As inflation has kicked up rates across the world and workers look for ways to protect their wages, labour unions have started to show their resurgence. But Elon Musk and Tesla have refused to talk with the unions, and in October, over a hundred Swedish Tesla workers walked out in protest, triggering a wave of sympathy strikes across the country. In this video, we're going to take a look at why Tesla is suing Sweden, why Sweden loves unions, and who's going to win.

US corporate giants have tried butting heads with unions in Scandinavia before; they usually lose in the end. That's how McDonalds employees here in DK have good wages, 5 weeks of paid vacation and maternity leave.
Here in Lithuania, 4 weeks of paid vacation and 2 years of maternity leave are mandated by our government.
Denmark, like Sweden, has 5 weeks of paid vacation and parental leave (both maternity and paternity) by law; there is no need to be in a union or on a union contract to be guaranteed that. I'm not saying that unions are pointless, but for those two points, they are.
The DK case is unrelated to Sweden, The Swedish collective-agreements is a unique collaboration between the unions the companies collective organisation, it is unique to Sweden. I have been active in Swedish union, part of the union team dealing with the collective-agreements with the employer. In any negotiation where there is no agreement you dont have the right to strike and the employer "wins". The Swedish collective-agreements lost their power when sweden entered the EU.
The result may be that American companies do not start up or stay in Scandinavia, or even the EU in the long run.
@@RandomerFellow American companies are not in a habit of leaving market opportunities to their competitors. Strangely enough, they seem to pay their workers much better here than their US workers and still make a profit.
I honestly feel like American companies can go sell their products elsewhere if they don't conform to how our society works. Labor exploitation doesn't end up well here in Sweden. We are skilled and proficient, but we are also well aware of our value.

Just leave and let people who are willing to work do their job. Nobody owes you anything... YOu agreed on salary X -> you get salary X. if now you want Benefits Z and you don't get them... GO and find a company that will give those benefits.

A bunch of errors in this video. Tesla sued Transportstyrelsen and Postnord, not the union. And the courts only made a temporary decision to allow for the plates to be delivered, amoungst other things
They sued both Transportstyrelsen and Postnord, but like you said they won the temporary decision against Transportstyrelsen, not Postnord.
Another fault is the number of workers on strike. It is not 130, it's an undisclosed fraction of those. All Tesla service centers in Sweden are open. IF Metall wants to represent 130 workers, but it just some of them that are actual members of the union, perhaps 10%.

Danish unions says that if the Swedish unions ask the Danes for support, they would do so by striking in Denmark as well. It annoys both unions and Danish politicians that Tesla refuses to participate in the established traditions for how the "rules" on the job market is conducted in Denmark since 1899. Not by political decret, but by negotiation between union and employer organisations.
Edit: And the Danish union 3F has joined the conflict by restricting Tesla cars from being docked and transported to Sweden via Denmark. There is however still no direct conflict in Denmark, as the union hope negotiation and reason would prevail, to persuade Tesla a Collective Agreement is benefical for all.

@@tangfors today the Danish union 3F declared it would stop the transport of Tesla cars to Sweden. With both Norway and Denmark eliminated as an alternative for Tesla import to Sweden. The conflict could easily escalate to a Nordic conflict.

Finland stands with Sweden as the Finnish Transport Workers' Union announced today that they'll start blocking all shipments to Tesla in Sweden that are going through Finland. They will start the block on the 20th. 🇫🇮🤝🇸🇪

The information between 6:22 and 6:44 seems to be completely wrong. Seko did not get sued, Postnord (a postal company) and Transportstyrelsen (the branch of government dealing with traffic) did. And no one has “won” a lawsuit in a few hours, it’s just that as a stop gap solution Tesla can now go pick up their mail from the sender instead of sending it through Postnord. (they couldn’t before because of a contract)
it might be a different lawsuit that the video is talking about but more likely the name of the union and the name of the company people are striking at has gotten mixed up.
Transportstyrelsen*, but otherwise correct! TLDR News need to be better at factchecking. Always errors in videos where I know the subject, makes me wonder if all of their other videos have a lot of errors as well.

