- At the Northern Nevada Correctional Facility, prison inmates train wild mustangs to become domesticated horses. Using modern gentle-taming methods, inmates are taught proper horsemanship and how to ride and care for the animals. Once trained, the horses are auctioned off to the public and have been used by local and federal agencies. Head horse trainer Hank Curry has been with the program for more than 15 years and has witnessed firsthand the program’s rehabilitative power.

I spent 6 yrs training horses under Hank Curry while I served a 10 year sentence. What you just seen is truly the most amazing program that any could imagine. I have personally been saved by the horses and this program. I could fill up hours with stories of Hank and this program. I have been out 7 years and own my own business and started a family and I can honestly tell you it’s because of what I learned in this program. This is what rehabilitation is really all about, nothing easy and when you get it, you respect it and hold on to it
I would try to go a little more far:people who are good at this, interested,.. and so on. I would pay them 6 month the bills of his/her most wanted horse and give them a chance to buy their favorite horse. I am sure this would help a lot. Taking care for somebody or something else helps and the chance to buy their favorite one is a good motivation, too. I bet 30 till 50 %would have a better start outside
It’s a win win win program for sure! True rehabilitation,. Can I ask, were you a horse person before you were an inmate? And, are you able to spend time with horses now?
Do you possibly know anyways to build your horsemanship, to a point you would be able to train one of these mustangs? For instance, is mustang training for the few 15+ years experienced people, or is anybody able to learn how to train these horses?
I'm not crying, you guys are😭
Well done Chris !!! Happy to hear it !!! ❤️🐴
The amount of jobs that convicts are able to and the amount you see on this channel is honestly inspiring
love these new correctional ideas
Me too
It's actually been around for several prisons for quite some time with amazing results for the humans more than the horses.
it change the tone of normal prison time... from violence to human animal bond ! their is a rescue sancturary for exotic animal in a prison too
i used to break wild horses at my old ranch and i met some of these guys. they are all lovely and they care so much about their mustang. ive seen some guys get so much better just because of it. thanks to you guys for showing it!
I was in that program. Hank's a great guy. It's funny how much you can learn from a guy that only speaks in common sense terms. And really only when he needs to.
Happy to see he's still around.
There's alot of parallels between the horses and inmates, truly inspiring. I believe this is how we teach people there's good in the world.
ironic how the police use horses trained by convicts
Sarah Choi positive chain-loop that helps to break out of negative chain-loop
Sarah Choi maybe that cop arrested the trainers
That is because cops have no morals
I wonder if they can train the horses. The cops take them trained and gentle. How about training them??
Excellent work. Way to give these guys a second chance. Trust is something we all yearn to have and once it's broken once it's difficult to piece it up.
I love this type of thing, horses saved my life from ending up in prisons, nice to see horses can also be good for people who already misguided,a bond with a horse is the best gift to have
Good job guys🧡♥️🧡♥️🧡
I love to see prisons that have programs to actually rehabilitate, not just lock people up, and do nothing! I'm glad to see more, and more prisons realizing that's the only way to make a difference in someone's life. I wonder what kinds of programs they offer women? Are there any? Each time I've seen the cat, dog, and now horse program, it's only with male inmates.
There's plenty of programs for women as well. I've seen some for training dogs and horses
It would be a great thing for female prisons, most of the equine industry is women.
This needs to be a full reality tv series. I find it fascinating.
Beautiful surroundings! Animals don't judge people like we do, energy is all they care about and the bond created between human and horse is strong and spiritual, it teaches us something about ourselves. This is an excellent rehabilitation program, many non-convicts would benefit of this as well. Good stuff
Faith in humanity restored!! This is the best thing I have seen in a long time!! What a great organization. Makin cowboys outta criminals, hot damn
its unfortunate to say that this is an inspirational idea because there should be more programs like this. a convict maybe guilty of a crime but they are most definitely still a capable human being.
Horses are the most healing of all animals. We need programs like this in all prisons and also in the inner cities. If we had programs like this and horse facilities in the cities at low cost, we would have a 50 to 90 % drop in crime and save money on prisons and inmate upkeep. Some things in life are worth the investment.
Every prison in the US should adopt this program
Ive watched the movie on netflix amd i was so amazed about their horse training and bonding with the wild horses
Rehabilitation not incarceration! yes america you're finally getting it.
String Emil this!!!!!
