Two weeks ago I purchased my first keyboard Yamaha DGX-660. I did not think before I made this purchase. I usually search for info before I even start looking at one item over the others. This time I did not. Plus! The salesman didn't even discuss different keyboards with me. He should have. I also may have been in a hurry for one.
I do like the all-around appearance of the GDX-660. Plastic! Wood would have been too expensive. It would have been nice though.
Here is my reason for purchasing this keyboard. I had an abusive wife. I slipped into depression in April 1993. I haven't worked since. I also watch RUclips and enjoy singing along with the videos. A few weeks ago I was suddenly struck with a strong feeling of being lonely. So, I figured I would buy me a keyboard to keep the loneliness away. I went into debt for several hundreds of dollars. So, I am hoping this keyboard will do a good job for me. I hope within a year to be playing it very well.
I will try to give updates on my progress.
    Peace and God bless.

Good luck man! but... the best way to get out of debt? Stop spending, and get a job. Perhaps a job that makes you happy. :) Also if you want to learn piano, the BEST advice I can share with you is, don't learn songs, learn music theory, then you can learn ANY song by yourself using it... and maybe turn that pain into beautiful music, and earn even more money. haha

I really hope you find solace in the sound like I have. I also bought the same keyboard in a rush, but thankfully (by chance) I made a good choice.
I wanted to say that learning to play the piano/keyboard has done WONDERS for my emotional health... not sure what exactly it is, but it’s a VERY rewarding instrument.
Memorizing emotional sounding songs is very therapeutic for me and is the only thing that truly makes me lose track of time.

First of all BIG THANKS for posting this straight forward honest review! I was wrestling over purchasing either of these DGX660B, Clivanova701, 705, or 709. My biggest concerns with the DGX660B was the plastic look, music rest, lack of PA jacks, small 6" speakers, and headphone jack behind the unit. You hit on them all addressing my many concerns. Thanks!

Yes, especially if you value the arranger function in digital keyboards. Also the direct recording output feature is something I have been wanting for years. I agree that Yamaha has nearly perfected the acoustic sound of orchestral instruments, especially the brass horns, brass reeds and wood reeds with good string sounds and excellent organ sounds.

I've been using the DGX-660 since the very first time it was released. Overall it's a good digital piano for its price and performance. However, in 2019, it may not worth it anymore, being outperformed by the newer arranger-piano models in the same price range.
If you're just looking for a decent piano sound and build quality, then the DGX is for you

I still have a DGX-660 and agree with your review (I really love the "Sweet Soprano Sax"). I have since upgraded to a Yamaha P515 which allows me to use a iPad for voice configuration with splits or layers and has a very nice music rest. I have added a small sub-woofer (Kinyo) which makes a big difference. I like the textured keys and action and while it does not have some of the extras of the 660 it is very satisfying to play and feels, looks and sounds more professional. Keep up the good reviews!

This seems to be the only 88 key piano with pretty good acoustic bass, trumpet and sax voices, which I need, for anywhere near $800. It will drop in price even more when the new model comes out, at which time I might grab one off of Amazon for $700. I don't know why people try to compare the DGX660 to 61-key full-fledged arranger boards or to straight piano keyboards. If you don't need 88 keys AND all the voices, on a limited budget.....

For the part about "DGX not lasting"... I've had my DGX 640 since 2009, and it's been reliable, played about half an hour to an hour every day or every other day. A great product, unfortunately an old product. Hopefully they return for this brand with a newer sample and keys quality though. Overall, not a mistake to buy back then. Now I suppose there are newer products. Still will always love my old DGX640 :)

I love dgx serias becouse combination of real piano keyboard with a power of styles, accomponiments, voices etc.
Becouse of that dgx must not stay behind tech technologies progress, and there was a big leap the last 4 years.
Also, there is alot of learning expirience that need to be implamented, for example: the memory size should not be limited and depending on external memory card capacity, the speekers should be much powerfull, the keyboard need improvment etc.
I realy hope yamaha will invest and release the next dgx generation shortly.