They do make their videos quickly so some mistakes are to be expected.
But factchecking is worse in the news than I thought when I was young. Best not to be taken as gospel.
And another major factual error is the quantity of workers on strike. The video claims over 100 workers are on strike, a number with Tesla alongside other sources has disputed. Tesla in a mail to Swedish Tesla owners stated that over 90% of its employees have chosen to remain in its position, and other sourced had indicated only 6 out of the 130 employees tesla have are on strike. Some employees have even started a strike against the strike, copying their uniform, but changing the message on the vest.
Another factual error is regarding the union firings in Buffalo. The reason they won the ruling was because those workers weren't fired unjustly. Firing workers who are unionising is illegal. Tesla was removing the video labelling team for autopilot as it had developed a neural net algorithm to do it instead. The firings would have happened regardless of union involvement.
Moreover, while Tesla has made their stance very clear against Unions, something which might pressure workers away from trying to join, interviews with workers indicate that there is little to no interest in doing so at all. You might see article stating that Tesla pays workers less on average, and have fewer benefits, which is true on filings, however not true in reality. This doesn't take into account the Tesla stock options which Tesla uniquely offers to all its employees (15% off on tesla stock twice a year- up to a certain amount).
I hope changes to this video are made accordingly.

yes TLDR has turned into a bit of a "workers rights / unions ugh" channel.
Collective bargaining in Sweden is essentially there INSTEAD of government regulation, which is why formal regulation regarding employment is fairly loose there. The way employment is structured there essentially doesn't work without said agreement. It is very different from a company not signing a deal with a union in something like the US, where the government often assumes the roles unions fill in Sweden

This is why, at first, German unions were against the implimentation of a minimum wage by the social-democratic SPD, which shows how unions politics is, like all politics, about power.

The former are the owners of capital, the latter are workers (seeking a fair shake). All labor gains were had through collective action. The owners of capital need to be forced, to be fair. @@grahamcook9289you oversimplify. Manufacturing moves to cheaper countries all the time. While it can be somewhat countered by trying to keep wages down it's quite hard for workers in well developed countries to compete against both automation and low cost countries. Unions are one of the only ways workers can get some negotiation power and it's been quite successful in Sweden where the unions understand that pushing too hard means losing your job.
As a Swede this is interesting because unions here are very complacent. It’s not like in other countries where strikes are common. Most of the time businesses and unions work together. At my work membership is encouraged and the union is regularly invited to recruit people. But unions have fallen in popularity since the 80s when 90% where members to now about 65%. More people are still covered by collective bargaining despite not being members but as far as members are concerned it’s been a steady drop since the 80s as people are becoming more “American” in their values and making money is seen as the goal not solidarity. This is in a way a fight for the Swedish identity.

Agree! But note it is a difference between being a member in a union and being part of the collective agreement.90% of all employees in sweden are under a collective agreement with one of the unions. Those not affected by agreement is almost all hired by very small companies.
Should be said to foreigners that there is very little legalisation for the employment market, almost everything is negotiated between the workers union and the employer union. Yes, the employers also have a union.
Swedish unions are very complacent. For example working for free, otherwise known as internships, is gaining ground in Sweden. But Swedes, naive as they are, don’t even know this. They live in another world. But forcing companies to sign collective agreements is extremely important for the higher ups.

Don't you think it might be due to solidarity strikes though. In Ireland it's legal here too and if the public bus drivers go on strike, then the private sector taxies may also go and vice versa, so the government and public would put way more pressure an any employer that believes it could hold out. He we very almost had a health workers strike in solidarity with the UK's a couple of years ago.
We also have SIPTU, so if the welders at a factory went on strike, the whole private service sector from baristas, to cleaners to plumbers and electrictians could go on strike and totally shut the country down, so that will never happen.

Yes the Norwegian pension fund owns 6.8 billion $ in Tesla and are using that power along with that we are Teslas 4th biggest market and Sweden is the 5th biggest.
We are also very strict with where we invest our money turned down Wallmart for their lack of worker and human rights among a lot of others😅

There have been numerous US franchises that have tried to establish themselves in Scandinavia but have pulled out after finding that their predatory business practices wouldn't fly here.
They are playing by the rules yet the union tries to destroy and empower by acting like a maffia by extortion.

Don't mess with the swedes. Worked with a team (briefly) from saab aerospace. In a nutshell the coffee was taken from the guys in the office, none of them turned up until the coffee was reinstated.

Danish transport union just joined in solidarity strike today. Danish dock workers and truck drivers won't deliver Tesla to Sweden.
Tesla is delivered from Holland not Denmark. Dutch trucks can freely pass Denmark.

