I’ve been teaching people how to play guitar for over 15 years and noticed a common theme among most of my students. They can play some songs, know some scales, and most can do some lead work. The problem comes when it’s time to play to play rhythm and lead with a metronome or a drummer. While metronomes are great they can be more difficult to start with and to be honest, a little boring. That’s where your new drummer I’ve found comes into play (pun intended)!
Jamming with a solid drummer will have a huge impact on your ability, It will literally improve every aspect of your guitar playing!! Want to be able to lay down a fat rhythm groove or bust out a perfectly pocketed solo? Then, understanding how to play with a drummer is crucial! Don't get me wrong, learning to play your favorite song is great; but playing that song while locked in with the rhythm section, now we're talking!
If you've ever wanted to play in a band, being able to lay it down with a drummer will get you the gigs! However, showing up to play with a drummer if you never have can feel pretty intimidating. Just imagine, having another person stare at you while you fumble through trying to find your groove. So what do you do to prepare? Well, this is where the new lesson I’ve created comes in!
In this lesson, I’ll teach you the basic fundamentals on how to start playing with a drummer in the safety of your own home. We’ll start by just learning to listen for the drummer’s groove. Once you're able to hear the patterns being played on the hi hat, kick, and snare, you'll learn to sync your picking hand to the groove that the drummer is playing. This creates the feel that gets everybody on the dance floor in your local bar or head banging at the nearby stadium.
What if you just want to jam at home and never want to play with a real drummer or band? Not to worry, this lesson is perfect for that too. Just download the tracks to your computer and away you go! It’s even more fun with a bumping stereo, it will be about as close as you can get to the real thing! Fun for days!
Make sure to click the link above for the drum loop I’ve created that goes with the lesson so you can rock out too. Happy grooving!

This video made me realize that playing simple stuff with drums and good rhythm can sound much better than just playing really complex stuff alone

THIS is Extremely Important for timing AND Songwriting. You will be amazed at how good your timing will get. Eventually, you will be able to play on the beat, behind in the pocket or in front to create a rushed feeling. This will then Impregnate a Million original song Ideas in your head. Great Lesson and true. I must have written about 200 hundred songs off this crappy drum machine in the keyboard, I used to have. Just keep changing drum patterns and tempo. Metronome works better for drilling leads, scales and exercises from my experience anyway.

Only 18k views? This is probably one of the most important lessons for an aspiring guitarist. I bet if you changed the title to "One of the most important lessons for an aspiring guitarist" you'd get 1 M views before the end of the year. C'mon man, you've got the whole package except the proper hook to turn people onto your great content. Thanks for the lesson, you have no idea how important it was to me.

Wow, Papastache, you never cease to educate me right where I need it most. Like another comment said, I have been playing for 7 or 8 years but only in my bedroom with DVD courses like Brett's amazing stuff, but never played with a real drummer cause I've been kind of scared to. I have a looper pedal that I've hardly ever used, but after watching this video I dove in to using it and am having a blast playing along with the drum beats and I'm feeling a breakthrough coming on. Thank you so much Papastache, I will always be in your debt.

      I feel what you're saying ..
I've just let my self grow organically, and for sure I'm behind the curve for the 2 decades of love and want I've got for the guitar...
A true Wannabe I am, or maybe im just a blurry scam with a busted left hand. I've still never learned to play mine or another person's song, but me and the cords we stumbled along.

Probably the most important lesson you've ever put up. No matter what your playing you MUST BE IN TIME or you are just making noise. It has always been painful for me to work on timing and not nearly as exciting as working out a solo BUT RHYHM is everything. Thanks for putting this up because those who practice this will be better musicians! Jimi was a monster rhythm player...

Spot on again Brett. Here we are (many of us) fiddling with our lead, making it more complicated, but it still doesn't sound good, cos we forgot that it's got to rock!

This reminds me of years ago when me, a bedroom player who's familiar with only backing tracks, met and jam with my drummer for the first time. He started drumming simple track like this one (he was a beginner but a very hard worker) in a rehearsal room and I had no idea what to play though I felt like I really should've played something, haha. Now I'm relearning to play and this lesson really helps.

Brett another awesome lesson. You never stop amazing me. I finally stopped and thanked you for helping me get back into playing after playing everyday for along time every day until I lost my brother to an eggressive form of brain cancer and and I explained for the first time to anyone outside of my circle why I stopped playing and sold and gave away most of my collection of gear until finally realizing that it cost me alot of hard work and alot of time and money along with lots of good luck to build a nice selection of axes and amps, along with every pedal a guitarist dreams of. After watching this lesson I've learned there is 2 more things I want or need. Beat box or something close and a looper. But thanks again for a great lesson.

Thanks! Did a search on google for how to learn to play guitar with a drummer (or something along those lines) and your youtube came up. I've just now, after years and years, started learning my music theory and working on technique and scales and playing with a metronome. I realised I really needed to learn to hear the drums and how to play with them. Had the good luck to by chance see a Beat Buddy pedal for sale locally and bought and can tell already that its making a big difference but I still feel like really hearing the drumming and being constantly aware of where I am in the count is vital. Your video gave me some good ideas for how to start doing that in a fun way beyond playing scales. More on this subject, or maybe on tying in with the bass line would be much appreciated.

They can immediately start having alot of fun on their guitar with the new chords and stuff they learnd, and develop a good feel for the music and riddim. I wish i knew how to play together with my drumcomputer months ago
Name it: must know strumming basics to enjoy you’re practices.

Can you do a guitar lesson on the song mountain dew by the stanley brothers? I think the guitar in their version of the song is amazing but I cant find a good lesson or tutorial on it. I love your videos and I pretty much learned how to play guitar by watching you and marty schwarts. If you have the time to do a lesson on it I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Love to see part 2 and 3 and 4 to this! :) I seem to have a blind spot to this sort of thing. I can play along with the kick and snare or do 16ths when the drum are "rolling about" but it seems "too easy" sounding when I do it :-/ but it does feel like if I do more I am out of my element and I lose my way or have no anchor.

Hi Papastache, Great video. Can you please make a video lesson on playing leads with a drummer ? Example, some licks played and how to match with the drummer... Some tips on this would be very helpful for other guitarists.. There is no lesson on this in youtube.. Many thanks in advance.
