  • The RO125 has always impressed me with its ability to be a monster but yet a refined finishing sander. So in this video I want to show you how you can quickly sand a rough crappy board to a beautifully polished piece of wood..

    I sanded a 6' x 3' pre-finished tabletop, on a patio of the client's home.
    80 grit, through 220 grit, using the Rotex 125 and the CT Midi vacuum.
    I barely needed a dust mask.
    I swept the area (floor) for dust....and found hardly any residual dust.
    Amazing.

    A number of years ago I gave a similar demonstration at a monthly meeting of the Ottawa Woodworkers Association. One of the gents in the crowd pointed out... and then demonstrated ... how he used his smoother plane to bring his pieces to the same degree of smoothness as I did with Mirka's P4000 Abralon (which I worked up from P80). The difference, however was in the amount of time I wasted as compared to the gent who hand planed the sister board to the one I'd sanded. It took him less that 2 minutes to get a completely smooth surface, then he took P4000 Abralon and hand sanded the board. Total time for my friend: 2mins 20 seconds.
    You tell me which method is the most efficient: sanding, or hand planing followed by sanding. It's a no-brainer!

    The orbital works pretty nice, but why aren't you using the rotary on grits at 400+? If you're going to stain the wood, you won't go above 180 grit. The 400 is a polish grit. I'm not too sure why you would use anything above 400 without laying down a sanding sealer, or a stain, or lacquer.

    I have a dewalt and I think it does just fine. I just don't quite understand the festool thing. I don't do wood working for a living though. Is it like snap-on for mechanics? Are the tools themselves that much superior,or is it the vacuum port. If someone could explain it, I would appreciate it. I'm not bashing or whatever so don't get your panties on a bunch. I'm just trying to learn something.

      In terms of sanders, the rotex can replace a few others in your stable. And while the sanding discs are rather pricey (imho) I have found them to be "reusable", depending on what you are sanding of course. If it's a previously finished piece then they clog like the rest but for just wood, I've been shocked at how long a single pad can last. I've never seen anything like it! And more abrasive retention should equal less sanding swirls...

    not to sound stupid here, but couldn't a cheap black and decker do the same thing? I understand the appeal in some ways, but a random orbital, I can sand something all the way up to 400 grit and it feels like glass. I know the festool is better for many reasons, but the end result is something quite similar even with a 20.00 tool, am I missing something here? I'm not saying its not the best sander for this, I'm just saying practically speaking, what am I paying another $400 here for?

      Find a cheaper sander, that has a vacuum attachment. These sanders usually have holes in the pad (and sandpaper) for sucking up dust and grit as you sand.
      But the Festool has a unique trick.....it blows air out of the center pad hole, and vacuums using the outer holes....nice.

    Anyone know how long those Sanders last? I am a sander at my job and its not something I have done before and I work with a Festool ets 150 and it brakes on me about every couple of months. Is that natural since I use it 8hours a day?

    • @FreqBand
      @FreqBand 8 лет назад

      +TheEggoProject ......@ 2 months, is roughly...8 hours a day x 46 days (60 days, minus 2-day weekends) = "368 hours" the machine it running, for that period.
      I don't know what "hours" the machine is guaranteed as "normal".
      3 questions:
      -- Is this being used hours at a time ?, without stopping so that it gets warm ?
      -- Does the same tool (150) break-down ?....or do you have a few 150 sanders that break ?
      -- What broke ?...how ?
      I'm interested.

    • @cultcheck9274
      @cultcheck9274 8 лет назад

      +Randy Leifer I use it at least for 6 hours straight. and to be honest what breaks? I can never tell. we ship it back to festol and all they do is change all of the parts inside. how do they break? they just stop working mid job. And this applies to all of the 150s we have. sometimes repaired ones that come back have sparks flying in the inside of the sander once you turn them on. at that point I know they won't last long

      Wouldn’t mind getting a real Japanese hand plane doing long translucent shavings on a pine board. The sound and pine fragrance released would be so therapeutic.

      Frank W They come in every level of work (coarse to fine), just like western planes, and would bury the sander above in this task, too.

    I fail to see why you need to make it smooth as glass at this point. you're going to be putting a finish over that which will raise the raise. Don't you really want to make the finish smooth as glass?

    why the hell are you sanding raw wood to 2000 grit? what a waste of time... the finish needs to be like glass, not the wood!

  • @TheVividvisiontv
    @TheVividvisiontv 6 лет назад

    Too much sanding levels. You treated the wood like it is a 1000 dollar piece of wood. Is not a rocket sciene.. use 3 levels and just paint it or polish it. If you want glass feeling then buy a glass.

    Could you use this sander for preparing hardwood stair treads for new stain?

      I just finished my old beat up oak stair treads. Started with belt sander, then random orbital sander, finish with multi tool getting into the corners, and carbide scraper if you must.

      Very much a great use for a rotary sander.