If Tesla wants to destroy its European market then this is a good first step. It won't be long until the strikes will spread to Denmark, Germany etc. and I expect potential EU customers might start to focus on other brands as well.

Germany ig metal has responded that in Germany the action of the Scandinavian union would be regarded as illegal and would expose the union to legal action. So the uniformity you speak of doesn't seem to be as universal as you would have us believe. As to focusing on other brands of evs the competition isn't in the eu but rather China. Interesting that Geely owns Volvo now that leaves what swedish manufacturer?. Saic owns MG. Polestar .......vw has announced new partnerships in China.....

wishful thinking, it’s the other way around. Sweden will be the looser in the long run. Tesla has transformed the world for renewables and communications there is no turning back now. Sweden is the looser.

Tesla has already lost because of reputation damage in Europe. Tesla is ignoring a core value of the Swedish society: employers and employees work to together. This is usually done on a sector level where you have employers associations like BIL Sweden negotiating with employees organizations like IF Metall. Agreements are reached in a non-confrontational manner. Swedes rarely go on strike (this is not France). So Tesla triggering this strike and subsequently many solidarity strikes show that Tesla is "not getting" the swedish mindset. This is even spreading to Denmark. There is no data available yet, but I would assume that Swede who considered buying a Tesla is much more inclined to not buy the car from Tesla. Of course, the Swedish EV market is not important for Tesla, but the reputation damage might spill over to Norway or even Germany. Of course, Tesla sales in Europe are far lower than the sales in the USA and China.
Norway is the country with the highest EV amount per capita by a big margin. So I would say that if norway were to go on a strike too tesla would get sad.

It already spilled over to Norway shortly after your comment, lol. Fellesforbundet started blocking Teslas going to Sweden in a similar move as Denmark.
Many people here in Norway have shrewdly walked away from Tesla due to reliability, quality issues and other manufacturers offering cheaper and better products.
Reliability is a massive must in Norwegian terrein. You don't want to be stuck out in the mountains or valley in Norway
Quick correction, it was not SEKO that was sued, it was the Postal Service and the transport agency. It's not a final ruling and the ruling said that Tesla must be able to, themselves, PICK UP the licens plates, it did not force the postal service to deliver them.

Then you can go and work in that Tesla Factory for the equivalent of the price of an ice cream per month and without any safety standards. Without the unions, we would still be sending in children into factory machinery to clean it when it was still running hell they are halfway back there in the USA already.
Do you have any clue what factory owners and corporations did before unions? I have no desire to go back to that, but if you want to die on the factory floor for just enough money to buy dinner for the evening, go the fuck right ahead.
This is a good example of culture clash. Elon simply does not understand that in Scandinavia we have other ways of doing things, and there are "rules" to follow. He's going to find out that even he has to adapt to local customs.
This is also a really easy thing to get behind, in may sound great in theory but when Tesla choose to walk away from this market because it's relatively small and there's only so much hassle you're prepared to take, then it becomes a bigger problem. I don't know that much about this so I probably shouldn't comment but I have an inherent phobia for the unions, they really love to consolidate power and sure that's what they're suppose to do in a way but they behave like the mob many times and sometimes even completely disrespect the workers and what happens to the company, it's all about getting their way it seems.
@@matsfrommusicI think you need to read up more on how unions work in Scandinavian countries. It’s in many ways a very different approach than what you are use to. I feel it’s a common mistake people do, thinking all unions globally, work the same. They all come from and are a reaction to different historical contexts, cultures and national laws. Swedes are non confrontational and tend to go for middle ground, fairness. Our unions reflect this. The fact that this conflict has become a big ugly strike speaks volumes and not to Teslas favour.
@@avihenda I'm somewhat aware as I'm Swedish. I'm not saying I know all that much about it but I've seen how some unions in Sweden work and it's far from being non confrontational. It's been instances where this have been very obvious and the most well know case I guess is from the early-mid 2000 where the union where protesting outside a restaurant in Gothenburg because they didn't approve of the employment deal the owner had with the people working there, and this was pure harassment. In this case however, this was the will of the workers themselves, it was an arrangement that made it possible for them to work there because it meant they could work unusual hours or whatever it was, I don't remember exactly. But the union didin't care about that at all and this went so far people quit and the owner eventually decided to sell the business. The Swedish municipal union behaves just like the political party it derives from, like a bully. I'm sure I'm exaggerating my feelings here, I might even be completely wrong about the Tesla/union thing too. :/

If you work extra hours in Sweden that is regulated and compensated, nothing you have to worry about unless you are working illegally without a permission and in that case the union can’t make any difference.

