  • It’s the cruelest of conditions - and the uncontrollable tics and outbursts all too often mean a life of public ridicule. For many who have Tourette Syndrome, home is one of the few places they can find understanding and sanctuary. But there’s another little-known symptom of this condition that makes even family life hell. Violent mood swings, uncontrollable rages that turn loving homes into battlegrounds. As Alex Cullen reports, these rage attacks often leave parents fearing for their lives, desperate for help.

It get can very bad. Some people's brains are just set to hurt themselves or their families, friends or even strangers. And since they can't control it, the tourettes can be very dangerous. But if they get a surgery they will be perfectly fine, not immediately, but after a while

Eerie when I was 12/13 I had these meltdowns and worse. I don’t have Tourette’s but constantly my mom would throw me in the hospital and claim I had autism - when who knows what the hell happened that caused these. I had severe depression aswell so I was put on multiple anti depressions - which I believe caused the violence. I was 10 times worse than these kids if you can even IMAGINE that, not pretty. I called my mom every name in the book, completely trashed her self esteem for good, would literally grab food out of her and my little sisters hands and say they were too fat, she fell asleep crying every night. Every time I think of those times I start sobbing - just imagining the looks on their faces when I did those things. All because doctors put me on the wrong medications for my age. But the thing is when I’d get mad usually I’d go off then go and slam my door and throw things etc and eventually I’d calm down. But then my mom started this thing where when I’d go off she’d start filming or come into my room and point a camera in my face , instead of calming down I’d do anything to grab the camera , break her phone , hit her anything. Filming a kid makes a situation A MILLION times worse - no one should do it , I have proof hah. Anyways now I speak out , I am a successful teen ; pretty, social , have a job, but do to my past I am 100 times smarter than any teen. Just because my life experiences ; some say I’ve had worse experiences and more life experiences than most 80 year olds. Minus the family etc etc. it sucks and I will never get over my extreme guilt and I can still barely sleep at night as I get flashbacks and HAVE to play Netflix in order to sleep - and I constantly feel pain for the things I did and the looks on their faces and way they cried will always be burned into my brain and I’ll always have regret even if they forgave me for all as it’s been yeaaars and I’m pretty much perfect ( well in emotions aspect noones perfect. ) I hate that part about my past and myself ; it sucks because no matter how many times they say they forgive me, if one were to die tomorrow I’d go off the edge with regret. But the past cannot be undone ; and that’s why I speak out for kids like this now and help them , and I’m looking to maybe become a counselor with my career. Sadly for these kids though it’s a physical thing and cannot be treated or stopped, barely curved. This is what they will always live with and it sucks.

Yeah my daughter has a fairly severe case of Tourette’s but it’s nothing like this. Some of these behaviors don’t seem to fit the criteria of “tics” at all. Tics are fairly quick and involuntary... these are violent mood swings. They definitely appear to have Tourette’s... you can see classic tics, but it seems like other things are going on too. The PANDAS diagnosis mentioned above does fit perfectly and is usually Tourette’s with a lot so psychological and psychiatric symptoms. Your heart just breaks for everyone involved. It’s a hard thing to watch your kiddo go through.

I feel like it’s mainly from anger which again, makes it worse and they can’t control it (I developed tics recently and I have a neurologist appointment soon so I can get a diagnosis but something similar happens to me just like them) Whenever my mom tries to stop me or won’t leave me alone while I tic, I get anxious/frustrated and start yelling at her while hitting myself to avoid hurting her. Personally it makes me uncomfortable when people touch me, talk to me, or won’t leave me to be which causes the tics and violence to get worse

This is sign that he doesn’t trust his parents. We can clearly see they don’t have patience for him. They don’t respect his boundaries (when he says, don’t touch me” they continue to touch him.) The father laughed at one of his tics (I understand sometimes we do things that can be interpreted as funny but it was just cruel of him to laugh the boy instead of trying to show compassion.) they grabbed him by the arm while the poor boy was screaming that he didn’t mean to, and they should know damn well he didn’t mean to. Filming him in a vulnerable moment where he didn’t want to be filmed (in his underwear no less!) these people are petty excuses for parents. It is disgusting.
This is why the kids get violent. They express their feelings and the people who are supposed to guide them and protect them are doing the exact opposite and they are FRUSTRATED. How else would you feel when you have a condition you can’t control and the very people who brought you into this world are the ones who are causing you greater frustration even though they KNOW you can’t control it?

