  • At the Northern Nevada Correctional Facility, prison inmates train wild mustangs to become domesticated horses. Using modern gentle-taming methods, inmates are taught proper horsemanship and how to ride and care for the animals. Once trained, the horses are auctioned off to the public and have been used by local and federal agencies. Head horse trainer Hank Curry has been with the program for more than 15 years and has witnessed firsthand the program’s rehabilitative power.

    I spent 6 yrs training horses under Hank Curry while I served a 10 year sentence. What you just seen is truly the most amazing program that any could imagine. I have personally been saved by the horses and this program. I could fill up hours with stories of Hank and this program. I have been out 7 years and own my own business and started a family and I can honestly tell you it’s because of what I learned in this program. This is what rehabilitation is really all about, nothing easy and when you get it, you respect it and hold on to it

      I would try to go a little more far:people who are good at this, interested,.. and so on. I would pay them 6 month the bills of his/her most wanted horse and give them a chance to buy their favorite horse. I am sure this would help a lot. Taking care for somebody or something else helps and the chance to buy their favorite one is a good motivation, too. I bet 30 till 50 %would have a better start outside

      It’s a win win win program for sure! True rehabilitation,. Can I ask, were you a horse person before you were an inmate? And, are you able to spend time with horses now?

      Do you possibly know anyways to build your horsemanship, to a point you would be able to train one of these mustangs? For instance, is mustang training for the few 15+ years experienced people, or is anybody able to learn how to train these horses?

    Happy to see he's still around.

    I love to see prisons that have programs to actually rehabilitate, not just lock people up, and do nothing! I'm glad to see more, and more prisons realizing that's the only way to make a difference in someone's life. I wonder what kinds of programs they offer women? Are there any? Each time I've seen the cat, dog, and now horse program, it's only with male inmates.

    Beautiful surroundings! Animals don't judge people like we do, energy is all they care about and the bond created between human and horse is strong and spiritual, it teaches us something about ourselves. This is an excellent rehabilitation program, many non-convicts would benefit of this as well. Good stuff

    its unfortunate to say that this is an inspirational idea because there should be more programs like this. a convict maybe guilty of a crime but they are most definitely still a capable human being.

    Horses are the most healing of all animals. We need programs like this in all prisons and also in the inner cities. If we had programs like this and horse facilities in the cities at low cost, we would have a 50 to 90 % drop in crime and save money on prisons and inmate upkeep. Some things in life are worth the investment.

    It's my absolute dream to live in the desert and have a mustang to go on trails with. Definitely for my first horse, I plan on getting a trained mustang, and I've looked at the inmate trained mustang catalog, and there are some really nice ones for riders of all levels. I definitely want my horse to come from here. And maybe with more experience I can eventually adopt a wild mustang.

      To control the wild population from getting any larger the Fish and Game department rounds up a lot of wilds horses each year to tame and use/ adopt out.

    • @tportillo3993
      @tportillo3993 6 лет назад

      Round ups each year, to "control" wild horses, actually quite sad, horses ripped from there bands, mothers from their yearlings, stallions from their mares, heard screaming for eachother, all for profit, and because ranchers want the land for themselves, disgusting.

    • @bedtimeat8
      @bedtimeat8 5 лет назад +3

      Horses are an invasive species of course they need to be controlled. There are very few predators that could naturally make an impact on the population, and they use resources that native species need.

  • @ieuanhunt552
    @ieuanhunt552 7 лет назад +6

    There are technically no wild horses in The Americas. They are all feral. The difference is that they used to be domesticated and escaped into the wild through various means. Whereas true wild horses have never been domesticated. As far as I know the only truly wild horses are in Mongolia

    • @brendenlindley6916
      @brendenlindley6916 6 лет назад +1

      Fucking Bullshit wild horses are in America not fucking. A wild horse in Mongolia is probably a horse that got away from a farm for a few days go back to fucking Mongolia and see your real wild horses

    • @bedtimeat8
      @bedtimeat8 5 лет назад +1

      Brenden horses have not been a native animal in America since the last ice age. There is only one species of wild horse the Przewalski's horse that is native to Mongolia, and has never been domesticated. One of the reasons why it is important to make the distinction between wild (an animal that occurs naturally) and feral (a domestic species living without human intervention) is that many feral animals have a negative impact on the environment. We are responsible for moving them to habitats that cannot accommodate them easily. Horses in particular create erosion problems and damage native grasses with their hard hooves.

  • @RoninMilli
    @RoninMilli 4 года назад +1

    YES thank you for saying working with horses takes Guts. People assume its a girly thing to do. Ride and work with horses and ponies. It takes super guts to work with an animal that chooses not to kill you with one kick. I promise you thats all it can take to kill you. A woman worker was found unconscious in a pasture from a kick to the head from a domesticated horse let alone a wild one. Had to be put into a medical coma to save her life.