The court said that Tesla should be
allowed to pick up the plates directly from the manufacturer while the case is ongoing. Unfortunately for tesla, all plates are already at the postal company and they are not forced to deliver them yet, case is still ongoing.
Imo, that's transportstyrelsens problem. They have a mission to provide license plates to everyone, civillian or manufacturer (Tesla is a tax payer in sweden). If PostNord refuses to deliver them, transportstyrelse should take them back and find an alternative to postnord to make the deliveries.

@@maxx4576det är inte postnord eller TS som vägrar ge ut skyltarna, det är postnords personal som sympatistrejkar. TS och PostNord ska vara neutrala. Därför agerar de inte på något sätt. Svenska myndigheter kan inte förvägra tesla nåt men de kan inte heller vägra folk att strejka.
Dessutom är lösningen enkel, skriv på kollektivavtalet. Bollen ligger faktiskt hos Tesla.

The main reason we have Unions here in sweden is because we dont have a minimum wage by law.
Technically, if you arent a unionized company, you can pay a pitance for labour when compared to other industries who are unionized.
You also wont have to follow or buy into the many other things the Swedish Unions demand besides simple wage scales.
This is the main reason why so many people are in unions here in sweden, it is generaly accepted as the rule, as the collective agreements between unions and employers set the wages, additional vecation days, and so on.
In Switzerland Tesla is compliant to the union rules. However those are not simply business-union relations, it's an agreement between all car garages / repair shops and all workers, regardless of union or not. It was made univerally valid by the government, the unions and the employers.
There are lots of those agreements and roughly half of the overall people working in Switzerland are working under collective employment agreements.
It's nice because people aren't allowed to strike if they are in a collective employment agreement. That's why we have so few strikes.
an important thing to mention regarding the dip (it has risen back up to 70%) in union memberships is that when the automotive strikers in the US gained victories, other adjacent companies and businesses which were not unionized suddenly began to increase salaries and provide better benefits as well for their workers, specifically to avoid giving their workers incentive to also get unionized. this is indicative of another challenge for unions.
So Unions, like most good things, not only has to consistently fight employers regarding worker's rights, salaries and protections, but whenever they do manage to guarantee those things a lot of employees will suddenly forget why they are in an union to begin with, and employers are very keen to uphold the image that they give fair deals to employees, despite prior history of not doing so, furthering the illusion that the Unions are merely a obtrusive third party rather than the literal only reason why conditions are so good in the first place.
there is a reason why businesses in unionized countries appear far more fair and balanced than businesses in low-unionized countries, because the former knows that if they fail to meet basic demands of the workers they will start working together and collectively bargain.
It's also funny when companies try to use the excuse "We don't need a CBA, our employees have better conditions anyway" because it's pure bs. If that were true, there's no harm in signing the deal, it doesn't prevent that, it only makes sure the conditions are not worse.

Why? This case in Sweden shows exactly what happens when unions get too much power. Notice how there isn't talk about the percentage of workers who went on "strike". There is also talks that IFMetals also had offered workers to strike by paying more than what their wages were which they are capable of doing because they have a large warchest.
The port strikes in Canada were also telling. The workers demanded nearly a 15% wage, and the median salary was already $136k. For perspective, a software developer job in Vancouver nets $88k. The port workers held the country hostage, making additional demands like no automation. This is what happens when you have unions that have too much power. A more trivial job can become super high paying not because it requires skill or even an education but because they happen to be in a position where they strike they can effect the company the most.
The UAW is another example of an union that has gone amuck. Multiple top people in the union were convicted and to an extent they can negotiate deals that work well for the top people in the union not ones that are great for the lower wages.
Time and time again I have seen unions be used to essentially cater to a specific class and not "help" the people they were intended to help.

The reason Tesla won the lawsuit in the US mentioned in the video was because they weren't fired for unionising themselves. They were fired because they were part of a data labelling team for Autopilot AI training which had been replaced by an automated system.

Major omission in the video: Tesla called in strikebreakers. The last time a company did that in Sweden was in 1931. The conflict got so bad, five workers were killed.
So strike breakers is a sensitive topic, and essentially the worst offence a company can do against a Swedish union. Once Tesla went that route, they sealed their fate. The union will kick Tesla out of Sweden unless they sign.

