe!
My splitting axe is a 8 inch plumb felling head fitted to a double bit handle. Giving it a longer and straight profile that gives a more accurate and controlled swing into a vertical swing. The leverage gives a much harder hit at waist level then a curved handle. Stay frosty sir.
Does the arch in the handle also ad lag to the swing and create more power? Much like how a golf club works or jai alai wicker cesta ?

Hickory makes good firewood too. Sometimes you can see sparks come off of it from a chainsaw. Tough stuff, Very hard and dense.
I’ve only ever burn red and white oak in wood stove but it’s what I got

Never used a splitting axe. We use splitting mails, known among NC country folk as a go-devil. No idea how it got it's name, but back in the day I split a lot of nice red oak Sith one. Nothing like "bustin wood" with nice seasoned, straight grain red oak. But those knots and crotch pieces can whip a man!

Somewhat unrelated to this video…but have you looked into Chris Reeve knives? I feel like they would be a perfect fit for you. Their machining is on a level that nobody else in the industry can match. Not to mention they’re made in Idaho. Pick up an Umnumzaan, they cost just a little more than your shirt 😂

I have split eastern White & Red oak my entire life. Tough , tough wood to split. Wedges & malls are the norm.

I consider Oak one of the easier types of hardwood in my area to split. In my area we have like 90% Red/White Oak, Shagbark Hickory, Black Cherry and several different species of Elm. Then some random others thrown in there like Hackberry and Hawthorn. Cherry splits pretty nicely but Oak is easy compared to Hickory or Elm
@@commonsence8223 White Oak isn't very hard to split if you use a splitting axe. Wouldn't wanna try it with a maul though
@@AnarchAngel1 I had one it was all twisted and tight, I did use a big maul, it took awhile but I got it. White oak is very scarce in my log loads.

I bought this axe a month ago and used it for 8 hours. The end of the handle started to split and only got worse. I think the problem is that a hole is drilled too close to the end. the handle should extend beyond the metal sheath and be banded. I sent mine back. So disappointed because this is a piece of artwork.
You mentioned 8 pounds but I’m not sure you were referring to the Helko… Can you take the Helko axe head off the handle and weigh all the parts including the bolts and tell us how much it weighs?

this is exactly how i feel whenever I'm futzing around with German engineering. Everything has a particular way of being done/undone so it remains PERFECT every time. So if it isn't immediately obvious, just go find instructions the before you break something. They don't really do coincidences. It's either simple or deliberate.

Believe it or not, THREE Gransfors Bruks Large splitting ax heads have come off. They don’t even replace them for me anymore. Bad ax.
Better designs for attaching the head have been LONG overdue!

He was 8, and used the money to buy his first shotgun.
But that’s how they made southeastern men back then.
He and his brother always used a standard double bit axe to split firewood. Which was almost always oak or hickory.
