@@belcarra yeah I figured it was simply a stain or something like that but this is the first video I've seen from this channel and I wanted to be dramatic
Well, the only logical answer would be to minimize your downstrokes as much as possible so that you come back up as soon as you've hit the string, but the precision it requires is James Hetfield-like and let's be honest... Nobody does it quite as well as him!
Idea #1) I heard Hetfield uses three fingers to hold the pick, thumb index & middle finger & picks in a certain area that is the most comfortable for his right hand. I've tried it here & there but it only feels good in short bursts. Idea #2) Try different picks. I "feel" like heavy picks slow me down & lighter ones help with the speed. I'm referring to weight when I say heavy & light, A thick nylon pick seems to be heavier to me than lets says a Ultex pick. Of course, only try stiff picks. Idea #3) Try using more of a feathering motion to pick the string to minimize the amount of time between each note.
Yh unlike alternate I personally find it faster and easier to keep progressing holding the pick kinda flat / parallel to the strings or more in a upward pick slant.
I've never been great at alt-picking and always down picked. I mainly play metal and this actually helped down the line as it gives riffs that extra bite that alt can't replicate. Met Mick from Slipknot at Sonisphere a few years ago in England and discussed down picking with him since it's pretty much all he uses. Said that he was similar when starting out that he couldn't grasp alt-picking, so just continued to downpick and it obviously worked for him. It's a great technique if you can get it right. It's all in the wrist, though. My arm tends to ache if you rely on it.
What's the best technique for fast down-picking? A. Rotating the wrist. B Rotating the wrist minimally with a bit of thumb & forefinger twitch (economy of movement). C. Locking your wrist and hand and moving with a forearm spasm. D. Locking your hand, wrist and forearm and initiate the movement from where your shoulder meets your arm with a little bit of Lat muscle. E. Other?.
I know, I've said it multiple times but I love the fact, your sound is coming straight from the amp. Not some premixed sound, from the computer. It really shows how good of a guitarist you are! 🙌🙏👏🤘
Nice man. I need to try that one upstroke and see how fast I can go. I can do 240 pretty clean, 250 starts to get a bit sloppy and around 260 is starts to fall apart. A lot of times when people see me downpick they'll say something like "what the hell dude, how are you so good at that?" I always thought that I just sucked because when I would learn something that was supposed to be alternate picked, I would downpick instead because I found it easier for me, and I hated it, and still kind of do, because things that are just too fast to be downpicked I'll have a hard time with, because I still suck at alternate picking, even after practicing it a lot. Downpicking is like muscle memory for my hand now, it just wants to do that. When I started playing guitarI always downpicked everything when I started playing guitar, and never worked on alternate picking for years.. I remember when I learned Master of Puppets it was really easy for me, and when I started to hear that people actually thought fast downpicking was a good skill, it boosted my self esteem quite a bit. Great playing as usual dude. \m/
Give up picking some practice, seriously. That's the weak link in alternate picking and will balance out strength in the wrist. Practice it like you would downpicking for a warm up, then do some alternate picking and you should notice an improvement immediately
Damn dude I used my LTD Deluxe 7 and my slow ass maxed out (picking clean - 8th notes) at 200 - 210 You are riding the lightning up at 300 holy shit wind batman🤯
Do just as this guy on the video. Start with low bpm metronome (I mean like bpm that you can easily downpick at), and play for a minute or two, go 10bpm up, play, 10bpm up, and do this until you can't be consistent with your hits and can't keep up, go back down to where you started and repeat the whole process.
but maybe you can use hybrid picking no? one upstroke and 2 down with resting in the next string to pick them. maybe the first note can downstroke and do what im saying.
You are clever! yeah, I tried Hybrid picking but it is not clean either, the fastest possible way was by using 1 upstroke. Or maybe you guys figure out something better!
One thing seb, for just the downpocking for something like MOP or bullets song waking the demon, I just turn my pick with an upslant like Hettfield with the middle finger also for support. I can get to much higher bpms like that. And it’s got that attack that hettfield or Ola England has on their low strings.
I think downstroke picking loses its meaning after 210.. okay - after 220 bpm with 8th notes (it doesn't applies to triplets, played with this tempo) and either sounds like shit, or if it is replaced by alternate picking - the Difference will not be so critical. That's cool if one has awesome downstroke skills, but skills to create an awesome arrangement (even if it will be played with alternate picking in 190 bpm) are better, than to spend 100000000000 hours while practicing in downstroke. The same applies to tremolo picking. You can play it for 5 minutes endlessly in 240 bpm with 16th notes, but most of all the song you play will become a boring shit on third minute and the listener will switch to AC/DC 😁
Impressive not gonna lie. But you did cheat indeed and edited the video to increase the speed. 1:58 look how fast you grab the neck and change position lol.