Many Swedish companies are actively encouraging collective agreements since the union is forbidden by law to strike for as long as one is active. If I recall correctly Sweden's labour market is the one with the least number of strikes in the democratic world.

Sign the collective agreament. It will be cheaper in the long run and it's the right thing to do.
If 90% of the Tesla employees don't want to join a union, then it's not the right thing to do. Tesla is not as concerned about it being cheaper than they are setting an example for other factories to follow.
What benefits does Tesla get from it? Less than 10% of Teslas workers in Sweden are striking according to Teslas mail to owners of its cars in Sweden. This contradicts the claims (which are sourced from older sources than the mail).

Companies in Sweden choosing to NOT acknowledge collective bargaining have much more freedoms to do as they please than they can in most other countries that have laws regarding this.
The collective bargaining gives the Swedish work environment a great stability that the Swedish employers like. The understanding is also that the union and employers of a certain sector have a great understanding of the practicality and economic feasibility of improvements for the workers, an understanding that politicians in Stockholm may lack.

It's probably a bit simplistic to say Tesla won the lawsuit. One local court has ruled that, afai understand it, they have to allow the plates to be collected. Another court in another region ruled against Tesla. As I understand it, the rulings also only concern if the plates should be delivered while the overall case is handled

- The union "IF Metall" acted only once more than 50% of the mechanics joined the union, there is no thing like unionizing a company in Sweden or any of the Nordic countries
-The right to organise in a union and the right for the union to call out workers to strike is protected by the Swedish constitution
-Since the Swedish government has a hands off approach to the labor market not legislating on terms like minimum wage its up to the unions and employer organisations to agree on the minimum basic terms and compensation for overtime etc , something that is done by sectoral collective agreements
-90% of all workers in Sweden are covered by sectoral collective agreements even though only 70% of the workforce are union members, this is because most employers choose to apply the agreed terms to all their employees regardless if they are union members or not
-Unions in Sweden and indeed the other nordic countries are seen as partners by the the companies, working towards win-win solutions to any situations that may arise
-The tradition of sectoral collective agreements has resulted in a labour market that is very stable where strikes and conflict are few and far between, benefitting workers and employers alike.
-Finally, the world is a diverse place and typically someone moving to, or starting a business in, a new country is generally expected to adapt and integrate, this goes for migrants and billionaires alike

Pull out of Scandinavia in it's entirety, ceding a small, but significant market to Volkswagen and other traditional auto makers.

Tesla should just go on like they do. This is a ridiculous strike and everyone knows it. There are only 13 technicians (of 120) on strike at Tesla - but there are over 16 unions using sympathy strikes in 70 companies blocking services to Tesla and these poor unrelated companies are losing customers and business. Tesla is keeping quiet so only the union propaganda is heard and the quality of their statements is more like an 11-year old. If you have a Tesla it can be hard to get service, and if you rely on Tesla chargers they also not getting serviced. This is not popular, normal citizens getting hurt.

As a Swede i can't agree. This strike is terrible for our economy at the moment. Our BNP falling, as in not even slow increse. Have a Giant company leaving sweden, which im 90% sure Tesla will, is a clear signal for other giant companies to stay away from investing in sweden.
Tesla workers have better salaries than regular mechanics, hence why over 50% won't participate in the strike. We're not sure how many are striking as IF Metall claims 50%, while tesla claims 90% are still working.

You know your business is going well when you have to sue a sovereign entity for the 'right' to destroy the right of your workers to freely associate.
The reason the sued transportstyrelse, swedish DMV. Is becuase they are in charge of producing licence plates. They have an agreement with PostNord, our nationwide postal service, where they only allow PostNord to deliver the plates, you are not even allowed to pick them up yourself. So, the reason they sued, and why the did the right thing in this regard, it that transportstyrelsen by LAW, have to make sure the plates are delivered to the end customer/tax payer. If there choice of postal service can't deliver their mission, transportstyrelsen have to find another way to fulfill their mission. This is why they sued the state essentially.
It's a slippery slope when the state by proxy join in on the blockade, since they by law are prohibited to, and if they can just flat out ignore their mission, why should I pay taxes to finance them if they don't have to deliver?

