Thanks very much for checking it out, I answered your question, and yes, i have vigorously tested my pitch glue, with axes, knives and even an adze, with no failure, even made a flint ulu and only glued in the blade, and cut up a squash and tomato with it,No failure. Loved your vids man and a huge fan
The only time I ever made pine pitch glue was to patch a hole in an old worn out G.I. canteen I dropped on the rocks. I used pine resin, charcoal and some creek sand. It held up very well. Great video Dave. God bless...
antother great vid Dave.. my kids an i 8 an 10 located here in north eastern wyoming do go out an practice your lessons and usually have a great out come. thank u so much and my kids love every minute of it. have u ever read the bull cook books and practical recipes. lots of good stuff there also. keep them coming dave. thumbs up.
I certainly respest that brother. I wish I could attend your school. Damn missouri is a little far away. Honestly I think your decisions throughout dual survival were the most logical and safe. Sorry to bring back the past but in my opinion you were the only reason I kept watching that show. Sure it's tv and somewhat scripted but you made the show as far as I'm concerned. Glad your doing well with the PF School. Your a legend in my eyes
i hear you, its just you 3 gentlemen (yourself, ray and les) are my go to guys for any quandaries i may have about bushcraft. thank you for the knowledge.
again dave great video I keep about 4 or 6 pitch twigs in my kit for fire as you said a flame exstender it works great in winter because it is waterproof and burns supper hot keep up the great work keep yur powder dry and eyes along the skyline
I just use tin cans a coffee can and a soup can but I know what ya mean and it came out awesome...I use pitch to cover cuts works real good ..keep it up dave...still waiting ...a journal of the igloo series
I've heard people recommend full-on grinding the charcoal with a mortar and pestle (I imagine it's close to the same result as using the stick?). I've also heard it's better to use powdered ungulate (horse, specifically) dung rather than cat-tail. Might I ask your thoughts on that, dave? As always, thanks for the great video
Thanks again. I've seen pitch glue made and your recipe looks better than mine. I've also heard (but not tried) using egg shells for a enhancer and binding for pitch glue. Any thoughts? Tx.
here in finland spruce produces like 50% more sap than pine. Do spruce grow there ? If it does, doesnt it produce enough sap or isnt it as strong as pine? Exellent video Dave
As a replacement for cat tail, what other binders would you suggest? What about synthetic pitch, perhaps made from paracord/bankline? Then Add charcoal and a binder....
Dave, this is a VERY interesting video! I never realized the sap was mixed with charcoal and a fluffy material to make pitch. If cattail isn't available, what other things can be used?
Just curious. Is there any natural material you know of that dissolves pine sap? I just mean something you use to get it off your hands so that you can be more comfortable. Particularly in a sustainability situation. It always means alot when you reply brother. Thanks.
another great vid Dave,I have not found any yarrow in my area, but I have found a plant that has the smell of sage.when I put that in the smuage pot, seem to to run the sqeeter off.any way thank you for taking the time to mke these vids
I don't use the double boiler style but just boiling. I use a coffee can and boil the pitch. Impurities float usually and the pitch looks like a lava lamp. Everything else is pretty much the same. Lots less flammable.
I just watched you shotgun comparison video and was wondering if you had any news on the M-6 Scout reproductions you spoke of. Any news? Would love to see a reasonable price on it :)
Can't you just make pitch like this by making pine charcoal? I don't think it would have the binder in it but it would have the charcoal. It probably takes longer too but I guess you could make more of it. Do you find the pine sap on wounds to trees?
Hi Dave i did a vid on making spruce pitch glue, using spruce pitch, charcoal and deer dung. Tho i used a unique method to strain and melt mt pitch. If you get time check out my vid, since you said you cant let it light on fire or it ruins it. The vid is Making spruce pitch glue for a bone bladed knife
Dave, Firstly love the videos man keep 'em coming. 2ndly, have you ever thought of or done a video about a scotch eyed auger? pretty awesome bushcraft tool to throw in the pack!
Lewis and Clark had an iron frame ,collapsible boat that was covered with sewn together animal skins and they needed to water proof the skins but couldn't find any pine trees so they abandoned they boat and made canoes from cottonwood trees.
I am trying to think of something you can possibly glue out there in the wilderness, that would make a cool ending to this vid, like a canoe or something. Yea I know that is a big project though.
Interesting idea. Don't know if it'll work, but it sounds an awful lot like a trick on Junglecrafty's channel for re-attaching a machete handle (using a ziplock bag, if I remember right). Melting tape or rubber bands might work, too (ranger bands cut from tire inner tubes seem like a good possiblity). Again, good idea.
This is very good education Dave, thank you. We dont have cat-tail in Norway, but perhaps the finer hairs of a moose skin will do, I,ll try. Thanks again :-)
"Resin is normally red, clear, and hard. On the other hand, sap is yellowish or white, sticky and gummy."....."Sap is really the sugar... When a tree is cut or when a branch is cut, resin oozes out and clogs the broken area just like the blood clotting in wounds." -Differencebetween website
Les Stroud is great, he lives off the grid about 3 hours north of me. Dave you should watch survivourman, its real, which is why the guy starves for 10 days each episode.
if I remember right they used something similar in mid evil times to pour on invaders at the castle gates, So I would imagine if u get this on your skin it would be like getting hot gooey lava that would result in a pretty nasty burn
is there something that can be found in nature to use in place of the can? I'm trying to imagine this being made by Native Americans or other primitive tribal people before they had access to metal.
Hey Dave, check out this company when you get a chance. They have a tent system that only weights 14lbs and will revolutionize the way camping is done for future generations. google "tentsile" and check out their tents! i am not a representative for them, i am just a happy customer.
Not to sound like a wimp, but wouldn't it be better to wear gloves for this so you won't worry about contamination of other projects while you're multitasking?

