  • If ya know, ya know! We finally took delivery of our ‪@shopsabre‬ Sidekick 10 Plasma Cutting table!
    For those that don't know, a plasma cutter is the closest thing we have to an actual lightsaber here on earth. It uses a high-voltage electrical arc to split atoms creating plasma, which is then forced through metal with compressed air in a really tight beam of metal slicing energy. The CNC part, or computer numeric control, is where this technology is taken to the next level. Parts can be designed in a drafting software then sent to the included computer where its turned into a set of movement instructions for all the motors responsible for moving the gantry around the table. The level of precision possible with a machine like this is incredible, not to mention part repeatability.
    Tay went back and forth about this move for quite a while but having been a fabricator for almost 15 years, he saw how a machine like this can do things that are either too time consuming or just plain impossible by hand. We are so stoked to see what becomes possible here at the studio with a machine like this. What should we build first?

    I have had my Sidekick 4x8 since 2014 and it has been super dependable. Get some fine consumables for anything under 16 gauge for best results. If you have any questions, I can always help. Shop Sabre hands down has the best support!

      That's super good to hear! Yeah, I've already reduced down to 45A consumables for a smaller kerf. I appreciate you offering your help, these things have quite the learning curve, and even though Ive done a fair bit of drafting and a little programming, this is a whole new realm. Cheers mate! - Tay

    Congratulations on the table! I have been looking at buying their 4x8 table for a bit. The initial expense is hard to get past but I’m sure it will be worth it in the long term. Being able to watch you go through the processes definitely helps. Keep up the videos! Thanks

      Thank you! You know, I researched and researched for CNC plasmas and went back and forth a million times of whether i should pull the trigger. Thankfully ive taken care of my credit over the years and was able to finance it. Now that im in the full swing of my business, i barely notice the payment. The machine is a huge asset to the shop and im about to feed it some complicated parts with $$ making potential so we'll see how that goes! Ill keep the camera rolling... lol
      Cheers! - Tay

      Thats rad!! I may have gone a little crazy with the 5x10 but i currently have a 4x8 sheet laying on it and room to cut small stuff too so thats handy... So far, Shop Sabre has been super responsive to my calls and emails which is very assuring after spending all this coin on a machine. Thank you! - Tay

    Do you still love this table?
    I ordered the same one..
    Pros.. cons? Things i should know??
    Appreciate you.

    • @LiftArcStudios
      @LiftArcStudios  2 года назад +1

      I definitely still love this table, i use it almost every day. If i have any down time (which almost never happens) i just think of cool parts i want to make and just burn em, its so fun! It pays for it self quite easily.
      As far as pros and cons, we actually made a video about that it's called ups and downs of owning a cnc plasma cutter. It's been a little while though so its probably time to make a revisit video.
      If you can spring for it, definitely get the collision detection torch holder, its amazing. And get the biggest table/plasma cutter you can afford that way you dont have to turn away as many jobs due to limitations but of course that all depends on the goals of your venture.
      Cheers! - Tay

      Thank you, of course! I love sharing my journey with the community! The machine is holding up fantastically. Cutting true, working smoothly. Im learning new tips and tricks every day! Its built like a tank though so i imagine it will last quite a while. Cheers! - Tay

    Cool cutter!! My Question is, You installed the new machine under the line drive does that mean you do not plan on using the old machines?

    • @LiftArcStudios
      @LiftArcStudios  3 года назад +1

      Keen eye! So, its actually under the main shaft of the line drive. What was done in this shop at least is power was taken off laterally with a belt to a jack shaft which essentially moved the shaft to either side of the machine. When/if i take on the endeavor of reinstating some of these old machines, ill probably do the same thing. I saved all the jack shafts, pulleys and levers so theres that. Cheers - Tay

    I hope you are running the torch cables through the Dragchain now?

    • @LiftArcStudios
      @LiftArcStudios  3 года назад +1

      Well, being that the torch has about a foot of Z axis movement, securing the torch cables to the Dragchain is a little tough. Currently, i have the plasma lead hanging from spring loaded cables above the machine so they move with the cutting head. Seems to be working well so far!

      Ill likely post a video soon going over what its been like to learn the machine, issues I've had, things I've noticed from cut to cut, etc. I will say all the issues I've had so far are on my end with the software or choosing the right settings, the machine is rock solid, super smooth and precise.