Swedish workers have the right to, by law, go on strike, as well as other actions (blockades, etc). And that causes inconvenience for others, that's the point. It is perfectly legal for any employer (private or public) to circumvent any consequences of a strike, but it's also perfectly legal (and quite expected) for workers to expand their strike as a consequence for doing so. Let's say Transportstyrelsen would decide to find another carrier to transport their plates - well, obviously their workers would also refuse to touch Tesla plates. Un-unionized workers? Blockade, etc.
Also - "why should I pay taxes to finance them if they don't have to deliver". I highly doubt registration plates are paid for by tax payers.
The real slippery slope here is if unions lose their power enough to make collective agreements "optional" for employers to follow. Most of Swedish worker's rights are not in the law, but in collective agreements. (Swedish law does not even have a minimum wage in law - instead various collective agreements have minimum wages taylored for different industries.) This is the established "Swedish model". You may not like it, and it sure has its flaws, but if you want to tear it down you have to be prepared to replace it with something else because the default is something much, much worse.
Sweden is the icing on the cake to bankrupt Tesla. I want Diesel and regular gas to last forever. When Sweden wins the battle, the union across the globe will win against Tesla, which spells bankruptcy because Elon will EXIT with his SHARES to venture into other projects.

You are wrong about what makes a sucessful export nation. It is not low wages, it is high productivity. The swedish worker is about twice as productive in GDP/worked hours than American Workers. Mostly this is due to our high skill and use of automation and self managing.
Teslas law-siut has not been settled yet, what they were granted was a temporary ruling they may be allowed to pick up the licence plates at the manufacturers site until the law-suit is stettled in court.

what I think many international viewers don't know is that there is no minimum wage in Swedish law. It is completely legal for a employer to pay there worker $0.1/hour. CBA is the minimum wage, not your necessary wage, many workers at companies with a CBA have a higher wage then the CBA. The CBA also is in place, even if you as an individual are not a member of the union, the CBA is between the company and the union as a whole.

The initial statement that 130 people went on strike isn't correct. The UNIONS told 130 people to go on strike, but most didn't, and instead kept working.
Ok, now I've watched the rest of the video, I've found numerous faults. Tesla sued the swedish postal carrier, PostNord, not SEKO.
If this is the level of accurateness your videos normally have for things I don't know about, I need to reconsider you as a source of correct facts.

@@grahamcook9289 Why do you think that? When we unionise we also incorporate upskilling and education, which keeps us updated and highly skilled.
I know some factories and companies moved out but i dont believe that is because of unions, it would also be unfortunate that the only way you could have engineering and manufacturing if you exploit the engineers with bad salaries and unsafe working environments and other form of exploitation.
So i dont believe that to be the case.
I know we have quite a few high tech companies around Scandinavia still.
To me its more about letting hedge funds buy out our resources, with people that doesnt care about the core expertise and production that the companies execute.
We have a high consolidation that stops competition and we have tax systems that gives these investments money and and makes them able to deduct expenses in a way that makes everyone else pay for them, they have a almost completely free distribution of money and resources and can deduct and transfer the expenses to other parts of the society for what they should pay. While our burden increases not only paying for our selves but also covering the expense for these investment firms double over.
Tesla either withdraws from Sweden or agrees but then slowly withdraws. They prob rather give up Sweden than encourage their workers to do the same globally.

This is almost certainly a bot because of the name but to answer the question, sympathy strikes are illegal because they can in large enough numbers cripple economies, as with large enough strikes all economic activity halts - naturally businesses do not like operating in such conditions as it heavily favours unions and can cut into profits, so with the rise of neoliberalism in the 70’s-90’s along with mass privatisation, mass restrictions on unions were implemented as to “not interfere with the free market” and such.

A strike is something against your employer, not against a single customer. Otherwise the customer can claim damages.
Strikes, by their nature, are expensive - companies that are not producing and not paying their workers means... well, the company is not earning income, or earning substantially less income, workers are not being paid, being on strike, other companies that may rely on the company whose workers are on strike produce less. And that is if it is limited to one company.
Sympathy strikes often mean the impact spreads over the wider economy, and the impacts become greater still. And given the significant economic impacts that may have, most governments do not like the idea widespread strikes.
Because of this, many governments ban or significantly limit the use of sympathy strikes. Whether they should is another matter - and while their impact may be significant when they happen, they are very rare in Sweden. Their impact on the wider economy tends to be one of the reasons why they are such a powerful tool for workers.

