    You have astonished me since day one brother a lot of people don't realize, but you're creating the 'stereo' vibe for drums live, that's astonishing. some things attack my left ear some things attack my right usually this only possible through producing. But you achieved a way to do it live that not a lot of people can re-create.

  • @jimmsupreme
    @jimmsupreme 4 года назад +1

    Man, I have wondered for quite some time - what's the idea behind the snare in sections like :15 - :43? I think it's measures 5-15 on the sheet music. Like, I can read the sheet music, I can sonically hear their placement, but I'd love to know why you chose to have the snare hits where they are, the syncopation, and if there was any metric modulation at play that you wanted to put in there or was it just a stylized decision made on a whim? Either way, I love your drum parts, and often find myself listening to them when I've hit a wall in writing. I love taking elements from my favorite music and trying to incorporate them into my own music, in my own way. So for me to take a similar approach to snare hits in my video-game-esque music, I need to first understand why you chose to do it in the first place.
    Thanks for the literal hours-on-end of video content I've rewatched, over and over again, marveling at how you write your parts. I love them, and I love the little bits of info you give in the description. You've helped me get past many bouts of writer's block.

    • @TravisOrbin
      @TravisOrbin  4 года назад +2

      That was in the original draft of the programmed drums, so it was Misha's idea. I remember back then he liked to append the end of a guitar phrase with a snare hit (placement varying); that concept is largely in play there.

    • @jimmsupreme
      @jimmsupreme 4 года назад

      @@TravisOrbin I appreciate the response! Do you have any videos/resources that go into your approach for writing drum arrangements? I'm sorry if you already have vids up of it, there's just a lot to wade through already if so haha (not that that is a bad thing!)

    • @TravisOrbin
      @TravisOrbin  4 года назад +2

      @@jimmsupreme I do not. It's a giant confluence of things which is constantly mutating, but suffice it to say the three main influences: the music itself, my own catalog of drummers and other musicians, and my knowledge of rhythm theory.

I have a maple kit. 12 16 and 22. 8ply toms 10ply kick. trying to find the right heads to make it pop. sort of loosing my mind and money in the process

    • @TravisOrbin
      @TravisOrbin  9 лет назад +2

      +Max Sherman Yep, my preferred heads are listed in the equip lists. That ply amount is a little higher than usual, so your drums might be loud but they're gonna be a bit higher by default. I'd get some Vintage Coated Emperors and tune those babies until the wrinkles disappear and add a little Moon Gel to taste.

      Travis Orbin Well this was the second song I ever heard that featured your playing (the first being The Walk) and I could never figure out how to play any of the fills back in the day, when I first heard the outro to Light I remember thinking "This is amazing, why don't I know who this drummer is!?". So it's great to finally see a playalong to help me visually grasp some of the more challenging parts. On a side note, I noticed you don't choke up on the sticks as much as you used to. Is that a conscious decision or does it vary?

    • @TravisOrbin