When the school year started I was in class with 9th graders, when everyone was settling down one of my students screamed loudly and I told him to not do it again. He then asked me to come outside because he wanted to speak to me. I observed that his face was scratched and full of scars, and his right ear was seriously damaged. Then he started explaining that he had Tourette's syndrome and he told me he had short episodes where he uncountrolably screamed and hit himself (in the middle of his explanation he had an episode and I jumped because he really took me by surprise), he also showed me his chest, he had a small but deep wound that he had done to himself with his fist. We went back inside to start the class, he was quite participative but his episodes were about every minute or two minutes. He kept scaring his classmates and myself but everyone was understanding of him. Days later his mom came to speak to me about his condition and told me that he had gotten so much worse over the years because he wasnt being treated for his desease. Then she said he smoked weed to calm the pain, I didn't see him again. He became "homeschooled", we sent the exercises and homeworks but they never came back. Then we found out the kid was taken from his parents by social services because they gave him weed. The poor kid couldnt stay two minutes without having an episode. It's one of the saddest and most shocking experience I have ever lived as a Teacher. And its even worse that us teachers are not prepared to work with these Kids.

This is literally the first time I've seen or heard about rage episodes on people with TS. And I'm having a hard time believing that this is just TS. I mean, what do I know. But it's just really hard to believe. And it sucks that they barely explained anything regarding these 2 cases that have it. Also, isn't it supposed to be a Neuorologist who're supposed to explain TS not a Psychiatrist?
I just find it a bit troubling that they didn't explain anything about these 2 cases because it might give a very bad impression to people who're not aware or familiar with Tourettes which already has a bad image on media. People expect everyone with TS to curse or do huge movements.

My boyfriend calls my verbal tics savage mode because I’ll say the most random things in a situation that fit very well and it’s frustrating because when I’m in public people say I’m not a good person and often confront me about my behavior. It sucks really because some people just don’t understand that I can’t control it which makes me feel disappointed in myself because I’ve got Tourette’s which keeps me from leaving the house. Luckily I’ve got my boyfriend who makes the best of it because some of my tics absolutely crack him up which ends up making me laughing with him because of how stupid and weird some of my tic are.

Everyone told me I was just a bad kid luckily I don’t have the verbal Tourette’s but I would get random urges to say grab a hammer and smash a wall. I made the same chirping sound as Cameron did. I did the same blinking thing as Maddie causing massive headaches. I would get such terrible urges that I would break anything and everything in my path and then when my destruction was over I’d cry for hours after realizing what I did. And I remember in elementary school during tests or any kind of quiet time I would make sounds that I could not control no matter what I did. I would scream to such a high pitch at times I once broke a small shot glass. This video made me realize so much I wish I saw this sooner so I could tell my tinier self that I’m not a monster.

My grandson use to be full of rage. He had a uncontrollably temper. he started playing basketball. All that went away. He plays baseball and soccer also. But basketball is where he really excels. he is the smaller guy on the team. But he is a beast at the 3 pointers. This year we have added his own personal coach to help him excel even more.

*After watching one video this disability I'm watching more and more in an attempt to understand it, most videos made me cry because they're kids and they feel bad about the disability. Most wish they didn't have it at all.*

Watch the video about Bianca from Australia. She got DBS surgery and it worked amazingly to nearly diminish her tics completely. Very sad yet amazing story.

I’m wondering if their manic episodes are related to Dissociative Identity Disorder, because the way Cameron describes it sounds similar to how switches happen and how the alter/host relationship works...

It's the exact thought I was thinking. Maybe they could be confused and the kid actually has both tourettes and disociative disorder? It's probably shitty to have both but it's a possibility.

Anna Naw I don’t think it’s limited to just the two because it’s also similar to Intermittent Explosive Disorder. I experience the same thing and I cannot control it or calm down from it until it’s ran it’s corse. There are times where I am angry for hours because I can’t calm down, it’s a sickening feeling. I can get more angry from just hearing myself breathing...but have not control over it.