Good to see the old bids are back. Thanks for the knowledge brothet
I hope you'll make a video showing the pitch being used. That would really be interesting.
antother great vid Dave.. my kids an i 8 an 10 located here in north eastern wyoming do go out an practice your lessons and usually have a great out come. thank u so much and my kids love every minute of it. have u ever read the bull cook books and practical recipes. lots of good stuff there also. keep them coming dave. thumbs up.
Dave I'd just like to say thanks. Your videos are inspiring and relaxing to watch. Thanks.

Great skills put in action. Gives me something to forage for when it cools a bit. Thnak you Dave, Terry
Well done, love the vids. There is also birch bark oil/tar, lots of uses for a common man kit.
Just saw that you mentioned rabbit, which will work fine out here. I don't have a lot of cattails in AZ but plenty of rabbit. Thx.
i hear you, its just you 3 gentlemen (yourself, ray and les) are my go to guys for any quandaries i may have about bushcraft. thank you for the knowledge.
Dave, your experience is all the scientific evidence I need.
Great tutorial. We miss watching you on TV.
Thank you Dave. Great tutorial.

Thank you sir for the Idea .... Looking for things to use to make my own style of camp candles
As a replacement for cat tail, what other binders would you suggest? What about synthetic pitch, perhaps made from paracord/bankline? Then Add charcoal and a binder....
awesome vid Dave
Look out ole blue jeans... Your about to get some old time patchin... LOL
A great video Dave... Thanks.
Dave, this is a VERY interesting video! I never realized the sap was mixed with charcoal and a fluffy material to make pitch. If cattail isn't available, what other things can be used?
well u have a new fan here!! i had a lot of time growing up to be on my own in the woods and it was great. i really miss my country life!
Good stuff Dave. As always
Just curious. Is there any natural material you know of that dissolves pine sap? I just mean something you use to get it off your hands so that you can be more comfortable. Particularly in a sustainability situation. It always means alot when you reply brother. Thanks.
great video...I use rabbit droppings instead of cattails but everything else the same. keep up the good work
Thank you for another great video. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Dave .
Great stuff again Dave! You're missed on TV!
another great vid Dave,I have not found any yarrow in my area, but I have found a plant that has the smell of sage.when I put that in the smuage pot, seem to to run the sqeeter off.any way thank you for taking the time to mke these vids
Interesting video. Do the cat tail fibers liquify or do the cat tail fibers act similar to fiber glass strands that hold the glue together?
Thanks! :)

Great Vid Brotha!
Glad I found your video. I’ve heard of recipes using animal scat as the binder but I’d rather not use that if I don’t have to lol.
I just watched you shotgun comparison video and was wondering if you had any news on the M-6 Scout reproductions you spoke of. Any news? Would love to see a reasonable price on it :)
Nice beard man. I can see the potential in it.