Amazing program it comes full circle
This is such a good idea! So inspiring!!
no more tough on crime, we need more of this and more humane ways for people
holyfuck those background mountain is amazing
It's my absolute dream to live in the desert and have a mustang to go on trails with. Definitely for my first horse, I plan on getting a trained mustang, and I've looked at the inmate trained mustang catalog, and there are some really nice ones for riders of all levels. I definitely want my horse to come from here. And maybe with more experience I can eventually adopt a wild mustang.
Love this program!!!
It's the best thing that I have been through doing time
Your channel is just amazing
Horses have a way to humble us
What are the odds of them riding of into the sunset?
john son of Morris well you'd have to make them hop a 6 foot fence and escape from prison :/
I think they pick people who are the least likely to try and escape.
Excellent work 👍👍👍👍👍
I love horses, this video makes me want to adopt a horse! I wish we could ride horses instead of cars sometimes
I wanna try this. I just hope it is as calm as falcon calling and camel domesticating
May we always have wild mustangs ❤
How cool!
what a great idea.
in essence, its the wild teaching the wild.
win win :)
If more prisons had things like this the prison just makes you a better prisoner wouldn't exist
What's the music used in the video? Loved how it complimented the story :D
My home state. People don't realize there is more to Nevada rather than Las Vegas!
but if the convicts are rehabilitated how will the prison owners make money if prisons are getting shut down????
It's me Daniel from India.
Somebody please help me to get the type of saddle as shown in the vedio.... I want it..by any how....
It's a western saddle I imagine not sure how the ordering goes in India
It Works!
hello
oh my, cute thinking an inmate made such a nice braid in that pony's tail..
How do they just "take wild horses" though? I'd understand if it was lost and they couldn't find its herd but i can't imagine that would happen often.
To control the wild population from getting any larger the Fish and Game department rounds up a lot of wilds horses each year to tame and use/ adopt out.
Round ups each year, to "control" wild horses, actually quite sad, horses ripped from there bands, mothers from their yearlings, stallions from their mares, heard screaming for eachother, all for profit, and because ranchers want the land for themselves, disgusting.
Horses are an invasive species of course they need to be controlled. There are very few predators that could naturally make an impact on the population, and they use resources that native species need.
There are technically no wild horses in The Americas. They are all feral. The difference is that they used to be domesticated and escaped into the wild through various means. Whereas true wild horses have never been domesticated. As far as I know the only truly wild horses are in Mongolia
Fucking Bullshit wild horses are in America not fucking. A wild horse in Mongolia is probably a horse that got away from a farm for a few days go back to fucking Mongolia and see your real wild horses
Brenden horses have not been a native animal in America since the last ice age. There is only one species of wild horse the Przewalski's horse that is native to Mongolia, and has never been domesticated. One of the reasons why it is important to make the distinction between wild (an animal that occurs naturally) and feral (a domestic species living without human intervention) is that many feral animals have a negative impact on the environment. We are responsible for moving them to habitats that cannot accommodate them easily. Horses in particular create erosion problems and damage native grasses with their hard hooves.
YES thank you for saying working with horses takes Guts. People assume its a girly thing to do. Ride and work with horses and ponies. It takes super guts to work with an animal that chooses not to kill you with one kick. I promise you thats all it can take to kill you. A woman worker was found unconscious in a pasture from a kick to the head from a domesticated horse let alone a wild one. Had to be put into a medical coma to save her life.
There was a similar program here in Northeast california, but now it's gone....
TO COOL!!!!!!!!!
Lol I wanna go to prison now
It must be sad to let them go, but at the same time they get new horses so that's good.
I want to do this. I wish they had programs for non convicts.
You can learn to train horses then the mustangs ☺️
this is fucking genius
Rehabilitation not punishment. That's how you break the horrid recidivism rate in the US.
the mountains tho
My last name is curry
It's like Avatar!.!.!.!.!.!.......
did they get convicted of crashing into crowds in mustangs
Why the long face?
Poor wild horses
Hank Curry we have the wild horse DNA on mustang quarter toroborough arab . We wonder if your organisation wanna start share own horses for familys in Sweden and in USA with USA and Sweden
great, now get back to making my license plates!!
Alika Ostermiller pOPTROPICA OMG
arielle pham Don't inmates make license plates in real life also?
Too bad these mustangs will be eaten by brave and powerful Camaros.
That's why it's a mistake to stop it when somebody gets out. They should give everybody the chance to work and buy their faforite horse and I think crime will go down
4th like 82th view
Leave them alone they belongs in the wild
if one of the inmates doesn't another, just cut the horse head and put it in his bed. Godfather style
