    On Monday, Apple announced their long awaited headset - Vision Pro. The sales pitch presented was very slick, but markets didn't seem to buy into the hype... with Apple's share price dropping following the announcement. So... is it already a flop?

      The price drop might not mean much. But the headset is almost certainly going to be a flop.
      So many people already use VR headsets, but not for regular computing, which is what Apple appear to be aiming at. People use them for gaming with PCs and in some technical industries they are used for training. AR headsets have even less uses. The headset is far too heavy and bulky for long term use, because Apple made it out of metal rather than plastic, and you really wouldn't want to wear it for the full 2 hour battery life, let alone an 8 hour work day. Those who used it for the half an hour demo said that they wouldn't use it for longer than that because it's so heavy.
      The hand and eye tracking functionality is about the best thing on it, but now other companies are easily going to be able to implement that into their far cheaper VR headsets. And they have a whole year to bring something to market - which isn't hard to do if you already make VR headsets and Apple have just shown you how they did it.
      But the most obvious thing that is going to kill it, is that Apple fans are largely superficial. Lots of other companies make far better functioning products for a lot less. Apple just has a way of making their products look good. However, this doesn't look good. It's always going to make you look odd. There's a reason "the eyes are the windows to the soul" is a saying. Completely covering up your eyes is odd for those around you, but replacing them with a digital version of them is even more weird. Apple hopes people will want to use it in the same way as their phone or laptop. But they have completely failed to design a product that would let you do that. It's not designed to be used in a mobile way. The best user experience is going to be crashed out on your sofa. But if you are going to just use it for that, why not just buy a way cheaper, more comfortable, VR headsets and a decent PC that you can use as a media center in your living room.
      There are so many issues with this headset. People who buy it won't use it enough to justify buying another one.

      Yup, I literally came from the Nebula video to RUclips just to leave this comment. It's an extremely well-known phenomenon. Buy the rumour, sell the news. Happens nearly every time Apple announces anything.
      That said, in this case, one of the rumours was that they might release this as a kind of "dev kit" model, _explicitly_ targeted towards developers and the most enthusiastic of enthusiasts. Realistically, that's who it's going to be at first anyway, but it might have helped Apple's image to have made that more explicit.

    The main reason people won't buy the Vision Pro. Is that Vision Pro is a prototype. The presentation isn't for the public. It is meant for the app developers. It's a WWDC. The public will get a better, lighter and cheaper version.

    • @colinwalker6804
      @colinwalker6804 Год назад +15

      I don’t think I can emphasize how much lighter and cheaper the public version would need to be. For any kind of mass adoption your gonna need it to be as light as google glass, that is to say glasses of some form, either have massive battery life if you keep the battery pack or the 2-3 hour battery needs to be built into the set, and the price will need to be $1500 at most. If it’s significantly more expensive than the new IPhone, it won’t stand a chance.
      Also it will need to have a core identity and selling point by the time the public reveal occurs. As it stands, it’s more inconvenient than using a phone for AR, Oculus for VR, or multiple monitors/laptops/tablets for productivity.

    • @Simonb1977
      @Simonb1977 Год назад +8

      @@colinwalker6804 That depends. A version for just in the living room can be as big as Meta's Glasses. But yes if you want to walk around outdoors, is has to be as small as Google glass.
      For comparison, the first laptop were massive and only for indoor. But now...
      The Vision Pro is a computer by itself. So it can be the price of a Macbook. It does not have to outperform a phone or a laptop. It in a seperate class of computer. Most people will in time have a smartwatch, smartphone, laptop/PC and a VR-headset.
      The reason for this presentation is so that app developers can create a core identity. They have some time till the consumers version Vision Pro comes out.

    • @JimCullen

      That was the rumour Simon, and it's probably still going to be true in practice. But in the end that's _not_ how they marketed this. They're marketing it as though it's ready for end users. It might have helped them if they had just been explicit and said "for now, this is for developers".

Or the XR headsets by Vive for example. Microsoft Hololens if you want the closest competitor who also have had a built in battery that last longer thna the soap with a cable that Apple uses, and has had the hand gestures and tracking that Apple says they innovated on by getting rid of pesky controllers that you will need as soon as you do anything except use this as a second monityor for massive viewing.

