When I was installing the new baskets I thought I was actually losing my mind. I knew the muds had to come off, but was seriously doubting myself that the new ones would go on. BD should be giving you royalties on these baskets!!!!
Suggestion to use a heat gun was awesome, thanks! I didn't have one, but I used a hair dryer; I stuck the pole points with the baskets wedged onto'em -- but not yet fully seated --into the end of the hair dryer and put a towel over the entire thing. Left it running for almost an hour (baskets ended up very soft, definitely didn't need that long), and the baskets went from "impossible to put on" to "pushed right on" (which probably wasn't great either, given that they're ostensibly screw-on). Now that the baskets have cooled, they feel solidly attached. I used Black Diamond Traverse Pro with stock baskets.
THANK YOU! I've been holding off on buying these since there's no documentation on compatibility or how to attach them. Seems like a huge oversight in the documentation department.
Thanks so much! Found your RUclips after struggling to get these on. A blast from a hair dryer on each basket for a minute or so along with a bit of elbow grease and I was able to get them to snap on. Shame on Black Diamond for such a poor design and for not including adequate instructions.
Had the same issue, for such high quality poles it is a surprisingly poorly designed basket mechanism. Thanks for the video, the heating makes it manageable.
Thank you!! I've lost 3 baskets this year. Goggled "how to keep baskets on your trekking poles" and this was my first search result. Problem solved! :)
Having to go through all than on a new product is idiotic. Thanks for the video though. I've got a pair on order and now I know what I'll likely have to deal with.
Lol. I used mine with one basket missing and one basket beneath the mud guard on top for five years. Finally got round to replacing the missing one and thought I'd figure out how to do it.
I figured that heat gun might be overkill, so instead I used a few drops of bike chain lube. When having it lubricated it was much easier to install the powder basket and there's no need for a heat gun. It worked fine both on a set of new Trail Sport poles as well as on a 6 year old pair of Trail Sport with very worn and damaged plastic.
Good tip! I’ll try that this upcoming winter. I’ve seen people use hairspray in similar fashion before, the advantage being that hair spray is slippery wet, sticky when dry, and easily washed off.
They’re pretty light weight. I would just leave them on personally, but they’re not required, if you don’t like them there’s no reason you can’t use the poles without them.
@@daedalus9042 Good advice. Leaving them on kinda protects the threads from damage as well. I got mine at REI . The price read, $59.99 but when they rang it up...$79.99 so they gave me 25% off even though they should have honored the lower price. I love REI so I didn’t make a big fuss.
@@joemusic2882 lol that’s funny. When I went to buy mine I brought a coupon that I didn’t realize wasn’t valid. REI still honored the coupon for the poles. Great customer service.
I wish I knew this before I returned my poles. I had the same issues and was trying to justify the $125 price tag. There’s also nothing in the directions that said anything about installing the baskets.

THANK YOU!! I KNEW there had to be a simple solution to installing those baskets, but I was too simple to figure it out.
It’s simple, but took me a while to figure it out 😅

Thanks man, couldn’t figure it out and I almost lost both on my first day splitboarding. Now it’s locked in, blessings.
Glad I could help!
Thank you! I lost two snow baskets this past weekend up on Mt. Hood which made for horrible trekking.
Glad it helped!

Thanks for the video. I thought I was going to ruin my brand new set of poles. Now I've got it working. Crazy that it is this difficult to do.
Not only is it difficult, it’s also poorly documented! 😓

Thanks for the info, man. I was almost dissapointed that i got the wrong powder plates and thats why they couldn't fit normally.

Yes, in the instruction… it says to boil the tips to 100c and pull off with pliers. I’m new to hiking and your video helped explain why. Thanks!!!
That’s just for the tips though, not the baskets. Happy hiking 🙂
Thanks! I didnt have a heat gun so i just used a dab of dishsoap on the threads and that helped tremendously.
Thanks for posting… used my hair dryer and worked like a charm!!!
Thank you so much for making this video! So helpful!

Thanks for watching and commenting. I do like the poles, but I definitely think they could have designed the basket system better.

Oh my gosh. This video was a life saver!
Glad it helped! Happy hikes!
🤔 wait….
Thanks a lot for your guide. I was able to put those baskets using my wife hairdryer :) Without it i was not able to screw them on at all!

Very informative. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Many thanks bro. Black diamond need to pay you for making them look good.
Question: The mud baskets that come with these poles, should they always stay on even if I don’t hike through mud or wet weather?
They’re pretty light weight. I would just leave them on personally, but they’re not required, if you don’t like them there’s no reason you can’t use the poles without them.

Are the baskets supposed to be able to spin freely after you threaded them all the way on? I’ve never had a ski pole like that.
you can spin them. They're somewhat tight so don't just spin loosely, but they can be rotated by hand.
Thank you, I was out of swear words trying to get basket on
Thanks man, was about to call BD tech support and felt really stupid.
Very helpful. Thanks.
Thanks buddy! It isn’t as obvious as you think!
So do ANT of you guys here know if the blackdimond trekking poles can be used for skiing with the snow basket?
How do you take them off?
Thank you!
THANK YOU
LIFESAVER
Glad it helped!
tnx rly usefull
Thank you, worked great. Very very poor design if you can not put the baskets on without tools.
You do realize you are just melting the glue that’s holding the actual tip onto the pole, right?
Mine screw on. Not hard.