To be honest, Jeremy, I find myself agreeing with a number of things you say, but a lot of the criticisms you make do not (imo) carry any real weight. There are three criticisms you make that I agree with; 1) it doesn't run on batteries, 2) wrong place for the headphone socket, and 3) assigning events to the pedals. The initial pricing for the DGX 660 at $1,299 is not placing the instrument within 'premium' status, where you would expect to pay anything from $3,000 upwards for an instrument.
Is the Yamaha DGX-660 still worth buying today? Of course it is. Absolutely! Here in the UK you can buy the instrument for £670, and for an instrument as versatile as the DGX-660, that is a real good price. It has excellent piano sound and other instrument voicing, and to be honest, the proper context for buying this model would be as a home instrument, and not one to take out on gigging, except as a last resort. This is an instrument for learning piano, and learning how to play your favourite pieces, at home. Fifty pounds weight is hefty, but not unmanageable. A lot of engineering has gone into making the instrument above it's initial price range, so compromises had to placed in outer shell materials and construction, but it is more than sturdy enough for home use.

    • @JeremySee
      @JeremySee  3 года назад +1

Yamaha markets this as a PORTABLE Grand. I didn't give it that name. And battery operation and weight is essential for something loudly trumpeted as a PORTABLE Grand. And assigning functions to pedals is something even Yamaha's $199 keyboard can do. It isn't just a "premium" function. If you are not an Arranger player, you are unlikely to understand. And to use a DGX to learn mainly piano is a massive waste of it's ability as an arranger piano. There are cheaper and better pianos from Yamaha if one just want to learn piano playing.

To me it was almost no choice: to buy Yamaha P-125/DGX-660 from the official dealer and have warranty and service, or to buy any other brand without any warranty and service due to no official dealers in my country. So, I bough it as my very first piano, and I'm happy. The only thing it lacks is no app like Smart Pianist to learn built-in songs from a bigger screen than that of piano itself. But yes, I agree on build quality - it could be better for the price it has.

As a pianist for a living, I have to say that I got the dgx660 in 2017, and nothing has broken. The other thing is that the piano is not a keyboard. So that is why you don’t have a battery backup. Realizing this digital pianos are to beefy to do that. If you want to gig with a portable instrument then you go with a keyboard not a digital piano. Keyboards and pianos are 2 different instruments. For the record, I play many grand pianos at work and I come home where the digital is and I have to say the action is just like that on the grand pianos but I would say on the grands at work the grand’s action is lighter actually. Every key action is different but the Yamaha dgx660 feels like a work horse. It is actually a work horse. The action on this piano is that of a digital piano’s action because the dgx660 is a real digital piano. Like I said. If you want battery backup then get a keyboard and keep the digital piano at home. Many digital piano companies say the pianos are portable but they really are not. A digital piano is suppose to bee beefy and rugged because it is not a keyboard. The graded hammer action is so true as well. As far as the music rest breaking I have never had that happen and I have put little clocks on it and other things as well. The only thing that came off of it was the triple pedal unit which on all pianos someday the piano will give out. I ment to say the pedal will give out. The Damper or Sustain will ware over time because,,,,, you are using that pedal all the time. As far as the piano goes, it is truly in perfect condition like the day I got it and I am on that thing daily hours on end every day before and after work and on my time off. As far as the modulation wheel, well, understanding that all digital pianos don’t have the same things. Some of them come with 1 wheel the bend wheel like the dgx660 and others do seem to have 2 like a synth. As far the build quality,,, it is strong and hefty. Their is nothing weak about this guy for sure!!!! Like I stated it is a beast. I still have my piano with me today and use it daily and it is still working like a complete horse!!

I completely agree. You cant ask the question "is the 660 still relevant" and compare it with those cheap "E-series" and Casio Ctx arrangers. This is a digital piano. Compare it to a digital piano like the P45 or the P125 or even a similar priced Casio digital piano like the privia line, and you'll soon descover how amazing and "relevant" this instrument actually still is. And im speaking in 2023 long after the dgx 670 has been launched. So i do agree with one or two points Jeremy has, but all the other issues was because he compared this digital piano's features with those of arrangers.