Not as huge and obnoxious to look at outdoors. You can and people do take Xreal Air on a plane or connect it to a steam deck and have a large immersive private screen.
      Adding higher level hardware is great, but its the bare minimum and doesn't make the headset a revolutionary product. The demo showed nothing significant. The usability of the headset is worse with the soap with a wire battery. Hololens invented good controller free hand tracking 7 years ago. If Apple's hand tracking is better today, then that's not a surprise, but it is far from the novel innovation they called it. And They dissed controllers as if iyou wouldn't need one for anything more complex that viewing screens and loving screens around.
      What apps does the Apple headset have? None rn. Its an enterprise priced dev ket being marketed for consumers. You can actually get amazing experiences that you can get today for a price that most people can enjoy them. People diss on those and pretend that anything less than the Apple one is going to be a good device, even though it has not demoed anything different or special, costs 10x more of the most basic excellent competition, and 3.5x more than Occulus and Vive XR headsets,

    • @bkc7890
      @bkc7890 Год назад +3

      @@ABDLLHSDDQI It’s a stretch to call the quality of these devices excellent. Microsoft’s mixed reality division is reportedly in incredible disarray, lacking direction to take their product, and employees are leaving to work for Meta so much so that I wouldn’t trust entering the HoloLens ecosystem right now given that it costs $3,500 just like Apple.
      Xreal Air essentially only offers the ability to project a device’s display in front of you, without any kind of environmental blending that you would get from a smarter device, and it costs a little more than the quest 2 did at launch, and with the beam it costs almost as much as the quest 3 will (different devices with different capabilities, but gives perspective on price of technology). It does a lot less than what apple’s glasses will do, and that’s reflected in the price.
      As for HTC’s Vive series of devices, they’re not even doing what the Vision Pro and HoloLens are trying to do with their productivity focused devices. They’re competing directly with Meta and the Quest line, not with Apple and Microsoft, and in that respect their devices are riddled with so many quality of life issues that it can be argued their most premium device, the Vive XR Elite at $1,099, should be passed over in favor of the $299 base Quest 2, let alone the Quest Pro which it’s actually trying to compete with.
      As I’ve laid out, it’s disingenuous to say that what Apple is doing is being done by everyone else but cheaper. Most headsets are focused on gaming rather than productivity, sunglass devices only project a fixed screen in front of you, and the product that Apple is actually competing with, Microsoft’s HoloLens at the same price of $3,500, is reportedly a dumpster fire in terms of company management and I would not trust entering its ecosystem until Microsoft figures out what they want to do with the device and puts out a new updated model to compete with the new technology Apple is putting out in the market.

    Apple silicon is top-notch. The VR specifications, including cameras, lenses, and the new chip R1 tailored for sensing the environment, make me think that we have transitioned from the age of personal desktop computers (PC) to mobile computing (geodata GPS, accelerometers, compass). The next natural step would be computers that can sense the environment more naturally, just like humans.
    Regarding privacy, it is more closely related to the business model. For instance, Google, being an advertising company, is more inclined to sell personal data, while Apple's main income comes from selling hardware. Technically, the enclave security elements in Apple's silicon (similar to Google's Titan chip) can handle sensitive data very well. The more powerful the chip, the better it can process data locally rather than uploading it to the cloud.
    PS: I am not sure if UK and AU legislation allows end-to-end encryption like in the US. I noticed that while trying to enable advanced secure settings on my iPhone, I faced a message stating, 'Sorry, not implemented in your jurisdiction,' so...

    I think the key difference between Metas and Apples device is that Meta went all in on the metaverse, a product next to no one would ever use whereas this is an AR device (augmented reality) which effectively means you're not living in a computer simulation, you're just augmenting the reality. In other words, you're putting a screen in front of you that displays the actual world around you but has all the upsides of being at a computer.
    Knowing Apple, and as mentioned in the video, I'm sure this will become a huge success and at the current moment, this is merely just setting the foundation for a whole new product line and technology. I reckon, at least in part, the reason for the share price drop is just reluctance to change. Also as mentioned in the video was the fact that Airpods and Applewatches became stylish and mainstream, so too will this. Although, probably to a much lesser extent, potentially on par with Macbooks or iMacs.

