I was lucky enough to earn the respect and belief of coil, and they - along with stevo, foetus, swans and others - okayed me becoming label manager at k422 in 1985; it was part of some bizzare, which was also home to test department, einsturzende neubauten, cabaret voltaire, the the and soft cell/marc almond. Whilst at the time of this documentary, you could count the record sales of those featured on the fingers of one hand, i always told them that what they were doing would eventually be seen for what it is, genius...
RIP coil, man they really pushed stuff forward. I feel groups like these are pushing music to its limits even now with their old material. (Emphasis on old) It’s really incredible. They all live on! Seriously amazing stuff
Back in the day with my cassette Walkman I would blast Foetus through the headphones and scream along to his masterpieces. I know all of Jim's lyrics by heart. This was around 1987. A friend had introduced me to all of these groups on this video as well as Death In June, Psychic TV, Sol Invictus, Nurse With Wound, The Legendary Pink Dots, Severed Heads, Controlled Bleeding, Borghesia, etc, etc. Many thanks to him. And he knows this! Many people may think these artists on the video are pretentious, and they may be. But rightly so. They were able to create and express themselves freely. Not in it for the money. For real. My favorite period of modern music.
Yes some if seems pretentious now, but I find what John Balance said inspiring. It explains a lot; "...take the surrealists - what they were dealing with was the subconscious on a personal level and expanding it and just plummeting the depths of it. ... and that's just a very simple act which takes a huge amount of effort"
I think because they are shooting for some higher minded / transgressive art and music it is easy to think of them that way. But are they any more broken than Brian Jones or Keith Moon or the average factory worker? Nothing scares me more than the notion of "normal" people.
21:56 So innocent , eerie too in a way . What a perfect example of " be careful what you wish for " . If this version of Jhonn only knew what his abstractions would be when turned reality ...
The less you have the better off you are.. there is no hiding when you only have a cheap drum machine, a shitty dynamic, a 4 track tape recorder & your sister's Casio knock-off keyboard.. It's possible if you have talent & something new to tell the world.. Appreciate the upload!
Neubauten's first album Kalte Sterne was made with very little & many of it's songs sound so massive & out of this world. Their song Schwarz is made with a keyboard some metal objects & Blixa's voice. I don't hear any other ingredients in this song.
7:53 ...lol @ Mr.LittleDUKnow; Coming to a field near you! Millions, dropping guards (and xtc!), dancing all night to faceless machine noise and gaining insight via "shallow pleasure, petty enjoyment the promise of dancing the night away etc. etc." and spawning a wave of DIY creativity across the face of the world.
Tibet makes great Music, but God does he act like a idealistic, pretentious hypocrite in this. Thirlwell and Coil had the right idea, especially with Thirlwell wanting to mould the culture around him that he despised, not run away. EDIT: I think my original comment was a bit harsh and that Tibet raises a few good points, but he still acts incredibly pretentious in this
I feel like his observations are still relevant in 2024. In contrast with “our culture is trash”, which is just rather obvious and shallow. People were already saying that in the 1920s, anyway.
I suppose they had to say something to justify the music or sounds (or whatever you want to call it!) they were making, when they had a camera pointing at their face! I just love it cos it's crazy mad and wild eyed and inventive when yer bored with everyone sounding the bloody same like now!!!!
We *all* copped John Balance’s look in the late 80’s, he was the best looking and most dangerous character in this scene, with the best hair and best lyrics, and in New York City most of us into this music had no place to go except if you just wanted to violate the suburban Morrissey & Depeche fans. We were too violent for the goths and too weird for the hardcore scene. No one knew what to do with industrial in the 80’s. Swans were a common love amongst us all and they & Foetus were local. Trent was deep into Coil back then. He planned to work with Coil as far back as 1991, after he had some success. I met him after a NIN show n Newark, NJ in 1989 and he explained his musical & artistic vision and I was simultaneously jealous and filled with admiration for him. Trent’s roots are pure.
I'm not sold on the 'cute' bit. I think they all desperately wish that they had been the originator of the banging stuff with hammers and power tools, but they aren't, Einstürzenden Neubauten are. But apart from that its interesting to me why Current 93 chose the name and who and how much are they into it?
The 93 Current was associated with Aleister Crowley's magick. Allegedly. According to David Tibet. If you were stuck for a name in those days, Crowley was always handy, as was Burroughs. With regards to Neubauten, they were only continuing a tradition going back to Metzge'sr Auto-Destruction, Hermann Nisch's Aktivists, the Fluxus movement, early AMM and John Cage
@Foxiepaws ACAnderson: Current 93 is a reference to the 93rd current in Crowley’s Book Of the Law. David Tibet was a Thelemite when he started Current 93, so his “street cred” is up to snuff, since that’s what you’re questioning. All of these bands were contemporaries of Einstüerzende Neubauten and were forging their own paths. The exception, in my opinion, is Test Dept, who are the ones featured the most in this video, they’re shown performing live with Neubauten-esque sound sources. I agree that they borrowed a little too heavily from Neubauten, and that always bothered me as well. It doesn’t matter what their artistic intent or direct influences were; in those times, in the context of the European underground, Einstüerzende Neubauten did it first, and Test Dept always came off as imitators. IMHO, they would have been a much bigger band if they’d tried a more original direction.
What a bunch of pretentious narcissists. They were just kids i know... but looking back on this whole Industrial era material has been truly truly truly just super cringy. The lowkey fash's undertones don't help at all ... xS
Tibet coming straight back from india after talking himself up that hard is one of the funniest things ive ever seen, the hood and glasses make it even better. Then theres thepathetic excuse 'yeah i couldnt stand it cause it was, erm, full of bloody hippies'. Clearly just bottled it. sheer comedy.

Agree absolutely
That's precisely what happened with me in 1987. I've been a major fan ever since!
cool
Many thanks to this comment I’ve just discovered a load of new band and many many hours of listening, thank you !!!
At the very least, they're not taking selfies.
Foetus' description of the west and how we do trash so good because we love and embrace it .. could not have been any more spot on 😄

John sleazy Steven none of them were pretentious in later life .... they literally make abstract musick..
Holy crap, footage of Peter working on his Fairlight!!!
The Current 93 performance reminded me of a mellower version of Whitehouse. Without the spouting beers.
Some very broken but brilliant people here. So fascinating to see.
@AM-uh7mv Oh, I know - I had to crack some myself!

I'm feeling transcendent✨I feel a poem coming up💫😌
I always thought of young David Tibet as the least likable person in the world, but this: 38:24 is pure comedy 101, absolutely hilarious. Great guy!
thank you so much for this upload. I'll sample this a lot
Ah such a nice trip down memory lane. Love these bands. Thanx for this
Thanks for the upload 😊
Thank You!

Amazing how many novel and interesting ideas each one of them gave about music, civilization, culture, and society in general ❤❤❤
What’s the song @35:10 (when they’re in the studio w the computer)

Everyone is so young and pretentious here, it's cute.
Says the old and smug superior one.
Michael Tetrault I'm neither.

Basically, they all need Tibet's chosen treatment, i.e. a good kicking. Current and Coil did produce some classics though by the mid/late nineties.

Great music and most artists here but you can't imagine David Tibet sticking a clown wig on. He should relax a tad.
