This film shows the construction of the Oroville Dam; an earth filled embankment dam situated on the Feather River in California. A massive dredge (:29) such as those which had once scoured California’s land during the gold rush years opens the film. The land is depicted as covered in mine fillings though it had once been lush landscape (:57). California's main water sources were in far remote locations from much of the state’s population (1:34). A map points to the plan designed by water conservationists (1:44). This led to the construction of the Oroville Dam in Oroville (1:53). It was to channel southwards to San Diego (2:02). Feather River follows (2:09). Gold dredge trainings were cut into the country side (2:24). This land was set to be used for the dam (2:31). Workers drill into the stone narrows (2:48). The mammoth diversion tunnel (2:53) was built to divert the water flow of the river. The concrete core block which anchors the dam is shown to be larger than most dams themselves (3:03). This became the greatest earthmoving project (3:10). A diagram follows showing the cone shape that was to be set atop the core block (3:18). Large scale equipment was required for the massive undertaking (3:45). The monstrous stripping wheel is pointed to (3:50). A conveyor belt feeds the stockpiles and drag lines scoop earth into tractors (4:25). Earth movers are pictured equipped with Goodyear tires (4:37) which were used exclusively for the job. Clay was sourced from a clay borrow pit (5:27). Big scrapers move tons of clay (5:43). Loads are unloaded into hoppers (6:21). Materials flow through conveyors (6:35) to further hoppers as a train arrives to be loaded up (6:40). Cars were tipped over in sets of two by massive machinery (7:33). The materials were then sent over the river (8:12) and deposited to another stockpile (8:17) that would be used for the dam (8:23). Bottom dumps slide under the double hopper (8:31). Bulldozers flatten the dumped materials (9:14). Compactors move in after the bulldozers (9:28). Loaders cart giant jagged pieces of granite (10:02). The granite chunks were used to resist erosion (10:18). Goodyear employees arrive to service the tires (10:33). Photographs show a train wreck as two car sit stacked atop one another (10:41). The rail began running again four days later (11:23). More earth was moved in a short duration for this project than in the history of man (11:41). The project was completed in 1968 (12:06). Seven of the countries leading contractors participated in the job (12:12). A list of the contractors follows (12:18). The boss of overall construction was J. Rodney Mims (12:46). The completed dam follows (12:54) rising 770 feet above the valley. A shot of the resivor follows (13:14). It was developed under the guidance and control of California Department of Water Reservoirs and produced by the Audio-Visual Department of The Goodyear Tire Company (13:56).

What a lovely dam. Surely no terrible fate could ever befall it
There was nothing wrong with the dam. It was the spillway that failed.
Juan Brown should love this.
More like a Goodyear tire advert.but I do love these old engineering videos
Great video. Love them GOODYEAR tires. Gotta have a GOODYEAR tire!!! To bad they couldn't look into the future when The dams spillway failed. Good thing the dam was built dam good, why? Because they used equipment with dam good GOODYEAR tires. Ok, that was the last one.
There’s an excellent description of the spillway failure on the Practical Engineering channel.
See Jwan Brown's Bloncolerrio channel on RUclips for the best coverage of the spillway failure, all the way through the total rebuild. One Billion dollars later and done in two years.
Saw it before, good video.
Had several school field trips to Oroville dam during construction.
Pretty cool.
And no Cat machines were broke down due to a bad wiring harness or an ECM malfunction or electronic fuel injector failure!!!!!!!!!
Haha yar I feel you comment have a Powerstroke diesel down due to an intermittent tranny code, but my 89 7.3 IDI just keeps rolling on.
Don't forget about DPF issues! 😆
I got a CAT ET scanner still will not do what dealer can only do.
I am switching to Komatsu
Not even so much as egr

California all machines trucks must be Their 4 level 2 .
Neat to see it when it was new the first time.
This is fantastic! Thanks for uploading!!! I grew up in the foothills, so anything Northern California is super interesting!

This film spoke about California being the most populace state in 1968. I checked online, back then it was a bit over 19 million; in 2022 at over 39 million. A doubling of state population in less than 60 years!
The world population was 4B in 1974. The planet is set to hit 8 Billion by years end. So, what is that, doubled in 48 years???
Is there any wonder why we have resource and pollution problems?
I live about a mile downstream from this dam.
I'd like to visit the area one day.
I just wouldn't want to live there, too hot! 😆 As much as I grunt about 6 months of winter up north.
@@volvo09 104° yesterday 😭
I live a mile above the dam. I feel safer above the dam. 😉
@@watertankhikes lucky you lol
How about those Goodyear tires! I bet they would make great swings afterwards!
I think this is more about those damn tyres that the dam.
No one is complaining about "the watermark numbers in the middle of the screen" like they usually do. Amazing. Nice video.
Lol great point. Maybe our minds associate it with this type and generation of film.
Still not complaining though 😎
Come to think about it, the website is waaaaay more annoying 🤣🤣🤣
Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes.
In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous RUclips users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do.