If you get time check out my vid, since you said you cant let it light on fire or it ruins it. The vid is Making spruce pitch glue for a bone bladed knife
if you use a double boiler method you get a more consistent more thorough melt that is easier to control.
What do you use that pitch for. I use bee wax and pin sap to make glue. Is it the same thing?
What other material would be good to use as a binder other than cattail?
U can use moose poop instead of cat tail
Good stuff man
Dave,
Firstly love the videos man keep 'em coming. 2ndly, have you ever thought of or done a video about a scotch eyed auger? pretty awesome bushcraft tool to throw in the pack!
Hey Dave, Today where I live it is about 100 outside. How did 18th century folk keep cool? You should do a vid on it
Great stuff sir, Instead of a stick could you store it in a tin like an Altoids can?
how did you harvest the sap you just axe the side of a tree then go back in a day or two and pull it off?
Lewis and Clark had an iron frame ,collapsible boat that was covered with sewn together animal skins and they needed to water proof the skins but couldn't find any pine trees so they abandoned they boat and made canoes from cottonwood trees.
This is the guy from Dual Survival right??
I am trying to think of something you can possibly glue out there in the wilderness, that would make a cool ending to this vid, like a canoe or something. Yea I know that is a big project though.
So what if you don't have a can? Like, well, the last 150,000 years of pine pitch glue being used sans the last 350 years?
great vid just a sidenote on archery
any chance of an flu-flu vid in the future ß can´t find any in your channel
cheers
Great video. Your the master!
Why was the grain alcohol video removed? Did ATF do it or did you?
it wasn't removed
what is your craziest camping experience?
can you make a whole video about it?
This is very good education Dave, thank you. We dont have cat-tail in Norway, but perhaps the finer hairs of a moose skin will do, I,ll try. Thanks again :-)
Say you do make it too hard and it cracks. Can you toss it back in the pot and remake it, or do you need fresh sap?
Could I use spruce sap?
Could you use spruce sap? Sorry but i have mostly spruces near me
What were some of the uses for the pitch?
You can also use it for rosin for your home made fiddle .
Do you have videos on collecting pine sap?
If you hear it to much to the glassy appearance can it be re melted and remixed?
what do you use a pitch stick for?
Unfortunately, in MN, it is illegal to pick cattails. Gotta find something else to use here.
"Resin is normally red, clear, and hard. On the other hand, sap is yellowish or white, sticky and gummy."....."Sap is really the sugar... When a tree is cut or when a branch is cut, resin oozes out and clogs the broken area just like the blood clotting in wounds." -Differencebetween website
would it be possible to make a torch from pine pitch?
Hey dave is the puzzle piece tattoo for autism awareness by any chance?
Dave, what can be used as an effective substitute for cattails?
I always learn something at your site. As always, thanks’ for taking the time to make this video! And I support this site. ~M~
pine pitch was used for waterproofing the hide glue and sinew if I remember correctly from the boyers bible volume1
can you use dryer lint inplace of the cattail?
Is that stuff "waterproof?"
pretty awsome !!! thanx.
Les Stroud is great, he lives off the grid about 3 hours north of me. Dave you should watch survivourman, its real, which is why the guy starves for 10 days each episode.
could I use something like rawhide or rawhideglue to improve pine pitch?( having truble with brittle pitch)
holy crap your oak leaves over there are huge
Thanks for the video I am using this pitch to glue arrowheads onto my wooden arrows.
COOL LOVE IT.
How about you grind the charcoal/ash with your palms it would turn out to be finer
have you ever tested a pvc bow
That saddens me a little, I have always thought much more highly of Les Stroud than most of the supposed experts on TV.
Anything you would want to use glue for, really. I know they used it for hafting arrow and spear points (along with sinew).
if I remember right they used something similar in mid evil times to pour on invaders at the castle gates, So I would imagine if u get this on your skin it would be like getting hot gooey lava that would result in a pretty nasty burn
How cool is that? Very! Keep up the good words.
Galltvål is great for cleaning. In dont whats it called in english
Thats funny we just taught this at our survival camp today.
If you can not find cattails old dry deer or rabbit droppings smashed up will work
is there something that can be found in nature to use in place of the can? I'm trying to imagine this being made by Native Americans or other primitive tribal people before they had access to metal.

Yes
nice
a day in the life. journal of the yurt i believe
Not to sound like a wimp, but wouldn't it be better to wear gloves for this so you won't worry about contamination of other projects while you're multitasking?
Is that how they made Flaming Arrows in ye olde days?
He has many almost any video where he's scouting., he's collecting pine sap when he finds it . Its all about possum mentality.