  • @colinwalker6804
    @colinwalker6804 Год назад +2

    The way I see it, this is just non-viable as a base level offering. I feel it has WiiU/Stadia syndrome where it has cool ideas and technology, but it’s a bad pitch without a core identity and software to make it worthwhile.
    For someone who wants a VR headset for entertainment, a Oculus Rift or Steam VR set will cost less and have more offerings. Oculus and Steam already has lots of software support and the large user base.
    In terms of using it for AR technology, Apple is kinda competing with itself here. The easiest way to get people to accept AR technology is through their phones, not headset’s.
    In terms of cost the cheapest competition only cost $500. As those familiar with gaming know, the PlayStation 3 had a lot of hype going into it before launch against the Xbox 360, but the difference in price killed it. That was a difference of a few hundred dollars, not thousands. The PS3 recovered only when it got the software and brought down the price substantially, often cutting innovations and technology to bring that cost down.
    The competition ranges from $500-1,000USD. That price point will have to be brought below the cost of production probably to even be competitive.
    Lastly, yes Apple does indeed have a strong fandom who are effectively locked in its ecosystem, but those people are not numerically large enough to sustain this product. At best you get an initial surge in purchases in the first quarter, and then stagnation at best and deep decline at worse as everyone who wants and can afford this headset already have one.
    Overall, I think the AR angle is better than trying to push for a metaverse necessarily. A digital screen over your daily life is more appealing and certainly more practical. But if you are going to make something like this work, it needs to be more like sunglasses you put on and lightweight like sunglasses, with a decent battery life built in, and enough practical uses that don’t have easier or cheaper alternatives:
    •AR can be done on your phone/tablet.
    •VR is considered expensive and niece even at $500.
    •People don’t want to do work task with a $3,500 headset that could be done by multiple monitors or a split screen that cost between $0-1,000 at most. •There’s likely to be a drought of software, which will require apple to make most things in house, and the lack of software will further deter new customers and thus discourage app development.
    With Apple Watch and Air Pods, the innovation seemed to actually solve a problem or augment daily life. No more chord management with AirPods, and due to the lack of a headphone Jack people don’t have a choice anymore if they wanna charge their phone and listen to stuff. Apple Watch was basically a more convenient, if reduced function version of your phone you could always have on you while not looking silly. This doesn’t have that problem it solves or feeling that it augments what you already have.
    What is this product’s identity when you strip out the things that are done better or more practically or far cheaper, what is left that’s worth that price? You have a creepy looking semitransparent pair of goggles, a slick and admittedly smaller battery pack, and the most cameras and sensors on a headset ever…that’s it. A pair of clunky goggles that are more inconvenient than your phone, tablet, or computer to use. More expensive than a phone, tablet, or laptop. Less entertaining than pure VR machines while also being more expensive. And a device that will require entirely different development design so it’s unlikely that it’ll attract and maintain 3rd party support. It’s a bad pitch.

To deter casual consumers who aren’t so tech savvy from getting it and being disappointed in this early-gen product, Apple gave it a high price. You might ask why they’re even releasing it, it’s because Apple still needs to attract developers to the space in order to have apps and find use cases and make improvements to the software stack before they get people who would just never buy it again if the experience was poor. They want to keep sentiment about AR/MR high within the consumer’s mind

The appearance of the Google Glass was a huge factor for its flop, but the google glass was designed to be something you wear to go out of this house on the daily basis, so I needed to have some kind of fashion appeal. The Apple vision Pro is clearly not designed to used outside of home, work or a specific environment. Its external battery only lasts 2 hours and they say you can use the headset all day when it's plugged in. That means Apple expect people to use the device plugged in most of the time. So, it doesn't matter if you are "less attractive" when you are using it if you are not supposed to be using it in social events or when you are going out.

    8:17 Fighter pilots are already doing and have so for dacades and the US army is close to doing it to... Which when I was going and at a doctor's appointment I did a thought experiment if I could use this headest for stuff like that... And other then it being bulky I could... But why would I for $3k when my $350 V-moda gold and black over ears headphones which do look good and my S22 ulta I got for $600 do the same thing but "better" and more discrite?
