      @@TheCheshireWanderer Nice one Mike. I love both wild camping and bushcraft. It is nice to be able to turn up a wood and to be able to make a few things that will make life easier and more comfortable. I have been given permission to use a woodland, so I have been busy making a few things for the camp area. It's like a lot of things, you can take pride in the things that you make and they can last some for some time. I have been making a fire pit today with a wooden wind defector that runs at the back of the fire. It came out OK for the type of wood I found. You will have have to let me know how your pine pitch turns out Mike 👍. Take care mate, all the best, Mark 😀🌲🔥.

      Hi C.R., I hope you are keeping well..... It's a good little project to do and make. I don't tend to use it too often as a glue purly for the fact that modern day glues are quicker, cleaner and often stronger. But knowing how to make it just in case you don't have glue, or wanting to use it for another primitive project makes the task of making it worth while. Thanks again C.R., have a great day, all the best Mark.

      @louiseleu Hi Louiseleu I hope you are keeping well 😀. Many thanks for watching and taking time to comment. I think a lot of people who live outside of the UK have the perception that we all speak the same here lol. Most tv programs tend to use a southern (london) type accent which is easier to understand, so over the years people come to believe that, that is the English accent. But I would say the accent here in Britain starts to change every 20 miles or so. You can start to hear slight differences as you travel short distances from home. I come from a place called Staffordshire, where for centuries we were the main place for the pottery industry in the country. Where I live is still called the Potteries, even though we don't produce much any more. Most fine bone china and household plates and pottery items etc were produced here and it is said that due to the area been highly skilled for the time, we didn't get an influx of outside workers. Most families had three generations working for the same family or firm and probably their ancestors worked there before them. Unlike places like liverpool or london that were dock areas, they had large populations moving there and brought their mix of accents and dialects which overtime helped to form their accent. We didn't have that, so people here still speak like we did hundreds of years ago. It is changing a bit now. As the generations die out and more people came to the area we started to loose our old dialect and the accent is softening. You should of heard us 50 years ago lol. Sorry to ramble on lol. I hope this helps, all the best Mark 😀👍.

    Another good one, but a few more details about how much dung to use and some clarification of the 2:1 ratio mix of resin to charcoal OR is it charcoal to resin? It wasn't clear. And why horse manure? What makes it a good binder? Is it the fiber content or is it something else, as well?

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  4 года назад +1

      Hi Rick, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I find when making the pitch a lot of it is down the materials available. The mix which I make is usually 2-3 parts resin to 1 part charcoal. But the ratios can change depending on its use. I used horse manure as that what was at hand at the time, but you could use rabbit droppings which is a common thing used or animal fur if that was the only thing you had. I was told it works similar to the fibre in fibre glass. It helps to hold the resin, making it stronger. You tend to about half the amount compared to the charcoal that was used. Then another thing that can be added is beeswax. Adding a small amount helps the finished pitch to be more flexible and easier to work with. It isn't too scientific. It is nice to get out and try a few different ratios of ingredients and see what works best for you :) I hope this helps, all the best, Mark :)

    Enjoyed the video as I've been wanting to try it but found only large batch methods on old films. You explained the process well and looks easy enough to try. For fire starter, do you think it would start with a ferro rod, lighters are always my last go to method:) Thanks Mark!

      @markbailey2981  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Tall Cedars, I hope you are keeping well. As always, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment :) I have tried to ignite it in the past with a ferro rod and found it to be hit or miss. Sometimes it would just melt and the odd time I got it to light. I used the resin from Scots pine, which isn't the best as it doesn't produce very much. But dependant on the type of pine you have in your area, it may be more flammable and ignite easier with a rod. It is always worth a try Have a great day, all the best, Mark. :)

    Great info and nicely presented! One question: how do you clean the sieve?

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  5 лет назад +2

      HI Terri, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) The sieve is usually a one use deal. I tend to re-warm anything that is left in the sieve, like bark and hard resin that didn't make it through and push it out and roll it into a ball. They make good fire starters. But even after that, the mesh is usually too clogged to do it again. I have started using tea strainers. You can buy them for about 50p, so I don't mind that. Thanks again, all the best, Mark :)

    Advice/help required
    I am trying to make some pitch sticks but it's not setting on the sticks.
    History - I collected the resin from freshly downed Scott's Pine, scraped directly off the stumps. I melted down the resin, not boiled, and strained through a tea strainer. I made the charcoal in a tin on the fire. The beeswax was shaved from a beeswax candle.
    I put the strained resin in a can and melted in a pot of boiling water to have more control of the heat. I added 3 parts resin to 1 part charcoal and 1/2 part beeswax.
    Heated gently and added charcoal and beeswax. I have kept stirring but it won't thicken or set and is really sticky still.
    I have tried putting the can of the mix in cold water to help cooling, got thicker but still not setting on a stick.
    Any advice?

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  4 года назад +2

      Hi John, I hope you are keeping well mate 👍. I find if the pitch is still too soft once the mixture has been put together, then I will add more charcoal until it thickens in consistency. Some say it feels like soft clay when it is been stirred. I have tried various amounts of charcoal to resin. I haven't made any in a while, but the last lot I made I added 50% charcoal to get it to set. It would start to soften in a little heat other wise. I suppose you can vary the amount the amount of ingredients to suit the kind of project that you are doing. I watched a video where a guy added 10% charcoal to get a very sticky glue. Everything that you said you did sounded spot on John. I would try adding more charcoal and see if it helps it to harden. I hope this helps mate. Take care during these times, all the best, Mark 🔥🌲 .

    Could I use this pine pitch stuff to make a torch? For say an emergency light sorce like in a cave. Or will it burn up too fast??

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  4 года назад

      Hi Adventures 4YourSoul, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) Yes, the pine pitch is highly flammable. I perhaps wouldn't go through all the whole process of making the pitch if you were only looking to make a torch. I have used pine resin torches in the past and they work really well. They do only have a short burn time unless you can find a good amount of resin. But in an emergency it would be better than nothing. One thing to consider would also be the drip or running as it is burning. It runs like burning plastic... so making sure you don't catch your hand or arm is important. Some people carve out a fungi and place the pine resin in that, or you can split a stick and slot in chunks of resin on top of a pine cone. There a quite a few good descriptions on line how to make the different types of torches. I hope this helps, all the best, Mark :)
