    My first visit to Aurora was in 1962. There were several wooden buildings intact and piles of old trash. One small building was wallpapered in old newspapers. Unfortunately, I didn't take any photos. There were also quite a few stone buildings in Masonic down the canyon and no one was around in Bodie, which was the way we came in to Aurora.
    My next visit was in 1985 and Aurora appeared as it does now. Thanks for the video.

    Hi Jeff and Sarah. Just dropped onto your series of videos which I think are excellent.This was the first one I have come across and I had to smile to myself by virtue of the difficulty of reaching the place and the fact that Sarah appeared not well pleased (and fed up!) by the long and uncomfortable journey getting there. It was reminiscent of my late wife Hilary, who had to endure similar trips to mining sites both in the States and at home in the UK. I have always been interested in metal mining and its history since my teens - a long time back! - and she was dragged into remote locations when probably there were other places she would have preferred to have been. Often, in the UK, she was left amusing the kids in the car and in the pouring rain, while I went off somewhere underground with my friends.I think your explorations are fascinating, even to graveyards, miles from civilisation. Our last trip saw us at Nevadaville, Colarado, amongst many other places, and there also visiting the cemetery in seach of emigrant Cornish miners of which there were many. There is much of interest in old 'boneyards'! I will now view, and look forward to, the rest of your videos while I am on "lockdown" with coronavirus! Very professionally done with interesting old photos intersperced with the narrative. Great stuff!

    I love bumming around that area. Been to all these spots. The most interesting part of Aurora is the graveyard and the story of the gunfighter William E. Carder buried there. I found his stone. I even found a more recent grave there. I never could really see where the streets were it's so far lost to time. I took my wife there a few years ago in the old Bronco which handled it well, we went through Bodie and down the canyon, across a stream and met up with the road to Aurora. and if it's any consolation she had a kind of miserable time there too. She wanted me to assure her there weren't any rattlesnakes there but I could only say watch where you step. We haven't been back. Great to see the video though thanks you made an amazing video!

    I lived in Northern Nevada for 20 years. If you're out hunting for something, count on using a 4×4. Also wear thick pants and don't stick your hands near sage brush. Rattle snakes are everywhere. Make sure you bring water too. It's a dry, high desert and it's dangerous. Bring what you think you might need for an overnight outside stay like a simple tarp and blanket and extra water and food. Just hoping you stay safe next time. ✌️♥️

Also the fact that you are respecting the law and not taking any of the remnants (though not many to speak of) shows your respect for history and the need to preserve this legacy for future visitors. We did have a very difficult time going in and I should’ve recorded the path that we had to travel. It was horrible as far as the towns demise, I have been told that it was due to the removal of brick and use in San Francisco. No doubt souvenir hunters have also pilfered away pieces of the town.

    you'd have had an easier drive in if you'd gone through Bodie on the California side. in the late 80's, I worked at the Aurora Partnership mine on the other side of the hill from Aurora. I used to hike up into the extinct volcano to the north of the townsite and look for artifacts -- lots of metal stuff from the mining days, but better, tons of projectile points, trade beads, etc. from older times. iirc, Aurora was once the country seat of two counties, Esmeralda in NV and Mono in CA. The survey of the stateline through that area was done to determine which side of the line Aurora lay on.

    20:32 This old photo superimposed over modern day was amazing. I kept going back and forth just to try and see where everything was in the vast nothing that is now. I think most amazing was that main road is just gone. If you have no idea, you would not even know that used to be a road, much less an entire city.

    I think we have all seen THAT look from our wives that Sarah had on her face at 6:40 when we've dragged them out to the middle of nowhere. "We came all the way out here for that, and a pile of rocks!?!?" You are a good, patient, and understanding travel partner, Sarah! Don't worry about those scratches on your car - they will "buff right out"! 😂😉

    I someday wish to visit some of those ghost towns in the western USA, they fascinate me. All we have here is castles a few small towns had some more but batshit shit H and his other cronies destroyed them, and oh yes haunted forests. We do have one famous abandoned place, starts with an A and a few smaller places that have no desire to visit. I think I got this right, English isn't my first language. Anyone want to buy me a ticket from Frankfurt to the USA? j/k

    I've only recently stumbled across your channel, I am so glad I did! I find historical documentaries - which your videos definitely rival - so interesting I love learning about the history of places like Aurora and Bodie! Being a Brit I am unlikely to ever get to see many of the places you go too. It's absolutely fascinating, you do so much research into the actual history of the places you visit too and the camera work & editing is fantastic. Wonderful seeing the old pictures too. Looking forward to seeing more as I work my way through your video's. Keep up the good work guys!

    I lived in NV for 8 years. I explored a lot of the state myself, but two things I never went into the middle of nowhere without, one, my legging snake guards, and two, my GUNS. I wore a .44 mag Taurus Raging Bull on hip in a holster, and my AK-47 on a sling over my shoulder.

    I heard from an old cowboy that Aurora was dismantled during WW2 because it was built with brick, and those were repurposed. Unlike Bode which was built with cheap wood like fir and pine and had no repurpose.

    • @brentbarnhart5827

      What did they use the brick for? Steel I could see, do you have explanation?

    • @patroo2
      @patroo2 3 года назад

      @@brentbarnhart5827 The bricks went into construction of houses in Reno. Bodie didn't get completely dismantled, if I recall correctly, because the Cain family kept a watchman on the property. That kept it safe until it became a state park in later years.

    • @brentbarnhart5827
      @brentbarnhart5827 3 года назад

      @@patroo2 So the brick was just needed "domestically" during those years, not so much for military reasons, just as maybe becuase supplies were low? I was being kind of tunnel visioned, that makes sense. And if people just went there for the hell of it, private or govt. and just took bricks, even if abandoned buildings, that pretty much is theft if one is honest.... even if it is kind of victimless and a nothing burger. What are you doing? "Oh, nothing, just taking this abandoned building down and putting all the bricks in my truck for my new home, no big deal, nobody is inside at the moment." "okay, cool, if you need me, I'll be over here harvesting lumber under the same thought." "Cool" "yeah Cool" "if you need any help......... " (ha ha ha ha ha) "i was about to say the same thing." @@brentbarnhart5827 In the 50's and 60's, at least in California, actual used brick was all the rage for home facades. They used old brick, not the manufactured "distressed" brick they use now. I've heard that's what caused the buildings in Aurora to disappear.

    At 14:13 if you look carefully Jeff, there is a shiny new looking .45 ACP pistol cartridge to the left of the tin or steel cans. The aches and pains would require Laudanum. I was hit by an SUV recently and crushed my tibia plateau area as well as two ruptured discs in my back. I take Oxycodone to alleviate the pain and prefer it over alcohol.