I have owned a dgx 660 for a few months now, and I believe this is a reasonably accurate description and review of the instrument. Not all of the voices and rhythms are of acceptable quality... They're not nearly as good as those on the newer Yamaha instruments such as the Clavinovas, was cost a huge amount more than the dgx. It certainly okay as a practice piano, and far less expensive than the replacement for the p255.

Another good review Jeremy. Like you, I have always had a preference for the Yamaha sounds, but my portable piano is now the Casio Privia PX-S3000 as it seems a better choice at the price than current Yamaha offerings. I chose it over the 1000 (which would have been financially more competitive) as although the arranger features are clumsy to access my principal use is as a piano , and the price difference being so small I got the extras for fun!

Hey Jeremy ! Good info . I still have my Yamaha dgx230. This is a 76 key tough keyboard. It's like brand new, haven't used it much since I purchased it in 2012. I jumped brand to Roland since my team and I play mostly eastern music. dgx230 has a great sound engine , producing high quality sounds. It's a pity that Yamaha did not incorporate a usb storage or sd card slot. It does have usb connectivity to PC with only 32 MB storage capacity . The variation is 2 with fill in. Korg pa series has 4 variations and those are entry level keyboards . Yamaha dgx is not an entry level keyboard . It's good if the keyboard is heavy , which means that it has good , tough components built in the sound engine and that's what makes it last longer. The dgx 660 has a poorly built exterior and keys probably due to companies using recycled material , I'm guessing, lol. Overall Yamahas have great sounding styles and voices. Thanks for your presentation . I was not aware that the dgx series series was still in production. 👍👍👍

I have same perception with dgx 660, p series is still better piano sound. can anyone confirm this? or im just being subjective?

I still have a DGX-660 for two years now and it still performs really well. It replaced an older DGX-640 which has several malfunctioning keys.
IMO I hope the next model gets a touchscreen at least and proper style variation controls. The single button variation and fill-in is just so bad during performance.
I also hope they improve the key action. My P125 and Kawai ES110 has better key action. It's not bad but it feels 'lighter'.
I agree, they should add more registration memories.
Feature wise I don't even use the sequencer and microphone input but the sound and integrated styles sold it for me.

Hey, Jeremy! I've had this piano for about five years now. We use it at our songwriters night once a month, and once a month we need to move it - it's damn heavy! I like most features about it, and I agree, with your pros and cons. However, the two most challenging issues are 1: weight (really not portable); and 2: lack of battery power. I'll most likely keep this piano for a while longer, but I'm thinking about something a bit more portable and with battery options. Any advice or suggestions?

The one I play now is unsensitive to touch.
I'd like one that have this feature but also rhythms , styles and different voices. But I don't konw if it would be better to buy two different ones, on the one hand a cheap digital piano with counterwheighted keys and on the other a better sensitive keyboard than the basic one I have now. Or as I said before one that have all in one. I can't spent a lot of money I'm a beginer amateur player

I have a DGX 505 and got my first acoustic piano since I was 5 or 6 (I didn't play much), but I have been buying Yamaha keyboards since 1980, as a piano replacement and stoped with the 505. I was considering getting the 660 and I'm glad I saw your review because it covered all the issues the concerned me.
Would you happen to know how much it is to have a new action put into a piano? I love the tone on my piano, but the action doesn't allow me to play pianissimo.
It's a Fisher apartmemt grand (4' 7"). It really needs a new pin block, but I've learned how to keep it pretty much in tune and it sounds a lot better consistently than when my tuner first did it. If I had the whole job done (case, pinblock, restringing, hammers). I could buy a new piano, it still wouldn't have this tone.
My tech doesn't really voice, so I haven't explored that option, just thought you might know.

You're the first reviewer I've seen that was critical of build quality. Sorry you're students had problems. Maybe I just got lucky as I haven't had any trouble. The MSRP is always higher than actual street price. Guitar Center sold these for 799.00 from the start. They periodically drop them to 699.00 which is what I paid.