This started to happen in the 90's in the construction and transportation area in Sweden, with companies from abroad, especially from Eastern Europe, carry out work in Sweden without a collective agreement. Accidents increased ( some drivers didn't even have license for the vehicle they were driving ) , fraudulent constructions increased by not following material guidelines and building standards..... just a few points.

This is the first report that says the workers walked out and you cannot buy Teslas. All reports are that it’s business as usual and though the union declared strike, the workers didn’t and continued to work.

@@KurtFrederiksen Yes, any companies that buys company cars are very unlikely to buy Tesla as long as this strike is going on as the risk is too great for future problems. In the end, the factory can keep running, but if no cars gets sold or transported anywhere, then it wont make money.
Btw, what choice do they have? They have no collective agreement. They have to work to be able to afford basic necessities. Rent still needs to be paid and food still needs to be eaten.
Melon Husk would absolutely fire the workers unless they gave Tesla a glowing effort against the unions and then they would be unable to pay the cost of living. He's done so in other places. That has a chilling effect on future action by the employees since he owns their job unless they have a collective bargaining agreement.

The reason Sweden is mostly pro union are to block unserious companies and or bosses to abuse their workers.
The collective agreement sets the minimum standards the companies and workers needs to follow. The companies are free to give their workers better conditions than the minimum standards in the collective agreement.
I thumbed down because of the error with the trials which is a very big error imho. Tesla sued the mailing company (PostNord) and the transport/traffic agency (let's call it the Agency). Tesla won with the Agency meaning that the Agency is obliged to deliver the plates though any means, not just exclusively through PostNord as the Agency claimed - this means Tesla can pick up the plates themselves. In the meantime Tesla lost with PostNord meaning PostNord is allowed to block deliveries to Tesla.
Tesla did not sue any unions yet (Seko, IF Metall, etc)
The price of defating the union will be worse for tesla in the end. Sweden can avoid many of the eu workers law becus the workers and the companies negotiat. If the union gets to weak Sweden will lose its exemptions and businesses will ge hit by the eu hammer

I'm Aussie, and our unions have been attacked over and over and over by the Liberal/National coalition and those attacks defended by the Murdoch press monopoly, but even with all that, we still have a skeleton that, when compared to the US' looks like a freaking body builder, and if you tried to fire workers for unionising, there is literally 0 chance you'd win the suit, because the right to unionise is protected under our labor laws

Even if comparison is OK right now it would just be a snapshot, Elon wants to reserve the right to change conditions at a moments notice without interference from unions. It is the longer continuity view that is truly at stake.

As to what you asked, is this a trap you are setting or something? Everyone knows the key difference is that Tesla workers are given Tesla shares. So many of them are millionaires. A collective agreement doesn’t prevent Tesla from giving more perks such as this but Elon has in the past threatened to withdraw this if workers joined the union. Was this what you were looking for? Sorry, I don’t know what they have in salary today, but comparing their monthly salary as it would be under collective agreement is not as important.

@@bwat9365 I'm not sure that's easy to do, you would have to ask employees what their wages are and compare. You could compare the average wage of a mechanic and average wage of a tesla mechanic, but that doesn't say much about benefits etc.
There are a few errors in this video.
There was a temporary decision was against Transportstyrelsen, that Tesla is temporarily allowed to pick the signs up.
The decision with Postnord is that the court wants to hear Postnords side before deciding. Postnord has 3 days to respond. They are not currently obliged to deliver anything to Tesla.
No court in sweden have made it clear that the postal system needs to deliver the plates they won againgst the Transportstyrelsen which means Tesla should get the plates put postnord is not obligated to deliver the plates

In America it is the reverse, they are going to use the Tesla NACS standard after Ford and a lot of other companies because of the Tesla supercharger being so numerous and reliable.
The video claims that over 100 employees are striking (out of 130). This is based on an outdated claim by the union. Tesla, in a letter to Swedish Tesla owners stated that over 90% of their employees have chosen to remain in their position, ready to serve customers. Other internal sources claim it may be as low a 6 people that are striking.
Plus, opening up its network was not because of regulation, it was because it could. Why let chargers sit unoccupied when it could be making money and giving a better EV experience to all EV users in Europe. It was always the plan, they just had to expand it at first. Thats why it's slowly opening other markets as well. Plus, its mission is Accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy.
