Manmohan Singh was an appointed Prime Minister, not an elected one. A wise economist, he was aware of his limitations. Notwithstanding, his tenure in public office was eventful: liberalisation of the Indian economy, Indo-US nuclear deal, devaluation of Indian rupee, and conversations with Pakistan’s Musharraf. In Episode 1581 of Cut The Clutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta recalls his interactions with Dr Singh-filled with candor, intellect, and wisdom.

Neither 12:40 Neither of the two was wrong. Quite possible that PVNR would have told MMS that the latter would be held accountable, while in front of the party he would have taken the onus of any blame. That's what a leader would do by being stern with his men, but at the same time be the shield to protect his team.

Just imagine your college professor joins government bcz of his academic excellence and changes the course of the history forever. We often fail to appreciate how monumental 1991 was-it was our economic 1947, and in some ways, even more significant. Most of our parents grew up with very little compared to what we have today. The biggest mistake the UPA did between 2004-2014 was making Pranab Mukherjee the FM of India. Like it or not, he completely ruined the fiscal deficit. On the contrary, if Mr Chidambaram would have walked on Dr Singh's steps, then so much more could have been achieved but him as FM was able to hold a command. The 26/11 Mumbai terror attack forced a cabinet reshuffle and Dr Singh was left helpless. Also DMK's corruption in central cabinet ministries led the govt down. Governance at the end of the day is a complex task. All respect for Dr Manmohan Singh for his contributions to the Indian economy

It is interesting that Manmohan Singh gets the credit for all the good things as an FM, but not Narasimha Rao who was the PM and provided the real political backing without which none of the reforms would have been possible. Also, India's reforms were borne out of necessity and not a genuine belief in free markets and entrepreneurship, as evident from the failure of the farms reforms bill.

This is how PV Narasimha Rao wanted things to be. He was truly the most patriotic PM of india who designed the reforms such that he could deflect all the glory and blame on others while keeping the government stable. Mr. Rao wanted to give the impression that he is following the socialist ways of the Gandhi dynasty while dismantling their worst of the socialism. And that’s the price of his selflessness that no one remembers him well. Please read the “The man who remade india” to know more about the genius and patriotism of Mr. Rao

While it is understandable that Gandhi family and Congress limited his ability to do bigger and better things for the country, the fact is that in 2009 Lok Sabha elections, he had led the UPA to power, and, but for his self-perceived indebtedness to Gandhi family, he had emerged a stronger leader. For some reason, during UPA 2, he appeared to have lost the will to steer the country in the right direction. It appeared that he was keeping the PM's chair warm for Rahul Gandhi to occupy it. There are many things that he did for which we Indians should be grateful, but some of these faded from public memory in the public perception of him becoming a weak leader. Dr Manmohan Singh was a true gentleman and as we all know, politics is no profession for a gentleman. Thankyou SG for another great video.

    Respect to PM MMS.
For last days many have reminded good works of MMS.Also,We can't forget bad under his reign, accountability as per constitution post can't be subjective.
1.Vidarbha farmer suicides and mismanaged loan waver where all money went to Power party which MMS didn't stop and not even single media house raised issue. SG too was complisite.
2.Terrorism spread and attacks on India with no credible push back.National secutiry undermined, most weakest National secutiry apparatus under him.
3.Curruption, bad banking, worst political authority, same values which he respected were tarred by his local congress leaders and greedy ministers.
4.He supported creation of favorable journalist of regime (Durbari Journalist). Padma awards to SG, Barkha Dutt and Rajdeep Sardesai was example of this. TOI,Express,Hindu (Print Durbari) supported UPA due to its gangajamuni tehzeeb ideological coherence. Due to this Journalist took time to recognize subalterization of Indian polity.
5.Law and order never given priority by him, justice system rotten.
    6. Never appreciated statecraft due to overdose of academic demeanour and never took cognizance of India's civilization abilities due to his ideological blindness to Nehruvian socialism.
7.All rights based law is indication that our system is not expansive enough to cater demand. In other words people were forced to beg by principle of Nehruvian socialism.

    2 points:
    1. What Narasimha Rao & Dr. MMS said were both true in my opinion. Dr. MMS was being held for the result that if it doesn’t work out, he will be scapegoated, but while he was at it he would shield him from any political interference. This is trust at its best.
    2. Regarding the de-dollarisation part. I don’t think China would dump everything in one day, but it is a leash on which China would keep US in check while it diversifies its exports to other countries. Slowly but surely as they grow and cross that GDP number of USA, they can claim they are number 1 and then they get the benefits of being the top dog in the world. This should happen before their population collapse comes in the next decade. Else they will lose their chance atleast for a century. I think somewhere in this process India has an opportunity to move far beyond its current state by being a reliable middleman between the 2 worlds.
Anyway, staying on point. RIP Dr Manmohan Singh. For once it felt like in India being highly educated doesn’t preclude one from being in politics.

The worst accusation hurled at him was during the 2017 Gujarat elections, PM Modi, hinted that Manmohan Singh was conspiring with Pakistan against India. Manmohan singh asked for an apology which Modi never did.
The stark contrast between the two, One can do anything to gain power, the other did everything he possibly can while he was in power.
Also, what could've been emphasized on here was, how Rahul Gandhi took piss over the UPA2 govt to set himself up as the pre-eminent leader. He was quite delusional into thinking that he can wash the party off of corruption stints, throwing the veterans under the bus and emerge as a leader for the masses.
He actively antagonized the PMO and created a policy paralysis at the centre. Sonia Gandhi fell ill in 2011 and was undergoing treatment in the US, and the rest 3 years of the UPA2 Govt were a free for all.

They would have taken credit by now if social media is not there 😅. If PV and manmohan worked again from 2004 to 2014 they would have created miracles with much needed infrastructure development in the country and no need to wait till 2014-24.

Nehru had the foresight to comprehend how disastrous it would become if india embarked upon laissez faire capitalism ; the present crony capitalism has created 2 parasitic oligarchs who together can’t even name 1 of their product to be world class and still they rank top in the list of richest men of the world. Unbridled capitalism will create mess in india because of the caste-communal character of indian business and politics. New economic policy was suppose to gradually integrate indian economy with world economy by enabling absorption of transferred technology but india still continues to beg for foreign technology in every area. The ever widening gap between the rich and poor, the burgeoning unemployment rate and the dependency of nearly 80% of the citizens on doles is sufficient to indicate how poorly india has managed FDI and its economy. When india was treading the path of mixed economy it started sliding towards extreme socialism and now when it took the path of free economy it has rapidly degenerated into a crony-capitalist oligarchy mafia in which the state-aided oligarchs have started to indulge in arms supply and drugs on a scale which will put even the established drug lords like El-Chapos’ to shame. The credit for initiating the gradual abolishing of controls should actually go to Rajeev Gandhi for the budget of 1985 and it was initiated voluntarily unlike the reforms of 1992, because the latter was forced upon India by the IMF which arm twisted Narasimha Rao the than PM into liberalisation in lieu of loans to bail out the indian economy from the abyss ….

Shekhar sir could corner him in a flight and received a polite response. I'm craving to hear our current respected PM thoughts without the script and paid media. We have a lot to ask. He has a lot to answer. Democracy mein sirf Mann ki Baat nahi chalti. It should be Jann ki Baat. Alas! Don't see that happening anytime soon.

His predecessor Atal Behari Vajpayee did a commendable by privatizing PSUs like BALCO; VSNL; Maruti Udyog; IPCL etc. He failed in this crucial aspect of economic reforms which must also be mentioned.
