When the camels came over, their chief handler was Haji Ali, quickly re-named Hi Jolly by the soldiers. There is a fine book I have, THE MAKING OF THE MISFITS. Reno served primarily as the film company's base camp, but the book doesn't take us into Dayton as Jeff has done. Thank you, Jeff, for bringing those scenes really home for us. No movie queen was more entrancing than Marilyn, and no male star more deserving of the title King of Hollywood than Clark Gable.

When the Misfits first made its theatrical debut, I was not a fan. I thought it was a depressing subject and the fact that Monroe and Gable would soon die didn't add to my liking of it. Only years later did I come to appreciate its artistic merit and introspection into human nature. Thanks for the great behind the scenes locations for this American classic.

Thank you! I went to High School there in the late 80's. We lived in Stagecoach and Mark Twain. Have a baby sister buried in the graveyard. Lots of us worked in Virginia City and spent time combing secret and historical sites, including the Gold Hill ruins, salt flats and Sutro Tunnel. We natives (Native Americans) sorta found each other decades later and have some pretty interesting paranormal tales about Dayton... Glad you enjoyed!

I live in Dayton and found this video fascinating. The history museum is ‘manned’ (forgive my sexist language, lol) by volunteers, and sometimes they have to run out, so that probably explains why no one was there when you visited. And yes, those are wild horses-they meander around town occasionally, though usually they are found in the hills surrounding Dayton. (Gold Ranch Casino serves great breakfasts, by the way … I always take family guests there.) One consequence of the mining done in the area including Virginia City is that the runoff from the mines sent toxic waste into the Carson River here, so whereas they can fish the river back up in Carson City, we cannot do so down here. Great video. Thanks for the historical insights.
Oh, and in case anyone is interested, the old Odeon building is for sale. Last I checked they were asking $500,000. May have dropped since then.

Mary was the Owner of the original Union Hotel. If you look her up on find-a-grave there is a really good account of her life. Keep up the great work.

I've always loved Nevada history, I'm especially enthused about this video. Dayton is a hugely historical place in Nevada, I don't think enough people recognize this.
I worked at the paper with a guy who worked at the Farmall plant, he says they're the "Cadillac of Farm Tractors"
I worked with a different guy who's dad worked for NDOT, and he said they used to be able to walk right into Sutro Tunnel. I've wanted to go to the mouth, I've not yet made it there.
6 Mile Canyon Rd is a nice drive from Dayton to Virginia City.
    As always, another excellent video

I appreciate the old college trying to get up to the Sutro tunnel. I’ve been trying to get a view of it for many years and just have not been brave enough to trespass on the property . With its significance to the Comstock Lode my wish is that the owners would make some allowances for Lode enthusiasts to view. Maybe on a reservation basis?

I drive through Dayton every time when heading into Carson City. Also had a few accounts there. I learned more about that place in this video than I have in the last twenty years. If I remember right there was one day a year where they'd give a guided tour of the Sutro Tunnel site. I checked a few years ago and they weren't doing it that year. Would love to see all that. Terrific video as usual.

Thanks Jeff for showing us Dayton, Nevada and the history of the place. It looks like a quaint old town. That's a funny scene from the film. I remember the film "Misfits". Clark Gable was 59 there, he looks like he was 79. That's what smoking will do for people. He was a 3 pack a day smoker for years. Jeff you don't look 59; I thought you were in your mid 40s. You obviously don't smoke. I remember that wagon on "Bonanza".

In the Basement of the Bar (Used to be called the old corner bar) is the original water works for the small town with pipes labled to the buildings they went to. The original town well is on the patio of the Bar and when I worked there they had the tall folding steel doors with rifle slots to shoot from. It was constructed in 1860 by chineese and people were fearful of another Piute Indian uprising. It was a mercantile store originally but was used as a garage/ bar/ bar and restaurant and now it looks like a bar again. I leased the place for a couple of months in 1995 and thanks for bringing back some great memories Jeff.

I worked for an independent film company while living in Reno and we shot some scenes inside the Sutro Tunnel. The scene was a cave-in that we spent hours setting up just to last a few seconds. It took 2 takes to get it right. All day in the tunnel was an experience. Well we did go outside a few times for fresh air as the dust was a bit of a challenge. That must have been 1985. By the way folks, If you're going to just take pictures and leave only footprints, my experience has been Nobody Calls The Cops. They may even serve up some lemonade and conversation. Take a chance and Please be respectful.

Interesting episode, Jeff and my ears perked when I heard Sutro Tunnel Company because a Glen Ridge High School classmate in New Jersey where I mostly grew up is the owner of Sutro Tunnel Company. I saw Peter Leonard at our 20-year class reunion in 1993 and said his family owned a tunnel company in Nevada, he was running it and he lived in Virginia City. I saw him, again, in 2018 at our 45th HS reunion. I later looked him up and he is stated as the owner of Sutro Tunnel Company but when I tried to research the company, there wasn't much info on their company site or elsewhere. He was one of the smartest kids in our class and I don't doubt that he is the owner. Well, I found it very interesting when Sutro Tunnel Company was on your episode. This is Joe in Tucson who worked with your Dad and former resident of Ceres.

I have an ancestor on my mother's side who rode for the Pony Express. I'll now have to go back and refresh my memory about his life.

I could never appreciate this film, maybe it was all the back story of the actors and the mustang roping, oh well. Another great fact filled video. ❤