Kinda feel like this was more of a commercial for Goodyear tire than the actual construction of the dam itself.
American Might! Could we do it again? Love it.
Watching the spillway being rebuilt in a few months (temporary) and then being fully rebuilt a year after that was an engineering marvel.
From what I recall from some anecdotal reports from the 1970s, the filling of that reservoir prompted some earthquake activity in the region, as the water seeped down deep to arouse an ancient earthquake fault that was unknown at the time of the planning of the Oroville Dam.
But nothing of note has been mentioned about regional earthquake activity since.
thank you
That was the scuttlebutt at the time, but there never was any scientific or geological basis for this claim. The earthquake was four years after the dam started filling, and the aquifer where the fault was always was there.
🏆🏆🏆👍🇺🇲🙏.
Thank you for sharing
*DAM*
A damn good video about a really good dam ☺️
No Goodyear tires for the trains?
Sacramento Valley !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You could never do a project like this anywhere in the US much less California. The EPA would never allow permits for this.
Building a dam on devil mtn...
Fast forward 2022, they have no water
Yes for sure
Less than 10% of the rebar that should have been used n the spillway was.
Before they poured the concrete in the new spillway there was so much rebar you could not see through it.
A lot of things have changed in 50 years.
Including the knowledge base that engineers learn from.
Equipment and materials available to the contractors.
Concerns about environmental impact and longevity.
Hard to imagine five years ago this dam was overflowing.
You do understand that it was water undermining a joint, and the subsequent scouring that caused the spillway failure?
How did the cars not disconnect when they spun around?
Talk about tire problems, you should have seen the tire wear at a shale oil refinery. When they were digging up the shale instead of fracking the oil out. It was the early to mid 80s.
The couplers rotate. This is the same way that coal is dumped just about everywhere.
DAMN..OR DAMM!?!🤭🤫👍
@Jayden k all video yo...love these Ole timer videos.. show how mighty we truly are
It is DAM.
@@royreynolds108 I'm using damm x2 in thee pleural sense..gotta read between thee lines...
A Goodyear ad lol
This is a damn Goodyear commercial.
Ahhhh, back when California was great. Now it’s newsom , no new reservoirs, just a billion $ choo choo train no one will ever ride.
And that's all well and good,....but,......who made those tires??
And then the Spillway failed.
Thanks democrats 😞
👍👍🍦🍦
Not one Goodyear tire is made in America now. Except racing
Meanwhile New York has been trying to build the Second Avenue Subway for 100 years, with nothing to show for it except a 3-station stub built at enormous cost.
Don’t recognize any of those contractors. Probably all bought by Haliburton.
mooo/moo
And it obliterated a beautiful valley and wrecked the ecology of an entire watershed. By the time Oroville was being designed, we had nuclear power, oceans, and desalination. This monstrosity should have NEVER been built.
When it comes to irrevocably scarring the land like this, it should be minimal and for flood management only.
We need twenty more Oroville dams in CA.
But the 1975 Oroville earthquake (possibly caused by the weight of the water behind Oroville Dam) did stop the construction of Auburn Dam. Now Auburn State Recreation Area sees millions of outdoor recreation visits per year.
A tire commercial...go figure
should of build a Gloryhole using the diversion tunnel instead
Can't wait to see this in the background of a $uicideboy$ video
And next week boys and girls the governor will announce that California will have all electric cars in its fleet by 2025. 👏👏👏(slow clapping) isn't that great?
In other news Lake Mead is quickly reaching dead head levels with their turbines due to very low water levels that will prevent the dam from generating power for Las Vegas and parts of California. But they are going all electric anyway. FJB FGN
Could do without the Oroville Dam orchestra while narrative is rolling.
So this will provide power to your new Electric Cars.
I do wonder how well Electric Machines will do this in the New Green Energy World!
I would really LIKE TO KNOW GREENIES!
John, Australia.
There is no hope for us. China will control all power with its filthy coal fired Power Plants that emit enough pollution to blot out the sun, but nothing to see here..
Too bad they built a shoddy spillway.
Thank you.
Ehh, hard to predict the future...
At this point it looks like the spillway won't get used again, but I'm sure in due time it will.
We learn as we go. No process we use today was perfect from the start.
@@volvo09 ,
I am referring to the original spillway which, when it failed miserably, was proven to have been built below specifications.
When men were men!!!!!!!!! 100 plus degree temps and no ac cabs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! nowadays these pansies have to have stereos and finger tip controls!!!!!! Grade control, GPS, auto this and auto that!!! lol
They call that progress. Think about it. I bet your car has ac.

What about the pansy at 5:10 using a umbrella for shade.
The horror movie music made this unwatchable for me. Started wondering why a documentary about a dam was making me so anxious! Ha
lol, I loved it! meant business, not this pansy hip rock or rap crap.
I thought it was hysterically over the top epic music...
